Golden Gate Relay
MAY 3rd 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM MAY 4th
There are 125,000 Americans waiting organs. Twenty people die each day
before a donor is found. Paul Czopek, Zone 7 Rep. has request clubs in the Bay
Area volunteer to assist with this life saving charity event raising awareness
and funds for organ transplants. Relay teams are comprised of 12 members
who either run or walk 191 miles through 36 checkpoints.
Your help is needed to assist Course Directors at check points by handing out
water bottles to runners, assist with incoming traffic in staging area, direct
outgoing runners to start locations.
This event starts at the Calistoga Mineral Water Company and ends with a party
at the Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz. All volunteers are invited to
the party at Santa Cruz Beach so grab a family member or friend to work with
you, helping a great cause and join in the fun at the end of the Relay.
If you are able to donate your time to help with a check point in your area
please contact the event liaison for the check point list and time schedule. Your
help to save lives is greatly appreciated and we hope you have fun participating
with this event.

S
o what was it, Soup Night
or Sock Hop? Loma Prieta
Region’s annual Soup Night
was held this year at Diana and
Hal Hallock’s lovely home, and
in addition to the usual soup
contest everyone was also asked
to wear their wildest socks for
a socks contest. Seven different
tasting soups, thirty wild people,
and sixty not-necessarily-matching wild socks showed up for this strange event.
Strange indeed, for just this once it garnered even more interest in the ladies’ legs
than normal for this region. Conversely, the ladies showed unusual interest in
the legs of the gentlemen. The unusual names of all the soups and the winners
who concocted them are too numerous to mention here, but the sock winners
were equally divided among four men and four women, with the prizes an
innovative means of winning raffle tickets. Never let it be said that this region is
unimaginative and not fair minded, for equal opportunity abounds.
Diana judged the women, and Hal judged the men. Diana’s winners included
Joanna Antonowicz, Emilie Highley, Debbie Bennett, and Christina Vincent.
Hal’s winner choices included Kevin Bennett, Bill Highley, Rudi Herz, and Steve
Mitchell.
It is worthy of note that Steve Mitchell, the “Prieta Post” Editor, was made
especially welcome with hoots and cheers as this was his first return to an official
Porsche Club event since he had recently undergone some absolutely horrifying 15
hour surgery. Despite all challenges he faced he has still managed to continuously
produce the club’s newsletter on his laptop without any break, often from his
bedside. His bravery and positive attitude along with the courageous nursing help
from his wife Jackie, has helped him through this difficult time. Extensive re-hab
therapy and continued support from club friends will no doubt speed the process.

TECH TALK
Welcome to Tech Session season. Or everything you didn’t know you really
wanted to know.
OK Ya’ll here’s the deal on this years tech sessions.(BTW, it’s acceptable for me
to use ya’ll because 3 months in the swamp have turned me into a Salt Water
Redneck).
We’re starting out in our typical manner: changing things.
On April 26th, the Tech Session will be at Bascom Trim and Upholstery instead
of Don’s Autowerks. This happened after the mid month reminders so blame me
not Dave.
I think you’ll find it’s for the best. We usually go to Bascom in late Feb. or early
March. John Wardell thought it would be really good to have a tech session when
Bascom could actually open their doors to sunshine and warmth. I agreed. This
will give us a better view and a more pleasant experience. John promised door
prizes, coffee and donuts and maybe a few surprises.
On May 10th, we’ll be having the Tech Session at Don’s Autowerk’s. The date
was changed to avoid conflict with the pre-Parade Concours School. Now Les
Schreiber can bring the pre-Parade Concours school to the South Bay on the
10th...fair warning; Les has a slide show!
We should benefit as well from what Les learns from the Concours judges in
Livermore. In addition to the cleaning and detailing, Don and his fine crew will
be coaching us on the mechanical preparation needed for Parade.
While not an official Tech Session, we’re all invited to Fremont Porsche’s
open house on Thursday May 15th from 6AM til 9PM. They’ll have their new
showrooms and garage area open as well as doing a big intro for the new Macan.
Gunter sounded pretty excited about the changes so it should be fun.
For the rest of the year, I’ll be talking with all our POST advertisers to line up
other tech sessions.
Dings and Dents will probably be doing another session and I’ve already got a
volunteer Porsche in need of a little TLC. I wanted to give YA’LL the opportunity
to let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see or hear about. Or if there are
any other technical issues you’d like to include; i.e. what’s broken on your Porsche
that needs to be fi xed?
Please email or call with ideas. If I like them, I might even try to make them
happen!
Happy Trails,
Peter

