OJOA Judging School
The OJOA Judging School was held on Saturday June 2nd, two weeks before the Concours. The school was well
received with both veteran and novice judges in attendance.
The Judging school has been an annual event form many years, it has now become a mandatory requirement from
JCNA in order to hold a sanctioned Concours d'Elégance.
The school consists of a classroom session in which the rule changes which where approved at this year’s AGM are
reviewed. This year, the return of the Club Class was discussed at length as it is an opportunity to get more of our
club member involved in the Concours.
The classroom session is followed by a judging session of a couple of jaguars with generous help provided to
the novice judges followed by lunch.

Rendezvous With An Astronaut
By Allan Lingelbach
I`m at the wheel of our new toy heading east in the middle lane on the 401, doing little more than the speed
limit. Carol and I realized that we had left way too early for the start of the OJOA Spring Tour, so now we're
dogging it. My thoughts must have been elsewhere, because THEN IT HAPPENED. We got passed by a
Mercedes Smart Car --- on the right side, no less. The prior owner of our wheels, Captain Eugene Cernan,
would have been disgusted. (I`m not sure, but there may be a clause in the OJOA constitution which states
that upon the occurrence of the above event, the club may revoke a member's membership.)
What were the circumstances that led us to be the owners of this particular embarrassed cat? I could claim
that it had its genesis with my cousin's monstrous Mark X. That experience fostered our (my brother and I)
purchase of a `62 E Type in 1977. Once my half ownership was sold to my brother, (who still has the car) I
acquired a `72 Series III E Type in 1980. 30 plus years later, I still hold the title to that Jag. However, we
wanted something newer, and dare I say, more reliable.
We started our search over a year ago and our wish list was simple: 2010 or 2011 XKR roadster, 20" wheels,
red …. oh yeah …. and very low mileage at a reasonable price. Even with the assistance of an exotic import
dealer that I know, 10 months of searching all North America could not find us a match for our strict criteria.
The "reasonable price" issue pretty much eliminated a Canadian purchase, and, surprisingly to me, "red" was
almost impossible anywhere.
In April of this year, Carol "rediscovered" an ad that I had earlier dismissed …. XKR roadster, 20" wheels, red,
low mileage, reasonable price, BUT 2009. Why lose control and hurt yourself with a 420hp 2009 XKR when
that could be accomplished more dramatically with a 510hp 2010 XKR! Carol's ability to think rationally, in
addition to a unique history on this car, overwhelmed my testosterone.
This Jaguar that we set our sights on was being sold under consignment through a Houston, Texas Chev
dealership. The owner of the car was the aforementioned Capt. Cernan. For a space junkie like me from my
era (in other words --- old) his name was instantly recognizable. I was a bit young for the Mercury flights but
became very fascinated by the Gemini and Apollo missions. Astronaut Cernan took part in three missions --Gemini 9, Apollo 10, and Apollo 17. While he established many "firsts" in space for the Americans, his main
recognition now is for being the last man to walk on the moon. 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of that
December 1972 achievement, which ironically, matches the anniversary of my 1972 E Type.

