GUIDE
DOOMSDAY? REALLY?
As December 21, 2012 approaches, Doomsayers
continue to zero in on that infamous date which
represents the end of the Mesoamerican Long
Count Calendar from the Mayan civilization.
They anticipate that it correlates with the end of
the world. Were the Mayans privy to impending
astronomical disaster predicted over 5,000 years
ago? Will a solar storm wreak havoc on the Earth?
Will a major cosmic event trigger a reversal in the
planet’s magnetic field? Will a black hole materialize
and suck our galaxy into oblivion? Experts say there
is no evidence that the end of this ancient calendar
prophesizes the end of the world, but that doesn’t
stop some people from preparing for the worst. And
this is not something that is new. People have been
predicting the end of the world since the dawn of
time. The how and the when keep changing.
History is full of apocalyptic prophecies that
have passed like any other day. While Christopher
Columbus was right that the Earth is round,
fortunately he was wrong about the end and life
continued beyond 1658. Then you have people
predicting multiple dates for the planet’s demise,
like Harold Camping. His calendar of doom continues to be reset as each of his D-days pass without
incident. First it was sometime in September of
1994, then March 31, 1995, then May 21, 2011. One
would think that with so many failed predictions
about the end of the world, people would stop
pinpointing an exact date.
Remember Y2K? Threats of a worldwide computer
meltdown created a public panic that resulted in a
surge of the purchase of gas-powered generators,
canned food and water. The New Millennium came
with barely a hiccup. Aside from a hype-hangover,
Y2K brought with it a few power outages in a couple
of countries, 150 dysfunctional slot machines at a
race track in Delaware and the reading of January
1, 19,100, on the US Naval Observatory clock. The
collective computerized mind continued to operate
as normal. And our dependency on technology
continues to grow. Can anyone live without a smart
phone these days?

Even the Doomsday Clock continues to be reset.
The symbolic clock face was originally “set” by the
Bulletin of Atomic Scientists in 1947 to represent
the growing threat of global nuclear war. The
clock has clicked closer to and further away from
midnight a number of times over the years. With the
clock yo-yoing back and forth, it’s hard keep track
of the proper time. And in 2007, it started reflecting
climate change and what the Bulletin of the Atomic
Scientists refers to as “new developments in the life
sciences that could inflict irrevocable harm.” Translation for many: Zombie Apocalypse. Are you prepared for that? With our city’s affinity toward the
walking dead, Seattle may be ready for them.

Some people choose to have fun with their prepping.
Run For Your Lives (www.runforyourlives.com) is a zombie-themed mud run. Participants can elect to run the
5K obstacle course as a human while others (maybe
working under the philosophy of “know your enemy”)
participate as zombies trying to take the “humans”
flags. Prepper meetups (www.meetup.com/SeattlePreppers) are also a way that people can exchange
Obviously food, water and first aid kits are a must,
but preppers cover all the bases and are creative
at turning non-doomsday products into essential
survival gear. Jeremiah Sullivan, who developed
the chain mail anti-shark suit, says that his
company, Neptunic Sharksuits (www.neptunic.
com/sharksuits), fields about 20-30 inquiries a
year from people all over the world interested
in buying his suits to prepare for the zombie
apocalypse. They only sell their suits to professional divers currently, but as soon as they meet
their first professional zombie fighter, they’ll have
to add them to their client roster. Regarding his
shark suits, he comments, “In the end, zombie
teeth don’t cause us nearly as much concern as
their breath.”
ideas and keep each other up to date on the latest survival methods.
Shelter
Today’s survivalists are different than their
predecessors. To begin with, many of them
eschew the term “survivalist” altogether,
preferring to call themselves “preppers”.
Instead of living off the grid, they’ve embraced social media and the Internet. There
is a #prepper hashtag as well as message
boards and websites devoted to them. Active
participation and continual preparation is
strongly encouraged. More importantly, they
are investing their time now to prepare for any
coming catastrophes in the following ways.
There are some of us who remember having a fallout
shelter in their backyards fully stocked with giant metal
cans of water, can openers and Vietnam era C-rations.
