At Saddleback College, we prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions as well as enter many career pathways that are in high demand such as first responders, nurses, chefs and automotive technicians, among others. Unfortunately, many of these students are forced to work part time or even full time jobs just to afford to stay in college. Although over 11,000 of Saddleback’s students are receiving financial aid which represents over 40 percent of all our students, more than a third of them are left with an average unmet need in excess of $6,500 a year. This equates to over $25 million in unmet need for our students each year. In order to help bridge this significant gap in student aid, Saddleback College Foundation partners with friends like you from our diverse community of donors including industry leaders, businesses, community organizations, alumni, faculty, staff and students to provide critical philanthropic support. We couldn’t do this without you and we are so grateful for your ongoing support. As you read through the Foundation’s annual report, we hope you feel a sense of pride in knowing that your contribution has made a significant difference in hundreds of students’ abilities to work toward their dreams. One of the past year’s highlights was receiving a $1 million endowment gift— the second largest single gift in our history—from Sue and Bill Gross to establish the Sue and Bill Gross Scholars for Jobs Endowment. The Grosses have been generous supporters of our students for a number of years and established this endowment to provide scholarships to outstanding Career and Technical Education students with an unmet financial need. We are extremely grateful to the Grosses for continuing a legacy of support that will impact students year after year. We received 3,500 gifts this year to fund scholarships and endowments for students studying in majors from the sciences to the arts. This year’s revenue and gifts in kind giving totaled $3.2 million—a 26 percent increase over the previous year and net assets reached over $11 million this year—an increase of 9 percent. Each dollar received helps the college educate and train the workforce of today and tomorrow as well as provide valuable social and cultural programs and services for the community. Top to Bottom: Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President, Saddleback College. Anthony Ferry, President, Board of Governors, Saddleback College Foundation On behalf of Saddleback College and Saddleback College Foundation, thank you for your generous, ongoing support. We hope you enjoy reading about the successes of this past year. We’d also like to extend a special message of appreciation to outgoing Board of Governors President Michael S. Hamilton for his leadership and many priceless contributions to Saddleback and our students. Sincerely, Dr. Tod A. Burnett President, Saddleback College Anthony Ferry President, Board of Governors Saddleback College Foundation 3 FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS IN GRATITUDE Y our gifts help provide current and future generations of students with the knowledge and skills to help them succeed and keep our community healthy and prosperous. Excerpts from thank you letters written by some of our scholarship recipients capture the life-changing impact of a gift of education. “There are not enough words to convey my appreciation and gratitude to you. I am honored, humbled, and forever grateful for your kindness and generosity. I hope to someday do something similar for another struggling student. As a nurse, I will continue to volunteer and give so others may receive the same blessings afforded to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” — Sue and Bill Gross Technical Education Scholars Program recipient 6 4 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 “I truly loved meeting some of your members and donors both during my interview and at the award ceremony. I promise you have made a good choice investing in my education. I will keep studying and working hard. With your financial gift, I will get even further. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” — Saddleback Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship recipient “This scholarship will help me to finish my fourth and final semester as a nursing student. I cannot thank you enough for your incredible generosity.” — Gillian Marie Sabet Memorial Endowed Scholarship recipient “The award not only gives financial support for my continued education, but it also evokes profound encouragement with which to face the rigors I will surely encounter in the coming years. I must say my utmost thanks for this honor and award.” — Harold Friedemann Chemistry Scholarship. S addleback College Foundation supports Saddleback College and its students by raising funds for scholarships and other programs. The Foundation is committed to increasing student success and enhancing the excellent education offered by Saddleback College. Guided by a group of dedicated community leaders who advocate for the college, the Foundation strives to make higher education attainable for all in south Orange County. In the past year, the Foundation received 3,500 individual gifts totaling $3.2 million including a $1 million endowment from Sue and Bill Gross, awarded 517 scholarships to hard working students that represented $793,719 in scholarship donations, increased net assets by over one million dollars and raised over $100,000 in net proceeds from the Gala. Each year the event is a wonderful way to recognize the hundreds of donors who invest in the success of our students. During the ceremony, outgoing Foundation Board of Governors President Michael S. Hamilton read a letter of gratitude from a scholarship recipient, “Your money is helping me follow my dreams of becoming an executive chef and I truly appreciate the help you are giving me. Living on my own in Orange County is hard and I would not be able to keep going in school without your help.” The recipients of the Gross scholarships primarily assist students in Career Technical Education (CTE) programs such as automotive technology, cinema/TV radio, medical assistant, and nursing. CTE programs (typically two years) open opportunities for students to secure living wage jobs. Dr. Tod A. Burnett, Saddleback College President, expressed his gratitude to the donors who were in attendance and congratulated the scholarship recipients. He also spoke about the challenges community colleges face as a whole in the U.S. where