to the Congress party, a leading contractor on
Wednesday filed an FIR against Sonia Gandhi over
non payment of dues. According to initial reports, the
FIR was lodged by Heather Constructions Managing
Partner in Kerala.
The other leaders who have been named in the
FIR include Rajiv Gandhii Institute of Development
Studies Chairman Ramesh Chennithala, former Kerala
chief minister Oommen Chandy and Kerala Pradesh
Congress Committee president VM Sudheeran.
Importantly, the project to build the Rajiv Gandhi
Institute of Development Studies was commissioned
by former KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala.
Meanwhile, reports say that Islamic State (IS), the
world’s deadliest terror group, is reported to have tried
hard but failed to make its presence felt in India.
And now, the IS is reported to have changed its
tactics and is believed to be co-ordinating with regional
terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) to carry
out attacks in India. An alert issued by the Intelligence
Bureau, says, ‘ISIS is desperate to make its presence
felt in India and for this purpose is trying to co-ordinate
with LeT to outsource some of its operations.’
The alert further says the IS would plan and supervise
the entire operation while it would be executed by the
LeT, which already has a presence in India.

Downpour lashes many parts of city More predicted in next 24 hours
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 8:
Chennaiites woke up to cloudy skies
for the third consecutive day as rains
and thundershowers continued to
lash the city. And there is more in
store, say officials.
After recording 30 mm of rain on
Monday, the capital city recorded 4 mm
of downpour on Tuesday evening in
less than an hour. Thunderclouds had
developed late evening and rain started
around 8 pm that continued till 4 am.
According to Met officials, weather
conditions still remain favourable for
rain and thundershowers to continue
over the city during the next 24 hours.
They said the wet spell can be
attributed to the presence of two
cyclonic circulations on either sides
of Peninsular India. ‘A circulation is

Dornier mishap...
S BEN RAJA
Chennai, June 8:
8 June 2015. It was on this day
the Coast Guard’s Dornier Aircraft
crashed into the Bay of Bengal near
Chidambaram. Flying at about 9000
feet from Chennai on a routine mission, on the fairly well-lit evening,
the flight CG791 disappeared from
the tracking radars at 9:24 pm. After
weeks of intense search, only the
remains of the aircraft and the three
officers in it were found.
A year after the ghastly mishap, a
higher official of Coast Guard, speaking to News Today, reiterates the
strict safety standards followed. ‘We
will strive hard to make sure that such
incidents don’t happen in the near future. As of now everything is fine and
streamlined. We learnt lessons from
our past experiences and we assure
that we will do our best in future.’
On this day, let us remember the
brave officers, who died while on
duty for the country, he adds. The last
recorded position of the plane was

was to return to Chennai at 10 pm.
ICG’s Board of Inquiry report, prepared by its Regional Headquarters,
stated, ‘The cause of crash is a device
known as Attitude and Heading Reference Unit. That is said to be the single
biggest aid to a crew flying at night over
sea, which ranks among the toughest
forms of flying given the absence of
any reference points for the pilots.
That unit tells the pilots how the plane
is performing, if the controls are being
fully followed or there is a lacunae.’
The aircraft was being flown by Deputy
Commandant Vidyasagar and had on
board Deputy Commandant MK Soni,
the co-pilot, and Navigator Deputy Commandant Subash. Hailing from Nanganallur, Subash was survived by his wife
Deepa Lakshmi and a son.

Monsoon strikes, claims one life
Monsoon today hit Kerala with heavy rains claiming the life of a 36-year-old
man following a landslip in Idukki district.
South-west monsoon has set in over Kerala and Lakshadweep, said
K Santosh, head of India Meteorological Department’s regional centre.
Several parts of the State have been receiving heavy rains since last night.
The IMD had earlier said that monsoon was likely to hit Kerala on 9 June.
Jobi John, former SFI Idukki district president, died and his mother was
seriously injured when mounds of earth and rocks fell on their home following
heavy rains at Vazhavara early today, police said.
Due to rough weather, waves hit walls of houses at Pattinapakkam.

