It’s beginning to look a lot like Xmas!
We’ve had our first sight of snow and it’s
absolutely Baltic out there - a perfect excuse
to warm your toes inside the many
notoriously gloriously gay venues of
Dundee. Where there is everything from
karaoke to born-and-bred local Dundee
bands playing loud and live to international
stars strutting our stages or even just a
simple game of pool and a pint of the usual.
Past Events: B4 Out have been, as
usual, providing their top-quality service with the cheapest drinks in town and the
cheapest pool in town, as it is still free all
day everyday! In the Abode they have been
working fast and furious behind the scenes
to get their new Fundays off the ground and,
with Joey Dunn as your karaoke host every
Sun, every Sunday is a Funday and with the
possibility of winning a free shot every time
you sing who wouldn’t want to try their
hand?! Down at the brother bar of the
Abode, the Salty Dog hosted their hugely
successful School Disco Theme Night with
School Dinners and a whole array of party
games, with everyone (vaguely!) kept in
check by the headteacher and his whip and
banging beats! Klozet has been doing great
things this past month in the Best Bar None
Awards! In Nov, Klozet picked up not just
one award, but three at Dundee’s very lavish
Best Bar None Award Ceremony, held at the
glamorous Apex Hotel. They won Dundee’s
Best Newcomer, Runner Up for BEST
Dundee Bar and an Accreditation from
Dundee City Council. You can all pop in to
Klozet and see them for real when you come
along for some karaoke or one of their great
live act nights! One of Klozet’s first nights as
award winners was held at the beginning of
this month on Sat 8th Dec when they had
the World’s No.1 Madonna Impersonator
Malissa Totten singing all of Madonna’s
greatest hits live! It was most definitely a
raving success and her performance was
utterly flawless! Out Nightclub as always has
been providing the best nightclub beats in
town and has had some really amazing
nights. You can always be guaranteed an
incredible time with a fantastic atmosphere
at Out with cheaper entry before twelve with
a stamp from B4 Out.

with its Xmas Theme Night with all the usual
Sat night japes. The Salty Dog will be having
its Xmas Theme Night on Sun 23rd Dec,
with lots of appropriately camp
festivities, Xmas themed games
and a free buffet with a Xmas
twist of course! Klozet is now
open every Fri and Sat until
2.30am, bringing you more
festive frolics! The highlight of
these frolics, however, will be on
Sat 22nd Dec with their Xmas
Party when they will have the
internationally renowned star
Kelly Wilde who will be singing
her smash hit Gloria and many more! Out
Nightclub will as always be pumping out hit
after hit every week with nights for everyone,
every week. The new club Aftertaste has
opened its doors and is looking extremely
fancy and nicely done up! Many great nights
are in store for you! The first of the many
notable fun theme nights is the Xmas Party
with a Down Under Theme on Sat 22nd Dec,
so get your shorts and flip flops out if you’re
brave enough in this weather!
This Xmas there is only one place to be:

The Tempest – Thomas Adès
One of the joys of this relay was hearing from Thomas Adès, who was conducting, from the singers, including Simon Keenlyside, for whom the role of Prospero was composed,
from librettist Meredith Oakes and producer Robert Lepage, all of whose contributions added to my understanding of this new work. The music is outstanding, reflecting and
directing the action: it’s easy to see why this work has been staged over 50 times since its première.
This production is set inside an 18th Century La Scala: we see the inner workings of the theatre as we see Prospero overseeing the plot which is all of his making. Simon
Keenlyside was magnificent both vocally and dramatically: his Ariel [Audrey Luna] sang stratospheric coloratura and, with the help of black-clad supporters, rarely touched the
ground. Toby Spence gave a superb Cameronesque performance as Prospero’s brother Antonio, the consummate politician who, blessedly, gets his comeuppance.

Well, it’s that hideous time of year
again... gluttony, chaos and unwanted gifts
a-plenty. If it all gets too much, there’s
solace on the scene as always.
Stick on your Xmas jumper, chuck a
snowball at a mate and get festive at Planet.
Things are hotting up nicely as the
temperature drops outside, with festive
drinks promos all through the month. On
Xmas Eve, after all the good boys and girls
are in bed asleep, Planet will be open for you
to bring in the big day with a cheeky drink,
and they’ll be making good use of their 3am
licence from 18th Dec. On Xmas Day the bar
will be open from 9pm, so when your dinner
has settled and the credits have rolled on the
early evening movie, get your glad rags on
and come and enjoy an evening of cool
tunes and perfectly chilled drinks. Boxing
Day will see a 4pm opening, and keeping
you in the mood for prezzies and turkey will
be DJ Miss Shazza Halliwell playing until the
early hours. Cranking up the tunes for your
enjoyment over Xmas will be favourites such
as Cilla Slack, Boytoy, Guinness and
Fredstar, with special guests popping in
from time to time. They will be playing
through the night, and when they finally
have to bid you goodnight, you can leave
wearing your discount wristband for GHQ
where the party carries on.
Hogmanay will be a spectacular affair,
with formal wear and/or tartan being the
theme for seeing in 2013. And you can start
the celebrations as early as you like, as
they’ll be open from 1pm! Miss Cilla Slack
will be bringing in the bells at Midnight with
the return of Planet’s Big Money Drop, and
there will be entertainment throughout the
evening. Though be warned, Miss Slack will
be after a midnight smooch…! This huge
party night will also be the culmination of a
fortnight of fundraising for various LGBT
related charities, with some amazing prizes
to be won. They will also have a piper
lending a traditional flavour to the otherwise
very much Planet-esque proceedings. How
posh! This year’s star attraction will be Miss
Barbra la Bush, returning to Planet after a
storming success earlier in the year. She will
be playing an extended run, gracing their
stage at 9pm every night from 22nd Dec
until an outrageous finale on New Year’s Day
and 2nd Jan. Planet will be open from 4pm
for hair of any dog you like! It all sounds
pretty great, and that’s without their regular
nights - karaoke every Sun and Thu,
following the ever popular big cash quiz. So
get to Planet and see for yourselves! John,

