The Association is governed by a Board of Directors elected by a majority of the delegates present at the annual meeting. The Association's Board of Directors is made up of up to twenty-one (21) members representing voting members in good standing of the NGA. If there are qualified candidates available, consideration is given to provide reasonable geographic representation to all parts of the State of Nebraska. At times when the full Board of Directors is not meeting, the Association is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of the President, Vice President, the chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee, the chairman of the Membership Committee, and the immediate Past-President of the NGA. The Executive Director is a ex-officio member of the Executive Committee. 2016 NGA Media Guide 7 What does the NGA do? Among the duties of the Association include the conduct of the state's amateur golf championships, governing of its member clubs, and serving as the handicapping and course rating authority for its member clubs and members. The Nebraska Golf Association conducts the Nebraska Amateur Championship, Nebraska Match Play Championship, Nebraska Four-Ball Championship, Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship, Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship and Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship. On the junior level, championships include the Nebraska Junior Amateur, Nebraska Junior Match Play, Nebraska Girl's Amateur, Nebraska Girl's Match Play and Nebraska Little Junior Amateur. Select team events include the Directors Cup Matches and the KansasNebraska Junior Cup. The NGA also conducts national qualifiers for USGA championships and works in conjunction with the Nebraska Section of the PGA to conduct the Nebraska Cup Matches, as well as present the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. The Nebraska Golf Association also provides its member clubs with USGA Course Ratings; serves as a source for resolving questions regarding the Rules of Golf, USGA Handicapping, and Amateur Status; holds educational seminars on the GHIN handicap service, Rules of Golf, and USGA Procedures and Handicapping. The NGA also advises its member clubs about the process of conducting golf tournaments and serves as a clearinghouse for member tournaments to help avoid scheduling conflicts. Financial support is given to other Nebraska golf organizations that help make golf better in Nebraska as well. The Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association, the Nebraska Section of the PGA and the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame all receive financial assistance from the NGA. By working directly with the United States Golf Association, the Nebraska Golf Association provides its member clubs with the latest in technological equipment, including the GHIN Handicapping System and Tournament Pairing Program and instructs the clubs on how to use the programs. The NGA also supports the USGA by conducting local qualifiers for national amateur championships and providing volunteers to serve on national committees. 2016 NGA Media Guide 8 The NGA Turns 50 The Nebraska Golf Association has been around in one form or another since the first Nebraska Amateur was conducted in 1905. The amateur association conducted the championship into the 1950s, but eventually handed the tournament over to the Nebraska PGA. The pros conducted the championship for over a decade, but began to struggle with obtaining host sites. In addition, golf in the state of Nebraska needed some structure. That’s when Bob Fraser and his friends stepped in. On November 11, 1966, the Omahan Fraser led a meeting at Lincoln Country Club. In that meeting, the Nebraska Amateur Golf Association became an official entity. Fraser was voted president with Lincoln’s Larry Romjue his vice president. Omaha’s Don Stern was named secretary-treasurer, and other elected board members included Howard McCollister of Omaha, Tom Ludwick of