Kollam 4 city & around Kollam attractions Kollam town, the headquarters of Kollam district was an international emporium of trade and continues to be a prosperous commercial centre. It is situated about 70 kms north of Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital and is linked by rail, road and backwater transport. Children’s park Ashtamudi Backwater Ashtamudi Backwaters Ashtamudi Backwater derives its name from the 8 arms or channels (of the river). Ashtamudi lake is the southern gateway to the serene backwaters of Kerala. The 61km long lake, the second largest in Kerala,find its way in to the sea through the Neendakara estuary. DTPC provides boat rides as well as houseboat cruises on the lake. The trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is one of the most popular and longest backwater cruises in kerala . The 8 hours journey will give you an intimate experience of the famed waterways. Sculptur ‘Story Teller’ at Adventure Park Adventure Park Ashramam picnic village The village is situated just 1.5 km away from Kollam town, bordered by the Ashtamudi Backwaters at the northern side. Though very close to the town, the area has a tranquil atmosphere. The major tourist attractions of Kollam which are located in this vast village complex include the 200 years old elegant Residency Bungalow, where Lord Munroe once stayed, the Adventure Park, Children’s Traffic Park etc. KTDC’s new project ‘Tamarind Hotel’ is situated in this village. In order to inculcate the message of eco-friendly tourism and the need of physical fitness DTPC converted a forested area near the Govt. Guest House to Adventure Park with lot of swings, see-saws, physical education equipments etc. This park is now one of the most sought after destination of local people for pastime and early morning and evening physical exercise. Later boating was introduced and DTPC operates a variety of boats which includes pedal, speed, safari, semi deluxe, deluxe and houseboats. In order to provide safe driving lessons to the children and offer them good playing conditions, a Children’s Park was setup at Ashramam with very well laid roads sign boards and electric road signals. The park has more than 40 cycles and other playing apparels like Toy Train, Jumping Frog, Helicopter ride, and many multi-purpose play systems. This park attracts a considerable number of children durimg evenings and on weekends. Mangrove forest near Ashramam Police Museum : (Open 0900 – 1800 hrs. on all days) The only such establishment in the Country, it traces the history and development of the Police force. Police arms of the 18th and 19th Centuries and various other exhibits are displayed. The highlight of this museum is the Martyr’s Gallery (Ph: 0474 – 2742400) Kollam City & Around 6 Kollam Beach Thirumullavaram Beach Kollam beach is just 2 kms away from the city centre. The evening recreational beach at Kochupilamoodu is a stopover for the locals. Many tourists choose this locale to bask in the evening‘s beauty and to savour the sun-set. There is a beautiful garden named Mahatma Gandhi Park with many playing equipments & a swimming pool. Light refreshments are available at Snack bars and Ice cream parlors attached to it. Fishing and allied activities in the surrounding areas offer invaluable insights into the local culture. This secluded beach, just 5 km away from the city centre is a beautiful picnic centre (holiday spot). “Njarazhicha Para” literally known as “Sunday Rock” situated just one and a half kilometer into the sea, is visible from the Shore at low tide. Thousands of Hindu devotees perform “ Vavubali” on new moon days of the Malayalam month of ‘Karkidakam’. Mythology tells that, the Thirumullaravam Maha Vishnu Temple was built by Parasurama. This sheltered recess of the calm Arabian Sea is an ideal bay for swimming & bathing. Kollam 7 Neendakara Fishing Harbour The Coastal CircuitThankasseri Light House Thankasseri Fort, Light House and Breakwater History lies etched in the nook(s) and corners of this age old port. It was an enclave of the Portuguese, Dutch and British in succession. The sea side village of historic importance has the ruins of an Old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18th Century. Situated just 5 kms from the Central town the place is well known for its 144 Ft. high light house. The Thankassery light house is open to visitors from 15.30 to17.30 hrs. The 3 km long breakwater is a major attraction. A journey through the breakwater can be enchanting, to say the least. A visit to the light house and the