NT Bureau
Chennai, June 8:
Seven luxury cars were stolen from
an automobile company godown at
Manapakkam early this morning. The
police jumped into immediate action
and retrieved all the stolen vehicles.
According to sources, a gang of
unidentified persons targeted the
godown maintained by Hyundai here.
They gagged up the security guard,
Manoharan (40) and escaped with
seven cars at around 4 am.
After Manoharan raised an alarm, locals who rushed to the spot, freed him
and informed the Nandambakkam
police. A case was subsequently
registered and a search for the stolen
cars was conducted.
Based on information, the police
managed to trace the cars to Valsaravakkam, following which the officers
reached the location and recovered
the vehicles.
However, there has been no information on the gang, said sources,
and added that a hunt is on to nab
the culprits.

q Airport officials did their duty, says maestro
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 8:
The news of Maestro Ilayaraja allegedly insulted at Bangalore airport for
carrying prasadam during a security
check by officials recently angered
his fans. Social media was flooded
with comments condemning the officials. However Ilayaraja chose to
put an end to the issue by coming
out with a clarification.
Speaking to a news channel, Ilayaraja, said that the incident was
no big deal, and that he was only
asked to open the prasadam packet
and show, which he did. He further
asked why Indians bother themselves
with such issues, and said that he
has come past far more offensive
instances in his life.
‘They have come from a different
State, having left their kids. They
could also be irritated with their
tough jobs - they have to be on time,
cannot have food on time. They do
not know who is who’, he said.
According to Karthikraja, Ilayaraja’s
elder son, ‘They had reached Bangalore from Mangaluru and was about
to board a flight
to Chennai. Even
before checking
the baggage, we
informed security
men that we were
carrying the temple prasadam, including a coconut.
The coconut was
broken into two, but that did not stop
the security men, who were checking
it with a hand-held bomb detection
machine’.
The prasadam was earlier cleared
by the security personnel on duty at
Mangaluru airport and there were no
unpleasant scenes there, he said.
However, noticing the security
check on CCTV camera, a senior
officer came and apologised.

Temperatures are expected to remain between a minimum of 27 and
a maximum of 35 degree Celsius.
The sudden thunder showers last
night left certain areas in the city water

roads such as GST Road, Anna Salai
and Nungambakkam High Road.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 8:
In what is likely to cause a major embarrassment to the Congress party,
a leading contractor
today filed an FIR

Heather Constructions Managing

FIR include Rajiv Gandhi Institute
of Development Studies Chairman
Ramesh Chennithala, former Kerala
chief minister Oommen Chandy and
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee
president VM Sudheeran.
In his complaint, the Heather
Constructions Managing Partner
Rajeev alleged that he was given
a contract for building the Rajiv
Gandhi Institute of Development
Studies in Thiruvananthapuram.
However, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) now says
that it has no money for project, he
further alleged.
Experts blame doctor, not treatment
‘Hair transplantation can’t be faulted, infection may have killed medico'
M BALASUBRAMANI
Chennai, June 8:
‘I always wanted to do hair transplantation, but now, after the death of
the medico, I am dropping that plan
and have decided to stay bald and
alive,’ says Srinivasan, a youngster.
Such is the fear that has been created in the minds of people after the
death of a final-year medical college
student, who died a day after undergoing a hair transplant surgery at a
salon in Nungambakkam.
While the cause of death is speculated to be because of anaphylaxis,
a strong allergic reaction which can
been triggered by anaesthesia, a few
doctors say that hair transplantation is
completely safe and the death might
have been caused by infection due to
non-sterilisation of instruments.
Talking to News Today, plastic surgeon, Dr Karthik, said anaesthesia is
short-lived and it could not have definitely led to the death of the student,
certainly not after a day.
‘I personally feel that this tragedy
could have been averted if clean
surgical equipment and proper antibiotics had been used before and after
the surgery respectively,’ he said.
Karthik added that different bodies react differently to anaesthetics
and the surgeon should know how
to handle them. ‘Cosmetic surgery
is not a joke and cannot be done
anywhere, at any time. Proper hospital credentials are needed for it.
Consultation can be done anywhere
Why docs should advertise
Before going to a doctor, the credentials should be verified. But with the
ban on doctors advertising being in place, this could be a tough task. Now
one can directly ask the doctor to show the medical council certificate. The
medical council is also trying to make things easy by giving certified boards
to doctors which should be displayed in the reception.
But plastic surgeon, Dr Karthik, suggests a better way. He says the advertisement should be vetted by the Medical Council of India. This could
then be released to the media, he says.
but the surgery should definitely be
done in a hospital environment with
ICU facility,’ he said.
Tamilnadu Medical Coun-
cil executive committee member
P Balakrishnan said the credentials of
the doctor should be checked before
undertaking treatment. ‘Just because
someone offers to do the surgery at
low cost people should not be carried away and end up in the wrong
place. Even in many beauty parlours,
people use local anaesthesia so that
the customers don’t have to endure
more pain while waxing or removing
a pimple. All this should be screened
and monitored,’ he said.

