Rotary Club
Provides
Dictionaries to
Students
Pocahontas Rotary Club proudly
presented dictionaries to third grade
children in Pocahontas County:
Pocahontas Catholic School, Pocahontas
Area Community School District, and
the Laurens-Marathon Community
School District. Dictionaries were
delivered to each student and their
teachers by Rotarians Sabrina Taylor and
Helen Beneke.
Third grade has been designated
because the students are developing
dictionary skills and are beginning
to use other resource materials. In
addition, students in third grade make
the transition from learning to read to
reading to learn. All formal education
from this point through college is
dependent upon the ability of each
child to read and to understand what
he or she reads. The Pocahontas Rotary
Club wants our children to succeed
in education by proving this resource
to them. The students will benefit
from the additional resources in the
dictionary: International Atlas, Periodic
Tables, Sign Language chart, Roman
Numeral Tables, and other information.

Guest speaker Jean Murray of Laurens and Delta Kappa
Gamma members Karen Johnson of Marathon and Kristy
Smith of Humboldt (pictured left to right) shared information
about supplementary food programs for children at the Alpha
Omega Chapter of DKG’s March meeting.
Members learned area schools have high levels of students
eligible for free or reduced lunches. Concerned groups have
stepped forward to organize and facilitate a backpack food
program for weekends, since these students receive breakfast
and lunch at school on weekdays, but have insecure food
resources on weekends. Members of Alpha Omega were given
an opportunity to contribute money to support the programs.

At the Library
with Glenda Mulder
March 23, 2016
Book Club selection for March is
Little Wolves by Thomas Maltman.
I’ve just started reading it and am
curious if I see the same in it that
the “All Iowa Reads” committee did
in 2014. So far it’s pretty dark, but
interesting. Our catalog describes
it this way, “Their family farms
devastated by a Minnesota drought
in 1987, a father searches for answers
after his son commits a heinous
murder, while a pastor's wife returns
to the town for mysterious reasons
of her own.” I guess I shouldn’t have
expected cheerful, right?
I have exciting news again this
week! Circle July 25th on your
calendar, you won’t want to miss this!
Iowa author Heather Gudenkauf,
who has written several New York
Times Best Sellers (Missing Pieces,
Weight of Silence, Little Mercies, One
Breath Away, These Things Hidden)
will be at our Library! We’ve got all
her books, so be sure to read one
before her visit. Once again I’ll say
we will give you more details as it
gets closer.
New novels this week include:
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy
Chevalier, Two if by Sea by Jacqueline
Mitchard, Property of a Noble Woman
by Danielle Steel, Deep Blue by
Randy Wayne White, The Widow
by Fiona Barton, Fool Me Once by
Harlan Coben (Audiobook too!),
No One Knows by J. T. Ellison, The
Our Town Our Paper!
Two-Family House by Lynda Cohen
Loigman, Treachery at Lancaster Gate
by Anne Perry, The Summer Before the
War by Helen Simonson and Secret
Language of Sisters by LuAnn Rice
(Audiobook too!). Just one new DVD,
its Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Road
Chip.
We are gearing up to celebrate
National Library Week April 1016 in a big way in Pocahontas
County Libraries thanks to a grant
from the Pocahontas County
Foundation. Author Linda McCann
will visit each of our 9 libraries and
present a program. Tuesday’s &
Wednesday’s programs will be the
Civilian Conservation Corps in
Iowa, Thursday’s programs will be
Prohibition in Iowa. Look for our
posters and bookmarks!
Maker Monday
What a fun mix of ages we had
at our first Maker Monday at
the Laurens Public Library! Each
participant made Book Page Easter
Eggs to take home and decorate for
Spring. We are on the lookout for
our next project. If you have an idea,
please contact the Library!