panoramic view it facilitates will linger in the minds for a long time. Light House. Phone: 0474 2795619 Beaches & Backwaters Neendakara Fishing Harbour Approximately 7 km. from Kollam on NH 47 towards Alappuzha is Neendakara, a fishing harbor under the Indo-Norwegian project. Tourists throng at the harbor to witness the ‘chaakara’, a post monsoon phenomenon that occurs just off the coast. Neendakara is one of the largest fishing harbors of Kerala and is throbbing with activities related to fishing. Panmana Ashramam It is a unique and sacred centre of learning and service. It is located 18 kms north of Kollam city near the NH 47. It is the Maha Samadhi Peetham of Chattambi Swamikal. The Ashramam in its present form was founded by the late Sri.Kumbalathu Sankupillai, an ardent devotee of Swamikal. The Panmana Ashramam Kollam City & Around 8 Green Channel Resort Alumkadavu – Boat Building Yard Panmana Ashramam is situated in a placid and peaceful atmosphere amidst the lush coconut palms and paddy fields. The simple and serene surroundings of the Ashramam make it a veritable rural paradise attracting thousands of people. Several great men had visited this place to immerse themselves in this serene enlightening atmosphere. Mahatma Gandhi had visited the Ashramam and stayed for two days spending the time in prayers and contemplation. It is also a stopover point for tourists cruising through Kollam – Alappuzha sector. (Tel No: 0476 – 2670930) Clappana Located five km from Vallikkavu, Clappana is famous for its historically important church which was constructed in the year 1840 by the Portuguese. Sea erosion during certain period forced them to shift the altar ( Althara) to a new Church – St. George Church. The pillar of the Church had been built in Olivewood, which was brought to the shore by the tidal waves. The place has a rich vegetation of mangroves as well as thriving coir industry. Paramparya Museum The little village of Alumkadavu, 4 km west of Karunagapally is the first place in Kerala where Kettuvallam or Houseboat building industry began. The house boat industry is presumed to have started in this serene local boat hub 18 years ago. Around 10 traditional boatbuilding units are functioning adjacent to the coastal surroundings of Alumkadavu. Alumkadavu has a strategic connectivity to both the National waterway and Highway. Green Channel Resort (Ph: 04762628134) Kundara Vilambara Smrithimandapam Amrithapuri Ashramam This little village has shot to international fame as the residence and headquarters of Matha Amrithanandamayi, one of India’s great spiritual gurus. The residence named Amruthapuri is the realization of the ancient Indian ideal vasudaivakudumbakam -”The whole world is one family”. People from all over the world – speaking different languages and belonging to various religions with different customs live here under one roof. When people come to Amrithapuri Ashram for the first time, they are always surprised to find a remote fishing village on a small island cradled between the backwaters and the Arabian Sea becoming the centre of silent spiritual revolution. Amma’s (Amrithanandamayi) monastic disciples and devotees stay here, dedicating their lives for serving the world and realizing God. Amma’s children, within and outside India flock the Ashramam to have Amma’s Darshan. Amrithapuri is situated 25 kms. away from Kollam town and is accessible both by road and inland water way. ( Tel. No. 04762897578 ) Azheekkal and Cheriyazheekkal Azheekkal and Cheriazheekkal are the two points bordering Alappad, a very narrow strip of land between the Arabian Sea and T.S. Canal. Alappad is one of the Tsunami (2004) affected panchayaths of Kollam. Fishing is the main activity here other than mineral sand mining. A breakwater was formed at Azheekkal as part of the development of a Fishing Harbour. Alappad is also famous for 16 temples streching from Azheekkal to Cheriazheekkal. The Cheriazheekkal Temple is very old and it has a rich historical background with respect to the epic of ‘Chilappathikaram’. The first Prime Minister of India Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru once visited the Cheriazheekkal temple. The strategic location of Ayiramthengu and Azheekkal is also relevant from the tourism point of view. Ayiramthengu – Mangrove Forest It is an important mangrove locale under the fisheries department. There are ponds maintained for fishing purpose only. Amidst them lies a small and beautiful island, Edachirathuruth which has some fish ponds. The Portugese church established in the