Elliot, William E. - Western Libraries
In order to improve access to more of the existing holdings of Western Archives copies of a number of preliminary finding aids are being made available. These preliminary finding aids, some of which were prepared many years ago, vary in degrees of completeness, detail and accuracy. Some provide only basic box listings of the contents of a fonds or a collection, while others provide additional background material. All are intended to be the starting point for access to the records and they should not be considered a definitive source of information on the full nature and Retyped - preliminary Decemberfinding 2015aids should contents of the fonds or collection. Questions about the information provided in the W. E. Elliott Collection be directed to archives.services@uwo.ca William Edward Elliott was born in Goderich on July 2611\ 1883. He was the eldest son of George M and Esther (Swaffiled) Ell iott. He attended public and high school in Goderich, and Business College in Chatham where he won the Gold Metal for his skill in shorthand. Elliott worked in Sault Saint Marie, on a Manitoba farm and in his fat her's grocery store before securing his first full time job in the newspaper business --with The News in Toronto in 1906. In 1909, Elliott joined the London Free Press; in 1927, he became the Legislature report for the Mail and Empire; in 1929, Elliott became the managing editor of the Woodstock Sentinel-Review; in 1941 he joined the Telegram staff in Toronto, where he occupied a variety of jobs from copy desk to editorial writer, and where he retired in 1958 to return to his hometown of Goderich. William Elliott left the London Free Press in 1915 to enlist in the corps of Military Staff Clerks. In 1917, he was seconded to the Canadian Expeditionary Force and sent overseas as a Sergeant of a cyclists platoon and later, he joined the l 51 Canadian Infantry Battalion. Elliott returned to the Free Press in 19 19. During World War II, he was on loan to the Wartime Prices and Trade Board newsroom in Ottawa from his job as the editor of the Woodstock Sentinel-Review. Elliott was the first to record word for word the election speeches of leading politicians of his day, and many of these speeches are still recorded in the many shorthand notebooks included in this collection. Elliott wrote and researcher a 150 page tabloid for the Signal-Star celebrate the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the town of Goderich. He is the author oftlu-ee booklets on early Huron Homes and families and a book on Canadian politics called Politics is Funny. Elliott wrote meticulously and was constantly correcting reporters, newspaper editors, and articles for their muses of the English language. His "who done this" letters hounded sloppy writers of the news. In 1909, William Elliott married Henrietta Shafer of Toronto. She died in Goderich in 1961 and he maiTied again to Ann Scotts of Caledonia who survives him at ... Elliott has h:vo sons and a daughter, Arthur T., Strathroy; Mrs. James (Florence) Whyard, Whitehorse, Yukon; and John P., Mississauga. William Ell iott DIED Friday, January 11 111 , 1980, at the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich. The W. E. Elliott Collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, notes and photographs which reflect his interest in the newspaper business, the Anglican church of Canada, the Loyal Orange Lodge, and the Ontario Temperance Federation. After his retirement in 1958, Strathroy kept active with his interests in the local history of Goderich and Huron County, Huron County Historical Buildings, his genealogical searches to trace his own fami ly's history and the histories of other families in the Goderich are. He made constant submissions to the Goderich Sentinel-Review on historical events, personalities, and build ings in the Goderich and Huron County area. The hi storical file series of the W.E. Ell iott Collection is composed of the materials used by Elliott relating to newspapers. The Elliott Collection is composed of ten boxes of historical fil es, ten boxes of editorial fi les and approximately ten more boxes of a variety of different items; personal fil es, war files, visual material (glass negatives, negatives of photographs, photographs, printing plates, slides and stereographs), pamphlets, scrapbooks, diaries, sh011hand notebooks, and government documents. Newspapers formerly contained in this collection have been removed to better storage facilities in the newspaper collection of Regional. Broadsides and maps have also been removed either to storage within the Regional Collection or the Map Library located on the University of Western Ontario Campus. The W.E. Elliott Collection is a valuable source of information on this history o f Goderich, Huron County, and Oxford County, the people of these areas, the Loyal Orange Lodge, the Ontario Temperance Federation, the First and Second World Wars, Southern Ontario Newspapers, and Ontario politics and politicians. The material in the William Elliott Collection create by Elliott dates from 19201974, however, much earlier material is found in the Historical and pamphlet series, ca, 1822- 1977. W.E. Elliott Collection Historical Files Description The historical files of the W.E. Elliott Collection contain correspondence, photographs, research notes, published articles, newspaper clippings, legal documents; for example indentures and deeds, copies of wills and contracts, magazine articles, and a few stereographs. These files are a rich source of historical information on the Town of Goderich, Huron County and Oxford County. The Historical files also contain valuable genealogical information on people and families in Goderich, oxford and Huron Counties, and in Ontario and Canada. Research materials compi led by William Edward Elliott on Huron County can be found under the series: 1 Huron, and 2 Goderich. The Historical fil es have been arranged alphabetically according to the title of the fil e. This listing lists the files by title as well as the subject headings and topic covered by the documents within the fil es. Not all the topics and subj ects have been listed and after the " P.S.", this detailed listing of topics had to be curtailed due to time restrictions. Note that this selection of important subj ects and topic was subj ect to the organizer' s biases. All files should be carefu lly examined by the researcher. Maps, Broadsides, and newspapers have been removed from the Historical fil es to proper storage facilities either in the Regional Collection or in the University of Western Ontario. Their new location is noted in this listing. l~. E.