total philanthropic giving to higher education institutions is about $477 billion each year, but only around 1% of this amount is raised for community colleges. He said that this was the primary reason why Sue and Bill Gross started the Sue and Bill Gross Technical Education Scholarship program at Saddleback two years ago. The Grosses gave a $500,000 gift to set up a pilot program to fund annual scholarships for career technical education students in the ‘forgotten middle’. The student recipients couldn’t qualify for full state and federal financial aid, but still had a great financial need and probably would not be able to attend college without the extra financial support. The pilot program has already helped over 150 students continue their studies. “Because of the Sue and Bill Gross “Because of the program’s success, it is my pleasure to announce that this past December, the Grosses donated an additional $1 million to start an endowment which will provide scholarships to Saddleback students in perpetuity,” said Dr. Burnett. “We are grateful to Sue and Bill Gross for their deep concern and generosity,” Technical Education Scholarship program success, it is my pleasure to announce that this past December, the Grosses donated an additional $1 million to start an endowment which will provide scholarships to Saddleback students in perpetuity. We are grateful to Sue and Bill Gross for their deep concern and generosity.” — Dr. Tod A. Burnett 4 6 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 www.saddleback.edu/foundation 9 7 SCHOLARSHIP DONOR OF THE YEAR TUTTLE-CLICK AUTOMOTIVE GROUP S addleback College presented the 2016 Scholarship Donor of the Year award to the Tuttle -Click Automotive Group. Since 2008, the Tuttle-Click Automotive Scholarship has awarded $100,000 to many deserving automotive technology students. Each recipient receives a starter tool kit valued at $4,500, scholarship support of $3,000 toward earning their automotive technology certificate, and a valuable career opportunity at a TuttleClick dealership when they graduate. TuttleClick has made the dreams of so many students a reality, and Saddleback is very appreciative of their contributions and kindness for the past 8 years. 10 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 8 STUDENTS RECEIVING SCHOLARSHIPS 2009-2016 550 500 517 450 449 400 405 350 300 326 250 234 200 150 164 189 176 100 50 0 09 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 2009-2016 $800,000 $700,000 $721,519 $732,950 $793,719 $600,000 $500,000 $509,790 $400,000 $300,000 $200,000 $100,000 $0 $338,700 $264,427 $215,195 $232,412 09 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 9 SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT GREG ZABORSKI • RECIPIENT OF THE RICHARD EUGENE QUIRK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP & DISABLED VETERAN SCHOLARSHIP G reg Zaborski didn’t take the traditional path to college. In fact, at age of 18 with little success as a high school student, he didn’t even see himself attending college. Instead he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Infantry and joined the one percent of the one percent. Life as a marine proved to be very tough, but adjusting to civilian life after his honorable discharge and finding his sense of purpose proved even more daunting. Greg decided to enroll at Saddleback as a re-entry student: “My G.P.A. was at a solid 0.00 and everyday felt like a struggle. After such a poor showing in high school, becoming an engineering student with advanced calculus, physics and other crazy subjects, seemed impossible. Right off the bat, I realized that if I wanted this bad enough, I would have to reach out for help. Saddleback laid the platform to do just that. It was the amazing staff and faculty here that propelled me to a place I never thought I would be.” “If it wasn’t for all of you, I wouldn’t be where I am at today. For the first time since the military I felt like someone had my back. I hope that through this story you come to understand the meaning behind my words when I say thank you.” — Greg Zaborski Saddleback’s Bridge to Engineering program provided Greg with the path he had been seeking. And a leadership opportunity as the Director of the Saddleback Veterans Student Council gave him valuable mentorship, a sense of belonging and the reassurance that he wasn’t alone in his journey. As the scholarship ceremony, Greg announced that he will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall to study mechanical engineering, and he expressed his gratitude to the donors, faculty and staff who generously invested in his education: “If it wasn’t for all of you, I wouldn’t be where I am at today. For the first time since the military I felt like someone had my back. I hope that through this story you come to understand the meaning behind my words when I say thank you.” 10 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 12 SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT NICOLE HUDDLESTON • RECIPIENT OF THE LINDA RICHARDSON RICE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP & DONALD R. ZIMBALIST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP W hen first generation college student Nicole Huddleston found out that she received a scholarship, she was humbled by the thought that someone she didn’t even know would invest in her education. “This support has helped me get where I am today and I am so grateful,” she says. Nicole credits her ‘extraordinary and dedicated professors’ for teaching her how to dream big. “What I found at Saddleback was an overwhelming number of staff and professors who work tirelessly in dedication to their students,” she continues. “This is something that is unique and extraordinary and it makes Saddleback great. There was an abundance of support to accomplish my goals and a push to attempt great things.” In the course of her education at Saddleback, Nicole had an opportunity to study abroad in Spain and through that experience, her vision for her future changed: “It allowed me to see my future in a completely different light.” Nicole took part in Saddleback’s Honors Program that provides support and mentorship for students who are pursuing transfer to a four-year university. She applied for admission to seven prestigious four-year universities in California and was subsequently offered admission into each one: “There are no words to describe the feeling and hope that that gave me. I need to thank the incredible faculty at Saddleback who pour themselves