TONY MURLAND AU C T I O N S ENGLAND Tony Murland Auctions are proud to present an Auction of Fine Tools as a tribute to Roy Arnold 1926- 2009 Saturday 24th April 2010 The Cedars Hotel, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 2AJ 162 1003 1004 200 1005 1006 209 239 1007 1008 1009 1002 ROY ARNOLD 1926 - 2009 Our thanks for all the inspiration and memories that Roy left with us and our thoughts are with Julanne & Family In 1991 I needed to move my Tool Shop from its location in Ipswich. I was talking to Roy and I asked him if an opportunity arose would he mind if I moved to Needham Market? “Of course not” he replied, “it would do us both good”. This spontaneous reaction sums him up well – a wonderfully kind and generous man. Two weeks later No.78 High Street came up for sale and the rest is history.Roy was the best of friends and unselfishly shared his amazing knowledge with me without reservation. In his youth Roy obtained a job in the publishing world in the USA. My favourite story of his was when he flew for the first time to the USA to commence his job. This was in the days when there was nothing but First Class and tickets were very expensive! Roy gave a wonderful description of the flight attendant coming down the aisle with a trolley and on it was a large joint of beef. She would then ask each passenger which cut they preferred and then proceeded to carve the joint!! ... and serve the vegetables!! .... those were the days! Roy loved food and cooking – he was a gourmand. I miss the countless times I have called in and he has insisted on scrambled eggs and smoked salmon – wonderful. If it was after 11.30 he would insist on a glass of wine! He was the man behind the whole world of antique tools as we know it today and we miss him dearly. In the early years of Roy’s shop many of you may remember a superb eighteenth century pine tool chest in his hall carved with various owners’ initials. I had always loved this tool chest and finally when he re-arranged his shop he kindly sold it to me. My family and I are now privileged to be the current custodians of this lovely item and every time I look at it I think of Roy. We will not offer a minute’s silence as I believe Roy would have said, “Let’s get on with the auction!!” The fine tools offered today are only here because of what Roy started. So instead of a minute’s silence, when you are next eating smoked salmon with a glass of wine, give a thought to the fantastic father of the eclectic world of antique tools.