ancient period now falls under the Alappadu panchayath. The Thrirajapuram church is an extension of this church. Fisheries Office, Alappad Malsya Bhavan (Tel. .9496208766) Azheekkal The Coastal Circuit Vallikkavu – Amrithapuri Asramam 9 Kollam Ochira – ‘Dakshina Kasi’ 10 A pilgrim centre also called as ‘Dakshina Kasi’, Ochira is situated 32 km North of Kollam and 3 km before Kayamkulam which has deep impressions of Advaitha Philosophy. The Parabrahma, the Absolute reality, is worshipped here, which cannot be symbolized by an idol or housed in a temple. Hence there is no temple or idol for the presiding deity here. Its rich traditions and modern outlook towards life, cultural integrity and social harmony are the favorable reasons for the success of Ochira to be a Ochira Parabrahma Murthi Temple great spot in the tourism map of Kerala. The Oachirakali held in June and Panthrandu Vilakku Mahotsavam in November – December are crowd drawing festivals. Ochira still keeps the tradition of the Kavus, making this place historically important for Kerala. Ochira Temple Office (Tel. No. 0476-2690721) Krishnapuram Palace Krishnapuram Palace Krishnapuram Palace is a tourist destination, just 400 m from N.H.47 located between Kayamkulam town and Oachira. It is located on the border of Kollam and Alappuzha districts. The palace is maintained by the Archeological Department and contains exhibits that belonged to the Palace and its former occupant, the Travancore Maharaja Marthanda Varma. The palace is also famous for a large pond within it. It is said that an underground route runs from the bottom of the pond as a possible escape route from enemies. “Gajendra Moksham”, mural painting in the palace is the largest in Kerala. The two-edged Kayamkulam Vaal (sword) is also displayed here. The palace also houses, in its courtyard, one of the four statues of Buddha in Alappuzha District. Krishnapuram Palace (Tel. No. 0479-2441133) The Coastal Circuit 11 Munroe Island Paravur Munroe Island Coir making were the main jobs of the people. Traditional Kettuvallams were used for the carriage of goods to the nearby markets during the ancient period. About 200 hectares of land is being used for prawn farming alone. Oyster culture and shrimp farming are also being done here. (common here) To explore the beauty of this serene backwater village, DTPC Kollam conducts a country craft cruise twice a day. This peculiar Village Backwater Tour (VBT) has received an international acclaim in the magazine – There are small hillocks in Munroe lsland viz. Perungalam, Lonely Planet. The very narrow Pattamthuruth, Pezhumthuruth, canals linking the entire Munroe Island offers a very close view Villimangalam. Farming and The place Munroe Island is located 27 km north of Kollam, on the banks of Ashtamudi lake and Kallada river. Munroe Island is an amalgam of eight different small islands having an area of 13.6 Sq.Km. In the year 1810, Colonel Munroe was appointed as the Divan of Travancore and he handed over the island to Church Mission Society based at Kottayam. Monroe had created a new canal for easy navigation and to improve farming. In the year 1930 the queen of Travancore Rani Sethu Lakshmi Bai regained the island from the Church Mission Society. Sasthamkotta – The Queen of the Lakes and experience of the rural life of Backwater village of Kerala. The fish farms, coir-making units, anganavadis(village Playschool), country craft making units etc. make it an embodiment of sustainable development. The Kallada boat race held every year is one of the most popular boat races in Kerala. Country Craft Cruise (Contact: 0474 2745625) Another spot which is symbolic of the purity and beauty of Kollam district is Sasthamkotta, the largest fresh water lake of Kerala. It is situated 29 km from the town with the vast fresh water lake spreading over the valleys of several hills. Sastamkotta can truly be called as Queen of lakes. A boating through these tranquil waters can refresh your soul. The cool breeze that flows over it can caress the waves of the water and the mind alike. The place owes its name, Sasthamkotta to the Lord Sastha Temple. The monkeys of Sasthamcotta that colonies the towering trees are believed to be the loyal followers of the ruling deity, the Dharma Sastha. Sasthamkotta Fresh water Lake The Coastal Circuit 12 Paravur Backwater Paravoor Twenty kilometres away from Kollam, Paravoor offers an enchanting view of the backwaters as well as sea, which are located on both sides of the land. The narrow strip of land located in between the languid backwaters