The death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and Racing Car driver Peter ‘Perfect’ Brock happened while they were both doing the job they loved so much and seemingly were unstoppable at. As their lives were so quickly taken away, so the country went into a period of mourning, celebrating their lives and recalling with fondness that which made each of them so special. The death of Irwin in particular was likened in the media to Australia’s equivalent of the death of Princess Diana. Whilst that comparison is something you can make your own mind up about, there is no doubt that it has awakened a realisation in the community about the ‘need to remember’. We were drawn to our TV screens to watch special after special on their lives. We were drawn to the radio where people recalled stories of meeting both men. Thousands of flowers were placed outside Irwin’s zoo and along Mt Panorama in honour of Brock. It may seem insignificant but I believe this may prove to have been a major breakthrough for the community, not just in how we grieved, but the realisation that we needed a focal point to remember. We have had many high profile funerals in our local communities that have drawn the attention of many; examples appear in this edition of Involve, but the death of these two celebrities seems to be on a new level. They impacted on most of the country in such a positive manner, so we felt a collective need to mourn. But rather than be sombre and reflect tearfully we did it by rejoicing in their achievements, with the exception of course of Germaine Greer. Anthony Perl The achievements of these two high profile personalities will remain etched in Australian history. Their deeds are recorded for all to appreciate. While these two outstanding Australians were significant to us all, equally the life of every family member or friend we lose is important to us. Equally they deserve a memorial and a focal point to remember them for generations to come. Time will tell, but as more people research their family tree and attempt to find without success the memorials of generations past, the importance of establishing a memorial is becoming increasingly significant. Combined with these tragic deaths the community is coming to terms with the fact that a life lost can be celebrated and must be remembered – something we are all entitled to – whether we are a celebrity or not! A note from the CEO InvoCare Limited recently released its half year results to the end of June 2006. The results were well received and again reflect on the high level of service being offered by our staff across the country. Importantly this is also reflected through the survey of our client families who continue to rank InvoCare service levels highly. In turn this appreciation assists in the continued high recommendation and community awareness of each of the Company’s brands. The strong results enable the Company to continue to invest in its businesses both in terms of the physical locations themselves and the people, which allows us to continue to set the standard for service in the industry. In this edition of Involve there are several articles highlighting some of the investment undertaken by the Company in recent months, including the opening of new locations and investing in the facilities available at existing sites. InvoCare announced on August 18 the proposed acquisition of the Singapore Casket Company. Established in 1920, the company has a 10% market share. I have a close association with the company having formerly held the position of Chairman, when the company was owned by SCI. The purchase represents an ideal opportunity for InvoCare to expand its operations outside Australia. In future editions of Involve we will have an opportunity to showcase their involvement in the Singapore community. In July the Company announced the acquisition of Drysdale Funerals on the Sunshine Coast, allowing us to service one of Australia’s fastest growing community’s. 2) Overriding all the investment is the commitment by staff to not just their job and providing a service, but also their efforts in local community in which they operate. It is their support which continues to enable us to thrive. The InvoCare Limited Board Richard Davis continues to take a very active approach to understanding the ongoing factors affecting the company. To this end they have spent time visiting operations in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth this year. These visits also allow the Board to interact with the staff around the country and discuss with them various initiatives being pursued. Our staff continue to take an active role in the Australian Funeral Directors Association with representation on committees and in official positions. Through these representatives the industry is working with the various governments agencies in each state to improve regulations governing the industry. Staff movements at InvoCare are relatively low as highlighted by the fact that 160 members of staff have been with us for more than 10 years. Congratulations and thanks on behalf of present and past staff and client families. Let me also take this opportunity to welcome all the new staff members. Drysdale Funerals has built a reputation for having quality facilities and being very well respected in the area.
