A Land Lover’s Garden Club

The ALL Garden Club of
Huntington Harbour will meet on
Wednesday, November 18 at the HHYC
at 9:30 AM. As in the past, we will get
together for coffee and a little socializing
prior to a short business meeting at 10:00.
Following that, we will welcome our guest
speaker, Colleen Bushinsky, the owner of
Posy Pushers, which specializes in floral
design. Colleen’s presentation is entitled
“Container Design for the Holidays”,
and features a variety of attractive and
whimsical designs fashioned with live
plants and flowers. You can bet the
garden club members will have the most
special tables set for the Thanksgiving
and Christmas holidays!
We round out our bimonthly
meetings with a catered lunch and,
often, an opportunity to purchase plants/
flowers for our homes and gardens. As
usual, we extend a warm invitation to
any who would like to join us in these
kinds of activities, or might just like to
visit once to check us out. Linda Axel is
membership chair; she can be reached at

Because of the holidays, we don’t
plan an excursion for December. In
October, our president, Lynn Senske, in
conjunction with the Sea Isle Garden
Club, organized a trip for both groups
to Balboa Island and to a retail shop
there called Olive Oil and Beyond.
Sixteen members of ALL Garden Club
were treated to a presentation by the
owner. We had an opportunity to taste
test and then purchase a delicious and
extraordinary variety of vinegars and olive
oils. Terri Feterik, one of our own, plans
to purchase several gifts for Christmas
there ---a “heads up” for those who think
they may be on her list! Rounding out the
excursion, we dined at Tommy Bahama’s
in Newport. Future excursions include
a train trip to San Juan Capistrano, a
visit to the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical
Gardens in Claremont, and, of course,
our annual visit to Santa Anita for the
horse races.
We welcome all, with or without

Orange Coast Memorial Ambassadors

It was a beautiful day in Huntington
Harbour on October 23rd. The perfect
day for Dr. Keith Wilson, President and
CEO of Talbert Medical Group, to enjoy
the sightseeing cruise that he had successfully bid on at Orange Coast Memorial’s
annual Fall Gala, which benefited their
new Patient Care Pavilion.
The trip was a live auction item
donated by Harbour resident, Dr. Andre
Maginot, aboard his 50 foot boat,
Morning Star. Dr. Maginot skippered
Dr. Wilson and his guests around the
canals and up along the Long Beach
shoreline to the Queen Mary. Dr. Wilson
had surprised his guests, bringing them
by bus to the Harbour without telling
them where they were going.
Delicious finger food, dessert, and
champagne, donated by Posh Productions
Catering, completed this memorable
experience.

The Huntington Harbour Garden
Club started off the 2009-2010 club year
in September with a luncheon at the home
of Barbara Simone. Carol Lung, former
Director of the OC District Garden
Club presented a program on Fall Flower
Arrangements to members. Using fall
colors of yellow, orange and brown she
made various arrangements in all sizes of
containers from miniature tea cup size
daises to large arrangements with birds
of paradise and large ferns. She donated
several of the arrangements along with
their containers to the Club for their
opportunity drawing.
The Garden of the Month Award
for September was given to the garden of
Gayla and Joe Totaro, 16251 Wayfarer
Lane (Humboldt Island). “Roses around
the cottage windows” is the theme for the
garden of this striking one-story corner
home. Prolific white snowflake roses edge
the two sides of the house, punctured with
bright yellow lilies and daises. Wisteria
vines climb around the large white painted
windows, which are edged with columns. A
lush lawn extends all the way on both sides
of the house. It also enhances the parkway,
where one power pole is decorated with a
pyramid of purple geraniums. Several elm
trees add lacy charm to the planted areas.
The November meeting of the
HHGC was held at the home of Lois
Hohly. Co-hostesses were Barbara Devlin
and Leayn Johnson. Members learned
about Fall garden care from our speaker,
Annie Hall-Bosche, a Garden Designer
and the Orange County District President.
Fall is the best time to garden in Southern
California because the soil is still warm
and cooler weather has begun. This is the
ideal time to plan for year-round color.
Annuals, such as pansies, snapdragons and
poppies are great for winter color. Pansies
are long blooming but do not like soil
right next to the crown. Other plants to
consider are bulbs for spring color, winter