Rendezvous With An Astronaut
By Allan Lingelbach
Three days after we saw the XKR for-sale notice, our flight from Toronto landed in Houston. The dealer was
holding the car on a verbal commitment, with the final sale subject to inspection. We were either going to fly
back disappointed or drive back euphoric. The salesman picked us up at the airport, ferried us the 60 miles to
our destination, and dropped us off right in front of "our" car. Showroom condition was promised in the ad, and
so it was. Even my borrowed paint meter couldn't find a hidden flaw. Let's buy this thing and get outta here
before someone on the selling side realizes that Canadians usually pay more for this kinda stuff.
On day two in Houston, "Gene" Cernan promised to take us
out for lunch. Of course, as a former captain in the US
naval air force, he flies his own plane. He was running late
on his flight from wherever, so he arranged for us to have
a tour of the Houston NASA space center. We quickly
realized that any "friend" of Gene's is someone to pay
attention to. We were whisked through a security access
while tourists were lined up at the main entrance. The
head of the NASA museum introduced himself and others,
each of whom were obviously instructed to show us a VIP
good time. There was no admission fee and they already
knew our names. Part of our tour even included the
building where America's next spaceships are currently
being constructed. Three hours weren't nearly long
enough, but by now, a true VIP was waiting for us back at
the dealership.
The restaurant that Gene drove us to was one frequented by Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and others
during the filming of Apollo 13. Their autographs and movie still pictures were displayed in the establishment. To
absorb that and then sit as a guest of someone with a celebrity status such as this moon walker, is a world apart
from our simple life. His meal was interrupted with an impromptu autograph session with both patrons and staff.
Carol and I could say "boy I`m glad that's not me", but I think that there's a word in the English language called
"envy" that might be more accurate.
In the time that Gene could spare, he talked about the Jag --- why he bought it, why he's selling it, why I wouldn't
have wanted a 2010 XKR anyway, some quirky things to be aware of, etc. We talked politics --- very anti Obama.
We talked about Canada --- surprisingly knowledgeable about us. He has been on many hunting trips here, along
with visits during his moon mission training. We talked about our home lives, but that was quite one-sided: His
400 acre ranch --- our 8 acre postage stamp. His ponds --- our pond. His horses --- our horse. His 3 dogs --our 2 dogs. His fleet of vehicles --- our …. well I give up. In fact, as I write this, his wife is selling her 2010 XFR.
The dealer emailed me and thought that it would be nice for us to have the Cernan Jag pair.
As our visit to fantasy land concluded, he gave us a copy of his book and a large mounted print of him on the
moon. We had bought a couple of books at NASA pertaining to him. He then personalized and autographed all of
the above. He mentioned that something had fallen out of his pockets while driving the Jag but was irretrievable
unless one removed the seat. Once we got home, I retrieved the usual coins plus two 2005 Reno poker tokens
dedicated to Apollo 17 and Capt. Cernan --- all while leaving the seats intact. We also discovered 6 CDs still in the
Jag player, so we now know that he enjoys country music. We were also able to keep his original signed State of
Texas XKR ownership registration. It`s a bit of a story, but I was able to transfer ownership in Ontario and not
relinquish his registration. What did we give him in return? Obviously he expected a cheque, which he pocketed,
but he really got a kick out of two bottles of Canadian maple syrup.
I could go on and on about this once in a lifetime event, but obviously that's not possible. However, I must
include that this American icon is an amazing person. He is very approachable by us commoners and yet has
entertained and been entertained by the whose who in politics, royalty, and film. Johnson, Nixon, Bush, Thatcher,

Rendezvous With An Astronaut
By Allan Lingelbach
John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and on, are all listed in his book as former dinner dates. 78 years of
living and he is still very active touring the country participating in different events. Recently he has made his
case in the Senate and Congress for an expanded space program. This November, Cernan and many other
astronauts will be in Washington for a public autograph signing session. The admission for one week of seminars,
entertainment, and a meet and greet, will be $600 a head (accommodations and food not included). The
American astronauts still have star power.
Nobody is perfect though, and after reading his autobiography I'm even more shocked at the pristine condition
of his former Jaguar. He has survived two helicopter crashes, a jet fighter incident, and many speeding violations
with the free Corvettes that the astronauts were given in the 60s and 70s. When he was on the moon, he even
knocked off the fender on his moon buggy. In fact, the closest Carol and I have ever come to being in a car
accident was on our way to the restaurant with Gene at the wheel of his Tahoe. He just pulled in front of
somebody else who had the right-of-way. He then wandered over the center line a couple of times. With this
poor track record, it's a good thing that there was no other traffic on the moon when he parked the lunar lander!
Our next goal was to make the trip home as uneventful as possible. The Midwest was being tortured by hail and
tornadoes, so we took the long way home. Very long way --- Houston to New Orleans to Detroit. The XKR is an
exceptional touring auto which can provide explosive power on demand. In two and a half days of daylight
driving only, we were home. The Canadian daylight headlight requirement was the only conversion required and,
after all of the taxes were extorted, our baby became legal up here.
At the June OJOA concours, Gus Sandusky (the engine judge) called me aside while my car was being judged.
In his own words, he said that he regretted to inform me that he had to deduct points for moon dust that he
found at the bottom of the engine compartment. That damn moon dust may have cost me championship points
at our concours, but I think I'll scoop out an ounce of that stuff and go back to Houston. One ounce should be
enough to buy Jan Cernan`s Jag.

Concours d'Elégance
The annual OJOA Concours d'Elégance was held this year on Sunday June 17 at the Ontario
Science Center. It was well attended with a turnout of 31 cars including Display Cars.
This year saw the return of Club Class, which has
been absent for about a decade. The Championship
and Driven classes were well represented as new and
old club members try their hand at the elusive challenges of the perfect Jaguar.
Jaguar Canada's support for the club continued with
their donation of the 30 by 30 foot judging tent.
Thank you again to this year's Concours Chair, John
Ogden, under whose guidance this year's event went
off smoothly without a hitch, not an easy task.
The award's dinner was again held at the Bistro with the Caters out did themselves again this
year as it was an excellent dinner with a good selection of fair and large quantities.
We would like to thank John Ogden , the Judges ,all the volunteers ,Jaguar Canada, and the
Ontario Science Center for their time and help in making the Concours a success .
In addition to the JCNA and Club Class trophies, the following trophies were awarded:
- The OJOA "Best Car in Show" Trophy in Championship Class to Gil Melo
- The Budds Trophy for highest score in Driven Class to George Cox
- The Jaguar Canada Trophy for Judges Choice in Championship Class to
Gil Melo's Series 1 E-type.
- The Mackie Trophy for Judges Choice in Driven Class to Russ Bullock's XKR.