into their students and also invest financially in scholarships. I cannot thank you enough. I was accepted at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UC Santa Barbara, UCSD, USC and the University of San Francisco. I’ve decided that my future lies with Berkeley to study Comparative Literature and my goal is to become a college professor. Part of my heart will always stay at Saddleback.” “What I found at Saddleback was an overwhelming number of staff and professors who work tirelessly in dedication to their students.” — Nicole Huddleston 11 SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT TANYA VILLEGAS • RECIPIENT OF THE SUE AND BILL GROSS TECHNICAL EDUCATION SCHOLARS PROGRAM T anya Villegas received her bachelor’s degree in business in 2004, but regretted that she didn’t choose nursing instead. About five years ago, she made the decision to go back to school and chose Saddleback because it offered a class called “Beginning Nursing Concepts” to help students transition into the nurse role. Although Tanya worked part time, her income wasn’t enough to cover the financial aspect of a family and the costs of school. Fortunately she received a Sue and Bill Gross Technical Education Scholars Program Scholarship in fall of 2014. This scholarship enabled her to cover some of the extra costs that being in the nursing program entailed such as a second car, extra gas, and books. “There are not enough words to express my gratitude to Sue and Bill Gross,” she says. “It’s never too late to go back to school, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, and if you look, you can find people and opportunities that will support your pursuits. I am so glad that I did because now I have a degree in nursing, 18 years after I started my first degree.” “It’s never too late to go back to school, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, and if you look, you can find people and opportunities that will support your pursuits.” — Tanya Villegas 12 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 16th ANNUAL GALA RAISES RECORD FUNDS Dr. Linda and Ron Lifur-Benett M ore than 450 guests attended the 16th Annual Saddleback College Foundation Gala at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa on March 12, 2016. This year’s gala was our most successful yet. Thanks to the generosity of prominent members of the community including business leaders, elected officials and college leadership in attendance, over $100,000 was raised in net proceeds, which was $25,000 more than the previous year. The annual gala is an important way for our community to come together to invest in student success. The evening featured several inspiring student speakers, the Alumna of the Year award presentation, silent and live auctions and a “raise the paddle” appeal for student scholarships. Guests enjoyed performances by Saddleback’s own Commercial Music Ensemble conducted by Dr. Ariel Alexander and the Jazz Combo conducted by Joey Sellers and were entertained by mentalist magician Jim Eggold. Each year, Gala proceeds fund scholarships and other college programs and services that support students. Thanks to the event’s philanthropic support, students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford the cost of attending college are given opportunities to realize their educational and career aspirations. Dr. Tod A. Burnett thanked the guests for their support of the gala: “There’s no more important investment than investing in the future of our youth. Your presence tonight is a wonderful testament to how much our community cares for Saddleback.” Foundation Board of Governors President Mike Hamilton also recognized the top sponsors of the event and led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday to one of Saddleback College’s oldest students. Sculptor Hyam Fink turned 99 years “young” the night of the Gala. Hyam has been a loyal student of the arts at Saddleback for many years and donated several of his pieces to the silent auction. 13 “There’s no more important investment than investing in the future of our youth. M ichelle Desilets took her first class at Saddleback when she was still in high school and it turned out to be so fascinating, that it ended up influencing the course of her life. The class was Physical Anthropology and she was particularly interested in the study of the great apes, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. Michelle went on to study a variety of subjects at Saddleback College in 1984 and 1985, focusing mostly on Liberal Arts and transferred to Dominican University in San Rafael, California in fall 1985, where she ultimately earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in English Literature. She then earned her teaching certificate at California State University, Long Beach. During these years, she traveled extensively in many parts of the world, including Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. It was on one of these trips that she visited and orangutan rescue center and it changed her life. In late 1997, she and a fellow volunteer decided to open a primate rescue center in Central Borneo which is now the world’s largest such facility. In 2002, Michelle founded the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation UK. As Executive Director, she initiated campaigns to stem the illegal trade of orangutans, repatriate known smuggled orangutans, and support sustainable palm oil. 18 Foundation Annual Report 2015-16 In 2009, Michelle founded the Orangutan Land Trust, whose mission is to provide solutions for the longterm survival of the orangutan in the wild, by ensuring safe areas of forest. The focus is on protecting critical areas of orangutan habitat as well as the release of the hundreds of rescued orangutans currently in rescue centers. In addition to her charity work, Michelle has served as a consultant to international film crews, including those from BBC, PBS and Animal Planet, for such series as Orangutan Island and Orangutan Diary. She is currently advising on a new film project undertaken for ITV (UK) and PBS. In recent years, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation was honored by the BBC Wildlife Trust as one of the top ten UK charities working to save wildlife globally, and was featured in a series called Saving Planet Earth. “Securing safe forest habitat is the single most important thing we can do to save the orangutan from extinction.” — Michelle Desilets Please visit www.forests4orangutans.org to learn more about her important work.
