About Bloomsburg 1
Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year
coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal
school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence,
ranging from its 14 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic
programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where
friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place – with more than 160 student organizations and
activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree
credit courses, noncredit mini-courses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning
courses on public television.
The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000
people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80
retail stores, restaurants and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can
be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazletown, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre
and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; three hours from New York City
and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.

4 Head Coach John Stutzman
John Stutzman begins his third season as head coach of Bloomsburg University. In his first two years as head coach Stutzman led
the Huskies to a mark of 23-18 and sent a total of 11 wrestlers to the
NCAA championships, with one, Mike Spaid, earning All-American
honors in 2006-07.
Prior to becoming the Huskies’ head coach, Stutzman spent
five years as the recruiting coordinator at both Northern Illinois and
Bloomsburg. Stutzman has been able to bring in four nationallyranked recruiting classes with the 2003 Bloomsburg recruiting class
ranked as high as 14th, nationally, by Intermat.
As an assistant coach he has had the opportunity to coach over
22 NCAA Division I national qualifiers, two Division I All-Americans,
and one Olympic Trials participant. He has also coached for the New York Athletic Club at the
2004 US Olympic Freestyle Trials.
During the 2004-05 season, he helped coach six Bloomsburg NCAA qualifiers and helped
lead the team to a 10-win season. The Huskies won their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship since 1990, recording the school’s 14th title in school history.
Bloomsburg also had three EWL title-winners and two PSAC champions. That season, Stutzman
also helped the Huskies to their first win over Edinboro since 1993.
At Northern Illinois from 2000-2002, Stutzman coached All-American Scott Owen as well as
helping lead the squad to a second-place finish at
the Mid-American Conference Championships.
From 1998-2000, Stutzman served as the assistant coach at Buffalo helping coach the school’s
first Mid-American Conference champion. Buffalo
qualified six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in those three seasons and compiled a
19-10-2 record.
A 1998 graduate of the University of Buffalo,
Stutzman was 95-27 in a three-year career for
the Bulls and left as the school’s all-time leader
in career wins. His best year for the Bulls was the
1996-97 season when he posted a mark of 35-4. He
was a three-time East Coast Wrestling Association
placewinner and a two-time alternate for the Division I championships.
During his junior and senior seasons, he was
named captain and also earned team MVP honors
for two seasons.
Stutzman was a Region Three Champion and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler while
competing for Niagara County Community College.
Stutzman, a native of New Castle, Del., is married to the former Annette Hasseman. The
couple has one daughter, Alexa Bryanna, who was born October 4, 2006.
Assistant Coach Carl Fronhofer 5
Carl Fronhofer enters his second season with the Huskies after
serving as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh for two
years.
During the two seasons at his alma mater, Fronhofer was responsible for techniques and training methods in the wrestling room,
as well as handling recruiting for the Panthers.
Fronhofer, who graduated from Pittsburgh in 2003, was an AllAmerican his senior season, advancing to the NCAA Division I title
match at 174-pounds.
In his career, Fronhofer won 123 matches, losing only 39
matches. His win total is the third-highest in school history.
As a freshman, Fronhofer became just one of the five first-year
Pittsburgh wrestlers to win 30 matches in a season when he finished
the year 30-11. He qualified for his first NCAA Championships and won his first match at the
tournament. Also that year, Fronhofer won his second-consecutive FILA Junior National GrecoRoman title at 167.5 pounds and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler for the
second time in his career.
Fronhofer was an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL)
Champion at 165 pounds in 2001 and qualified for his
second-straight NCAA tournament. During the season, he
compiled a perfect 11-0 record in dual match competition.
After a third-straight appearance at the NCAA
Championships as a junior in the 2001-02 season, Fronhofer
moved up a weight class prior to his senior year. Following a
second-place finish at the EWL Championships, Fronhofer
won five straight matches before dropping the title match
to Robbie Waller of Oklahoma in a 7-3 decision. Earning
All-American status for his second-place finish, Fronhofer
became the first Panthers’ All-American in three seasons and
the first Pittsburgh finalist in 13 years.
Fronhofer graduated from Pittsburgh with a degree in
sociology. He was selected to the National Wrestling Coaches
Association’s Academic All-America first team as a senior.
A Salem, N.Y. native, Fronhofer was married to the
former Amy Andruskiewicz on August 12, 2006.