first and
foremost whether the
actress is short or tall,
plump or voluptuous - getting ready means the friend has
to wait for hours.
There is a reason for this: The women reach the top in terms of finance
as they are paid a few thousands
per episode and for the professional
power of crying for hours together.
Despite all their other accomplishments, like wearing crimson red
or parrot green sarees, 4-5 bindis
on their forehead, the women are
acutely concerned as they think they
will be judged by their appearance on
the occasion. So, most TV actresses
take 30-40 minutes getting ready.
But if that is a shopping trip, make

The new media offers a great

Yoga Day
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 8:
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has asked TV and
radio channels to carry special
programmes to promote the second
International Yoga Day on 21 June.
In a letter to all broadcasters, the
Ministry said that on 11 December,
2014 the UN General Assembly had
declared celebrating 21 June as the
International Yoga Day (IYD) every
year.
Earlier Prime Minister Narendra
Modi had given a call for the adoption
of 21 June as the IYD, it added.
‘The forthcoming 21 June will be the
second IYD and hence, it will hold
special significance for India, particularly when the genesis of practice of
Yoga is associated with our country
and several initiatives have been
taken by institutions, both public and
private, to promote the cause,’ the
Ministry said.
To take the same forward, it asked
all TV channels, FM stations and
community radio stations to take
all possible steps this year also
to promote IYD carrying special
features or in any other befi tting
manner during the period leading
cleaning up the pond and organised
a ‘Pallikaranai Lotus Pond Clean-up’
programme in 2014.
Chennai Corporation officials said
though the cleaning up work started
in 2013-14, it was only in the past few
months that work picked up.
The renovated pond gets added
features like a yoga stage, concrete
seats, a pebble footpath, tower clock,
music systems and two play areas
for kids. The green cover has been
strengthened by around 150 herbs
like Tulsi and Cactus.
Councillor (Ward 189), C Rengan
said, ‘People from the surroundings
have started to come in large numbers to enjoy the ambience of the

Retired TNEB engineer K R

medical college, explains the pros
and cons of the fitness apps. He said,
‘If you’re looking for home fitness,
then apps may not be of much use
without some guidance in the form
of videos to start with. But, again,
the problem is one doesn’t know if
the posture and techniques are right
which can have dangerous results.’
He insists that posture is important
when it comes to weightlifting or
yoga. For instance, he said, weightlifting involves so many techniques
like how a person squats and how
one shouldn’t put more weight on
his knees. The same applies to yoga
that one should be conscious about
when they do aasanas. One should
have someone to assist them when
trying indoor fitness regime, else it
can cause grievous injuries.
He also recommends a few outdoor apps for running - like counts
to 5k, counts to 10k - which he had
used to good benefit. He said, ’I
have an app as a coach... when I
work out, it analyses my BP and
other details with technical tools. It’s
always better to have a coach who
doesn’t run with you. You will also
know what’s your progress.’
Dr Kumar suggests that one can
rely on fitness apps when they
have worked under a coach for few
months and are sure about the work
out techniques - otherwise it is not
advisable. ‘Someone has to assist
you. But, in an app there’s no interaction. Unless and until there’s an
interactive app, this is not possible,’
he concluded.

Taking a serious view of the 6 June

protest against amendments to existing rules under the Advocates Act,
Bar Council of India today instructed
the State Bar Council to initiate action
against those responsible.
Blaming the Bar leaders for not
putting forth their views at meetings

opposed to certain rules framed by
High Court. If the advocates had any
grievances, they could have

