Detroit Shoreway, Ohio City and Tremont neighborhoods finished at the top of a list of the hottest housing markets in Greater Cleveland. I applaud the success of the residents and leaders of these neighborhoods who have worked over the years at developing their areas to the level that more individual private investment is occurring. I believe the Ward 10 neighborhoods of Collinwood, Euclid Park, Glenville, St. Clair/Superior, and Nottingham Village can also work to the same level of success. I recently spoke about this during a meeting of Cleveland City Council that included Mayor Frank I am confident we can identify and follow the road to success and better neighborhoods. Jackson and members of his administrative cabinet. I told everyone there we that we could not just accept the success of housing markets in a few neighborhoods. We had to do more to stabilize housing in all of Cleveland, including Ward 10. What is missing is a comprehensive housing Continued on page 3 South Collinwood Dog & Cat Wellnes Day Thousands attended the 2014 Glenville Community Festival & Parade on Saturday, August 9. There was also amateur competitive boxing with top local boxers as well as vendors, activities for children and Seniors World – a special area where older visitors could comfortably take in the festivities. Attended by hundreds of residents from Cuyahoga County’s 10th district – which includes Cleveland’s 10th ward – the fair had valuable information from over 20 city, county and state agencies which included the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Child Support Enforcement Agency, Cleveland Heights Municipal Court, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and MetroHealth representatives who provided Leaf Collection Do’s & Dont’s Resident guidelines for leaf collection and disposal Please do the following: health screenings and medical care information. “We want to connect people with the people who can help them,” says Councilman Hairston. “We plan to make this an annual event, held in a different community each year. Next’s year’s fair will possibly be in or around Cleveland’s 10th Ward.” Anthony T. Hairston Cuyahoga County Councilman, District 10 Office: 216-698-2022 Email: ahairston@cuyahogacounty.us Festival photos continued Councilman Johnson would like to remind all residents that the City of Cleveland has discontinued its curbside leaf collection vacuum service. All Cleveland residents should gather and place fallen leaves in bags or trash cans – including the City issued black trash carts – for pick up on their regularly scheduled waste collection day (leaves should not be dumped in vacant lots; laws prohibit leaf burning). Sidewalks should remain free and clear of leaves because loose leaves drift and eventually end up in the street, clogging neighborhood catch basins which can cause flooding in streets and homes. Message Continued strategy and plan for Cleveland that would involve support for homeowners living in our neighborhoods to repair and improve their homes, more funding for the rehabilitation of empty houses that can be saved and the demolition of those that cannot, and creating opportunities for others to invest and live in these areas. The homes in Ward 10 neighborhoods are second to none in Greater Cleveland. We have impressive historic neighborhoods in the northeast of Cleveland that have established it significance in the history of our city. But the last 10 years of the housing crisis have been difficult for our neighborhoods and a higher level of effort is needed. This is why I am working with the two councilmen (Mike Polensek and Kevin Conwell) representing the other northeast Cleveland neighborhoods, Mayor Jackson, Cleveland State University and non-profit community organizations. Our unique partnership is focused on strategic planning. We will work with residents to implement the changes that will stabilize then expand housing and commercial areas, reduce crime and improve our schools. Our efforts will also make it possible for more public and private investment to occur that will lead to stronger northeast Cleveland neighborhoods. Over the next year I will be discussing the details of this partnership for change and seeking involvement from our Ward 10 residents. I am confident we can identify and follow the road to success and better neighborhoods. We already have much to be proud of and the ability to be more. Thank you.