vegetables, such as basil, peas and broccoli
and perennials such as salvia, lavender and
coreopsis.
General chores for the garden, besides
planting, include pruning, weed and pest
control and winter prep. Perennials should
be cut back and hydrangeas pruned. Leggy
petunias and impatiens should be pinched
back to encourage a fuller plant. January
and February is the time to prune roses
to discourage mildew from attacking new
growth. Meanwhile deadhead roses and
remove diseased leaves by placing them
directly into a bucket instead of carrying
them across the yard.
Mulch is the best defense against
weeds and also serves as an insulation layer
for plants, conserving water and protecting against the elements. If you have access
to horse manure it is a great deterrent for
raccoons. Organic fertilizer such as Gropower, works best for most plants and is
released slower. Give the last fertilizer in
the fall before plants are dormant. Do not
fertilize during the dormant season. If the
leaves on your plants are yellow and the
veins are green, use Ironite to replenish
iron. Lawns should be aerated and gypsum
used to get rid of salve build-up in the soil.
For snail control you can handpick, trap,
bait or use predatory Decolate snails. Most
baits also help add acid to soil.
Winter time brings rain and wind
so it is best to monitor watering as the
weather changes. Sprinklers should be set
to water less frequently but for longer duration. This is the time to thin trees, stake
young trees, deep water trees and shrubs
in preparation for the Santa Ana winds.
During the winds, water plants lightly and
frequently.
Garden of the month for October was
the home of Christine and Dale Faubert
at 16942 Bolero Lane. This formal garden,
with lawn backed by planter areas, features
several pygmy palms, contrasting with
paired tall king palms. Grasses and low

shrubs are set with low juniper ground
cover. Halloween decorations have been
artfully introduced into the planting area.
The curving lawn is outlined with 25 illuminated solar pumpkin stakes which glow
day and night. A life-size skeleton hangs
between the double trunks of the tall palm
tree. A pirate skeleton is suspended between
two palms. Orange lights infested with
black tarantulas are wound around the
trunks of the palm trees. Bats and a witch
figure float above the courtyard entry. The
Fauberts designed the display themselves
and installed it too for the pleasure of their
children, Alexandra and Michael…and all
the visiting trick or treaters.

Trinidad Ladies Club began
their first meeting in September at
the beautiful home of Carolyn Platt.
Everyone had a great time and is excited
to begin the New Year. The membership
has consistently grown and we are happy
to announce that TLC currently has 45
members. The meeting and luncheon
were a great success, as well discussing
our future plans for this upcoming year.
October’s meeting was held at the
lovely home of Sherrill Lander and was
decorated beautifully for fall. Everyone
enjoyed making delicious panini
sandwiches.
On October 15, at the HB Central
Library, President Sharon Larson
presented a donation of $1500 from the
Trinidad Ladies Club to the Trinidad
Island Homeowners Board of Directors
for the installation of two 36” Eucalyptus
Sideroxlon trees in our Trinidad Park.
We are very grateful for Sharon’s work
and for the funds raised by the Trinidad
Ladies Club in keeping our Trinidad
Park beautiful.
TLC will be meeting in November
at the home of our president, Sharon
Larson. We will be discussing upcoming
events for the holidays and a holiday toy
drive.

