Just think of all of the
time we “waste”! There
are many examples of
ways people waste time,
especially with mindless
actives on our
smartphones, or by
disconnecting from
reality with sinful acts.
Let’s each take a
moment to estimate how
much time we wasted
this past week. On the other hand, we claim to be very busy. We tell
people how busy we are and how much we would like more time to
do nothing. The religious folk always say they wish they had more
time to pray. Strangely, when we find ourselves with exactly what we
asked for, more downtime, then we tell people we are bored and we
start wasting time again. Many authors have defined praying well as
“wasting time with God”. This is exactly what Mary was doing at the
feet of Jesus. Martha was busily working and Mary was wasting time
with God. Jesus tells Martha that what Mary is doing is better than
the busy work. We need to be careful not to miss the opportunity to
just “be” with Jesus. The good news is that Jesus wants to waste
time with each of us. He desires to share peace, joy, and freedom
with those who take a
few moments to sit
before the Blessed
Sacrament, read the
Word slowly, or pray a
devotion. Wasting time
with God is more productive than busy work. We need both, but let’s
not waste the time that God sets aside to be with each of us. ©2016

What does mercy look like through the eyes of another person? We
know how we would like people to act with mercy toward us, but what
is mercy to a family member, our coworker, or the person we walk by
every day? For each of us, there are particular things that are
meaningful to us and speak to our need for mercy. In spite of these
differences, we are still able to minister to one another, because the
love of God surpasses our differences and draws us all into the one
Body of Christ. In order to show others the love of God through acts of
mercy and compassion, we need to be attentive to their needs and the
way in which God is working in their lives.
1. Volunteer some of your time this month at a place where you will
meet a variety of people—for instance, a local community center,
a food bank, or a homeless shelter. Though everyone might have
different needs, all are
searching for the love and
mercy of God. Reflect on
the way your need for
God’s love is similar to
their need for God’s love.
2. Spend some time talking
with a younger or older
relative or friend.
Sometimes we ignore those
whose perspective on life is
different or far removed
from ours (being much
younger or much older than
us). Listen to what is important to them, recognizing God’s love
acting in their life and the way in which you can best act with
mercy and compassion toward them. Copyright © 2015, United

YEAR OF MERCY | POPE FRANCIS | WORLD YOUTH DAY
@Pontifex July 3
Loving and forgiving as God loves and
forgives. This is a programme of life that
can know no interruptions or exceptions.
Papal Prayer Intention for July 2016
Presider: Together, let us pray in solidarity with pilgrims
and communities around our country with the
special World Youth Day Prayer for the United
States.
Assembly: God our Father, be with us on our pilgrim
journey of faith. Give us the grace and courage to
step forward in faith and hope on the road ahead.
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see your face in all
those we encounter. Open our ears to hear your
voice in those who are often ignored. Open our
hearts that we might be faithful disciples of mercy
and truth. Holy Spirit, transform us. Empower us
to give of ourselves to the poor; to welcome the
lost; to forgive those who hurt us; to comfort
those who suffer and are marginalized. Bless our
group and those who travel on mission from the
United States of America to Kraków in Poland,
Land of Divine Mercy, to join the universal Church
for World Youth Day. Bless, too, those who
celebrate, united in faith and joy. Like the disciples
who journeyed up the mountain to witness the
Transfiguration, may this experience be an
encounter that strengthens us for our work in the
world. Through the intercession of Mary, the
Immaculate Conception, patroness of our
nation, may we be worthy witnesses of our faith,
humble representatives of our country, and
inspired missionaries bringing peace, hope, and
mercy into our communities. Amen.
Presider: St. James the Apostle, patron of pilgrim travelers
Assembly: pray for us.
Presider: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, young faithful witness
from our native land
Assembly: pray for us.
Evangelization:
That the Church in
Latin America and the
Caribbean, by means
of her mission to the
continent, may
announce the Gospel
with renewed vigor
and enthusiasm.
Our SAYA group will be accepting
prayers request and intentions
after all masses this weekend to
take to World Youth Day @
Krakow Poland.
Presider: St. Thérèse of Lisieux, patroness of missionaries
and advocate for youth
Assembly: pray for us.
Presider: Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, man of the
beatitudes and patron of young adults
Assembly: pray for us.
Presider: St. John Paul II, son of Poland and patron of
World Youth Day
Assembly: pray for us.