COUNTRY RUN to NIAGARA on the LAKE
August 18, 2012
By John Tysall
Our group of 5 Jaguars gathered at the Mud street Tim Hortons on a beautiful Saturday morning in August.
The first section of the route took us through a narrow winding section through the Devils Bowl conservation
area and then along the edge of the escarpment on Ridge road with spectacular views over Stoney Creek and
Lake Ontario. The route sheet contained a warning for vertigo inclined drivers to look straight ahead in this
section! Further on, the views were of housing developments constructed on the raised beach of the ancient
shoreline of the old Lake Iroquois, locally called the Tablelands.
Next, we turned north, traversed around a true hairpin bend, began the steep descent down the escarpment,
along a quiet road around the Winona conservation area and ascended back up to rejoin the top of the
escarpment. We then had to cross the escarpment again with more twisty and interesting bits as a section of
Ridge road was closed for reconstruction taking us into and out of Grimsby. Unlike a previous run, our novice
convoy leader did manage to make the turn noted as being "very easy to miss in big black letters" in the route
guide. We then passed the rumoured house of Elton John, and a clutch of exotic cars in a driveway including
an E type.
Uneventful till now, the drive became a bit more interesting at this point as the lead navigator discovered a
spider in the hat she was wearing at the time. This created some animated discussion in the lead car which
resulted in the convoy missing a critical left turn. Stopping the group, denying cries of "are we lost" from some
anguished members, our leader conversed with Fred Hill in the last car. Fred calmly provided directions, likely
averted a serious marital discord in the lead car and got us pointed the right way. The member with the GPS
system who was rumoured to have punched in "civilization" as his point of interest at this time will remain
nameless.
From then on, our route took us along King street through Beamsville, Jordan and St. Davids and into Hugh
and Joanne Dow's house near the lake in Niagara on the Lake. The Dows graciously provided us with coffee
and bagels as we looked around the two houses on their interesting property. Originally part of a large estate
built in the late 1800s with a servant's house and a barn, the barn was later converted into a guest cottage
and the house thoroughly updated with a screened in dining porch and other features.
Looking exactly like a neighbouring house is the brand new 6 car garage that Hugh has added. For Jaguar
aficionados, this was like a trip to heaven!
First a replica 1956 Le Mans D type, a resplendent XK150S Roadster, an early Flat Floor 1961 E type coupe on
a hoist, a 1963 Mark 2, a 1976 XJ6 Cabriolet and a 1986 Series 3 XJ6, all neatly arranged in a spotless setting.
Upstairs included many model cars, some interesting paintings, exercise equipment and a large TV. Frankly,
the most civilized form of man cave that one could imagine!

COUNTRY RUN to NIAGARA on the LAKE
August 18, 2012
By John Tysall
Reluctantly tearing ourselves away from the garage, we lined up behind Hugh in the D type to get our pictures taken
and to convoy to the Vintage British car show at the Festival theatre just a few minutes away on Queen street. I was
fortunate enough to be right behind Hugh both to hear the D type and to watch the reactions on the sidewalk as we
went along this pedestrian busy main street. We pulled into the grassy car show area attached to the theatre
terrace, parked our five cars and registered.
Vintage was a bit of a misnomer for most of the assembled cars but probably not for some of our drivers! This was
a small show this year, about 18 cars in total including a TR3, a Morgan, a TVR, a Lotus 7 clone, two TC MGs, two
MGAs, another MG, two Austin Healeys, a 1962 E type coupe, our 62 E type roadster, our 3 XJSs and our modern
XK roadster and, of course, the D type lined up in a prominent position. The setting was quite pastoral and
interesting as theatre patrons coming out to the terrace for lunch or drinks would be confronted by the cars.
Much discussion with other car owners and spectators ensued including in my case, an examination of the
differences between a June and a December 1962 E type engine.
Eventually, some members went for lunch, some went to the main street shops which are right nearby and a few
attended the matinee performance at the theatre. Ultimately, a very pleasant day blessed with good weather, a
very hospitable visit with the Dows and the sight and sound of a D type to round it all off.