Over at Elbow, a very special festive
surprise is to be had on Sat 22nd Dec with
the return of 3 Piece Sweet, for an Xmas
party from 9pm-3am. After 8 years of being
very responsible, grown up adults by
having babies and opening bars, Sally,
Wendy and Nicki have had enough and are
BACK for a very irresponsible night at their
favourite bar. Famous for their “no music
policy” music policy, 3 Piece Sweet were hot
and regular faces for numerous List,
Hogmanay and Film Festival nights as well
as the infamous Basement Bar Birthday
Parties, and they never failed to deliver.
Expect to hear anything from old to new to
cutting edge to kitsch - the kind of music

new person! DJ Lynne is on the decks all

Party, with stilt walkers, grinders and fire
breathers making this Hogmanay one to
remember. In the dance bar they will be
holding the ultimate UV party with UV
cannons, UV face painting and a fully dec’d
out club. Join DJ Michelle with her awesome
dance mash ups and show Edinburgh how
you party.
Plenty there to keep you occupied
through the month! Don’t go too mad on the
festive bingeing, don’t make resolutions you
can’t keep and don’t do anything you won’t

This yuletide season I’m bringing you not just my words - but
the words of bar
managers across the
scene. I thought
December would be the
best month to take a
look back at what a
great year 2012 has
been, whilst looking
forward to 2013 and the
new exciting things our
scene is bringing us. It’s
been a great year in
Glasgow’s Gay Scene.
Staff have come and
gone, literally, and
plenty of drinks promos,
entertainment and drag queens have been
had.
Due to timings of this issue going to
print, a couple of venue managers
were unable to get back to me to
answer their questions in our
interview - so I thought I’d not
omit them, but include them in
my ramblings this month.
AXM are no longer the
newbies on Glasgow’s Scene, with
The Merchant Gallery opening
just a stone’s throw away. Two
streets back and opposite The
Brunswick Hotel, The Merchant
Gallery offers to be an intimate
wine bar with a dash of cabaret. From the
outside the bar looks sophisticated and cosy,
so I look forward to getting in and seeing
what Jim and Grieg have to offer.
AXM have been raising lots of money
for charity with a lot of events and
fundraising - I’m still not sure if Darren Pop
got a name tattoo’d on his bum cheeks - but
he certainly made a good effort to raise
money for AXM’s chosen charity, Moni
Malawi. AXM brought Barbra La Bush back
to the scene when they opened the club on a
Mon and the management, bar staff, door
stewards, entertainment staff and PR staff
worked for free to end their fundraising
week.
If you’ve been about Glasgow’s scene as
long as I have, you’ll
have popped your head
in to Milk (formerly
Scene) at least once - it’s
lively but homely
atmosphere was always
one to captavate an
audience. The guys at
Milk have been offering
cheap drinks and good
entertainment for
another year and I’m
sure they’ll be taking that
in to the New Year.
Merchant Pride and
The Waterloo are the
two bars on the outskirts
of the scene - but very well embedded in
Glasgow’s Gay Scene culture. They’ve both
been bringing us Cherri Trieffel and a host of
other entertainers to brighten up what most
think are quiet pubs. If you’re on the scene
but not been to either of them, make it your
New Year’s resolution to get into them both
in Jan.
So, every bar, eatery and adult
emporium in Glasgow has had their
opportunity to tell us about their highlights
and embarrassing moments of 2012 and
we’ve got a few inside scoops of what is
likely to happen in the future. Take a good
read and enjoy the Xmas festivities. Where
ever you go this Xmas, whether you are
staying in Glasgow with your friends or
loved ones, heading home with family or
being one of the lucky bitches that goes on
holiday - stay safe, wrap up warm and
always wear a condom. I’ve enjoyed bringing
you new features to Glasgow’s review of the
Scene here in ScotsGay and look forward to
bringing you more as the New Year comes
in.