Lincoln, P.M. Anderson of Lincoln, Del Ryder of Grand Island, Don Bridge of Norfolk and Al Blessing of Hastings. Fraser, a three-time Nebraska Amateur Champion, and the board of directors were tasked with two objectives; give the Amateur a ‘shot in the arm’ and accentuate junior golf. It didn’t take long for the board to accomplish the first big step toward either objective. In its first attempt at conducting the Amateur, the Association locked down a premier site and crowned a great champion. Omaha Country Club played host to what would be Bob Astleford’s eighth and final Nebraska Amateur title. It was also his sixth straight. Both are records for the Amateur. Astleford did it in spectacular fashion too. Just a couple years earlier, he had completed an incredible comeback from seven strokes back in the final round to win the 1965 title in a play-off over Matt Taber of Lincoln. In 1967, it was almost inevitable. Despite being six strokes back to start the final round, with a host of contenders in his way, Astleford leaped the field and finished in a tie with Lincoln’s Charlie Borner. Astleford went on to win his title on the first play-off hole. The following year, 1968, was a big one for the Association. The Nebraska Junior Amateur was introduced and initially won by Omaha’s Bob Swahn at Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln. The championship began as a combination of match play and stroke play, with 32 players competing in a match play bracket until only eight players were remaining. The format then switched to stroke play, as the top eight players played 36-holes to crown the champion. Also in 1968, the Association brought back the match play format at the major level, introducing the Nebraska Match Play Championship. The Nebraska Amateur began as a match play tournament in 1905 and continued in the format until the first stroke play only championship in 1956. The Nebraska Match Play started with just the top 16 finishers from the previous year’s Amateur. Lincoln’s Tim Bateman defeated Norfolk’s Don Bridge, 4 and 3, to win the first title. The bracket was eventually expanded to 32 in 1972, with qualifying held for the additional 16 spots. Del Ryder eventually took over as Executive Director and served in that role till 1988. The Association progressed significantly under the guidance of Ryder. In 1973, the Ryder announced a state-wide handicapping system, to be included in membership of the Association. A few years later, Ryder arranged for golf courses in Nebraska to be “rated” for the first time. Under a system developed by the United States Golf Association, ratings were conducted by a team from the University of Minnesota. In 1988, the Association entered a new era, as former Lincoln Journal Star Sports Editor Virgil Parker took the reins 2016 NGA Media Guide 9 The NGA Turns 50 from Ryder as the Executive Director. Under Parker the Association continued to grow in numbers and scope, adding several championships along the way. Under Parker, long known as the Nebraska Amateur Golf Association (NAGA), the “Amateur” was dropped from the moniker, becoming the NGA as it is known today. The Inaugural Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship was conducted in 1990 at Ashland Country Club, and won by Kearney’s Chad Lydiatt. In 1999, the Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship and the Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship were conducted for the first time. Beatrice Country Club hosted the championships in conjunction, with Lincoln’s Bob Hughett winning the senior title and Friend’s David Clouse winning the mid-amateur title. Parker served as Executive Director until he passed away in 2001. Craig Ames, who started as a USGA P.J. Boatwright Intern with the NGA in 1997, took over as Executive Director in 2001 and continues to serve in that role today. Under Ames, the Association has continued to grow its championship schedule, while also adding other competitive outlets for players of all ages and skill levels. Junior