President Barack Obama backing India’s bid for membership
of the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) amid a major push
to the strategic ties between the two countries which finalised a
roadmap to give India the status of US’ close partner in the defence
sector deserves applause. Obama held over hour-long talks with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washongton. The good thing
is that Obama promised to cooperate with India against terrorist
threats from groups such as Pakistan-based Jaish-e Mohammad, LeT
as well as ‘D’ Company, a reference to underworld don Dawood
Ibrahim. The two leaders directed their officials to identify specific
new areas of collaboration at the next meeting of US - India Counter
terrorism Joint Working Group. The Joint Statement issued after the
talks between the two leadesr shows the good work of the Indian
government. .
The American side committed itself to treating Pathankot attack
at par with 26/11 terror strike in terms of ensuring punishment to
perpetrators based in Pakistan. The two countries also decided to
start work on construction of six American nuclear reactors in India
amid affirmation that the Liability issue has been addressed. Six
pacts, including one on exchange of screening of terror information,
besides two other documents were signed after the talks that mainly
covered issues like terrorism, clean energy, climate change, defence,
regional security, cyber security, economic ties and people-to-people
contacts.
Obama further said it was natural for India and the US, two biggest
democracies, to deepen and broaden partnership. Progress made
in the Civil Nuclear agreement was among the issues discussed. I
indicated support to India being a part of NSG, the US President
said in remarks which assume significance since China is opposing
such a move. Obama underlined that India needs technology, which
is critical for its progress and prosperity. Modi’s successful mission
to USA has enthused many.

Google’s app converts
live photos into images
Google has introduced a new app
called Motion Stills
for iOS users. The
app allows users to
turn their Live Photos
into stabilised gif images. The company
has surprisingly not
released the app’s
counterpart on Android.
The app allows you to
enhance Live Photos and
make non-shaky, easy-toshare gif images. Gif images
today are used generously while chatting on instant messenger apps and
sharing on social media, and Motion
Stills aims to create personalised gif
images for users. Additionally, it also
brings the ability to stitch gif images
together and make an entire movie
clip.
Live Photos taken from the handheld smartphone can be shaky and
stuttery. Google claims that the Motion Stills app comes with advanced
stabilisation and rendering technology
that will smoothens the video, and the
end result is a seamless GIF.
Of course, Google asserts that this
app requires Live Photos, and hence it
will only work on the latest iPhone 6s,
iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. Live
Photos was introduced only last year,
and has been a part
of its smartphones
since.
However, iPhone
users can just download third party apps
like LiveMaker, Fyuse, DSCO, and
many more that are
available in the App
Store, that create animated photos. The Motion Stills app automatically collates all the Live Photos
on the iPhone and shows them inside
the app. There’s an option to see the
unstabilised original live photo, and
the stabilised one that the app creates to really know the difference. It
allows you to share it in the form of
a gif image to any instant messaging
app. We tried it on Facebook Messenger and it worked seamlessly. For
all those instant messaging apps that
still do not support gif images, Motion
Stills gives an option to share the Live
Photos as a video clip as well.
There is no word on availability for
Android users, but the Research blog
does claim that it intends to integrate
the feature into existing products like
Google Photos, based on the feedback it receives. The Motion Stills
app can be downloaded from the App
Store for free.

WASHINGTON:
Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination after
decisive victories in the New Jersey

Police in Papua New Guinea opened

Students have been locked in a

Witnesses said the clashes broke

students prepared to march from

where O’Neill was due to face a no

It’s about who we are as Americans.
And it is an argument we must win,’
Hillary said.
In most of the polls, Hillary is leading

reducing every passing day. Hillary
said the Republican candidate would
take America back ‘back to a time
when opportunity and dignity were
reserved for some, not all.’
‘He’s not just trying to build a wall
between America and Mexico, he’s
trying to wall off Americans from each
other,’ she alleged.
‘When Donald Trump says a distinguished judge born in Indiana can’t
do his job because of his Mexican
heritage, or he mocks a reporter with

