It`s Amazing - St. James Inn
Inn Brief Th e A n n u a l N e w s l e t t e r o f t h e S t. J a m e s I n n Holidays 2007 As we close another year of giving through the St. James Inn, I wish to thank all of you …. Inn and Benefit benefactors, Inn guests, and the many of you that keep the Inn open year after year with your support. When we find ourselves with a decision to make regarding the Inn and don’t know quite what to do, we usually ask ourselves, ”What would Fr. Pat do?” and our answer comes easily. This year it came in the form of a new crop of volunteers, the ones we dubbed the SPA Moms! Many of the volunteers did not know Fr. Pat personally but his vision inspired them. They visited the Inn at our 2007 Open House, said they loved the Benefit last year and wanted join in helping people in their time of need. The SPA Moms – working with the Benefit Committee, through e-mail, and with Starbucks in hand – put on a fabulous, fun and fund-raising Benefit evening. We honored Erny and Mary Lou Pinckert with the Fr. Pat Traynor Award this year for their tireless work for the Inn and in the community – both here or in their adopted community of Arroyo Grande. We are pleased to report, thanks to three generous grants, the short-term-stay program has continued to provide temporary housing for over 100 patients and their families for a night or two. We thank Stella Sasso for managing the program. We are expanding our mission … please watch our soon-to-open web site – stjamesinn.org for announcements. Enjoy Christmas and the holiday season with your friends and family. See you at the 2008 St. James Inn Benefit! Dear Friends of St. James Inn, We were blessed with a variety of guests in 2007 – guests from Guam, Holland, Greece, and 18 US cities. The Inn provided lodging for 22 patients and 25 family members for a total of 989 person days – a full Inn year! It’s Amazing As we celebrate our 20th year, we reflect on the benefit of the St. James Inn to persons who find themselves in our community without resources. Since 1988, thanks to your time, talent and treasure, the St. James Inn has provided almost 15,000 guest-days lodging to patients and their families. Our guests hail from 19 countries, 26 states and 89 cities in California. Thank you. Mary Kay Kotzman Chair, St. James Inn Board Page 1 Many of our guests were patients here for radiation and chemotherapy treatments. We also had the mother of a five-day-old baby who underwent heart surgery. The surgery was successful and the baby is doing well. We also hosted the parents of a one-year-old baby boy who underwent a liver and small bowel transplants … he is doing well too! A guest and her daughter from Greece loved to cook and entertain. They made dinner on three occasions and invited the social worker, the radiation nurses and our Inn guests. They brought joy and fun to the Inn … not to mention the wonderful Greek food. We heard from the patient recently … she is doing well and invited everyone to visit Greece! We hear from many patients who give us updates on their health and activities. They want to keep in touch as they have fond memoirs of the Inn and are so appreciative of the Inn’s benefactors. Blessings to you and a big thank you for all of your support. J A M E S I N N Inn Quotes 2007 “The St. James Inn has been a wonderful experience for me while recouping from lung surgery. Thank you for all you do. The Inn is a God-send. Sandra” “Besides the comfort of the Inn, you have brought a sense of comfort to my sister and me. I am grateful to have a place to lay my head and fully rest without worry, especially in a far-away city. God bless, Carolyn” “With deepest gratitude, thank you for welcoming us into your home. We are especially grateful for your pecuniary support from Claire. It’s been a long haul, staying at the Inn from March until September while Pete underwent “Hospitality is always a grace but it is a true gift to those away from home treatment. We survived separation from our family only because we were and seeking medical care. The very existence of the Inn was inspired by the with people who truly cared. Pedro and Mary Ann” Spirit and has been sustained by the Spirit over the years by all of you who give of yourself in a multitude of ways. Remember: In Gods’ will, in God’s “Our stay at the Inn was a big factor in making my daily way, in God’s time. Sr. MaryAnn” radiation treatments at UCLA much easier to handle. Claire, “UCLA was the only place Bill could get the treatment he needed. We stepped out in faith to receive the treatment not knowing