Nowadays, in keeping with the prepper ethos, these
shelters are a lot more, shall we say, comfortable. If
you don’t have the time or the resources to build your
own, Vivos (www.terravivos.com) has you covered. For
$35,000, members can reserve a space in their 137,000
square foot, nuclear-hardened shelter located in Nebraska. It promises protection against the effects of a
super volcano, a global tsunami, an electromagnetic
pulse, biological warfare, a shift in the earth’s magnetic
polarity and the mysterious phenomenon known as
“Planet X”. The shelter features a fully equipped urgent
care/triage hospital, a mechanical repair shop, hydroponic gardens, and a water purification facility with a
deep water well. And because they are completely
prepared, there is a fully stocked wine cellar and a hair
salon as well. It’s the ultimate gated community.

DEstination CELEBRATIOnS
Cancun, Mexico
Denver, Colorado
Rumor has it on the night of December 21st, some of the hotels in Cancun
near the site of many Mayan Ruins are offering a free night’s stay. Wait, what?
That’s right. After all, if the Mayans are correct, this could very well be the
end. Check out these places to stay for more information: Gran Melia Cancun,
Intercontinental Presidente Cancun Resort, Hyatt Regency Cancun, Villa del
Palmar Cancun and Flamingo Cancun Resort to name a few. Don’t miss out on
the time capsule either. Located amongst the resorts, visitors are encouraged
to add their own letter and photo to be buried for over 50 years.
At Hotel Teatro they are offering a “Live While You’re Alive Package”, availble now through December 21, 2012. For $35,000 you’ll get one night in the
Chancellor’s Suite while being waited upon by a personal butler. Expect to
start the evening off with Dom Perignon and caviar. A six-course meal with
wine will follow but it doesn’t end there. You’ll also receive massages, a private
helicopter ride, and a $25,000 shopping spree to a nearby jewelry store. If you
survive doomsday you’ll be invited back for a complimentary night in 2013.
Out of your price range? Not to worry, throw your own party!
HOLLYWOOD DOOM
Hollywood loves to focus on doomsday scenarios.
Many great films take place in post-apocalyptic
settings. Does it really matter what brought civilization down? What’s important in all of them is
survival. Who would you want on your side to deal
with dystopia when the world as we know it comes
to an end?
Man Against Man
Logan’s Run vs. The Road Warrior vs. The Road
In the decay of the civilized world, whom would you
look to for tips to survive? Surely not Logan 5 who
doesn’t realize there is life outside of the dome. He
is content in his controlled utopia-like environment
until he’s faced with early vaporization at the ripe
old age of 30. Maybe you’d follow the example of
Viggo Mortensen’s “Man” who does what he can to
keep his son and himself alive while maintaining a
little humanity. Our bet is on Mad Mel… er Max. He
may be an embittered nomad, but he’s not afraid
to take on psychotic marauders. The Road Warrior
rules!
Man Against Mutants/Zombies
28 Days Later vs. I Am Legend vs. Zombieland
Whether it is a mutation, contagion or awakening of the dead, man must survive these (usually)
flesh-craving creatures. While often touted one of
the best post-apocalyptic movies of all time, I’m not
sure 28 Days Later’s “hero”, Jim, is the best person
to seek zombie-fighting advice from (I know…they
are not zombies, just rage-infected people). After
all he just awoke from a coma to find the world in
the condition it’s in and then falls back into one
near the end of the movie. However, Legend’s Robert Neville has no qualms capturing a “Darkseeker”
in his search for a cure. Unfortunately, it ultimately
leads to his demise. We’ll get our zombie advice
from Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee. He’d provide
comic relief while taking out a troop of zombies and
then toast the victory with Twinkies. Two thumbs
for Zombieland…that’s right, just thumbs.
Man Against Machine
Blade Runner vs. Terminator 2 vs. The Matrix
When machines get the upper hand, bad things happen. Who is our best hope to take them down? Technically, there is nothing remotely apocalyptic about
Blade Runner, but Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard’s
quest to exterminate replicants is too iconic not
to mention. As is Schwarzenegger’s reprogramed
terminator battling against Skynet’s new prototype
made of a liquid metal to save man’s only hope,
John Connor. (OK, that’s machine against machine.)
However, Neo is hands down “The One” in dealing
with machines. We’ll take the red pill and follow Neo
down The Matrix rabbit hole.
SEASONAL PIES
CHANTERELLE PROSCIUTTO
With just pork, sea salt, and time, La
Quercia makes a spectacular prosciutto
that rivals Italy’s best. We pair it with
fruity, peppery chanterelle mushrooms
from our friends at Foraged & Found
Edibles. The prosciutto and chanterelle
top mozzarella on a garlic and olive oil
sauce. Look for it at the beginning of
November.