League (EWL) and 18 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
champions. The Huskies have two top-seven national finishes since he has
been a member of the coaching staff.
Martucci is a 1981 graduate of Trenton State College, where he
compiled a two-year record of 61-1-2 in addition to winning both the NCAA Division I and III
national championships his senior year at 190 pounds. Martucci was the Division III runner-up
in his junior year and was named an All-American three times while at Trenton.
Martucci has received many accolades, including induction into four Halls of Fame. In 1992,
he was enshrined in both the Trenton State College Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the Division
III Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 1990, he was inducted into the New Jersey Coaches Association
“Hall of Fame” and the Palisades Park (NJ) High School Hall of Fame in 1984.
Prior to joining the staff at Bloomsburg in 1984, Martucci served as an assistant coach for
the University of North Carolina, where he received his masters degree, and was head coach at
Chowan Junior College. At Chowan, his team posted a 12-1 record in his only season and qualified four wrestlers for the national tournament.

a 15-1 mark in dual matches at 174 pounds. In addition to dual match
success, Hasseman also won PSAC and EWL Championships in 2005.
In addition to collegiate wrestling, Hasseman has been a University
Freestyle All-American the past several years, taking second and third at
the championships.
During the 2003-04 season, Hasseman competed in open tournaments, wrestling over 60 matches. He qualified for the 2004 United
States Olympic Trials and has also represented the U.S. in the Canada
Cup.

2007-08 Preview 9
After back-to-back double-digit win seasons, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team
could be satisfied. In two seasons, third-year head coach John Stutzman has led the team to a
number of accomplishments: 11 national qualifiers, fourth and fifth place finishes in the Eastern
Wrestling League (EWL), recognized as one of the country’s toughest Division I conferences, as
well as welcoming a number of touted recruits into the program.
But, instead of being happy with its progress, the team is hungrier than ever before.
“We had 12 wins last year and with our returning starters and our talented pool of newcomers, we know can improve upon that,” said Stutzman.
Stutzman, a Buffalo, N.Y. native, was recognized as the EWL Coach of the Year, while freshman 149-pounder Matt Moley earned Rookie of the Year honors. The Huskies finished second
at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament and sent six wrestlers to the
2007 NCAA Championships, including an All-American performance from heavyweight Mike
Spaid who placed eighth. Spaid was Bloomsburg’s first All-American in 13 seasons.
“Our goal is always to win the EWL Championship and qualify all 10 of our starters for the
NCAA’s,” Stutzman said. “We’ve made progress the last couple of years, but everyone’s getting
better. All of our guys are working extremely hard and have put in productive off-seasons.”
Out of their six NCAA qualifiers, the Huskies return five, losing 184-pounder Nate Shirk to
graduation. Though Stutzman is excited and determined for the coming year, he knows the team’s
expectations must be higher than the 2006-07 season.
“We have great leadership in three-time NCAA qualifiers Mike Sees and Mike Spaid,” he said.
“With a lot of returners, including Darren Kern, George Hickman, Ricky Donald, and Jesse Hasseman, who is coming off a red-shirt year, we have the ability to accomplish big things.”
Here is a weight-by-weight look at the 2007-08 squad:
125—After three trips to the NCAA Championships, fifth-year senior Sees is ready to make his
appearance on the podium according to Stutzman.
“Mike has gotten better every year,” he said. “He’s beaten some of the top kids in the country
and has the experience and the talent to accomplish the goals he has set for himself.”
Sees was the 2005 EWL Champion, as well as finishing second in the league in 2006 and
2007. He’s finished as high as the top 12 at the NCAA tournament and is ranked in the top eight
nationally. He won the PSAC title the last two seasons and has a career mark of 78-16.
Sees will be joined by Ian Moser, a red-shirt freshman who won 50 matches as a senior at Caesar
Rodney High School (Del.) and John Martin, a freshman who was a three-time regional qualifier
at Springfield (Pa.).
133—Jason Guffey, a two-time PIAA State Champion will get the nod at this weight. Stutzman
believes ‘Guffey improved a lot last season and has the ability to surprise a lot of people. He’s a
tough competitor that learned a lot from his freshman season.”
Willy Mack and Ian De Sol, two freshmen, will also compete for time at 133 pounds. Mack
qualified for the regional tournament a number of times, while De Sol is a New York state qualifier.
141—Stutzman will have a wealth of veterans at 141 pounds in Donald, Hickman and Kern. Donald, a junior who wrestled 133 pounds the last two seasons, qualified for the national tournament
last year and had a 26-12 record last year. Kern, who was the starter at 141 last season, went to
the NCAA tournament and was the 2007 EWL Runner-Up, finishing the year with a 27-14 mark.
Hickman, who red-shirted last season, has placed twice at the EWL tournament and finished
in the top 12 at the 2007 University Freestyle nationals last summer.
Two underclassmen Alex Lauffenburger and Kyle Vincelli, will also look for time at this slot.
10 2007-08 Preview
149—Reigning EWL Rookie of the Year Matt Moley will return at 149 pounds. He finished last
season with a 27-14 record is ranked in the top 10 nationally. He was top-16 at the 2007 NCAA
tournament and placed at the EWL Championships.
“Matt has a year under his belt and is an extremely hard worker,” Stutzman said.
Kyle Friedman, a freshman from John Jay High School (N.Y.), will also compete for time at
this weight class.
157—EWL place-winner Dennis Bermudez will return at 157 pounds, having finished sixth at
the 2007 University Freestyle Nationals over the summer. He is ranked in the top 30 heading
into the year and had a 28-13 record last year.
“Dennis is one of the hardest-working guys in the room,” Stutzman said. “I’ve been around a
lot of hard workers, but he’s right up there. He pushes himself and it’s shown in his progress and
how hard he pushes his teammates.”
Alex Conover and Matt McMillan will also compete for time at 157 pounds.
165—2007 PSAC runner-up Ricky Schmelyun will return at 165 pounds having finished with 29
wins last year and placing at the EWL tournament.
Jonathan Brown and Mark Stassman will also push for mat time this season. Hoffman is a
PIAA placewinner, while Brown, out of Vermont, won multiple championships.
174—Brian Shaw and Nate Graham will compete for the nod at 174 pounds. Shaw is a sophomore out of Hollidaysburg, while Graham, out of New York, is a state champion, as well as placing second at the Fargo (N.D.) Junior Greco-Roman Nationals. Johnson is a three-time PIAA
state place winner out of Central Columbia.
184—Jesse Hasseman, who red-shirted the 2006-07 season, will return to the line-up for the
Huskies. Hasseman has placed at the EWL tournament twice in his career. Nate Johnson may
also see time here.
“Jesse is coming off a red-shirt season and has made a number of improvements,” Stutzman
said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid and works extremely hard. He loves the sport and has the potential
to have a very good year for us.” Johnson is a three-time PIAA state place winner out of Central
Columbia.
197—PJ DiStefano will return for the Huskies at 197 pounds. The sophomore is a two-time
PIAA state placewinner and will be joined by Eric Shaw and Nick Sacco at this weight.
DiStefano finished with 11 wins last year, including four by fall.
Shaw is a multiple-year state qualifier, while Sacco also advanced to the state tournament in
New York.
285—2007 All-American Spaid will return at heavyweight with a career record of 76-41, including a 35-8 mark last year. Out of Boyertown High School, Spaid won the PSAC and EWL titles
in 2006 and 2007 and will look to make his fourth-straight trip to the NCAA tournament. He
had 14 pins last year.
“Mike should have another big year for us,” Stutzman said. “He’s made three trips to the
NCAA tournament and has the ultimate goal of winning a national title. He’s got the experience
and talent to do so this year as a senior.”
Zac Walsh, Nate Knepp and Nick Weaver will also look to compete for time at heavyweight.
Walsh is a New Jersey state placewinner, while Knepp also placed at the state tournament in
Pennsylvania.

