SCOUT SHOP NEWS - Thanks to everyone who attended our "Get Ready For Camp" event on Saturday! JUNIOR TRAIL BOSS PROGRAM – Camp Jackson will launch a mountain bike program soon. Before the bikes arrive and the fun starts, Camp Jackson needs a trail system built for this program. It will take hard work and dedication to turn this dream into a reality. Trail crews will be based on volunteer labor force that will need direction and leadership to build the trails properly. We are looking for 14 dependable people to assume the title of Junior Trail Boss and to assume leadership positions. These individuals will become part of an elite team of trail building specialists. They will oversee the work of trail crews with an adult leader. They will learn the rules of trail building, building switchbacks, building in sloped turns, armoring the trail, etc. The Necessary Skills need for this job is the ability to communicate well, to work well independently or as a group, and the ability to execute a plan. Minimum Requirements for applicants: they must be 16 years old or older (adults are also welcome), must be able to work a minimum of 1 Saturday a month, must be able lead a crew of 5 or more people with an adult leader and attend Camp Jackson Trail School (4 hours of classroom with 5 hours of hands on trail work). For an application, click here Research and Program Innovation- will be sending a survey to about 5,000 Eagle Scouts from across the country under the age of 35 on Tuesday, May 8. The survey will be used to collect information regarding a few potential membership benefits given by joining the National Eagle Scout Association. An email invitation will be sent with the subject line “Tell us about some National Eagle Scout Association benefits” and will come from The Boy Scouts of America (paige.paradis@scouting.org< mailto:paige.paradis@scouting.org>). SERVICE PROJECT OPPORTUNITY- American Red Cross What: Replacing Enclosure Doors for Dumpsters at the Riverchase Red Cross Office. Steps included: Project Planning, Obtaining Materials, Construction of the Doors, Staining, Hanging the Doors. Timeframe: ASAP, but the Red Cross doesn’t have money to meet this need and will be very willing to work within a Scout’s schedule. In total, nearly 200 people were in camp for a fantastic weekend of service, a bit of fellowship, and a fantastic steak dinner. Congratulations to our new Ordeal and Brotherhood members! With the May Ordeal in the books, all eyes look forward to summer camp and NOAC. Summer Camp in the GAC — If your unit has not registered for summer camp, there may still be a chance for you to attend one of the Greater Alabama Council camps. Camp Comer and Camp Sequoyah are both at or near capacity and the few remaining slots are filling up quickly. If you’re interested in putting your name in one of those final slots, contact the council office. NOAC — Planning and preparation continue for the 2012 National Order of the Arrow Conference (or “NOAC”), set for July 30th through August 4th Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Coosa Lodge is riding chartered buses to the conference and ongoing fundraising efforts have dramatically reduced the cost for our contingent members. The current cost is $400, which is down from our original estimate of $600 and is actually below the actual cost for participants as set by the National Committee. It’s time for us to begin another wonderful week participating in Scouting - The Best Program for the youth in our communities today. Thank you to each of the participants in the Birmingham District Day Camp Training. It was a great feeling to see the entire room full of parents, leaders, and Den Chiefs ready to learn how we are going to have the best camp ever seen within the district. Special thanks to Deborah Hudson and Katheria Edwards for putting on this event. Another thanks goes to Deborah Huff for organizing Den Chief Training. This may have been the first Den Chief Training within the last five years and it is a great starting point. Den Chiefs are those Boy Scouts that are willing to serve as big brothers to neighboring Cub Scout Units to help them along the way. The deadline for the "Early Bird" registration is this coming Friday. This is the last date that you can qualify for the $30 discount to make the cost of the camp $66 for the entire week. NASA/McWane STEM Overnighters June 15-15, 2012 July 13-14, 2012 August 10-11, 2012 McWane Science Center 100 19th Street North Birmingham, AL 35203 The Birmingham District has been extended an invitation to participate in three overnight camp outs at the McWane Science Center. These overnight experiences are part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Program). Scouts will have a chance to have fun, learn and receive advancements at the end of the three sessions. Criteria for participating are: 1. Be enrolling in the fourth (4th) thru the ninth (9th) grades in the fall of 2012. 2. Be registered as a scout within the Birmingham District. 3. Agree to attend all three of the scheduled overnighter. 4. Have a responsible adult to attend with every scout. The cost of the event is $30 per scout for all three sessions and there are limited scholarships available. The McWane Science Center will feed the Scouts dinner, snacks, and breakfast the next morning. Registration forms are available in the link below. Click here FINANCE Have you completed your Scout Card sales? This was a tremendous way to earn more money for your unit. The money for this year's sale is due to the Greater Alabama Council Office NO LATER THAN 5:00pm on Friday, May 18, 2012. You are only responsible for paying 1/2 of the number of cards that your unit sold and/or the remaining cards. Remember, there is a strict guideline on how the commission will drop by each few days that the money is not turned in the office. LET'S GET IT!! MEMBERSHIP The Birmingham District is still showing several units that have not completed their annual charter paperwork for the 2012 year. If you have any questions on if your unit has completed this task, please give Brian Wilson a call at (205) 969-4276 or email bwilson@1bsa.org. If your unit has not