HIGHLANDS
World AIDS Day was marked in
Inverness with a well-attended, community
gathering at the Cathedral. This all-inclusive,
family-friendly event was hosted by Bishop
Mark Strange on behalf of Waverley Care,
and the Provost of Inverness was also in
attendance.
Local Church of Scotland minister Rev
Peter Nimmo, spoke movingly about the
recent loss of his cousin to HIV in a personal
reflection entitled ‘What World Aids Day
means to me’. Dr Gordon McKenna spoke
about the significant increase in HIV cases
he has seen at Raigmore hospital during the
last 15 years. During the service there was
an opportunity to name and remember those
who have died.
This year’s theme was ‘tackling HIV together’
and the focus was on the impact of stigma
on people who are living with HIV in
Scotland. There was a short film, part of the
Waverley Care Always Hear project which
tells the stories of four individuals who are
living with HIV in Scotland. People at the
gathering in Inverness watched Susan’s
story, which tells of her diagnosis in
pregnancy, her subsequent struggles as a
single parent and her life now as a healthy
working woman whose child is a 26 year old
man.
Musical entertainment was provided by
pupils from Bun-sgoil Ghaidhlig Inbhir Nis,
whose contribution was greatly appreciated
and enjoyed. Refreshments were served by
volunteers after the service.
Scott Cuthbertson from the Equality
Network hosted a consultation in Inverness
on 4th Dec, following on from similar events
in Elgin, Portree and Stornoway where the

local LGBT communities were asked about
their priorities for equality. Education to
tackle ignorance and lack of understanding
was top of the agenda at the Inverness
meeting, as well as more training for staff in
schools and other employment sectors.
Those present in Inverness agreed many
people in the Highlands still find it difficult to
come out, particularly in rural communities
and areas with a strong church influence. It
was suggested that diversity champions and
peer support in schools and colleges could
increase young people’s confidence to come
forward. The need to increase visibility was
seen to be essential.
A recent Highland Council report said
there was only one reported incident of
homophobic bullying in Highland schools
between May 2011 and May 2012. Caithness
councillor Alex MacLeod said, ‘I don’t
believe for a minute that there was only one
incident of homophobic bullying in the
Highlands’ and called for a more effective
and supportive reporting system. Earlier this
year, Cllr MacLeod said he looked forward to
making full use of the new same-sex
marriage legislation.
The Highland LGBT Forum ran a free
film night in Thurso on St Andrew’s Day, and
this was followed by a scenic walk and social
lunch at John o’ Groats. As a result, the
Forum hopes to provide support for a new
Caithness LGBT group to encourage people
to socialise in the area.
In 2013, the Highland LGBT Forum will
be holding one-day conferences for
interested parties (public sector workers,
schools, unions, charities, etc.) with
speakers from Stonewall Scotland, the
Equality Network, Northern Constabulary,
NHS Highland and Highlands & Islands
Equality Forum. An evening film show will
also be arranged for local LGBT folks.
Venues booked are Nairn Community & Arts
Centre (25th Jan), An Drochaid in FortWilliam (22nd Feb) and Caithness Horizons
in Thurso (22nd Mar). The charity will also
be visiting Skye and Stornoway, and
hopefully Orkney and Shetland.
More good news on the horizon is that
LGBT Youth Scotland is recruiting a parttime Youth and Community Development
Officer to be based in Inverness. If you wish
to apply, click on the Jobs section on their
web site. Let’s hope this can raise the profile
of LGBT young people and offer them a safe
space in which to receive support. For news

The Highland Rainbow Folk will be
hosting a free film night at Eden Court on 13
February 2013 as part of LGBT History
Month. Funded by Highland Council, the
event will show 3 short films and include
stories from members of the group.
LGBT Moray’s Christmas night in Forres
was a huge success with some 30 folks
from Inverness to Inverurie. The last Pink
Castle walk ‘n’ talk of the year will be in
Golspie on Sunday 16 December and the
Guys’ Christmas Night Out in Inverness is on

Here we go with the final update of
2012 from this corner of Scotland. News on
RGU: LGBT+, Cheerz, GMH and more...
Having had such a phenomenal first
year, with achievements including winning
“Best RGU Society 2011/2012” and coming
second in three National Union of Students
Scotland awards: ‘Student of the Year’,
‘Event of the Year’ and ‘University of The
Year’, the RGU: LGBT+ society hosted their
1st Birthday to celebrate their achievements,
their new society members and Robert
Gordon University, for finally having a
LGBT+ society which can support, interact
and socialise with the LGBT+ people in RGU
and in Aberdeen.
To mark the birthday of RGU: LGBT+ on
11th Nov, the committee hosted an open
event on Fri 10th Nov based on a LGBT+
themed Pub crawl. The idea was to visit the
pubs and clubs in Aberdeen and create a
rainbow by using different coloured drinks in
each one.
The night was a mix of the old society
members, new RGU freshers and friends
from other LGBT+ groups around Aberdeen
such as Aberdeen College LGBT+, Ab-Fab
Society and GMH.
The party guests started arriving at
RGU: UNION at 7.30pm and the drinking
commenced continuing to Triple Kirks Bar
where the recollection of the following pubs
was a bit hazy. The rainbow partiers
staggered between the bars in Belmont
Street, finally stumbling across the finish
line at Cheerz.
With everyone safe and merry at their
final venue, the RGU: LGBT+ers were treated
to an exclusively old fashion birthday party
in the nightclub upstairs. The party started
off with a bang as Cheerz bar staffed
prepared a spectrum of shots and glasses of
champagne. This was followed by a special
cake with rainbow layers, a birthday card for
everyone to sign, party bags filled with

are in the planning stages of the gayleidh for
2013 with a date of 16th Mar which will be
raising funds for Broken Rainbow, the LGBT
domestic abuse charity and helpline. More

