Welcome to
McDonald's Skills Zone
As someone who has played football all their
life, and with a young son currently playing,
I know just how hard, but also rewarding,
it can be to coach a team. McDonald’s has
supported junior football in New Zealand
for over a decade, and globally has been
a sponsor of the FIFA World Cup for over
20 years.
When we were talking with New Zealand Football about what
more we could do to support kids and their families participating
in grassroots football, the McDonald’s Skills Zone was an easy
choice. Many of our franchisees already have strong ties with
their local football clubs, and we love seeing kids getting out and
being active through their involvement with football.
We’re confident the McDonald’s Skills Zone will be a useful
resource for coaches, and popular with Kiwi kids. Whether kids
enjoy football because it’s a fun way to make friends, or they’re
inspired to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and play on the
world stage, the McDonald’s Skills Zone has been developed to
kick-start their dreams.

Intro from Ryan Nelsen
Coaching is a tough job! Whatever the age or level of players, the coach plays a crucial role in
developing skills, encouraging participation and most of all, making sure football is fun. As a
grassroots coach of a children’s football team you play a crucial role in making sure Kiwi kids
develop a love for the beautiful game. The coaches I had when I was young fueled my love of the
game and inspired me to be the best player I could be before moving into coaching, and I know
that the kids and their parents in your team appreciate your efforts. The McDonald’s Skills Zone
is a great resource to help you and your players, and I encourage you to use the drills, and get the
kids working towards the bronze, silver and gold certificates.

How to use this booklet
The McDonald’s Skills Zone is designed for players aged 4 – 12 years old and is in line with the
NZF Junior Framework, part of the award winning Whole of Football Plan. The Junior Framework
is specially designed to ensure every child gets the most from their involvement in football.
This booklet contains five sections of coaching activities, each focuses on a specific skill;
passing – dribbling – turning – shooting - ball control.
Within each section the skills are explored via four training components;
General Movement - Football Technique - Football Coordination - Small Sided Games.
All four training components could be used consecutively to create a full game day or
training day schedule and only basic equipment is required; balls, bibs and cones or markers.
New Zealand Football has provided recommendations for each activity showing the ages that
they should be used with. Most activities can also be easily adapted to suit your player’s needs
depending on their age, experience and ability. For example the size of the playing area may be
made smaller in order to suit younger players.
At the end of each section, you will find the McDonald’s Skills Zone Challenge.

What do I need to do, as a coach?
The McDonald's Skills Zone is made up of 5 challenges. They are as straight forward as possible,
but children may need your help (or their parents) the first time they try them, especially setting
up or adding up their points. Each challenge has a scoring system, benchmarked by age group
and into three levels; bronze, silver and gold.
You could set up a challenge and run through it with all your players once, encouraging them to
practice at home. Otherwise, players may just need a few tips before they try the challenge on
their own. The 5 challenges are available to download as a separate pdf from www.smallwhites.
co.nz/skillszone
After a week or fortnight, ask your players if they have been practicing. You could set up the
challenges and have the whole team run through them together.
Alternatively, individual players may try the challenges on their own and request you, or their
parents, to sign off their sheet when they have reached a specific level.
12 score sheets are located in the back of this booklet. If you need extra score sheets, a pdf is
available to download from www.smallwhites.co.nz/skillszone
When a player has reached a level for all 5 challenges, they are rewarded with a certificate
(held by yourself or your club coordinator). The certificate includes a voucher, redeemable at
McDonald’s restaurants.

Passing
Focus on Passing
McDonald's Skills Zone Challenge #1
This challenge is used to develop passing over short distances. Short passing is a great way of
getting the ball towards the opponents goal and reduces the risk of giving the ball away.
Minimum Equipment Required
• 2 balls.
Challenge
• You have 5 passes at the goal.
• 3 - 8 cones or markers (drink bottles,
sweatshirts, bags etc) to make a goal.
• You are allowed to choose which target
you decide to pass at.
Set Up
• Set up 3 targets as below (ask your
coach or parent to show you how to set
this up):
Scoring
• You score points for each successful
pass made, and the points add up to
your total score.

Dribbling
Focus on Dribbling
McDonald's Skills Zone Challenge #2
This challenge is used to develop dribbling in different directions and works on your touch and
balance on the ball. Players like All White Marco Rojas and Football Fern Sarah Gregorius have
been so successful because defenders find it difficult to play against players that can run at
them with the ball.
Minimum Equipment Required
• 1 ball.
• Dribble from the starting gate around the
centre cone, then dribble around cone 1.
• 6 cones or markers (drink bottles,
sweatshirts, bags etc).
• Dribble back around the centre cone, then
to cone 2.
Set Up
• Put one cone/marker in the centre and the
other cones in a diamond shape around it
(4 metres away from the centre cone).
• Keep dribbling back to the centre and then
cone 3.
• At the bottom of the diamond use two
cones instead of one, to make a “Starting
Gate” (marked on the diagram with an “S”).
Challenge
• Begin at the starting gate.
• Dribble around the centre cone for the
last time then back to the starting gate that’s the finish line, stop timing!
Scoring
• Your score is the time that it takes you to
complete the challenge.
• Start timing when you leave the starting
gate – ask a friend, coach or parent to
time, or count out loud yourself.

direction quickly. There are lots of different turns you can do that will help you get away from
defenders and here is a great opportunity to practice them.
Minimum Equipment Required
• 1 ball.
• 4 cones or markers (drink bottles,
sweatshirts, bags etc).
Set Up
• Use the cones to set up a 3x3 metre
square (ask your coach or parent to help).
Challenge
• You have to make 5 turns as quickly as
possible. Ask a friend to time or count
out loud.
• Start on one side of the square. Start
timing and dribble across to the other side .
• Turn around and dribble back.
• Repeat this twice – so you have turned
and crossed a line 6 times (including the
finish line).
Scoring
• Your score is the time that it takes you to
complete the challenge.

10 metres away
Put another starting cone (yellow) 2m behind
the shooting gate.
• Shoot at goal from before the shooting
gate (try not to stop the ball moving).

1pt
3pts
5pts
• For example, if you get two shots in the
centre of the goal (1+1), two in the corner
(5+5) and miss with the other your total
score is 12.

together to have a total score.
• 4-6 years old: Start with the ball in your
hands. You can have one bounce on the
ground between each keepy up.
• 7-8 years old: Start with ball at feet, the
ball can bounce once but attempt finishes
if it bounces twice in a row.
• 9-12 years old: Start with ball at feet and

NZF Coaching Pathway
Coaching is an exciting, challenging and ultimately rewarding pursuit and good coaches are also
a vital ingredient in the enjoyment and development of players.
Players who are learning the game require support and guidance at each step of the player
pathway, with coaches needing to create sessions that are relevant and realistic to the age and
stage of their players.
To help coaches get the best out of themselves and their players, New Zealand Football’s Coach
Education framework offers a range of high-quality flexible options ranging from junior and
youth football right through to courses for coaches working in the senior competitive arena.
The NZF Senior Pathway provides a route map for coaches who wish to coach adults in the
senior game, with the Senior Level 3 currently being the pinnacle of this journey.
The NZF Youth Pathway provides bespoke courses for coaches working at this key stage, as well
as preparing players for the adult game.
The NZF Junior Pathway provides a pathway for coaches to learn how to encourage junior players
to fall in love with the game, as well as maximise development at this important age.
Whatever your level of experience or knowledge, the New Zealand Coach Education Pathway will
have a course to meet your needs.
