USCGA PARENTS ASSOCIATION CHESAPEAKE AND POTOMAC
Newsletter November 2014 USCGA PARENTS ASSOCIATION CHESAPEAKE AND POTOMAC CHAPTER NEWSLETTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Brad Kidwell Greetings, I hope you all were able to visit the Academy for Parents’ Weekend and spend some time with your Cadet. As parents of a Firstie, Michelle and I can relay how this Parents’ Weekend was bitter sweet as it was our last and we soaked it all up knowing it might be awhile before we got back. We’ve got a lot of stuff going on in the Parents Association and in our Chapter. Renee started this fabulous newsletter and Joe Sandri has built a CGA handy information mobile app that we are planning to sell. We donated $4,000 to the Cadet Exercise Room Initiative and $1,000 to broken televisions in Chase Hall this past summer. Our next Chapter Meeting is Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at la Madeleine Café restaurant, 5876 Kingstowne Center, Alexandria, VA 22315. Please plan to attend. Don’t forget to sign up for the Holiday Ball. It counts as one of the “Formal” events that our Cadets have to attend each year. See you at the meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity for our C&P Chapter members to show the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s flag and to meet with our fellow service academy parents, cadets, and midshipmen. All cadets are required to attend two designated formal events during the year. Your support and attendance at the JSAB Ball will help our cadets appreciate the importance of "showing the flag" at formal events - something they will be called upon to demonstrate as commissioned officers throughout their careers. Formal social events are a critical aspect of life in uniform as they serve a very important function by promoting camaraderie, esprit de corps, and leadership development. These events also embrace family members, spouses, guests, and professional associates who make great sacrifices every day to quietly support the military. are invited to attend them. The JSAB is well worth the cost of attending and provides an opportunity to get "dressed up" with your cadet for a memorable holiday evening. If you have any questions, please contact Holly Shannon, the 2014 JSAB Committee Chair, West Point Parents Club by email at dalshannon@aol.com, or by phone at 703-236-9302. Online registration is located at: https://www.blacktie-dc.com/calendar/event-detail.cfm?id=4306 Although the 23rd falls two days before Christmas and may present a challenge for some of us, especially where holiday travel plans are a concern, the C&P Chapter leadership is hoping you will attend the event.
