The YM-YWHA of Union County has been a home away
from home for countless thousands of individuals for more than
five generations, providing programs and services to an ever
changing community. We have grown since the early days of
serving the community in Elizabeth to include Eastern and
Northern Union County and parts of Essex. Now that we are a
beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater
MetroWest, that mission has expanded even further.
Providing services, activities and programs to the
community, as represented by the contents of this Program
Guide, is not an easy task. Costs are significantly in excess of
the fees that can reasonably be expected to be paid by our
members. In fact, only 50% are covered by your fees. Another
43% of these costs are covered through government contracts,
foundation grants and allocations from the Jewish Federation
and United Way. The last 7% must be raised through our three
main fundraising projects. We have kicked off the “Y” 2014
Annual Campaign with a goal of raising $100,000 and are
already a quarter of the way there. We hope to reach that goal
but this cannot happen without you. Our annual fundraising
efforts are rounded off by the “Y” Telephone Directory and
Raffle. In an effort to provide for the future, the ”Y” is proud to
have been selected to participate in “Create a Jewish Legacy”.
Please see our “Legacy” page in this brochure.
Your committed lay leadership and dedicated staff work
hard to provide the community with quality affordable child care,
summer camp, Jewish cultural programs, health and fitness
activities and programs for senior adults. We invite you to take
advantage of as much of these as you can and make your “Y”
your home away from home.
We wish you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous
New Year.

We are pleased to announced that thanks to a generous donation from
Allen and Stacy Kirshenbaum of Short Hills, the “Y” will be home to a satellite Israel
Center. The Israel Center office will be located on the first floor off the lobby. Our own “Y”
Shaliach will join in programs with our community and members can visit our Jewish
Heritage Library.
Stay tuned for more exciting developments regarding the Israel Center at the “Y”.
Serving the Jewish Community of Union County and the surrounding area for over 130
years through good times and bad, the “Y” has remained a “safe haven” for the
Community. The “Y” shines as a beacon acting as a second home for working parents,
single parents, a place for seniors, teens, the homebound and the unaffiliated.
The “Y” has a diverse population of members and a broad array of programs. We
provide childcare, camp, Jewish learning, after-school programs, health, fitness and
aquatics and Adult education and activities for senior adults.
Our commitment to strengthening Jewish Community education values is reflected in our
offerings. Programs such as a Jewish Film Series, Yiddish Vinkl, weekly Torah class led
by an area Rabbi, and celebratory programs for every Jewish holiday including a very
special Intergenerational Passover Seder reflect our Jewish identity.
Setting the “Y” apart from other Jewish agencies, we remain closed on Shabbat and Yom
Tovs. The “Y” is a Glatt Kosher facility with a Mashgiach on the premises. Our kitchen is
headquarters for the Union County Kosher Meals on Wheels program which delivers frail
homebound elderly clients a Kosher hot nutritious meal 5 days per week.
“Legacy Leaders” is a group of dedicated and committed individuals who want to
guarantee that the “Y” continues to provide the quality programs and services our Jewish
community deserves and has grown accustomed to. By becoming a Legacy Leader your
generosity will:
●
●
●
●
●
Ensure that “Y” membership is available to all regardless of ability to pay
Provide daily hot Kosher meals for Senior Adults
Continue to keep Jewish Summer Camp affordable
Help ensure that we sustain safe and affordable childcare
Make a difference in the lives of others for many years to come
The “Y” is honored to participate in this important program. Won’t you take some time to
think about your legacy to the “Y” and the Jewish community. Become a “Legacy Leader”
and help us carry on with our mission of serving the Jewish community.