golf is still a main priority of the Association, and juniors in the state now have an unmatched amount of opportunities to learn, play, and compete. Today the Nebraska Golf Association upholds the traditions of conducting state championships, now totaling 11, while also conducting qualifying for eight USGA Championships. In addition, the NGA presents three select team events, an Interclub program, Fall Junior Series and an Intercollegiate Tournament. On the junior golf side, the NGA’s FORE! program began in 2012 and has given thousands of juniors a chance to play golf for just $4 per round. In a partnership with the Nebraska PGA Section, the NGA presents the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour, which offers over 70 competitive events for juniors of all ages, experience and skill levels. The two organizations also conduct the state’s Drive, Chip and Putt qualifiers, giving juniors a chance to make it to Augusta National Golf Club. The NGA presently has around 23,000 individual members and more than 160 member clubs, and is the Handicapping, Course Rating and Rules of Golf and Amateur Status authority in the state. Among other benefits, Individual members of the NGA receive a USGA Handicap Index as part of their membership, while member clubs are provided with the USGA’s GHIN products, and Course Rating services free of charge. Through the support of those members and member clubs, the NGA has strengthened the game of golf in Nebraska, and will continue to do so for many years to come. 2016 NGA Media Guide Presidents of the NGA Robert G. DeSajevic was poised to make a move, as he made birdie on No. ines was just a step behind after a 68 (-3), while Nietfeldt 12 and No. 13 presented a birdie opportunity. Unfortunately, capped the group with a 69 (-2). Sajevic hit his tee shot out-of-bounds and had to save bogey with four good shots. Deines and Nietfeldt also bogeyed “It was nerve-wracking, I haven’t been in that position for a though. while, I haven’t played a lot of competitive golf,” Deines said. “But playing with Ryan Nietfeldt and Andy Sajevic kind of Sajevic had good looks at birdie on No. 14, 16 and 17, but the makes you focus a little bit more, not that you need it in putts wouldn’t drop. The three were the only players to break par in the first round, and would again be paired together for the final round the following day. Deines seemed even more comfortable in the role to start the final round, as he birdied two of his first three holes to overtake the lead. It was nearly three straight birdies, as his attempt on the par-3 second hole hung on the lip and would not drop. “I didn’t really know what to expect, like I said, I haven’t played a lot of competitive golf,” Deines said about his hot start to the final round. “That kind of calmed me down a little bit, that was big.” Deines rolled in a birdie on No. 1 to tie Sajevic at 4-under. “It’s pretty cool,” Deines said of his win. “It’s tough to win these things, the golf just gets better, the guys are getting better, they’re younger … it’s really fun, it’s humbling to beat all these guys and I’m really honored to be the champion.” Deines finished with a 1-under 70 for a 138 (-4) total, three strokes ahead of Sajevic (74) and Nietfeldt (72) at 141 (-1). Andy’s father, John Sajevic, finished in fourth place at 143 (+1), while Lincoln’s Travis Minzel, the 2010 and 2011 Champion, rounded out the top 5 at 144 (+2). 2016 NGA Media Guide 2015 Championship Notes Leaders: Round 1 - Andy Sajevic, at 67 (-4), by one stroke over Jon Deines (68). Notes: In his first year as a Mid-Amateur, Andy Sajevic of Kearney (formerly of Fremont) took the first round lead on the course he grew up on. Sajevic (67) played alongside his closest two competitors, Jon Deines of Omaha (68) and Ryan Nietfeldt of Elkhorn (69). Deines, the 2005 Nebraska Match Play Champion, recently returned to competition after hiatus, and didn’t take long to get back into the winner’s circle. 