John Wardell and company will once again be
offering LPR attendees an informative session on
maintenance and repairs to facilitate keeping our
beauties in pristine condition. John will be happy to
answer your questions as well as offer his insights
into modification and replacements.
Additionally, John has promised some door prizes
and maybe a surprise or two.
There is an LPR Tech Session fee of $2.00.

aturday Mar. 15 was a lovely day.
As the Morgans opened their
Irish clad home to LPR, we all
fi led in and began sampling appetizers,
drinking wine, beer, and of course
Bob’s famous Irish eggnog.
It was nice and warm; so Nancy and
Paul, Jim Davis, Kevin and others
were outside enjoying tables in the
late afternoon sun. Jennifer and Jim
had spent the day enjoying Santa
Cruz. Joanne and Tony arrived with a
wonderful appetizer. It was a warmed
brie topped with a “frosting” of brandy,
macadamia nuts, and other goodies.
Yumm! It was on the counter
replacing the Musser’s wonderful
salmon that was almost gone.
Joanna and Rudy had huge green felt
hats. Les had a green hat with green
hair attached as well as green dye in
his beard. Christina Vincent had
darling green ribboned high heels that
I couldn’t even stand in, let alone walk.
Karen came
up with a St.
Paddy bingo
game for the
revelers.
18
April 2014
Ken and June were appropriately green.
As usual Karen and Bob had decorated
everything from the front door to
the back yard with shamrocks, Irish
themed table cloths, etc. They had
recently redone the kitchen and moved
the garbage can. It confused some of
us who looked in the old place. Bob
stood in the corner slicing the corned
beef.
Soon it was time to eat. There were
all kinds of potatoes, Karen’s famous
corned beef and soda bread. Some
ate outside - others inside. We ate
inside with Bigg John, Vincents, Rudi,
Bennetts, and others. Lots of us had
seconds on the corned beef. Kathy
Musser was substituting for Jackie
Mitchell and collected our monies and
presented Bob and Karen with their
gift. Kathy was also pushing a May
3rd. tour which I think had a waiting
list by the end of the evening. In the
“meeting” part of the evening Vince
told us about parade registration and
upcoming events.
The dessert table was our next event.
We had carrot cake, cookies, and other
sweets.
After dinner Karen surprised us by
announcing Irish bingo instead of the
usual quiz. We bingoers had our cards
on the table outside and used marbles
to cover squares as Karen called out the
pictures such as “yellow beer on green”,
“shamrock”, or “pot of gold”. Kevin
and Debbie’s grandson Alex won the
first prize, but we kept playing. Many
received gifts. I even got a green smiley
faced spatula.
It was time to thank our hosts,
pack up our plates, and head home.
Thanks again Bob and Karen.
Lisa LaForge poses with an over-sized leprechaun... looks kind of like Les
Schreiber.

Joanna Herz looks like she’s anxious to get the lids off so she can dive in!
Joanne Antonowicz must surely love her carrots; she’s never looked happier!

...Fred Schatz and Kevin Bennett show what happens when your the last ones in
an LPR serving line.
Karen looks like she’s just received a St. Paddy’s goose!... and is that a baby
bottle Bob is using for his Guinness? “I’ve heard of nursing a drink, but that’s
ridiculous!”
