FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN
EVENTS
On behalf of the BOM congratulations to Claire
(Competition Director), the Competition Committee,
athletes, officials, coaches and water safety personnel
in the way you represented Sorrento through ALL the
senior state title events.
Thanks to Leanne, Mike, DJ Jeff, Krystal and all the
volunteer staff that assisted with the after states function
held on Sunday evening, your assistance was greatly
appreciated.
President’s Marathon:
The gun goes at 9.00am this Saturday morning for the
President’s Marathon. Registration is from 8.30am with a
briefing at 8.45am, it would be great to see as many
club members either competing or supporting the
event. The full course will consist of approx. 6 x 300mt
swims with a total of around 2klm of either hard or soft
sand beach running.
(A shortened course subject to requests).
A complimentary well-earned bacon and egg burger
and orange juice awaits post the event.
WANTED – NEW VEHICLE - CAN YOU ASSIST?
It is the clubs goal to have a new vehicle by the
beginning of the next patrolling season. The current
vehicle has done a great job, but unfortunately on its
last legs. A new Ford Ranger ute or similar would be
nice!
This is a call to members that work in the motor industry
and may be in a position to assist.
My email address is president@sorrentoslsc.org.au if you
can help.
A club as one is a club of strength!

BOATS NEWS – Peter Watkins and Grant Gannon
The State Titles have been completed with good results in the boat arena.
- Men’s Reserves Crew: Round 1 - 3rd, Round 2 - 2nd, Round 3 - 4th and Semi-final - 4th
Crew members: Luke, Sam, Scott, Jarrod and Sweep Grant.
- Ladies Crew did not compete.
Conditions were very difficult for all crews and our men's crew performed very well to reach the
Semi-finals. Well done to you all!
Fundraising for Boats:
The Boat Crew are collecting aluminum cans and old car batteries as a
fundraiser, please contact Watto on 0419 471 470 if you can help.
(Watto will come and collect your goods)
Yours in Boats,
Watto
The weekend saw the end of the season competition with the States run over Saturday and
Sunday. The conditions were challenging and the Open Women’s crew decided to withdraw
after breaking a sweep oar during
the warm-ups on Saturday. The
Open Men’s Reserve crew went
into the day carrying some injuries
but did well to get a third and a
second in the two rounds run after
the Lifesaver Relay. In the relay our
boys gave the team a creditable
start, coming in 13 seconds behind
the first crew, placing us third at the first change.
On Sunday the conditions proved more challenging as the swell picked up and the southerly
breeze strengthened. The men’s crew rowed a fourth place in the third round giving them a place
in the semi-final. In the semi we just missed out on third place which would have secured a place
in the final. Bodies were sore and fatigued, but anyone there would have appreciated the skill
and guts shown by the guys to avoid the spills and carnage that befell so many other crews on
the day.
Jarod, Scott, Sam and Luke deserve a big pat on the back for performing so well all season in the
W.A. Series, the Navy Series, the Beko Sunset Sprints and the W.A. Masters (with Mick in for Sammy,
getting a silver medal in their age group). As their sweep I know the look of pain in their eyes
through the long hours of training and competing. They have achieved miracles and it needs to
be acknowledged, if I don’t tell the story you won’t appreciate all the hours and sacrifice that has
been endured to get the club recognised in the boat arena this season, WELL DONE BOYS! Thanks
for a season to be proud of.
Thanks, Grant