Annual Progressive Dinner by Duff y
Saturday August 29th the Anglers
of Huntington Harbour participated in
the groups annual Progressive Dinner
by Duff y. 60 Anglers and guests began
the evening with drinks and appetizers
at the Trinidad Island waterfront home
of Bill and Lorraine McCune and then
boarded 6 Duff y’s and cruised over to
the Humboldt Island waterfront home of
Ed and Millie Dempsey for dinner. This
year’s theme was All American Barbecue
and attendees feasted on award winning
Philthy Phil’s Ribs, Sweet Carolina
Ribs, Santa Maria Oak Roasted Tri Tip
and Southern BBQ Chicken catered by
Smokin Mo’s in downtown Huntington
Beach. The coordinators of this year’s
Progressive Dinner included Linda
Armor, Carol Persons and Kathy Bayless.
Balboa Angling Club Masters Billfish
Tournament
September 11th and 12th the Anglers
of Huntington Harbour participated
in the Balboa Angling Club Master
Angler Billfish Tournament for the 28th
year. This year’s AHH team was aboard
Vern May’s “Reel Tiger” and the master
marlin Anglers included President Kathy
Bayless, Jim Persons, Russ Lepper, Vern
Mays and Vern’s son Rob Mays.
September TGIF and Fall Fling
Friday evening, September 25th,
nearly 50 Anglers of Huntington Harbour
met at the Trinidad Island waterfront
home of Lou and Sue Earlabaugh for
the group’s September TFIG and Fall
Fling. Each of the Anglers brought one
of their favorite appetizers or desserts that
were enjoyed by all as they socialized on
the Earlabaugh’s beautifully remodeled
waterfront patio and entertainment area.
October TGIF and Halloween Party
The evening of October 30th nearly
70 Anglers of Huntington Harbour
and guests gathered at the Humboldt
Island waterfront home of Gary and
Paty Whitener for the group’s October
TGIF and Halloween Party. The
Whitener’s home was cleverly decorated
for Halloween and each of the Anglers
(nearly 30 in costume) brought one
of their appetizer or dessert specialties
to be enjoyed during the party. As a
special treat the attendees were given the
opportunity to tour Gary’s fabulous 95
foot Yachtfisher, the Tigress.

The boat parade is set for December 12
and 13, with an ultra cool theme this year,
“Rockin’ the Night Away.” Thousands of
people will be cheering a flotilla of boats
on docks, decks, balconies, and the little
beaches. We’ll be awarding prizes in many
different categories for decorations!
Our grand marshal, Brian Griley, is
encouraging everyone to enter! His parade
captain, Brian Metherall, will be assisting,
along with night captains, lieutenants, and

The Cruise of Lights is a 45 minute
narrated boat tour where visitors from as
far away as China see thousands of lights
on Harbour homes. Proceeds go to further
the music programs for over 250,000
students in Orange County schools from
kindergarten through 12th grade!
We also have a home decorating
contest and you could win a beautiful
trophy for entering your on or off-water
home! The boat parade and Cruise of
Lights are community traditions. Hats
off to our Cruise chairs Marlene Nielsen
and Sheree Novak with help from Barbra
Snegg, Ellie Matthews, Jenny Huntsinger,
Kim Weddon, Teresa Nichols, and Linda
Jorgenson.
As always, Valerie Ingham keeps our
office (and our sanity) intact. Meanwhile,
all of our amazing volunteers from
Islander, Admiralty, Marina Windjammer,
Trinidad, and Sandpiper will be out en
masse to help make sure both events run as
smoothly as our calm waterways.

What a dynamic group! Our
Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee Juniors are busy doing lots
of activities! They helped at the Design
House, are cleaning up beaches, assisting
in the office with phones for Cruise of
Lights, will be lieutenants, and having lots
of fun in the process!
Look for a wonderful fashion show in
the spring coordinated by the incredible
Lisa Knott. The Juniors are invaluable
to us, and we appreciate everything they
do. Hats off to Debbie Berry...the quintessential mom, for her dedication and
leadership! Go Juniors!
HHPC: Marina Windjammers

We have had a busy fall season
already, along with all the other HHPC
groups. The PSOC Design House, Casa
California, gave us many delightful
volunteer opportunities and was an
absolutely beautiful house to spend a day
in. Marina Windjammers worked twenty
eight docent shifts in addition to eight all
day cashier shifts plus Karen and Joanne
in full sail! Let’s hope all the work done
by everyone in all the Philharmonic
Committees pays off BIG.
Our Youth Programs in the schools
have begun and Harbour View students
have been entertained and educated by
Laura Stone’s Woodwinds group. At
Don Wash auditorium bus loads of sixth
graders were ushered in to hear Ancient
Grooves, a popular program featuring lots
of percussion with historical perspective.
Fifteen year old pianist Austin Chen
amazed us with his performance at our
monthly Marina Windjammers meeting.
At last year’s Fifth Grade concerts in
Segerstrom Hall it was Austin who soloed
in Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with
the Orange County Youth Orchestra.

skills is a favorite activity for Marina
Windjammers.
A special thank you goes to the
family of Fritz Bickel for the donation
of Fritz’s violin. It just might end up in
the Music Mobile. Fritz was well known
in his later years in the Huntington
Harbour Community and Marina
Windjammer was privileged to count him
as a supporting member. While at Purdue
University in the 1930’s Fritz played his
violin and was the lead singer in his band,
the “Society Serenaders”. Ninety seven
years young Fritz will be missed but his
music will go on.
Our “Getting to Know Us” gathering
at Susie Sampson’s house was very successful. Four new members will be added
to our roster of ladies who believe kids
deserve music in their school programs.