Gay Men’s Health (GMH) in Grampian
are continuing to put their mark on the
region by continuing with some great work
including a joint World AIDS Day set of
events which culminated in an event held in
Cheerz which raised over £1,000 for both
GMH & Terrence Higgins Trust, both teams
would like to say a huge thank you to
everyone who helped organise, take part and
make the night the success that it was.
As well as traditional outreach where
you will have seen team GMH out and about
on the scene, they have been trialling eoutreach using a variety of sites and apps to
speak with guys across the region. If you
want to chat to the guys look out for them
on Gaydar and other sites on Thu and Sat
from 8-10.30pm.

Cheerz has had a great year bringing
more acts to town, earlier opening hours so
you can pop in for a coffee and a gossip and
bringing the fun back with a host of
glamorous drag entertainers to liven up your
week. This year the club will be open on
Xmas Day for all you lot that have eaten too
much and want an escape to dance off the
indulgence! New Year will be £5 entry in the
club with a few surprises planned I am sure
from Steve, Garry and the team. For more

1. Underground has had such a brilliant year, it seems
to have flown by! The highlights for us have to be the
first annual Gay Ball fundraiser and Pride Glasgow.
The Gay Ball was a fantastic (and very drunken) evening
for all of team Underground who dolled up to the nines
and partied until the early hours.
It was such a brilliant night and raised over £20,000 for
the Brownlee Centre at Gartnavel Hospital!!
Then there was Pride Glasgow, we had a fantastic day
and Pride is always such a riot, in a good way. Seeing
everyone pull together to make it so successful was
wonderful and my personal highlight was watching our
resident DIVA, Bee Fiarse Beaujambes, perform on the
main stage. A fab Year....What's next??!
2. Never! I'm sure anyone who knows us will know that
we are always, sometimes, occasionally, on our very
best behaviour!!! Anyway there’s probably lots of
sordid, salacious rumours of untoward behaviour,
frolicking and romps taking place in Underground but
they are all almost certainly only 50% true! Haha!
3. Well, as always, we have a schedule of fun and carry
oans packed tighter
than a drag queen’s tuck, including Bee's, who's
managed to get her-beautiful-self in our faces 3 days a
week! She hosts 'Queeraoke' every Tue night, Bingo on
a Sat afternoon and our newest edition, Sun evening
'Cabareoke', which seems to be a natural progression
from our Camp Sunday afternoons which are packed
full of musicals. It's a julie-barbara-judy-liza
extravaganza!
You can also look forward to an intellectual orgy on
Wed evenings with our Gerrybear, in his new weekly
Quiz! So you can be sure of a good night with the
friendliest bear in town!
All in all, Underground will strive to continue to provide
a fun pub for everyone and anyone who wants to have a
good time in 2013.

1. My favourite moment of 2012 was being the manager
of GHQ in Edinburgh when we proudly sponsored Pride
Scotia - It was such an amazing day with great people. I
guess the next best thing would be moving back to
Glasgow to work with the amazing people and
customers in Speakeasy. Nancy Clench really keeps me
busy!
2. A couple of embarrassing moments but none that
you could print! (Ed - We'll print some soon enough,
I'm sure!)
3. 2013 will be the best year in Speakeasy's history.
We'll be continuing all the great nights we currently run,
having just brought back the Tue Quiz with Leah and
continuing Karaoke, Kabaret and Broadway Nights with
Nancy Clench. Our Weekends will be growing bigger
and better as well, lots of plans, lots of organising and a
whole lotta fun to be had!

one day release a book called "Hanvey's antics and awkward moments" as some things that happen can only
happen to me!
3. We are planning a good year ahead for Dels, taking it
forward not only from a business point of view but also
from a customers, with a whole new weekly rundown in
place it's going to be eventful, watch this space!