how we would pay for a hotel. God used the Inn and its benefactors to minister to us. We will be eternally grateful. You definitely have a long-term prayer partner in us. Bill and Rhoda” your attention and caring was so appreciated and our daily talks were most enjoyable. Your work in helping so many people with a place to stay is surely a wonderful sharing of love and concern. May God bless each of you, Don and Gerda” Excerpts from Presentation of the 2007 Fr. Pat Traynor Award to Erny and Mary Lou Pinckert Tonight we are here to honor Erny and Mary Lou Pinckert with the Fr. Pat Traynor Award for their exemplary service and commitment to others. Fr. Pat was mentor and role model for many of us. He never gave up – he would get an idea and press others into helping him fulfill it – always working right along side those he cajoled into service. One couple Fr. Pat relied on heavily when he was at St. Paul’s were Erny and Mary Lou – and they never failed him. They didn’t need the limelight – they were the loyal soldiers that were always there when something needed to be done, a helping hand for those in need – quietly, loyally, cheerfully giving of themselves. Both helped establish the St. James Inn – Mary Lou as a Charter Member of the Benefit Committee and Erny the Board of Directors. Mary Lou was our decorator extraordinaire … everyone wanted a Mary Lou designed auction basket … and Erny led us as Master of Ceremonies in the Benefit Auctions. Erny and Mary Lou provide help wherever they see a need … be it here or in their second home in Arroyo Grande … they are just that kind of people. The St. James Inn community is blessed to have them – and we are pleased to honor them with the Fr. Pat Traynor Award for 2007! Page 2 S T . J A M E I S N N How can you help? The St. James Inn depends on the support and generosity of people like you. Our entire operating budget is funded solely through our ongoing fundraising efforts. To keep our doors open for another year, here are three ways you can help: 1) Attend our annual fundraiser. The most fun way to support the Inn is to come to our big party this summer. We’re busy planning another great night. There’ll be wonderful food, free-flowing drinks, dancing under the stars, and loads of exciting auction items. Come early. Come ready to bid. Come with friends. It’s going to be a fantastic evening (details below). 2) Donate something special for our auction. Another great way to give is to donate something spectacular to be put up for auction at our fundraiser. This is a fun opportunity to be creative and come up with something that will start a bidding frenzy. Below are just a few general suggestions. We’re confident you’ll come up with some great ideas of your own. Weekend Getaways Sports/Entertainment Tickets Gift Certificates Consulting Services Handmade Items Airfare & Travel Packages Group Dinners/Outings/Events Home Electronics & Appliances Personal Training Artwork & Decor Vacation Rentals Private Tours Digital Cameras & iPods Tutoring/Lessons/Classes Culinary Treats Hotel Accommodations Golf/Tennis/Poker Packages CD and DVD Box Sets Portrait Photography Fine Wines & Spirits Family Fun Health Club Memberships Jewelry & Clothing Spa/Beauty Treatments Special Theme Packages Please call Julie Murphy (310-837-5270), Denise Kilroy (310-273-5573) or Kim Combs (424-298-8149) for more information on donating auction items. 3) Keep us in mind in your end-of-year giving. We’re also fond of the “get out your checkbook” approach. Nothing helps our bottom line more than a direct contribution. So, when you’re thinking about where to make charitable donations this year, we hope you’ll consider the St. James Inn. Your tax-deductible contribution will go directly to our efforts to keep families together in their time of greatest need. Save The Date! Come for an evening tasty cuisine, incredible auctions and playing your hunch at the Beverly Hills Country Club Catch up with old friends - make new ones! ♦ Enjoy placing wager or two! ♦ Take home something fabulous! ♦ It’s the multi-generational party of the year! Patrick Traynor, CSP The St. James Inn was founded in 1988 by Fr. Patrick Traynor, CSP. As chaplain at the UCLA Medical Center, Fr. Pat dreamed of providing a “home away from home” where families of the sick and dying could come for respite from the daily routine of a hospital. Through his dedication and inspiration, the St. James Inn became a reality and has provided shelter for hundreds of patients and families from all over the world in their time of great need.