HHPC: Islanders

We’re in high gear this holiday
season! Our own Brian Griley is grand
marshal and, along with another Islander
hubby Brian Metherall, will lead the boat
parade! Wives Rocio and Michele are
all excited. Thanks to Islander men and
women who are going to be lieutenants in
this year’s parade!
Islanders are working in the office
answering phones, we’re going to be at the
mall, the HHYC, and everywhere needed
to make sure the upcoming Cruise of
Lights is a big success. Kudos to Islander
president Jenny Huntsinger for making
sure we’re motivated, and happy.
Marlene Nielsen (along with
Trinidadite Sheree Novak) are heading up
the Cruise...AWESOME! Kim Weddon,

September Meeting
On September 17th the Sandpipers
first meeting of the 2009-2010 year was
held at the home of Loretta and Carl
Patterson. The newly installed president,
Melissa Banning conducted the meeting.
Helene Rowlette & Katie Goetzinger
organized the docent volunteer sign-ups
for the House of Design. Cathy Liddle
and Lolly McHardy announced that the
Sandpipers are chairing The Cruise of
Lights on the nights of December 17th
and 20th. Debbie Edwards announced
that the Sandpipers will be participating in
the Mini Boat Parade on November 29th.
Co-chairs for the Philharmonic Juniors,
Nicole Stewart and Karen Tribble are collecting coats, sweaters and jackets for the
local shelters.
October Meeting
On October 15th the Sandpipers met
at the home of Suzanne and Jerry Russell.
Lolly McHardy, Hospitality Chair,
announced that the group would have a
couples meeting at Mario’s Restaurant
on November 19th to prepare for the
Boat Parade and the Cruise of Lights.
Music Education Chair Linda Cassidy has
scheduled the Sandpipers to usher for the
Philharmonic on February 4th, 16th, 19th
and 25th in 2010. Susan Lipman, Grand
Marshal Event chair announced that the
Grand Marshal Celebration will be Denim
and Diamonds, held on February 27, 2010
at the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club.
The Design House
The Sandpipers were docents at
the Philharmonic House of Design in
Shady Canyon on October 28th. The
docents included Sandpiper House of
Design Chairs Helene Rowlette and
Katie Goetzinger, Yvonne Robertson,

HHPC: Admiralty Group

Admiralty members gathered in
October at Elizabeth Henry’s waterfront
home. The décor is unusual and quite
spectacular. Plans were finalized for our
work schedule for the Design House with
transportation provided by Teri Feterik.
President Lisa Mulvania attended the
Design House Gala on October 10th, an
event limited to 150 guests.
Our hostess, Elizabeth Henry,
reported on the “Meet the Musicians”
successful program at Harbour View
School. Eustelle Bosler is working on the
HH Boutique for the HHPC Board to be
held in March 2010. The committee hopes
to have 60 vendors.

Admiralty members have already worked
in the HHPC office. Juniors chairman
Coco Malchow reports that Juniors will be
working the Cruise of Lights this year.
Jean Evans hosted a meeting in
November followed by a delightful catered
party for Admiralty members and spouses.
Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie.
Mim Strickler arranged for a boat ride
for the Admiralty group in the mini boat
parade in November and everyone had a

wonderful time cruising the Harbour and
urging everyone to “ light up the Harbour.”
Mim is hosting a party at her home after
Admiralty work night in December.

FINS party planners, Mary Johnston
and Barbara Simone, decided on a last
hurrah to summer by having a “build
you own taco” party at Mary and Ken
Johnston’s home at the end of August.
Betty McCarthy made the taco filling,
Mary made pork carnets and Mexican
rice and Barbara provided Mexican wedding cakes and lime curds. Guacamole
and chips, refried beans and sweet corn
cakes were on the menu, accompanied, of
course, by fresh made margaritas.