PEAR PRIMO
Washington leads the nation when it
comes to growing pears, so it is only
fitting that we feature it on a pizza!
Washington pears join walnuts, Gorgonzola, mushrooms, red onions, mozzarella
and fontina on an olive oil base for this
delicious pie. It is available at the end of
November.
BUTTERNUT SAGE PRIMO
Fall is also squash season, and we
love the richness of roasted butternut
squash. We combine it with chanterelles,
prosciutto, mozzarella and fontina on olive oil and finish it with fried sage. This
delectable pizza joins Pear Primo at the
end of November.
CHICKEN ROSEMARY PRIMO
We crave comfort food during the winter,
and our hearty Chicken Rosemary Primo
fits the bill perfectly. This meat and potatoes pie features marinated chicken,
rosemary roasted potatoes, red onions,
mozzarella, kasseri and red chili pepper
flakes on a base of olive oil. We finish it
with a sprinkling of parsley. It starts at
the end of December.
THROW YOUR OWN PARTY
Sure - you’ve probably thrown a party and been to quite a few, but what if you were
planning your very last? Here’s our Doomsday guide for how to go out with a bang!
1. Make sure you’ve secured a great location, whether it be beachside, the
top of a skyscraper, a cabin in the woods or some other venue like your own
house.
2. Last Supper — Have every guest bring what would be their last supper.
3. Decorate in Mayan fashion and build a blazing fire.
4. Project Apocalyptic films late into night.
5. Encourage costumes, zombies perhaps?
6. Make a playlist. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

GROWING GREENER - UNDER ONE ROOF
We’re proud to announce that our newest location — a brand-new Pagliacci
Pizza opening in Madison Park around the beginning of November — will be
our first LEED- (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified
location, and the first LEED-certified stand-alone pizzeria in Seattle!
So what does this mean? We’ve been working with our design and construction partners to ensure that the Madison location is green from the
ground up — from the wood and other materials used in the framing, to the
countertops and paint on the walls, to the lighting fixtures and plumbing.
So why are we doing this? Our customers and employees know (and, we
like to think, are proud of the fact) that we’re committed to being an environmentally focused business, and our newest location will allow us to put
all these practices into place under one roof.
Shift Leader at Broadway
He’ll make sure to have a Doberman,
one grapefruit, a hunting knife, and a
bottle of whisky.
KAYLA GUZMAN
Associate Manager at Kenmore
Her top survival item? “Twinkies because they
don’t go bad. “ She’s also going to have people to
keep her company and a few weapons.
cleaner — and this meant that we had to take great care to ensure the
soil at the site was clean and wouldn’t present any environmental risks
so we invested quite a bit into site cleanup.
The site also required structural support, as the property consists, in
part, of fill material from an excavation that took place in the early part
of the last century. While you can’t see these features — soil cleanup
and site stabilization for example — they are as important as the highefficiency lighting, responsibly harvested wood, and environmentally
friendly finishes that are incorporated throughout the location.
While we’re excited about everything that makes this newest location
our greenest so far, we’re by no means resting on our laurels. We’re
committed to continually finding ways to make Pagliacci a leader in environmental stewardship and plan to apply the lessons learned at Madison
throughout our operation so that we can continue growing greener!
We’re excited for you to see first-hand what a green pizzeria looks like, and
how it operates. Madison, as we’re calling it, will look and feel familiar in
many ways, but there are several differences that can be seen (and some
that won’t be as obvious but are just as important). These include:
• High efficiency lighting fixtures (we’re exceeding the efficiency requirements of Seattle’s energy code – itself a very stringent requirement – by 30%)
• High efficiency plumbing fixtures (we’re again exceeding requirements
by 30%)
• The majority of wood in the building’s framing will be FSC-certified —
just like our pizza boxes!
• Low- and no-VOC finishes
• A building design that incorporates a tremendous amount of natural
daylight, which will help keep energy costs down while creating a very
warm and bright interior.
The property, which sits at the corner of East Madison Street and Lake
Washington Blvd., was actually home to our very first Commissary several
years ago, so in a way this represents a homecoming for us. However, the
site has a diverse history — it has been home to a gas station and a dry