goes against everything we stand for
because we want an America where
Hillary Clinton
everyone is treated with respect and
their work is valued,’ Hillary said.
‘It’s clear that Donald Trump does
not believe we’re stronger together,’
Hillary continued.
‘He has abused his primary opponents and their families, attacked
the press for asking tough questions,
denigrated Muslims and immigrants.
He wants to win by stoking fear and
rubbing salt in wounds and reminding us daily just how great he is. We
believe we should lift each other up,
not tear each other down,’ she said.
Hillary said she would reach out to
Sanders and his supporters to unite
the party. She now faces Donald
Trump, the Republican presidential
candidate, in the November general
elections. Sanders said he would
consult his supporters about how to
move forward if Obama endorses
Hillary.
US names India as
‘major defence partner’
WASHINGTON:
The US has recognised India as
a ‘major defence partner’, a significant development which paves the
way for the country to be treated
at par with America’s closest allies for defence related trade and
technology
transfer.
‘Noting that the US-India defence
relationship can be an anchor of
stability and given the increasingly strengthened cooperation in
defence, the United States hereby
recognises India as a Major Defence Partner,’ said a joint statement issued after Prime Minister
Narendra Modi held talks with US
President Barack Obama.
According to the statement, un-
der the ‘Major Defence Partner’
recognition, the US will continue to
work toward facilitating technology
sharing with India to a level commensurate with that of its closest
allies and partners.
Meanwhile, the White House also
said that the meeting between
President Obama and Prime Minister Modi resulted in progress on
finalising some key defence agreements between India and the US.
‘I can tell you that there was
important progress on finalising
agreements relating to defence
logistics, sharing of maritime
information, and even the movement of US aircraft carriers in the
region,’ White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told report-
C
ers at his daily news conference.
The joint statement said, ‘the
leaders reached an understanding
under which India would receive
license-free access to a wide range
of dual-use technologies in conjunction with steps that India has committed to take to advance its export
control objectives.’
In support of India’s ‘Make In India’
initiative and to support the development of robust defence industries
and their integration into the global
supply chain, the statement said
the US will continue to facilitate the
export of goods and technologies,
consistent with US law, for projects,
programmes and joint ventures in
support of official US-India defence
cooperation.

The current meeting is a great platform for both India and the US to sort
out their difference and strengthen the bilateral tie-ups.
Also these two countries must take urgent steps and think of united strategies in order to tackle the menace of terrorism that has long been posing

Bashar al-Assad
WASHINGTON:
Syria’s president promised to retake
‘every inch’ of the country from his
foes in a defiant speech that appeared to reject the humanitarian
relief effort and peaceful transition of
power that the United States, Russia
and more than a dozen other nations
have pressed for since last fall.
The speech by President Bashar
al-Assad was his first major address
since the effort to mediate an end to the civil war
broke down in Geneva in
April. It reflected his sense
that Russian intervention
in the war has bolstered
his position and his ability
to remain in power for the
NEWS MAKER f o r e s e e of the day
able future
as the war
enters its sixth year.
Assad’s defiance was
notable partly because of
efforts in recent months by Secretary
of State John Kerry and other leaders
of a 17-nation collaboration, known
as the International Syria Support
Group, to set a series of deadlines
and limits that Syria could not violate.
Every one of the directives has
been broken. A cease-fire devised
in Munich in February collapsed.
Kerry’s demand at that time that
humanitarian access had to begin
within weeks was briefly observed in
a few towns before access was again
largely blocked.
‘The speech was, unfortunately,
vintage Assad unrepentant and damaging to international efforts to end
the brutal civil war that has ravaged
the country for more than five years
the same international efforts that
his principal backers, Russia and
Iran, support,’ Mark C. Toner, a
State Department spokesman, said
in a statement on Tuesday night.
‘His remarks show once again how
delusional, detached and unfit he is
to lead the Syrian people.’
Toner argued that Syria was defying
not just Kerry, but also its two most
vital allies, Russia and Iran.
Kerry was in Beijing and, because
of the time difference, could not be
reached for his reaction to Assad’s
speech, Toner said.
Three weeks ago in Vienna, Kerry
appeared before reporters to declare that if Assad continued to
obstruct humanitarian convoys, the
West would help the United Nations
relief agency conduct airdrops of
supplies to starving towns, beginning 1 June. The deadline passed
with little comment by Kerry or
the State Department. It remains
unclear when those airdrops will
commence, if at all.
At the same Vienna conference,
Kerry rejected the notion that President Obama and other allies would
not use force to stop the Syrian government’s indiscriminate bombings
or enforce humanitarian access.
‘If President Assad has come to
a conclusion there’s no Plan B,’
he said, ‘then he’s come to a conclusion that is totally without any
foundation whatsoever and even
dangerous.’