122 2016 NGA Media Guide 123 17th Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship Results September 19-20, 2015 Fremont Golf Club Par: 35-36 - 71, Yardage 6,532 | Entries: 71 Pos Player Name 1 T2 T2 4 5 T6 T6 8 T9 T9 T9 T9 T13 T13 T13 T16 T16 18 T19 T19 T21 T21 T21 T21 T25 T25 T27 T27 T27 T27 T27 T27 T33 T33 T33 T36 T36 38 39 T40 T40 42 Jon Deines, Omaha, NE Ryan Nietfeldt, Elkhorn, NE Andy Sajevic, Kearney, NE John Sajevic, Fremont, NE Travis Minzel, Lincoln, NE John Sutko, Elkhorn, NE Patrick Tryon, Lincoln, NE Scott Tridle, Lincoln, NE Ryan Knispel, Omaha, NE Jordan Reinertson, Gibbon, NE Matthew Trammell, Hickman, NE Bill Amundsen, Omaha, NE Patrick Hanzel, Lincoln, NE David Easley, Lincoln, NE Greg Sohl, Wahoo, NE Matt Carsey, Omaha, NE Nathan Anderson, Oakland, NE Stan Darling, Fremont, NE Jay Moore, Lincoln, NE Danny Jenkins, Lincoln, NE Chris Rager, South Sioux City, NE Wesley Bernt, Kearney , NE Brian Csipkes, Gretna, NE Tyler Kirkholm, Homer, NE Dave Shillinglaw, Bellevue, NE Trent Morrison, Omaha, NE Steve Buroker, Bennington, NE Jayson Brueggemann, Lincoln, NE Jacob Godwin, Omaha, NE Cole Grandfield, Omaha, NE Geoff Oliphant, Omaha, NE Glenn Bills, Omaha, NE Skip Gist, Omaha, NE Mike Root, Omaha, NE Kurt Ohlrich, Omaha, NE Will Andersen, Dakota City, NE Philip Maiyo, Lincoln, NE Murray Krambeer, Bellevue, NE Joey Baldwin, Wayne, NE Jeff Epstein, Omaha, NE Jason Eggers, Omaha, NE Jacob Hemelstrand, Bellevue, NE Rounds Overall 1 -4 -1 -1 +1 +2 +3 +3 +4 +6 +6 +6 +6 +7 +7 +7 +8 +8 +9 +10 +10 +11 +11 +11 +11 +12 +12 +13 +13 +13 +13 +13 +13 +14 +14 +14 +15 +15 +16 +17 +18 +18 +19 68 69 67 71 71 72 75 75 73 73 73 71 71 76 77 75 73 75 74 72 75 74 76 79 78 78 79 73 76 78 84 77 72 75 76 79 79 82 84 80 85 74 2 Total Score 70 72 74 72 73 73 70 71 75 75 75 77 78 73 72 75 77 76 78 80 78 79 77 74 76 76 76 82 79 77 71 78 84 81 80 78 78 76 75 80 75 87 138 141 141 143 144 145 145 146 148 148 148 148 149 149 149 150 150 151 152 152 153 153 153 153 154 154 155 155 155 155 155 155 156 156 156 157 157 158 159 160 160 161 2016 NGA Media Guide 124 17th Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship Results Pos Player Name 43 T44 T44 T44 T44 48 49 50 T51 T51 53 54 55 56 57 T58 T58 T58 T61 T61 T61 64 65 66 67 68 69 70 71 Rick Dusek, Omaha, NE Tony Caputo, Omaha, NE David Baker, Omaha, NE Scott Leak, Omaha, NE Andy Rager, Omaha, NE JB Wills, Papillion, NE Bob Tatten, Omaha, NE Marcus Bell, Bellevue, NE Richard Orth, Omaha, NE Travis Harris, Elkhorn, NE Dale Savington, Papillion, NE Jeff McPherson, Omaha, NE Jason Niemi, Bellevue, NE Joshua Jordan, Lincoln, NE Ryan Smith, Grand Island, NE Bryan Slone, Omaha, NE Matthew Clements, Bennington, NE Todd Muehlich, Wahoo, NE Vince Nigro, Omaha, Nebraska Ken Wray, Omaha, NE Henry Henk, Bellevue, Ne Jeff Houdek, Beatrice, NE Justin Rolfes, Omaha, NE Bob Nowaczyk, Omaha, NE Vince Takacs, Papillion, NE Matt McCann, Papillion, NE Matt Waszak, Papillion, NE Don Rea, Bellevue, NE Rob Bartness, Omaha, NE Rounds Overall 1 +22 +23 +23 +23 +23 +24 +25 +26 +28 +28 +30 +32 +36 +38 +39 +40 +40 +40 +42 +42 +42 +44 +45 +46 +47 +54 +57 +63 WD 82 82 86 85 86 80 83 82 84 84 83 89 91 84 95 92 90 96 92 100 93 98 97 87 93 94 100 102 86 2 82 83 79 80 79 86 84 86 86 86 89 85 87 96 86 90 92 86 92 84 91 88 90 101 96 102 99 103 WD Total Score 164 165 165 165 165 166 167 168 170 170 172 174 178 180 181 182 182 182 184 184 184 186 187 188 189 196 199 205 WD 2016 NGA Media Guide 2016 Championship Preview Coming soon... 125 2016 NGA Media Guide 126 Championship Results: 1999-2015 Year Name Hometown Site 2015 Jon Deines Omaha Fremont Golf Club 2014 Trent Morrison Omaha Beatrice Country Club 2013 Ryan Nietfeldt Omaha Beatrice Country Club 2012 Patrick Duffy Omaha Beatrice Country Club 2011 Travis Minzel Lincoln Fremont Golf Club, Fremont 2010 Travis Minzel Lincoln Platteview Country Club, Bellevue 2009 Mike Vanier Lincoln Yankee Hill Country Club, Lincoln 2008 David Ping * (Match Play) Omaha The Players Club, Omaha 2007 John Williams Omaha Ironwood Golf & Country Club, Omaha (Rain Shortened to 18 holes) 2006 J.J.