1. The Gay Gala 2012 - so much hard work and planning made the day a massive success. It was quite
stressful but certainly worth it.
2. Embarrassing moments? Why, I couldn't possibly!
3. Polo 2013 so much planning and organising has
gone into the New Year already! I can't give much away
but there is always something going down to appeal to
everyone. More investment into community projects so
we will have some great events in the near future.
1. My favourite moments are the ones I spend talking to
all the guys and girls who come into the shop telling me
what they've been up to, who's seeing who and all the
general banter. It's fun when Nancy Clench comes in
and serves behind the counter - lol - she’s a natural. The
birth of Gerry Bear’s Bertha in Underground was special
too.
2. Standing beside Nancy Clench when she wasn’t
wearing any tights and was possibly commando – lol!
3. Hopefully the return of the fish and chip shop, the
gay chippy coming home.
The counselling is not only for men living with HIV but
anyone who feels they need support on any issue. If it
wasn't for the generosity of people putting money in the
collecting cans and buckets the counselling service
would close down as it is not funded by any other
source. I feel a tremendous pride that people in
Glasgow have kept this going in these difficult times.
2. GMH has offices in three cities in Scotland Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. So, being
responsible for the whole organisation, I do need to
travel around to meet staff. There have been a couple of
occasions (which shall remain nameless) where I have
turned up for a meeting in the wrong city, whilst staff in
a different part of the country are sitting waiting for me.
Embarrassing.
3. We are very excited and proud to have a full sexual
health clinic for gay and bisexual men based at GMH,
4/1 30 Bell Street in the heart of the Merchant City in
Glasgow. The clinic will not only be offering a full
sexual health screen, it will also be giving treatment
there and then. The big thing for us though, (and this is
a first for Glasgow) it will be offering an HIV test with
results given in 20 minutes. It means no waiting
around, and the clinic is a drop in. We will let people
know via live Twitter and Facebook feeds if there are
spaces available, so if they don't want to wait they can
check online and run down if they are out and about. It
started on 6th Dec and will run every Thu from 4.307.30pm so it's handy for finishing work. We have taken
the decision not to close it during the Xmas and New
Year holidays, so men will know it is always running.
This is a major addition for Glasgow and one which I
and the GMH team are very proud of introducing in
partnership with SRP at Sandyford.

1. That crazy, sleepless, stressful, eye-opening, riotous
week when we opened the Riding Room doors for the
first time back in April, saying a bittersweet goodbye to
Moda, and embracing the concept and direction that is
our wee cabaret bar, and then seeing all your amazing
reactions and hearing all your positive feedback!
2. This only ever happens in front of lots of customers:
I'm constantly getting my braces caught in the spirit
speedrails, and yanking whatever they are caught on
into the air. Watch out for low-flying bottles of Morgan’s
Spiced.
3. Plenty more burlesque and boylesque and magic on
Fridays, we're bringing back the bands for full sets on
Saturdays, we'll be launching a new cocktail list in time
for our one-year anniversary, lots more teacup and
punch kettle sharers! Cause we know you love them!

1. A year is a very long time on the scene and I'm very
happy Trophy has continued to be busy with its loyal
followers. I loved working in the original Trophy Room
at Polo but my favourite time has got to be the relaunch night in FHQ, the scene would be no fun without
Suave Gav’s cheesy Sat night! Another of my favourite
moments was Nancy's cash dash!
2. Oh there have been many embarrassing moments, I
couldn't pick a few, luckily our customers see the funny
side and laugh along with us!
3. Well, we get to look forward to Trophy Room’s big
first birthday, to celebrate bringing in 2013! The rest
you will have to wait and see!

1. On the Glasgow gay scene there are little GMH
collecting cans which the bars put on display. As well
as that venues have been doing various fundraising
activities in the year. This has meant that those donating
have funded the GMH counselling service in Glasgow.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are with some exceptions for trans people about to see full equality. It is happening in
our lifetimes. When I started the Scottish
Media Monitor in 1995, examining the
treatment of sex and sexuality in the Scottish
media, our full emancipation seemed quite
improbable given the surfeit of moral
conservatives and religionists in the
mainstream media. I’ve moved on too and
am more interested these days in defending
secularism as the religious right prepare to
make this their next target. It’s no small task:
The House of Lords has 26 seats reserved
for unelected religious clerics that legislate
on Scottish issues; 32 education committees
in Scotland have three unelected religious
affiliates sitting on them, (one for the Kirk,
one for the Catholics and one other,
depending on which religion exercises the
most muscle. On the Shetlands or Western
Isles: two more!) And did you know that to
get schoolgirls in Catholic schools vaccinated
against cervical cancer in their schools, the
Scottish government agreed to remove all
references to condoms offering protection
against other sexually transmitted diseases
on accompanying safer sex literature, not
just in Catholic schools, but in nondenominational schools too? Along with all
the religious tax-breaks it can get quite
depressing, so it is nice this Xmas to look
back on how far we’ve come. Here are some
stories I was reporting on this time 15 years
ago…
They’re planning to turn the Scottish
Exhibition and Conference Centre “into the
biggest sex shop in Europe for three days...!”
Just in case you missed it last time round in
the moribund Scottish Daily Mail, another
piece headed: “Red faces at sex shop show
of ‘depravity’,” one half of comedy duo
Wallace & Connelly (at this time most stories
exhibiting a need for a ‘moral’ dimension
carried quotes from the Kirk’s Bill Wallace
and Catholic Tom Connelly) dusted himself
down for another airing: “We have enough
problems in this city without importing this
depravity”. They even managed to find a
Glasgow Tory councillor, a John Young, who
espoused: “A large section of the population
will find this totally offensive but, given the
track record of the Labour administration
here, they will probably find a way of giving it
a grant”.
A quite considerable insult to people of
transgender was made in a report on a
“policeman who wanted to be become a
WPC” by the Daily Record. Headed “AC-DC
PC gets marching orders from the police”,
the tabloid wallowed in stereotypes and
misrepresentation to declare: “A gender