and blue sea is one of the most enchanting places in South Kerala. The destination is located very close to renowned Varkala beach and Kollam City. Pozhikkara Pozhikkara is one of the most scenic locales and ideal place for spending evenings. The serenity of the area attracts large number of tourists. Poothakulam Poothakulam is a typical and beautiful backwater village located near Paravur in Kollam District, which is blessed with vast expanse of backwaters and lush greenery. The place is well connected by road to the nearest town and railhead at Paravur. The village is located strategically between the backwaters of Kollam and the Varkala beach. Poothakulam has a rich cultural heritage which has given birth to countless Kathakali performers. The place has many ancient temples and is well known for elephants. Poothakkulam is famous for Elephant Ride. Polachira It is a village in Chathannoor panchayath with immense potential for tourism. An ideal place for bird watching as a number of migratory birds are found in this area. Polachira Kollam Kottarakkara Temple 13 The Midland Circuit Kottarakkara Kottarakkara is located 27 km from Kollam and 72 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The place was King’s residence in the past. Hence was named ‘Kottarakara’ which literally means “the land of the palaces”. (Kottaram means Palace and Kara means Land). The ‘Elayidath Swaroopam’, a branch of the Travancore Royal family, was the last ruling family of the land. Kottarakkara is a famous pilgrim centre for the Hindus as it is the seat of the famous Ganapati Temple. It is believed that the idol was sculptured by Perumthachan from the root of a jack tree. This temple is famous for its ‘Unniappom’. There are lots of churches in the area, mostly of the ‘Malankara Orthodox Church ‘ - St. George Orthodox Valiya Pally Kizheketheruvu and the ‘Marthomma Church’. Kottarakara also has its share of Muslim population. Kottarakara is the place where the classical art form of Kathakali was conceived. It was developed by Malamel & Sankaranarayana Temple Kottarakkara Thampuran (the King of Kottarakkara) as an alternative to Krishnanattom which had its origin in Kozhikode. The Kathakali Museum attracts a large number of tourists. It offers valuable information on Kathakali and its development. The Midland Circuit 14 Kottukal Rock cut cave Temple (51 KM from Kollam) The Temple situated on the Thiruvananthapuram – Kottayam road is an idyllic example of rock cut temple architecture. This temple is situated in Ittiva Panchayath. It has two cells on either side with Sivalingams in each with a projection carrying the figure of Ganapathy at the centre. One of the niches of the sanctum sanctorum carries the figure of Hanuman near the monolithic Nandi, probably intended to remind the Nandi- Vanara episode in Ramayana. Kottukal Rock cut Temple Malamel Malamel is located at Arackal village in Edamulakkal Grama Panchayath. The place is noted for its beautiful locales, mainly high rising rocks that offer uninterruptive view for miles around. The main attraction is the ancient “Sankara Narayana” temple on the rock face. Kollam – Kottarakkara(26 km) – Valakom (8) – Malamel (6 km) Trivandrum – Ayoor – Polikkodu – Arackal – Malamel The rock spreads within 13 hectors of land. The “Nadukanippara” which has maximum height, offers a panoramic view. Chadayamangalam Jadayuppara A huge rock at Chadayamangalam is celebrated for its mythological links with the Hindu epic Ramayana. It is believed that Jatayu, the giant bird in the Ramayana plunged down in his valiant but vain attempt to prevent demon king Ravana from abducting Sita, wife of Rama. On the top of the rock there is a small pond which has sufficient water even during drought. A line which is clearly demarcated in the rock is believed to be that of Jatayu’s beak. There is also a “Sree Rama” statue worshiped by the locals. The mythological importance of this rock attracts large number of pilgrim tourists. The wild nature of the rock makes it ideal for hand gliding, rock climbing and other adventure sports. The panoramic view of Sahya Mountains along east and Arabian Sea in the west also attracts tourists to this spot. Jadayuppara Kollam Pattazhy Devi Temple Maruthimala Muttara Maruthimala The Maruthimala spans across 25 acres of rocky surface need 30 minutes time to reach on the top of the rock. On the top there is a temple and the festivals are celebrated during the months of December and January. Small waterfalls in the vicinity includes Kalladathanni Vattathikkadavu Waterfalls (Vattathilthangal river) It is very close to the Jadayu Picnic spot. The place is very beautiful with natural surroundings with Ithikkara River as the back drop. Punalur Punalur is a beautiful town located in the Eastern fringes of Kollam District. This municipal town is the headquarters of Pathanapuram Taluk. It is situated 75 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 45 km North East of Kollam, the district headquarters. Punalur is located on the Kollam – Shencottah – Thenkasi highway. Punalur is the main transit point of goods from Southern Kerala to Tamilnadu due to its proximity to the state border. Punalur is located on the highway and is a transit point for tourists visiting the major picnic spots and pilgrim centers in the vicinity. Punalur was noted for its paper mill established in 1888 by British. It functioned till 1984 but was later closed. The highlight of Punlaur is the Hanging Bridge, the only one of its kind in South India. It was constructed in 1877 by Albert Henry across Kallada River. The bridge has three spans and is 400 m long. The construction of the bridge took six years. Punalur has temples of Ayyappa, Krishna, Siva and Devi. There are two Roman Catholic churches and a cathedral- “St. Mary’s Cathedral.” Punalur Bathing Ghat Punalur is a stop over for Sabarimala pilgrims. Tourism department has constructed a bathing ghat onthe shore of Kallada river facilitating bathing toilet facilities, stay, food etc for pilgrims. Bathing ghat is situated very adjascent to hanging bridge and it is one of the most attractive scenes of the town heart. Meenmutti Waterfalls Meenmutty Waterfalls It is located in the Kadakkal Panchayath and is replete with winding streams and rocks. Anchal Located 13 km South of Punalur, it is noted for its Mudi festival that takes place once in twelve years which attract huge gatherings. Anchal hosts cattle meet that is held twice a month. Pathanapuram Located 13 km North West of Punalur,on the banks of Kallada River, this town witnesses a hive of activity with brick making, bamboo weaving, livestock rearing and rubber plantations. The Chandanakudam festival falls in February / March every year. Pattazhi This village is famous for its highly revered shrine of Goddess which was built hundreds of years ago reflects traditional architecture. The Mudi festival is the chief attraction. Pookkunnimala It is situated in Pattazhi village. It is a rock stretch that extends to more than ten acres and the place is about 800 feet above the sea level. Punalur Hanging Bridge 15 Kollam Shenduruney Wild life Sanctuary 16 Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, owes its name to the endemic species, Gluta travancorica, locally known as ‘Chenkurinnji’. This sanctuary has been named after the tree. The Sanctuary is a valley of green splendour acclaimed for its rich biodiversity lying on either side of the Shendurnney River. This is the only wildlife sanctuary in Kollam District amidst luxurious greenery. (Ph. No. – 0474- 2329770) Parappara dam site The Highland Circuit It is 1 km away from Thenmala Eco- Tourism area. It is known as Southern Thekkady. Thenmala Dam Thenmala ( 66 Kms from Kollam) This is the first eco tourism destination in India and is located 22 km from Punalur. The site lies adjacent to Shendurini wild life reserve. The attractions include the sculpture garden, elevated walk way, musical dancing fountain, hanging bridge, tree top huts, board walk, amphitheatre, deer park, nature park etc. It offers great scope for adventure like boating, bamboo rafting, camping, trekking, rock climbing, mountain biking, river crossing, nature walks, bird watching and wild life trails etc. Thenmala Eco Tourism (Tel.No.-0475 - 2344800) The Highland Circuit 17 Achankovil Temple The Forest shrines of Lord Sastha (Ayyappa) Kulathupuzha ( 64 Kms from kollam ) Kulathupuzha is located 10 kilometers away from Thenmala. The famous shrine dedicated to Lord Sastha is situated near Kallada River. The divine fishes in the temple premises attract a lot of pilgrim tourists to this spot. Vishu is the major festival. There are also three famous mosques. Dense forests and tribal settlements can be found at Kulathupuzha. Aryankavu ( 70 Kms from kollam ) The shrine is situated in the mountains of Aryankavu. A temple dedicated to Lord Sastha. Aryankavu is located near the interstate border on the Kollam – Shekottai Road. There are fine sculptures and murals. The temple celebrates Tirukalyanam in December. Achenkovil One of the main temples of Lord Ayyappa, it is believed that