Current Scenario
•

•
•
•
•
Legacy interfaces X WAN competition
Remote sites: far from the provider´s backbone
Satellite Network (SATCOM)
WAN Networks: E1 and SATCOM. Starting w/ IP
Heterogeneous reality: regional solutions
SLA: WAN provider’s contracts with suitable
QoS targets are expensive and difficult to be met
in national scale
ATN-Br Guidelines
• Support Legacy and new ATM Applications
• Support for heterogeneous WAN Network
solutions with Integrated management
• Common IP based network (mid term)
• Technical Management Center support
• ATC Contingency Control Centers support
• Complex project / External consultancy
(R&D - CPqD & University – CETUC/PUC-Rio)

WAN routing (E1/MPLS/SATCOM)
Delay compensation and jitter management
Network management and control facilities
• EUROCAE WG-67 Standards
• Support ATM assets and WAN transitions
ATN-Br Trial Main Objectives
• Validate a technical solution model over a reduced
configuration/arquitecture.
• Verify climax operation over IP/MPLS WAN
• Protect investment by interfacing with legacy equipment
• Evaluate:
– capacity and efficiency of the MFI to manage 3 different WAN technologies (E1Terrestrial, Satcom and MPLS/IP)
– capacity of Brazilian WAN providers on the network requirements
– efficiency of priority-based traffic routing to implement a bandwidth flexible
without safety compromise
• Learn lessons to progress on the national ATN planning and
implementation
ATN-Br Trial Configuration
• Subset of ATS facilities
– CINDACTA II (ACC)
– DTCEA Florianópolis (APP)
– DTCEA Morro da Igreja (remote site)
• Subset of ATM services
– Voice for air-ground communication
(with climax/off-set-carrier)
– Radar
– PABX
– Data (intranet)

Trial Validation Tests
• FAT and SAT (MFI)
• Network SAT (*)
– E1
– Satcom data link
– MPLS
• Integration Test (*) with Legacy
• Systemic Test (*)
– WAN Networks Auto-routing
– Performance over any WAN Networks (emphasis in MPLS
Network)
– Flight test (climax)
(*) Tests performed with support of Fundação CPqD, an independent Brazilian telecom R&D
organization (http://www.cpqd.com.br)
Validations and Tools
•
WAN Network Tests: To assure the network
provides the desired performance in terms of QoS
– Throughput
– Latency, Jitter, Packet Loss
– Traffic prioritization
• Integration and Systemic Tests: To assure the
subsystems when integrated provide the
desired performance as a unit
–
–
–
–
QoS, Voice Quality
Bandwidth allocation, Services prioritization
Triple way routing
Dynamic delay compensation
• Tools: IxChariot, Abacus, Wireshark, Cascade
Pilot, NetPerSec
Routing Performance Test
• Routing performance tests based on VHF Radio Connections
– Successful tests of all automatic failover and re-routing options
MFI
Initial scenario
Radio connection between Cindacta II
and Florianópolis
MFI
MFI
Goal of the test case
•Verify automatic re-establishment of
connection on network outage
•Verify all routing options (E1, VSAT &
IP)
•Verify multihop routing
Climax Radio Operation Test
Speech quality verification over IP/MPLS,
E1/TDM and V.35/SATCOM
– Climax operational verification performed
using test flight (GEIV)
– Verify in practice the delay compensation
(over single and multiple WAN)
– Communications were operated from ACC
CINDACTA II in Curitiba using 135.85 MHz
Communications with the aeroplane
were kept at any time during the flight
over a total distance of 1248 NM
Main Results
• Interoperability with legacy equipment
• Safe routing and priority based traffic handling over
different networks
• Successful failover/routing tests over
heterogeneous WAN
• Radio climax operation over different WAN,
including VoIP over IP/MPLS WAN
Next Steps
•
•
•
•
Trial 2nd Phase: Complete digital integration.
Develop a transition plan (safe and practical)
Implement ATN-Br segment in one FIR
National level implementation
Conclusions
The Trial Project has demonstrated the
possibility to progress in the ATN-Br planning
and implementation in a larger scale.