bender policeman who wanted to become a
WPC has been sacked”. One of the most
difficult aspects to sexual reassignment is the
need to practice living your life in the gender
role you have always been most comfortable
with. That meant, for this PC, going to work,
apparently as a transvestite. The Daily
Record reported the story concerning 31year-old Alex, based at Edinburgh’s Waverley
Station with exaggeration, ignorance and no
explanation. “He used to turn up for work
wearing make-up, skimpy tops and highheels and asked his colleagues to call him
Susan. He even started to develop breasts
because of his treatment”. The copy was
wrapped around a piece on comedian Jack
Dee who was “set to shock fans... by
dressing up as a woman”.
The puritanical Sunday Mail found
“SLEAZE ON WHEELS”, and cornered a
“filthy video porn peddler... Ashok Srivastava
advertises his mobile phone number in
adverts for sex tapes. He then delivers the
hard-core films direct to the customer”. Hard
core? The Sunday Mail shows a clip of a
woman in black stockings and a corset.
Sensitive journalist, Russell Findlay turned up
to look at the tapes and “the sleaze merchant
then produced two boxes filled with more
than two dozen different video tapes... Some
of the films are imported from the Continent
while others are amateur UK efforts...
Ashok’s bizarre home-delivery business may
have come into being after police raided
three Glasgow video shops. Cops seized a
massive haul of depraved tapes in the swoop
last month”. Nice to see the police doing
something really useful for a change, isn’t it?
“What seems to be happening to my
Glaswegian?“ begs Flora Davids from
Hillhead of its editor. On the letter’s page she
says she has had to endure “articles about a
festival called Glasgay. Never in my life have I
heard of such a ridiculous event. And the
picture beside that story (a couple of Scots
soldier boys necking) almost put me off my
breakfast. (Me too, Flora)! What is the world
coming to in the 1990’s? I would hope this is
only a temporary fall in taste and the
Glaswegian will return to its rightful place,
not highlighting these ridiculous minority
groups who don’t deserve the time of day”.
Oh, Flora! You’re such a girl!
The world’s maddest agony aunt, the
Daily Record’s, Joan Burnie had a letter from
a married man who asked why his wife was
bringing home Playboy: “Why should a 45year-old woman develop an interest in other
women? She isn’t a lesbian...” Old Mother
Burnie confessed: “I am mystified as you are.
Perhaps it was just curiosity. Well, she’s
satisfied that now, so I don’t think you’re
being unreasonable if you ask her to stop
bringing them home”. Utter trot. Erotica is
good for you, and the campaign waged
against it in Britain is spurious, dishonest
and misguided. Go ahead and ignore the
Daily Record. Treat yourself: Touch, explore,
celebrate and enjoy the human body!
Old Mother Burnie was up in arms over
the Bishop of Edinburgh’s support for gay
marriages. It is “the prerogative of
heterosexuals”, she sniffed, while the Daily
Record’s editorial begged: “Has the Bishop
gone over the edge?”
Recent research into homosexuality in
animals gave the Daily Record the perfect
excuse to nail our lifestyle with language that
would have landed the editor with a costly
court case in most other European countries.
It reported “complaints” to the Scottish
Crofters’ Commission of rams chasing each
other instead of ewes without any
explanation of why or who was making the
complaints. It afforded the tabloid another
cheap laugh at our expense with its
derogatory heading: “Woolly woofters”.
What century are we living in? And isn’t
it astonishing in this day and age, Paisley MP
Gordon McMasters should be gassing
himself in his garage because of rumours
about him being gay? What’s the big deal
here? The Daily Record wrote that his
enemies “cast doubts on his sexuality...”
What, that Gordon was straight? Surely not!
The tabloid quickly nailed its poisonous
opinion to the post, accusing the New
Statesman of muddying the MP’s memory
for their allegations that Gordon McMasters
was gay. Thick as shit, as always, the Daily
Record’s editorial opined: “There are now
three openly gay Labour MP’s in the
Commons... So where’s the homophobia?”
The general manager of the Hamilton
Advertiser, Graham Leach was unmoved by
claims of the newspaper’s own
discriminatory policies. He repeated to me
over and over again that the reason gays
have been refused permission to advertise
for partners in its newspapers was “not
discrimination” but “commercial decisions”.
Excuse me? He was completely at odds with
his own advertising manager, Ian McQueen,
who, after telling me it was down to a
“shortage of space”, finally threw in the towel
to admit it was nothing less than blatant
“discrimination”. It’s funny how they are
never short of space when it comes to
printing the names and addresses of men
arrested seeking other means of finding
partners. Graham Leach finally confessed
that “there’s not a category within our paper”
for anyone falling outside of heterosexuality.
Not discrimination? What planet is this space
cadet on? Listen. When forthcoming
European legislation forces these dinosaurs
to take on board the issue of equality... bags
be the one to go back and rub their bigoted
noses in it.
You might remember the piece in the
Daily Star of Scotland that read: “Puff Off!
Queers want PINK Gay-verley”. The tabloid
doctored a picture of the Waverley to make it
look pink and printed a ridiculous claim that
“hello sailor gays asked ship bosses to bend
over backwards... and repaint the worldfamous Waverley PINK”. It was all over a
private booking by the respected AIDS
awareness group Phace West that led the
fuck-wits at the Star to wildly claim,
“hundreds of homos”, - described elsewhere
as “Rear Admirals” - were off on an “AIDS
awareness conference in RothesGAY”. The
management of the Waverley has now
refused Phace West a booking because of
“adverse publicity”. John Wilkes of Phace
West protested to David Duncanson of the
Waverley’s management committee claiming
he had “no concept of equal opportunities”.
With undertakings to apply equal
opportunities at Glasgow City Council, the
Waverley could be in danger of losing its
grant. John Wilkes says Duncanson is
“bewildered” over the ban and “wonders
what all the fuss is about”. He sounds the