Daytime Gourmet members enjoyed
an October Harvest Luncheon at the
home of Ruby Devin whose co-hostess
was Loretta Maiorana. The mouth-watering menu was chosen from “Bon Appetit.”
Appetizers were warm Brie, with ginger
citrus glaze and grilled pancetta-wrapped
shrimp. A spinach pecan salad followed.
The main entrée was New York strip with
roasted vegetables and grilled smashed
Yukon potatoes. Baked apple, raisin and
brown sugar dumplings climaxed the
outstanding meal. Cooks were Marian
Galanis, Mary Berge, Gloria Beckstrom,
June Ascolesi, Betty McCarthy, Mary
Johnston and Pearl Holmes.
Evening Gourmet went seasonal
too, with an Oktoberfest dinner, hosted
by Pat and Craig Johnson at Rancho del
Rey clubhouse. Gourds in many different
shapes and sizes were used to decorate
the tables and bar. The menu featured
barbecued bratwurst with sauerkraut and
German potatoes. Bavarian plum pie was
the delicious finale with wine, beer and
liqueurs of course.
Huntington Harbour Ski Club

Octoberfest!!!! Our October meeting held at the beautiful waterfront
home of Karyn and Jim Sanderson, was
all about Octoberfest…….with a delicious dinner put on for us by Oscar and
Mary Ann Brinket. Oscar was master of
the bar b que overseeing the bratwurst.
Everything was perfect and topped off
with a delicious apple strudel. President
Gayle Brooks presided over our meeting
where prospective members and guests
were introduced. We discussed the ski
trips for next year. It looks like we will
be able to choose from Telluride, Sun
Valley or Utah. And of course, we will
go to Mammoth a couple of times.
Our November meeting will be held at
Virginia and Frank Buccella’s for Italian
Nite. If you like to ski and party and meet
new friends, then come to a meeting and

The Huntington Harbour Art Association

Pat McKenna and Pam Smart,
chairmen of the Annual Fiber Arts
Show which was held at Mary Lundin’s
lovely waterfront home on November
12, created displays for needlework
artists who entered over 80 pieces which
included quilting, needlework and
crocheting. Three professional judges
selected winners in several categories
and awarded prizes in each division. The
public was invited to view the exhibit and
enjoy the refreshments. There was also a
Boutique where members had cards and
crafts for sale.
The Needles and Friends group
drove to Temecula on October 21 to see
an exhibit, “Textures: Fiber Arts and
Contemporary Art Quilts” displayed in a
gallery setting.
Kathleen Moore, in November,
provided her home for the Annual
Gift Tag workshop where all members
shared materials to crate unusual and
personalized gifts tags for holiday
presents.

Kay Sullivan is arranging an exciting
tour to the Huntington Library and
Gardens in San Marino in January. The
tour will be followed by a luncheon at the
Gazebo.
The Association is also planning
a repeat of the successful jewelry
workshop with Leslie Benjamini who
will demonstrate the technique for
making a multi-strand bracelet. This will
be held in February.
Painting Pals, an informal group
of members who join to paint together
in any medium continues to meet on
Tuesdays at Seagate Yacht Club.

The most exciting news for Sea Isle
Garden Club is the approval on October
19 by Huntington Beach City Council of
the contractor for the Edinger Parkway
landscaping project. At a December
Council meeting, members of Sea Isle
Garden Club will present a check for
$122,000 as the community’s pledge for
completion of the Parkway. There are
so many residents of the Harbour who
have contributed toward that goal and we
thank you all for your support.
Members of Huntington Harbour
Garden Club and ALL Garden Club, who
have also supported our Edinger Project,
joined Sea Isle on our first excursion of the
year to Olive Oil and Beyond, on Balboa
Island in October. The event was planned
by SIGC’s Vice President for Programs,
Donna Davis. We learned so much about
the benefits of olive oil in our diet and the
differences in the many varieties available
to us. We were surprised at the delightful
tastes of oils and vinegars infused with
fruits, herbs, and other flavors. Afterwards
the group enjoyed a fabulous lunch at
Tommy Bahama’s, with our own special
menu items of salads and sandwiches.
In November, SIGC gathered at
Seagate Clubhouse to get an update
from our President Janet Littlejohn on
the Edinger construction time line. Our
Ways and Means VP, Lolly McHardy
discussed plans for our May Luau Party,
set for May 21st. Then it was time for fun:
we learned all about ‘Facinators,’ which
are an English style of hair adornment.
With guidance from Susan La Pittus, we
enthusiastically created some beautiful
facinators of tropical flowers, ribbons, and
sparklies, which will bedazzle all who see
them at the most festive of occasions. The
hospitality committee, Lucille Mascoli,
Carolyn Platt, and Cathy Kelly arranged
for lunch after our hard work.
All our members are looking forward
to our Holiday Party on December 9th,
at the Trinidad home of Carolyn Platt.
We will have an opportunity for giving
a special holiday gift to a family in need,
celebrating our accomplishments for the
year, and share the joy of friendship. Sea
Isle wishes happy holidays to all.