Washington, June 8 (PTI):
India and the US on Tuesday announced the setting up of two financial assistance programmes worth
$60 million for supporting India’s
much-needed clean energy initiatives
including in solar power and other
renewables.
‘The United States is committed to
bring to bear its technical capacity,
resources and private sector, and
is jointly launching with India new
efforts, to spur greater investment
in India’s renewable energy sector,
including efforts that can serve as a
model for other ISA Member Countries’, the White House said.
An announcement in this regard
came after the meeting between
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
US President Barack Obama in the
Oval Office.
This includes a creation of a $20 million US-India Clean Energy Finance
(USICEF) initiative, equally supported
by the United States and India. This
is expected to mobilise up to $400
million to provide clean and renewable electricity to up to one million
households by 2020.
The White House said India and
the US committed themselves to
establish the US-India Clean Energy
Hub as the coordinating mechanism
to focus United States government’s
efforts, in partnership with leading
Indian financial institutions, to increase renewable energy investment
in India.
The two leaders also agreed on a
$40 million US-India Catalytic Solar
Finance Programme, which would
be equally supported by the United
States and India.
This the White House officials said
would provide much needed liquidity
to smaller-scale renewable energy
investments, particularly in poorer,
rural villages that are not connected
to the grid, and could mobilise up to
$1 billion of projects.
This would help in expansion of
handholding support to Indian utilities that are scaling up rooftop solar
and continuation of successful cooperation with USAID on ‘Greening the

Dormant rates,
disappointed industry
India Inc feels cut would have helped restore investment cycle
NT Bureau / PTI
New Delhi, June 8:
Disappointed with the RBI’s decision
to leave policy rates unchanged, India
Inc on Tuesday said a rate cut would
have helped restore the investment
cycle as the industry continues to
battle a slump in demand.
Experts said a future rate cut would
depend on the inflation trajectory, behaviour of monsoon and global factors.
‘At this time when credit demand is still
flat and industry is facing a demand
crunch, a rate cut would have done
much to restore the investment cycle.
CII is hopeful that RBI will resume the
rate cutting cycle and support growth
impulses in the economy in the next
monetary policy’, its director general
Chandrajit Banerjee said.
Anand Natarajan, head (strategy and
business execution), Fullerton India
Credit Company Limited, said, ‘The Re-
‘Any reversal in CPI trajectory led by good monsoon,
improvement in transmission and the effect of the US Federal
Reserve policy meet on the USD/Rupee will guide future
measures from RBI’
serve Bank of India’s stance on holding
policy rates was expected. Inflationary
pressures have increased, and external vulnerabilities continue to loom.
Against this context, the statement of
an accommodative monetary policy
comes as a welcome reassurance. A
more immediate priority is an improved
transmission of the rate decreases thus
far: this, as much as the monsoons is
vital for further economic growth’.
‘This has lowered the chance for
any reduction in interest rate in the
medium term. Any reversal in CPI
trajectory led by good monsoon, improvement in transmission and the ef-
fect of the US Federal Reserve policy
meet on the USD/Rupee will guide
future measures from RBI’, the head
(research) at Geojit BNP Paribas
Financial Services, Vinod Nair, said.
‘The timing of the next rate cut
would take a cue from whether a
well-distributed monsoon in 2016
dampens inflationary concerns, the
pace of improvement in transmission and the extent of volatility post
any major geo-political events such
as the Brexit’, ICRA MD and Group
CEO Naresh Takkar said. ‘It appears
that the uncertainties on the global
horizon with Fed policy overhang
and UK Brexit vote tipped RBI’s decision in favour of a status quo. With
its accommodative stance still in
place, I now see high probability
of a rate cut in August by at least
50 bps’, YES Bank MD and CEO
Rana Kapoor said.
By choosing to retain the benchmark
policy interest rate at 6.5 per cent, the
RBI has not given any surprise to the
industry since the central bank wants
to wait and see the impact of Monsoon along with certain global factors
such as rising commodity prices on
inflation, ASSOCHAM president Sunil
Kanoria said.

Indian Rupee is the top outperformer
among the Asian currencies, Japanese brokerage firm Nomura said on
Tuesday. Here is more on this:
Craig Chan, head of Asia FX
research at Nomura, listed Rupee,
Indonesia’s Rupiah and Malaysia’s
Ringgit with scope to outperform
among Asian currencies from now till
end of this year, supported by strong
macro fundamentals.
‘From the macro side, these
three currencies are supported by
some of the strongest fundamentals’,
said Chan at the annual Nomura
Investment Asia Forum 2016 being
held here from 7-9 June.
India has a basic balance surplus. Current account deficit plus net
Foreign Direct Investment provides
surplus, according to Chan.
The Rupee is 3.7 per cent undervalued on trade related basis, he
pointed out.
All three currencies are undervalued and have adequate reserves
support, Chan said.
Chan also observed that there
has been ‘no strong evidence thus
far that these countries’ central banks
have been buying US dollars aggressively and accumulating reserves’.