type who just might read the Sunday Mail, in
which case he could have hardly missed its
front page: “RIOT ON THE CLYDE”. A police
helicopter shadowed the Waverley up the
Clyde where “40 police officers - some with
Alsatians - stood by... Four police vans and
an ambulance waited... Two groups staged a
pitched battle in one of the paddle steamer’s
bars as terrified daytrippers looked on in
shock... Trouble flared... as an argument over
football erupted into violence”. 10 men who
had been drinking heavily all day were
arrested. One passenger was quoted saying:
“It was a stupid fight caused by bigotry. They
were all shouting Rangers and Celtic chants”.
I trust the “adverse publicity” will prompt
David Duncanson to take the necessary steps
to ensure groups of straight men are not
permitted to book passage on board the
Waverley in future.
Gay Scout leaders made front-page
news in the Scottish Daily Mail. And from the
eyesore at Anderston’s Quay: “No doubt,
there will be new, pink badges in political
correctness”, Tom Brown whinged in the
hundred-odd-year-old Daily Record, on the
Scout Association’s decision “to accept the
likes of homosexuals and lesbians as leaders
of Scouts and Guides”. You could hear the
crunch of jackboots as the old croak’s mind
wandered down memory lane: “...We Boys’
Brigaders goose-stepped to our drill hall, we
always regarded the rival youth army as
‘cissies...’ none of that nonsense for your
decidedly butch Boys’ Brigade members. Our
uniform was... spit-and-polish boots, a belt
and sparkling buckle... In Kirkcaldy we were
so manly we refused to wear the pansy little
pillbox hat. Nothing nancy-boy there. And
DEFINITELY no hanky-panky in the welldrilled ranks - or out of them”. And that’s just
how Tom Brown likes it. Discreet. Hidden.
Brushed under the carpet to fester like a
rotting canker. But, of course, “no-one is
conducting an anti-gay witchunt”, he
squeaked. Oh, piss-off!
The Sunday Mail patched together some
comments from a motley crew of Church
cronies. Scotland’s top frock-wearing
Catholic, Cardinal Thomas Winning sneered:
“Homosexual Scout leaders could be
attracted to youngsters of the same sex”.
(Yes. Like priests). He reckoned
homosexuality was a “disorder in a person’s
make-up” and thought there was a “further
risk” of gays abusing young children. Of
course, the Sunday Mail said nothing to
contest his obnoxious lies.
A particularly salacious report was
passed to me from some tin-pot newspaper
calling itself the Dumfries and Galloway
Standard. “RID OUR PARK OF PERVERTS!”
its front page shrieked. “Visitors to...
(Castledykes Park) are being put off - thanks
to flashers and homosexuals”. A Dumfries
councillor, ex-copper, Tom Holmes wants to
ensure the matter is fairly debated, so “talks
are to be held between himself, police and
council officials”. He wants the installation of
CCTV cameras in an action “similar to those
carried out in Stirling...” the recording of all
cars “entering or leaving” the park; the public
reassured by police pro-activity; the
Procurator Fiscal to back the police when
reports are sent to them; the eventual closure
of the park ‘cottage’ and park users to be
encouraged to take down car registration
numbers and hand them to the police.
Apparently, messages constantly have to be
scrubbed off the walls “which the
homosexuals leave for each other”. Behind
his rhetoric are the young people he purports
to protect. Statistics show that most of us,
gay or straight have had our first sexual
experience between the ages of 14 and 16.
And the ‘cottage’ is where many young gays
go - heads often filled with romantic ideals,
armed with little or no sex education - in
search of a gay experience. It may not be
ideal, but hey, welcome to the real world!
Tom Holmes says in the Dumfries and
Galloway Standard: “Castledykes must be
protected by those in authority so that it can
be enjoyed by the public and made full use of
especially by children”. What? Like the 13year-old police monitored using a cottage in
Stirling by CCTV cameras during his school
holidays? That action resulted in 11 arrests,
three attempted suicides, two of which were
ultimately successful and the compounded
isolation of a gay teenager. It also brought
about the break-up of several families and
personal ruin of several useful members of a
community. The Stirling Observer played its
part by printing their names, full addresses
and pictures. The Raploch Estate’s ‘Big Mags’
Haney told BBC 1’s Frontline Scotland what
was coming next: “Up the Back Walk to
chase all the gays and prostitutes. If you’ve
got to do a clean-up campaign, you may as
well do it right”.
The overtly religious broadsheet, The
Herald were plucking their harp strings
before the general election. Its leader
reckoned the Church’s “...apparently
controversial interventions in politics are
actually of the greatest value to us all”. Oh,
yeah... says who?
Wester Hailes GP, Penny Watson made
some birthday cards containing - as the Daily
Record put it - “explicit advice on how to put
on condoms, birth control and sexual
diseases...” and posted them “to 14-yearolds”. (Actually, they were sent to their
parents. Sue the bastards, Penny)!
“Church leaders’ anger of GP’s condom
cards”, spat Scottish editions of The Express,
which used the story to hide a small halftone block with details of the more important
Government report. Those two ridiculous
caped crusaders, Wallace & Connelly were
wheeled in for the occasion. They were in
great demand. In the Daily Record, Father
Tom Connelly thought “people of that age are
not mature enough...” and Rev Bill Wallace of
the Church of Scotland’s self-styled ‘Board of
Social Responsibility’ preferred kids to be
taught “the value and importance of making
responsible moral decisions”. “Absurd...”
scorned Father Tom Connelly in The Herald
and “appalling” in the Scottish Daily Mail
which found Dr Watson “unrepentant”. In
The Herald, the Rev Wallace said: “I think it is
very short-sighted of her and quite wrong for
her to impose her amoral views on these
young people”. The pot calling the kettle
black, surely!
Readers of Scottish editions of The Sun
were left chewing their cud over Scottie
McClue reminiscing on an “innocent age”.
Scotland’s “worst teenage pregnancy record
in Europe” was blamed on “daft liberals”. Sex
education was “crazy”, he said. “Make their
life easier and tell them NOTHING about sex”.