60th anniversary in 2010. We are a nonprofit volunteer organization with 300
members in our local chapter including

Have you ever seen a 4ft. tall martini
glass? Well, 72 Seagate Yacht Club party
goers have! The first thing they saw
upon entering the clubhouse was a 300
pound ice luge sculpture in the shape
of a Martini Glass with the Seagate
Burgee etched in the ice. Everyone
received a commemorative martini glass
with the SGYC logo which they were
promptly instructed to hold underneath
the sculpture. House Chair Rob Allen
popped a shot of vodka in the top of
the ice martini class. It then slid down
the luge and came out all nice and cold
into the martini glass. What fun! We
had cosmopolitans, appletinis, lemon
drops and traditional 50’s gin or vodka
martinis with olives stuffed with lemon,
garlic, onions or sun dried tomatoes. Rob
and Cindy Allen went all out to make
this a special treat for the club…and they
succeeded!
Each member and guest brought
their favorite comfort food or desert for
the members to share. Joanne and Bob
McCormick made name cards for each
dish listing the persons name so anyone
that wanted to have the recipe could

We worked off all those calories
dancing to DJ Tod, who played wonderful 50’s music during dinner and then we
went into full mode with line dancing and
jitterbugging. Many members and guests
came dressed in 50’s blue jeans, leather
jackets, pedal pushers and ponytails. It

Courtway would like to say thank you
to all who attended and hope you had a
“way cool” evening!
An armada of thirteen Duff y electric
boats with their spirited crews navigated
the islands of Huntington Harbour in
search of yachts with unique names in
a quest for prizes and recognition. They
all eventually returned to the island of
“Bonaire” for richly deserved libations,
food and dancing. A total of 103 SGYC
members and guests attended the Duff y
Caribbean cruise this year. The winners
of the cruise contest were, 3rd place,

After a somewhat leisurely summer,
La Traviatans marked the new season with
a membership tea at Alice Zamboni’s
bayfront palazzo. Members were asked
to bring prospective members and five
of the guests signed up to join this fun
group, whose goal is not only to support
OCPAC events, but local performing arts
activities as well.
In August, La Traviatans picnicked
in Central Park, listening to the Golden
West Jazz Orchestra and on the “main

What a wonderful summer we experienced in our Yacht Club this year. There
were the Junior Sailing Classes followed
by our Thursday evening Burger Bashes
that everyone enjoys so much in addition to all the parents and other relatives
watching their kids learning to sail. The
smiles on these faces are a mile wide.
We also had many cruises to Catalina
Island, Dana Point, San Diego and other
ports of call plus summer fun for all.
Summers are always special for a yacht
club and this past one was no exception.
But end of summer didn’t end the
activities! We enjoyed a Commodore’s
Cruise down to Ensenada, threw an out-
standing Luau Party, and had a wonderful
Oktoberfest where some members truly
dressed the part and fun was had by all
with lots of good food and drink.
Our Sunday breakfasts’ continue to
be a big hit with both members and guests
from the Harbour and elsewhere the
first three Sundays of each month. These
wonderfully filling brunches are open to
you and are the best deal for breakfast
in Huntington Beach! Chef Christopher
personally prepares omelets and eggs
to order but there’s more. How about a
waffle station, frittata’s, potatoes, biscuit
and country sausage gravy, juices, coffee,
cereal’s and desserts in addition to his
wonderful omelets.
You really are missing out if you
haven’t taken the time to visit us and
sample these delights. As we like to say,
“It’s all you can eat till it all runs out!
We also held our annual Installation
Dinner at the club and already have our
Flag Officers and Directors continuing to
advance our Yacht Club to be the finest in
our class. What a truly wonderful time it
is to be involved in such an outstanding
growing organization. Why not come and
check us out on a Sunday morning for
Brunch or on a Friday night for one of our
Happy Hours. Meals are prepared by our
chef from scratch each Friday night at very
reasonable prices to members and guests
alike. I just bet you’ll be glad you took the
time to know us!
Regardless, there are so many
worthwhile and fun organizations here in
the Harbour and you’re simply cheating
yourself of lots of fun and worthwhile
involvement by not getting involved with
some of them. Why not decide to do so
right now as you read this excellent publication of Harbour Lights?