Statue of the Virgin Mary Reported
to be Weeping
A statement from
The Most Rev. Armando X. Ochoa, D.D.
Bishop, Diocese of Fresno
Last year, after referring to Medjugorje, our
Holy Father, Pope Francis, cautioned
against “basing one’s faith on apparitions
or anything other than Christ.” During a
recent daily homily, he asked the faithful to
understand that “the Kingdom of God is
among us” and to stop seeking “strange
things.” The Catechism of the Catholic
Church states: “Pastoral discernment is
needed to sustain and support popular
piety, and, if necessary, to purify and
correct the religious sense which underlies
these devotions so that the faithful may
advance in knowledge of the mystery of
Christ. Their exercise is subject to the care
and judgment of the bishops and to the
general norms of the Church.” (CCC 1676)
In regards to the development of a popular
devotion focused on a statue of the Virgin
Mary in a private residence in Fresno,
there has been misinformation circulating
that I have officially stated that this is a
miraculous event. This is not correct. I
have only reached out to a member of the
household by letter encouraging the family
to meet with one of our priests for pastoral
guidance. To date, the family has not
responded. The letter sent to the family
may be viewed on our diocesan website at:
www.dioceseoffresno.org.
As Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of
Fresno, I do not endorse, encourage or
authorize visitation to such a venue or
authorize donations to be received for
whatever purpose.

CUIDA TU POSTURA
Amar y perdonar como Dios ama y
perdona. Este es un programa de
vida que no puede conocer
interrupciones o excepciones.
Nuestra postura es muchas
veces un indicio de nuestra
hospitalidad y reverencia por el
Señor. Observa las acciones de
Abraham cuando saludó al
Señor en presencia de tres
hombres que aparecieron cerca
de su tienda. Corrió desde la
entrada de la
tienda a saludarlos. Se postró en tierra a su
encuentro.

desamparados. Aunque cada uno puede tener necesidades
diferentes, todos están
buscando el amor y
misericordia de Dios.
Reflexione sobre la manera en
que su necesidad del amor de
Dios es similar a la necesidad
del amor de Dios de ellos.
2. Pase algún tiempo hablando
con un familiar o amigo más
joven o más viejo. A veces
ignoramos a aquellos cuya

correcto. Yo solamente me he
www.dioceseoffresno.org.
Como Obispo de la Diócesis Católica de
Fresno, yo no respaldo, fomento o

camino a seguir.
misericordia y verdad. Espíritu Santo,
transfórmanos. Danos el poder para ofrecernos a
los pobres; de dar la bienvenida a los extraviados;
misioneros inspirados trayendo paz, esperanza y
misericordia en nuestras comunidades. Amén.
Sacerdote: Apóstol Santiago, patrono de los peregrinos
viajeros
Asamblea: Ruega por nosotros.
Sacerdote: Santa Kateri Tekakwitha, Joven fiel testigo de
nuestra tierra natal
Asamblea: Ruega por nosotros.
Sacerdote: Santa Teresa de Lisieux, Patrona de los
misioneros y defensora de los Jovenes
Asamblea: Ruega por nosotros.
Sacerdote: Beato Pier Giorgio Frassati, hombre de las
Bienaventuranzas y patrono de los jóvenes adultos
Asamblea: Ruega por nosotros.
Sacerdote: Santo Juan Pablo II, Hijo de Polonia y patrono
del Día Mundial Juvenil.
Asamblea: Ruega por nosotros.