LIFESAVING NEWS – Garry Bunford
Big Thanks to Adam Mack who collected the Red ATV from SLSWA!! Thank you for your help, also
thanks to everyone who called to offer their help.
Five weeks, that's all that remains of the 2014/15 season. With patrols, Senior State Championships
done and Aussies still to come it’s a busy time at Sorrento. It’s great to see so many members
attending their allocated patrol. Many members have assisted with performing additional patrols
water safety and all must be congratulated for their commitment to Sorrento and keeping the
community safe.
You may think the 2015/16 season is a long way off. That couldn't be any further from the truth. The
winter months at Sorrento are extremely busy and the Lifesaving team is already planning the
season ahead. With the possibility of changes to next seasons patrol's I ask all members to take
note of any changes that may affect them. Keeping the beach safe is every surf lifesavers number
one priority and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank every patrolling member for their time,
commitment and support during the 2014/15 season.
The future of Sorrento, our nippers experienced a weekend of ups and downs at Scarborough
Beach. Testing conditions and a reduced program due to the possibility of inclement weather
could have caused problems for our youngest members, I'm glad to say it didn't. Our nippers
stood tall and took every challenge head on, this is exactly what our nippers, parents, coaches,
supporters and age group managers did during the championships. The commitment and support
they all showed is the underlying reason why our nippers dominated and are 3rd in 2014/15 State
Champions. Congratulations.
The success of Sorrento on and off the beach is solely due to the commitment and effort of so
many members. If you patrol, compete, train our lifesavers, or cook the food on a Sunday morning
you are all a vital link in the Sorrento machine. Thank you for your efforts during the 2014/15
season, I look forward to seeing you on the beach in the coming weeks and the season ahead.
CLUB SERVICE NEWS – Leanne Lewis
It was wonderful to see such a great turn out for the Junior Awards night, and congratulations to
all juniors. To the ones who won medals and the guys and girls who didn’t you are all champions
for being part of the Surf Lifesaving movement. Thank you to all parents who helped make this
night a brilliant one.
2015 Senior States! Another fantastic Sorrento weekend, competing down at Scarborough.
Well done to all our athletes, coaches, officials and supporters, at the State Championships. Again
you all did Sorrento proud.

The after Party was a lot of fun and it was great to
see the athletes let their hair down and relax. After
so much hard training they certainly deserve a bit
of R&R, but for many it will be short lived, as it is
straight back to training for the Nationals.
Helping out to make both nights a success, a huge
thank you must go out to our wonderful bar
Manager Mike, who with his team of volunteers,
Dave Norton, Sandra Herbert, Kevin Kelly, Amanda
Bowman, Pili Lydiate, Ron Epding and Chris
Murray, Peta Watkins and Chris, for running such
an efficient bar service all weekend. Thank you to
Krystal Kotkis for handling the food on Sunday
night and Deb Vickery, and Rita Berry for your part.
DJ Jeff Xavier did a stand out volunteering job
delivering the music all night. Great stuff.
Thank you to our President, Rob Doherty, who was
not only on the beach all weekend helping out in
the arenas but also for staying around till the end
on Sunday night to lend a hand.
Thank you to everyone else who gave up their
time, too many to mention, but the fantastic club
spirit we get when we all band together and help
out when it is needed, makes it the a great club
we can all be proud of.
Tickets go on Sale this week for the Gala event of the year, The Annual Dinner and Awards Night.
Make your tables of 10 up, and get your tickets quickly so you are not disappointed. Tickets will sell
fast. Pre-Dinner drinks will be in the AQWA tunnel, beneath the sea. What could be better than a
glass of bubbles whilst marvelling at all the Marine wonders. It will be a night to remember so
come along and celebrate.
COMPETITION NEWS – Claire Rafferty
With the completion of the Senior State Titles over the weekend I wish to congratulate all involved.
The Senior State Titles commenced mid last year with the IRB state titles, then moving in to the pool
rescue titles. We then progressed to the lifesaving, R&R and belt swim championships. The state
titles culminated last weekend on both the beach and in the water.
If I was to name all medal winners this newsletter piece would be a document.

I truly would like to thank all our athletes, officials, coach’s, water safety, first aid personnel and our
area managers. A big thanks to Murray Genneff who coordinated the early set up on Friday
afternoon to ensure we had prime viewing positions from out various club tents. At the completion
of all Senior State Title events Sorrento finished a very creditable fourth overall.