the idol here is consecrated by Lord Parasurama himself. The temple is similar to the famous shrine at Sabarimala. The Manalar Falls and Kumbhavurutty Falls, which have Nature Interaction Center, are along the way to this temple. Aryankavu Temple The Highland Circuit 18 Palaruvi Waterfalls The beautiful cascades Palaruvi waterfalls ( 75 Kms from kollam. Open 0800-1800 hrs ) Palaruvi This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Kerala; falling from a height of 300 ft. Palaruvi literally means “Stream of Milk” Located within evergreen forest, there is the historical Kalmandapam made by Travancore Rajas. It peaks in beauty during June – January. It is in the foothills of Sahya Mountains in the Eastern border of Kollam District and is 6 kms away from Aryankavu. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in South India. Kumbavurutti waterfalls It is located at 4 km. from Manalar. The waterfall is beautiful like Paraluvi and Athirappalli. The location is also ideal for trekking and bird watching. Kutralam / Tamilnadu Regarded as the ‘Spa of the South’, Kutralam in Tamilnadu is the most famous waterfall in South India. There are as many as nine waterfalls in the region in Chittar River. The town has a well known health resort and attracts large number of tourists during the season. The Kutralanathar Temple and annual Saral festival are other attractions. The Highland Circuit Rosemala The district of Kollam is blessed with numerous beautiful picnic spots, mini hill stations and scenic plantation sites which are yet to be developed and showcased for tourism purpose. There are a number of little-known places of interest in the region. Lesser known hill stations and forest picnic spots Kattalappara known for historical caves and a hundred year old bridge. Ambanadu, 800 ft above sea level, with orange, clove and tea plantations. Kallar, located 1200 ft above sea level with forests, waterfalls, caves and plantations. Rosemala, 15 km inside forest is part of Agastyavanam Biosphere and has cardamom plantations, lake, waterfalls and remains of ancient civilization. Rajakoopu, 550 m above seal level, is a spice village settlement with clove and pepper plantations and trekking to Kurishupara. Boat Race held annually on Kerala Piravi Day (1st November) with all elegance and charm on the prestine waters of Ashtamudi lake at Kollam. Millions of people including foreigners assemble to witness the enthralling moments of the race. Kallada Boat Race (28th ONAM) President’s Trophy Boat Race Kallada Boat Race which has a history of more than 40 years is conducted on Kallada river at Munroe Island. It is held on the day of 28th Onam every year {August –September} and it attracts a large crowd on either banks of Kallada River. President’s Trophy Boat Race (First November) Kannetti Boat Race (4th ONAM- Chathayam) It is a major boat race in Kerala and the regatta was inaugurated by HE Dr. Prathibha Devi Singh Patil, the President of India on 30th August 2011. It is More than a race, it is a ritual that takes place on Chathayam (4th ONAM) during the Onam festival. The event is marked by a colourful water carnival. 19 Kollam 20 Elephant Pageant (Gajamela) Kollam Pooram (April 15/16) During March the Sree Krishnaswami temple at Ashramam Celebrates its annual festival. Lakhs of people assemble at Ashramam ground to witness the colourful pageant involving the participation of more than 50 elephants. “Kudamattam” is the most attractive event in Pooram. Panmana Pooram Parippally Kodimoottil Gajamela (March/April) The elephant pageant on the concluding day of the 10 day annual festival held at Sree Bhadrakali temple (Kodumoottil Devi Temple) is a real crowd puller. More than 50 elephants participate in this spectacular Pageantry. 4th March 2012 , 3rd March 2013, 2nd March 2014, 1st March 2015 Thazhuthala Gajamela The Panmana Pooram at the Subramanya temple attracts large number of people from neighboring villages/towns. Tourists cruising through the T.S. canal make it a stopover point during the festival days. Around 50 Elephants participate in the festival, which is a spectacular sight. Kollam Pooram The temple is located 10 kms east of Kollam. The presiding deity is Lord Ganesha. Elephant festival is held on the Avittam of Dhanu/Makaram (January). Mannoorkkavu – A temple for Kathakali Mannoorkkavu Devi Temple in Mynagappally is famous for Kathakali festivals. The main offering to Devi Vanadurga is Kathakali. These will be Kathakali in the temple nearly two hundred days in an annual year. (25 Km. away from Kollam.