October’s meeting was a hit with
Seabelles, constant travelers that they
are, when Rooten’s Travel Center execs.
Kelvin Pastores and Jim Mercer, talked
about how to pack, what to pack and
what to pack it in. More importantly,
they brought us up to date with what
NOT to pack and the latest in security
requirements.
The November program featured
motivational speaker, Bobbie Gee, whose
inspiring words left everyone feeling
great about themselves. As always, Bett
Walton arranged for a delicious luncheon
to follow.
Wanderlust Ski Club

Wanderlust skiers met recently at the
home of Mercedes Risconsin to finalize
details of three trips planned by the Ski
Club in 2010. They will be off to Vail,
Colorado on January 9 under the guidance of trip chairs Caroline Williams
and Brenda Zubieta. In February, Joetta
Wallace will lead a group going to Park
City for a week. That trip, with nearly 40
people signed up, will feature the annual
club race. In March, the group will follow
Dan and Anja Garwick to Mammoth for
a mid-week special with at least 20 skiers
signed up.

Update on Pedestrian Bridge Project
over Outer Bolsa Bay. As you drive by
Warner near PCH you will notice work
being done on the south side of outer
Bolsa Bay. It is the long awaited Pedestrian
Bridge. For years the Trust has been
concerned about the public safety access
issues. Walking out on Warner Ave for
access to the Mesa is extremely dangerous.
The Bridge is scheduled for final installation in December. It will offer “safe”
public access to Bolsa Chica for all.
Thanks to all in the community who
donated to the Bolsa Chica Land Trust
“Walk to the Wildside” Campaign which
resulted in funds being raised to complete the bridge. Public partners include
Wildlife Conservation Board, Department
of Fish, State Lands Commission, County
of Orange and Pacific Life Foundation.

Huntington Harbour Kiwanis Club

The Kiwanis Club of Huntington
Harbour had a most exciting event! We
took 15 homeless children from Harbour
View School on a shopping spree at
Target. They each received $100 worth
of clothes from head to toe! Target generously donated an additional $200 to us,
which was very much appreciated.
It’s hard to believe we have extremely
needy children right in our own backyards. But, we do. We also provided 6
needy families from Harbour View with
complete turkey dinners! Thank you to
everyone who participated.
Next up, we are going to be delivering items on children’s wish lists for the
holidays, as we did last year. If you would
like to help out, or find out more about

and I would love to talk to you. We are
also helping out at Marina High School,
and Huntington Beach High School this
holiday season. It feels good, and we’re
putting some smiles on adorable faces.
We were also thrilled to be able to
provide students at Harbour View with
Halloween costumes. Our member, Pat
Ross, suggested this after seeing children
year after year without costumes. They
were thrilled, and we have decided to
make this a yearly project. Every child
had a costume for the parade at Harbour
View!

VIMS (Volunteers in Multiple Sclerosis)

VIMS is our Huntington Harbour
local group which assists those in our area
with assistance in spreading information
about Multiple Sclerosis and also in fund
raising projects to help those afflicted.
Recent donations have gone toward
scholarships in Bob Webster’s name for
those with M.S. who need financial help
with their education. Also, some of our
funds went toward a weekend retreat for
couples with M.S. in the family.
Other ways our Orange County
M.S. assists any with the disease: loan of
equipment such as wheelchairs, special
beds, etc; books and other papers with
info for help; classes concerning diet and
Medicare help, caring for the Caregiver
and stress management for mind and
body. All these and many other pluses are
free to any of you or friends with M.S.

A fun event now available exclusively
for people with M.S. and their loved ones
is an MS Family Cruise June 25-28,
aboard the Carnival Paradise from Long
Beach to Ensenada. For information

throughout the weekend at sea.