South Africa roared back into contention in the Tri-Nation One-Day International series with a 47-run victory
over Australia in the third match of the

The ICC commended Brendon McCullum two years ago - and continues

India books
berth in Asian
Cup Qualifiers
Guwahati, June 8 (PTI):
Striker Jeje Lalpekhlua scored
twice as India recovered from a
one-goal deficit to thrash Laos
6-1 in one of the biggest ever wins
and book a berth in the 2019 AFC
Asian Cup football Qualifiers here.
India trailed 0-1 in the 16th
minute through a Khonesavanh
Sihavong strike but the home side
replied in a remarkable fashion
as they dominated all through
the remaining part of the match,
pumping in six goals -- including
three in seven minutes -- to walk
away with an easy win.
Jeje Lalpekhlua (42nd and 74th
minute), Sumeet Passi (45th),
Sandesh Jhingan (49th), Mohd.
Rafique (83rd) and debutant Fulganco Cardozo (87th) were the
goal-getters for India in the second
leg of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers play-off match at the Indira
Gandhi Athletics Stadium.
India won the home and away tie
7-1 on aggregate to book a berth
in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.
They had beaten Laos 1-0 in the
first leg in Vientiane on June 2.
This was one of the biggest ever
wins for India.
They had to play in the play-offs
after finishing at the bottom of their
group in the joint preliminary round
of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and
2019 AFC Asian Cup.
The victory and a berth in the
Asian Cup Qualifiers will ease a
lot of pressure on coach Stephen
Constantine whose future has
been under a scanner after a
string of poor shows by the national team.
India took some time to settle
down in the match played under
slippery conditions and Laos were
the better side in the initial 15
minutes. The visiting side created
problems for the Indian defence
from the right flank in this period.
India paid the price of relying on

himself unmarked inside the box

Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh

New Delhi, June 8 (PTI):
Scores of Councillors from BJPruled MCDs led by three Mayors
today staged a protest outside Delhi
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s
residence, demanding clearance
of their pending dues by the AAP
government.
During the protest, BJP Councillors raised slogans against
the Kejriwal Government and
slammed it for calling a two-day
special session of Delhi Assembly to discuss the working of civic
bodies, saying the move is only
intended to ‘defame’ the Municipal Corporations.
Councillors and mayors alleged
that the city government has
not implemented the report of
Fourth Finance Commission so
far following which all the BJPcontrolled civic bodies are facing
a fund crunch.
During the protest, the police
tried to pacify the Councillors
and three Mayors, but they did
not relent. Thereafter, police
detained them and brought them
to the nearest police station
where they were released after
sometime.
To express their protest against
the government’s decision to call

INDIA’S FIRST BULLET

q Maharashtra govt not ready to

Mumbai, June 8:
India’s first bullet train project
between Ahmedabad and Mumbai
appears to have hit a roadblock,
and that too a major one.
As per a report in a newspaper,
the Maharashtra government has
told the Indian Railways that it
would not allow the most crucial
station of the Rs 98,000-crore
project ‘Mumbai’ to be built at the
proposed site.
The Railways is set to construct
the Mumbai station underground at
the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC),
which is a central business district.
The plan to construct the Mumbai
station at BKC was prepared by
Japanese consultants, who had
done a thorough research before

now reported to have told

the fact that the bullet train station would be underground, the

Officials from the Railway Ministry

the matter would now be taken to
the Prime Minister’s Office where
a solution could be found or a

India and other developing countries often complain that rich nations

its entrepreneurship, technological

It's possible to hold LS,
State polls together: EC
New Delhi, June 8:
The Election Commission (EC) has
indicated to the government that
holding of elections to Parliament
and all State Legislative Assemblies
simultaneously was possible.
As per a report in a daily, the EC
has supported the idea of holding the
polls together, in a letter to the Union
Law Ministry dispatched last month.
It is for the first time that the poll
panel has officially said it could
conduct Lok Sabha and state polls
together.
Even Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is in favour of holding all polls
together to save cost and time.
In March, at a meeting of the

said that the polls to panchayats,
urban local bodies, states and Parliament should be held simultaneously.