rechartered, youth won't be able to register for District or Council events and will not be covered by the Council's liability insurance. TRAINING Unit Commissioner Training Unit Commissioner Training is coming. If you are interested in helping our scout units get stronger for years to come, join us for Unit Commissioner's Training. These trainings will take place Saturday, June 30, 2012 beginning at 8:30am. The location will be at the Greater Alabama Council Office in the conference room. Kudos to Cubmaster Mercutio Southall, Den Leader Bennie Freed, and all of the leaders of Pack 333 (Avondale Elementary PTO). Pack 333 hosted a one of a kind, one-stop shopping extravaganza for the youth in the unit and the surrounding community. Pack 333 began the day with an old-fashioned street fair full of games, prizes and food. They later held the Pinewood Derby followed by a trip to see The Avengers. If you think that was enough, the Scouts came back to participate in an Overnight Camp. This is the type of fun that we want to see all of the Scouts, Leaders and Parents participate in. So please contact me and we will make plans to get these taken care of. Our next round table will be June 7th at Ashland 1st Methodist church at 6:30 p.m.. Please come to this round table we will talk about our up coming SNFS campaign as well as our new and improved popcorn campaign, which we will see the come back of the much talked about tins!! We are excited for this popcorn campaign as we ave many improvements and hope that this will be our most successfull campaign yet. So please stop by to our roundtable this month. In the time spent he has been a positive influence on the youth and volunteer he served. Bradley Knobloch and Avery Gallup will be recognized at the Annual Mayor’s Luncheon on May 15, 2012 at 12 noon. Bradley Knobloch, a junior at Pleasant Grove High School, has leaded an effort to giveaway 3,300 tree seedlings to Pleasant Grove residents whose houses were in the tornado's path. Thou¬sands of trees were taken down in Pleasant Grove as a result of the tornado. Bradley and his troop have help residents plant the seedlings the same day. Bradley whose home was destroyed in the storm decide Avery Gallups, a sophomore at Oak Grove High School and member of Pleasant Grove Boy Scout Troop 120, is leaded the project. His project was to build a granite monument to honor the 11 residents that were killed in the deadly April 2011 tornadoes. Avery and his fellow Scouts have raised over $9,000 towards the project which was unveiled on April 28. Both Knobloch and Gal¬lups are members of Pleasant Grove Boy Scout Troop 120. Day Camp for Cherokee District starts June 18-22, 8:30am – 4:00pm at MLK Park. Click Here Alan Everett of Scottsboro is working hard to develop a system of trails for a mountain bike program at Camp Jackson. We thank him for his hard work and diligence. Please see the following article from him concerning the Junior Trail Boss program: Camp Jackson will launch a mountain bike program soon. Before the bikes arrive and the fun starts, Camp Jackson needs a trail system built for this program. It will take hard work and dedication to turn this dream into a reality. Trail crews will be based on volunteer labor force that will need direction and leadership to build the trails properly. We are looking for 14 dependable people to assume the title of Junior Trail Boss and to assume leadership positions. These individuals will become part of an elite team of trail building specialists. They will oversee the work of trail crews with an adult leader. They will learn the rules of trail building, building switchbacks, building in sloped turns, armoring the trail, etc. The Necessary Skills need for this job is the ability to communicate well, to work well independently or as a group, and the ability to execute a plan. Minimum Requirements for applicants: they must be 16 years old or older (adults are also welcome), must be able to work a minimum of 1 Saturday a month, must be able lead a crew of 5 or more people with an adult leader and attend Camp Jackson Trail School (4 hours of classroom with 5 hours of hands on trail work). Here is the application to be a Junior Trail Boss: Click Here Recently, Troop 4060 of Arab travelled to the Middle Tennessee Council's Grimes Canoe Base located on the Buffalo River. The troop camped out May 4 through May 6 2012 and used canoes and kayaks to navigate the spring fed river. Eleven of the scouts and nine adult leaders obtained the 25 miler patch by completing 17 miles on Saturday and 10 on Sunday. Sounds tiring but fun! Thanks!!! ***Scouting Spotlight*** Jordan Graves, of Montevallo, AL, recently earned the Boy Scouts’ highest honors award, Eagle Scout. Jordan is 18 years old and is a 2011 graduate from Valleydale Academy, where he graduated with a 3.9 GPA. He entered the Scouting program in middle school, where he joined Troop 220, Westwood Baptist Church, in Alabaster. Jordan was attending church service one night and saw the Boy Scouts having a Troop meeting in one of the rooms in the church. He decided to see what it was all about. Never did he imagine what an impact that decision would make on his life today. Jordan’s Eagle Scout project was to remove debris, rocks, and dead limbs to create a walking trail in the wooded area adjacent to Westwood Baptist church. He wanted to build the trail utilizing the Leave No Trace principles he learned in Scouting. He felt this would limit the impact upon the wildlife in the area while also maximizing the beauty of the trail. The walking trail begins its journey at the entrance to Westwood’s front parking lot and takes a meandering loop through the tall oak trees and across the quietly whispering streams to its destination at the entrance to Westwood’s back parking lot. While in the troop, Jordan served as a Troop Guide, Chaplain Aide, Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, Librarian, Troop Webmaster and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. He is a member of Westwood Baptist Church and is employed with Garden Vision, which is affiliated with Lowe’s Home Improvement. He is the son of Rick and LaVonne Graves of Montevallo.