Congratulations to Craig Ogilvie on his
article in ScotsGay Issue 132, ‘Sex. Dirty,
Dirty Sex’. Brilliant that he can be so
celebratory and enthusiastic about his
personal sexual and intimate enthusiasms.
Brilliant that he has achieved this sensual
freedom at a young age. If I met him I think I
would give him a hug and say, “Tell them all,
mate, tell them straight and make ‘em
listen!”
I grew up part of a generation that did
not have role models on TV and only a few
brave films such as “Victim” to inspire us.
And that title says it all. You had to be
optimistic then to believe that we would
achieve by now all that has been achieved.
After the partial decriminalisation of 1967 (in
England and Wales only, of course –
Scotland had to wait even for this till 1980),
all was not sweetness and light.
In 1975, a few of us formed the Wales
and West Gay Teachers’ Group. We
contacted people who might benefit from
our work not only through the (then slight)
gay press but through papers like the Times
Educational Supplement and the Education
Guardian. But we did this by sending letters
signed only in the name of the group, with a
covering letter with personal names. At this

time there was no automatic employment
protection if your employer took exception
to your sexuality. Teachers could be moved
or sacked, and teaching unions had at times
to mount strenuous defences. I recall one
teacher coming to a meeting from
Worcestershire but, as he told me later,
walking up to the door and then turning
round, getting back into his car and going
home. He could not face it. Probably, and
illogically, he feared that there may be
someone there who might “out” him. People
did, and some still do, have such fears.
Recently, a novel was published called,
“My Policeman,” by Bethan Roberts. Two
people narrate this book – the policeman’s
wife, and his older male lover. The wife is
writing quite recently, writing for her
husband’s lover, who is in his last days after
several strokes and whom she is nursing.
The lover writes a diary of his relationship
with his policeman, as it begins, in the
1950’s. The novel is very well researched,
and we see just how miserable gay life was
in that decade of purges, of the hole and
corner life lived – and of course many gay
men and lesbians then married for safety or an attempt at safety. The arrangement
could explode, and there is personal disaster
in the novel. I’m making it sound heavy – it
has humour and many fascinating
characters. But a marriage like the one in
this novel is never fair on the heterosexual
partner, and is a potential landmine. Read
this, and be reminded just how lucky we are
today, although we still have problems, and
there are those countries where things today
are worse than the 50’s here.
And, of course, people make hay
wherever they are. At the time that we
started the group I mentioned, the 70’s
scene was exploding around us, and there
were plenty of parties that I imagine Craig
Ogilvie may have revelled in. The law always
was an ass.
But while thinking it’s great that Craig
can live as fully, sensually and openly as he
wishes, and with pride – and may those who
mock him hide their faces in shame – it’s
good to remember how rare in human
history the gay freedoms we enjoy now are,
how recently things were different, to
imagine for a moment being a gay Ugandan,
and to keep fighting – especially for those
less privileged than ourselves.