The Secret Garden
Blooms in April
ISU Theatre’s spring
musical, The Secret
Garden, blooms in
April, beginning on
April 8 at 7:30 p.m.
in Fisher Theater.
There will be
additional performances at 7:30 p.m.
on April 9, 15, and 16 and matinee
performances at 2 p.m. on April 10
and 17.
According to Director Brad
Dell, “The Secret Garden is a story
of transformation. When Mary
first encounters the garden, she
describes it as grey, dead and ‘the
most forgotten place I have ever
seen.’ But she is taught the idea of
wick - that deep down below the
surface even the deadest looking
thing can be filled with life. ‘When
a thing is wick, it has a life about it.
Maybe not a life like you and me.
But somewhere there's a secret streak
of green inside it.’”
In the beginning, loss seems
to have nearly broken the human
characters. The Secret Garden proves
its capacity to reveal life, beautiful
and powerful, buried beneath a dead
exterior. We discover that not only
does the garden have the power to
transform itself, but also to revive
people.
Just like that secret garden,
seemingly lonely, dead, and
forgotten, this musical reminds us
that even in our darkest hours we are
all “wick,” proving the resiliency of
Biggest Little Paper In Town!
the human spirit.
Gorgeous songs like “Lily’s Eyes”,
“A Bit of Earth”, and “Come to My
Garden” musically transport us
and bring to life the haunting,
magical world of The Secret
Garden. This beautiful and
universal story will entertain,
uplift, and inspire the entire
family. It is a musical that will
appeal to all ages.
Admission is $24 for adults
and seniors and $16 for students.
Tickets can be purchased at the
Iowa State Center Ticket Office, all
Ticketmaster locations, or by calling

Yard and Garden:
Caring for
Grapevines
Standing in front of a mass of
tangled grapevines and wondering
what to do can be a scary
experience for the novice or even
the more experienced gardener.
When should I prune
grapevines? The most desirable
time to prune grapevines is late
winter or early spring. In Iowa,
pruning can begin in late February
and should be completed by early
April. Grapevines pruned at this
time of year may “bleed” heavily.
However, the loss of sap does not
harm the vines.
What is the proper way to
prune grapevines? Grapevines
produce fruit clusters on the
previous season’s growth. Before
pruning, a grapevine may have
200 to 300 buds capable of
producing fruit. If the vine is
not pruned, the number of
grape clusters would be excessive
and the grapevine would be
unable to ripen the large crop
or produce adequate vegetative
growth. The purpose of pruning
is to obtain maximum yields of
high quality grapes and to allow

adequate vegetative growth for the
following season.
Grapevines are trained to
a specific system to facilitate
cultivation, harvesting and pest
control. The most common
training system used by home
gardeners is the four-cane Kniffin
system. In a four-cane Kniffin
system, the canes of the grapevine
grow on two wires, one located
three feet above the ground and
the second six feet high.
If utilizing the four-cane Kniffin
system, select four canes on
the upper wire, two going in
each direction. Also, select four
canes on the lower wire. To aid
identification, some gardeners tie
brightly colored ribbons or strips
of cloth on those canes they wish
to retain. All remaining one-yearold canes should be completely
removed.
Going back to the upper wire,
select two of the remaining four
canes, one going in each direction.
Prune these canes back to one
or two buds. These short one or
two bud canes are referred to as
renewal spurs. The renewal spurs
provide the shoots or canes that
will produce next year’s crop.
Prune the remaining two canes on
the upper wire back to eight to 13
buds. The number of buds left on
the fruiting canes is determined
by plant vigor. If the grapevine is
vigorous, leave 13 buds per cane.
Leave only eight buds per cane if
the grapevine possesses poor vigor.
Prune the four canes on the
lower wire the same as those on
the upper wire. When pruning is
complete, no more than 60 buds
should remain on the grapevine.
When counting the number of
buds on the grapevine, include
both the buds on the fruiting
canes and those on the renewal
spurs.
The six-cane Kniffin system
is another training system
occasionally used by home
gardeners. In the six-cane Kniffin
system, the canes of the grapevine
are grown on three wires. The
wires are positioned two, four and
six feet above the ground. After
pruning, a grapevine trained to a
six-cane Kniffin system consists
of six fruiting canes and six one
or two bud renewal spurs. As
with other training systems, the
maximum number of retained
buds is 60.
Tools required to prune
grapevines include a hand shears,
lopping shears and saw.