Eastern Wrestling League 23
Since the Eastern Wrestling League was formed in 1976,
Bloomsburg has enjoyed much success, both as a team, and
individually. The Huskies won the team championship in 1981
and 1993 and has never placed lower than sixth. Individually,
Bloomsburg wrestlers have compiled 34 titles.
In addition to Bloomsburg, the league includes Clarion,
Cleveland State, Edinboro, Lock Haven, Pittsburgh and West
Virginia.
Bloomsburg wrestlers hold three of the four fastest
EWL tournament fall times. Heavyweight Mel Sharp holds
the record with an 18-second pin in 1979, while Al McCollum, a 1982 title-winner, recorded a 36-second fall in 1981. In
1977, Leszek Radon pinned an opponent in 39 seconds.

Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for
most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility has all the necessary ingredients as it
holds a 3,000-seat arena for all home basketball and wrestling events, an indoor track, two tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and two handball/racquetball courts. The building
has classrooms and offices for use by the health/physical education and athletic staffs. Nelson
Field House also houses the wrestling practice room, which is a fully padded area located on
the second floor. A totally equipped Nautilus room adds to the strength and conditioning area
of the program, and Nelson Field House also offers a training room staffed by three full-time
athletic trainers. Also located in the facility is an equipment manager who handles the needs of
Bloomsburg’s 18 varsity athletic teams.