The Law Ministry had sought from
the EC its views on the 79th Report

Four Indians in
Forbes’
new
list
q SBI, ICICI Bank chiefs among most powerful women
New York, June 8 (PTI):
Four Indian women, including SBI
Managing director Arundhati Bhattacharya and ICICI Bank Managing
director Chanda Kochhar, are in the
new list of Forbes’ world’s 100 most
powerful women who are building
billion-dollar brands and calling the
shots in the financial markets.
The Forbes ‘100 Most Powerful Women’ in the world list 2016,
topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, includes PepsiCo Chief
Indra Nooyi, Biocon Founder Kiran
Mazumdar-Shaw and HT Media
head Shobhana Bhartia.
Forbes said this year’s most powerful women are the ‘smartest and
toughest female business leaders,
entrepreneurs, investors, scientists,
philanthropists and CEOs making
their mark in the world today’.
‘They’re women who are building
billion-dollar brands, calling the
shots in the financial markets, and
crisscrossing the globe to broker international agreements and provide
aid,’ the magazine said.
Bhattacharya, 60, ranked 25th on
the list, is facing her ‘most challenging test’ yet with State Bank of India
Arundhati Bhattacharya
Chanda Kochhar
facing mounting bad loans, which
stood at $11 billion in December,
Forbes said.
Kochhar comes in on the 40th
spot and Forbes said as boss of the
country’s largest private-sector lender,
Kochhar, 54 has to contend with the
‘current bane of India’s banking system: bad loans.’ In a bid to retain female staff, Kochhar launched ‘iWork@
home’, which allows employees to
work from home for a year.
Mazumdar-Shaw is ranked 77th on
the list. The 63-year old ‘self-made’
business leader positioned Biocon
as a large player in insulin and her
company is the only Asian firm ranked
among the top 20 biotech employers
worldwide by Science magazine.
Bhartia is ranked 93rd on the list
and the 59-year-old media baroness
serves as chairperson and editorial
Indra Nooyi
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
director for India’s largest listed media company, HT Media.
Nooyi is ranked 14th on the list and
Forbes said in May 2016, she successfully sidestepped a proxy war
with activist investor Nelson Peltz’s
Trian Fund, which had pressured
the company to split, by adding
another board member. The list also
includes Democratic presidential
candidate
Hillary Clinton on the second spot,
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen
(3), Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg (7), US First Lady Michelle
Obama (13), Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi (26), Queen
Elizabeth II (29), Bangladesh Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina (36), Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari
(52) and UNESCO Director General
Irina Bokova (89).

WHO IS MORE HAPPY PRODUCER VISHNU OR
ACTOR VISHNU?
A:
:
It was a big risk taken by the
producer in me. Frankly the actor
Vishnu Vishal never wanted
to become a producer. But he
always had the desire to break
the shackles of restricted image
that he had. When Ezhil sir
narrated the story to me, I had no
second thoughts. I know that a
comedy entertainer will never do
a mistake.
Keeping faith in his credntials, I
agreed not just to play the lead
but also produce the same. I
would say the movie’s success
has brought joy to the actor in
me, while the producer has learnt
a lot. Now people know that I
can be part of such light-hearted
commercial fare with dance, song
and comedy that commands an
opening.
emember Madonna Sebastain of Premam fame acted as Vijay Sethupathi’s
heroine in Kadhalum Kadandhu
Pogum (KaKaPo), directed by Nalan Kumarasamy. The movie went on to become a huge
hit. The big news is that the two are coming
together again for another film, to be directed
by K V Anand. Interestingly actor-director T Rajendher dons an important character in the film.
Says K V Anand, ‘Vijay Sethupathi is a
Chennai-based guy, who works in a corporate setup. He meets T Rajendher, an agent
for corporate companies, at his workplace.
The combination scenes between the two
will definitely satisfy the expectations of the
audience. The film will go on the floors from
the first week of July’.
Hip Hop Adhi will compose the music for
the film. Abi Nandan who has worked as
assistant cameraman in Ko, and has done
cinematography for Malayalam films like
Amen and Double Barrel, has been roped
as the cinematographer for this project.
The movie would be produced by AGS

Speaking to News Today, Vishnu Vishal, says, ‘This has been my
