FINE AMERICAN & EUROPEAN PAINTINGS & SCULPTURE 6 DECEMBER 2009 LOT 113 JASPER FRANCIS CROPSEY (american 1823-1900) "AUTUMN ON THE HUDSON" Signed 'J.F. Cropsey' bottom left, oil on canvas 20 x 32 in. (50.8 x 81.3cm) provenance: Ben J. Selkirk & Sons Auction, St. Louis, Missouri, November 13-16, 1939, lot 325. Acquired at the above by Harold Z. Riley, Clayton, Missouri. By family descent. Private Collection, North Carolina. note: Kenneth W. Maddox of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation compares this work to a similar work, in the Foundation's collection entitled 'Hudson Highlands Sunset'. He believes both were painted between 1895-1900, and probably closer to 1900. 'Autumn On The Hudson' will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Jasper Francis Cropsey by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-On-Hudson, New York. Estimate $100,000-150,000 Oil on fabric mounted onto linen with wax-resin adhesive. The painting is signed at the lower left corner. There appears to be an illegible signature of inscription at the lower right. There is a repaired retouched complex tear at the center water visible under ultraviolet illumination. Other retouching, visible in UV light, appears in the sunburst and in the orange bushes and trees at left. The retouching in the bushes and trees appears dense relative to the aspect of surrounding paint. Overall the painting is in good stable condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. 1808 Chestnut Street Philadelphia PA 19103 | +1.215.563.9275 | info@freemansauction.com | www.freemansauction.com
