You’ll find exciting activities to occupy the whole family, in addition to which you’ll be able to delight in the art, gastronomy and wellness on offer in the region. For generations, the northern tip of Denmark has been a popular holiday destination, with its distinctive scenery, broad sandy beaches and proximity to the sea, which can be seen, heard and tasted as the salt is carried inland by the wind. The reflections of the sunlight on the sea have also given rise to the region’s sobriquet, the Land of Light. Further inland, you experience a completely different atmosphere as the coastal landscape gives way to forest and fertile farmland. Cattle graze on rich pastures, and watercourses meander through the countryside. The region is criss-crossed by bridle paths and footpaths – a paradise for enjoyable bike rides and delightful picnics. Regardless of whether you arrive by car, by bike or on public transport, or whether you’re staying at a hotel, a holiday home or a campsite, you’ll meet people for whom it’s a point of honour to be welcoming hosts, thus ensuring that your particular holiday will be absolutely perfect. Look forward to a holiday at the Top of Denmark! Depending on your mood and interests, you can choose to relax on the beach, get out and about in the countryside or experience art and culture in the region’s towns and cities. The forces of nature here are so powerful that we’ve been unable to shape and form the countryside as we have throughout most of the rest of the country with the establishment of fields, plantations, towns and roads. On the headland of Skagens Odde with the migrating dunes at Råbjerg Mile and much of the west coast down past Rubjerg Knude, the landscape has been shaped by the westerly wind and ocean currents, with the wind ensuring that this landscape is in a constant state of flux. Råbjerg Mile is one of Europe’s biggest migrating dunes and has an area of one square kilometre and a height of up to 40 metres. The dune contains around 4 million cubic metres of sand and migrates at a rate of 15-20 metres a year across the headland. It engulfs everything in its path and leaves a sand-blasted stony plain in its wake. Any dry sand right down to the ground water is blown away, so the plain is pocked by several shallow lakes. WHERE NATURE HAS PREVAILED During the 17th and 18th centuries, dune plantations were established around Hirtshals and Skagen to arrest the migration of the sand. In one area, however, such measures remained unsuccessful – at Rubjerg Knude south of Lønstrup. Here nature has gained the upper hand. The westerly wind hits the coastal cliff almost every day of the year, loosening the grains of sand, which are then carried over the edge and deposited on the top. The mound of sand gets higher every year, and even the lighthouse on the summit is now partly buried. A little further north, the POWERFUL FORCES OF NATURE church at Mårup is now at the edge of the abyss. Parts of the churchyard have crashed into the sea, and the church has been dismantled, leaving only the foundations marking the original outline of the church. A FOOT IN EACH SEA The entire region at the Top of Denmark has been shaped by the wind and the sea. The absolute tip at Skagen’s Gren is a piece of Denmark that isn’t easy to pin down. It’s constantly moving, depending on the direction of the wind and the ocean currents, and can point in all directions from north to east. It’s also where the two seas, Skagerrak and Kattegat, meet. It’s a unique experience to wade out and stand with a foot in each sea. 5 6 LIGHTHOUSES The lighthouses along our coasts Constructed at a time when sailing on the oceans was exceptionally perilous, the region’s lighthouses bear witness to exciting stories of shipwrecks and human fates. They are impressive structures, and if you venture up to the top, you’ll be rewarded by fantastic views. LIGHTHOUSES Denmark is an island nation and shipping has had great importance ever since the Viking Age. Low coasts and sandbanks made navigation hazardous at night and in poor visibility, as evidenced by the thousands of wrecks along the coasts, with more than 10,000 wrecks being registered by the Danish Agency for Culture. The waters around the Top of Denmark were particularly difficult to navigate due to the low coasts and submerged sandbanks. The first Danish beacon was erected in Skagen in 1561 and was replaced by a bascule light in 1627. During the course of the 16th century a lively maritime trade arose between North Jutland and southern Norway. The vessels that sailed between the two countries were flat-bottomed and could land directly on the beach at Løkken, Lønstrup and Tornby. Grain and butter were exported to Norway, with timber and iron traded in return. 7 8 LIGHTHOUSES The lighthouse on the islands of Hirsholmene guides ships around the treacherous stone reef on the approach to Frederikshavn. Later, this foreign trade was plied by larger ships from bigger ports on the east coast of Jutland and Denmark’s islands. Denmark was one of the world’s great seafaring nations, and all ships had to navigate around Skagen’s Gren in order to head out onto the world’s oceans. However, the large, deep-draught ships were vulnerable to the treacherous sandbanks that were constantly moving depending on the wind and the currents. Rounding Skagen’s Gren at night was extremely perilous, and many didn’t make it. The numerous wrecks provided a welcome source of income to the local fishermen and farmers, who – at the same time – risked their lives to save thousands of stranded sailors. As technology progressed, beacons and lighthouses were developed to guide the seafarers. The lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude Fyr was erected more than 200 m inland, but the coast has gradually been eroded. It is expected that the lighthouse will crash into the sea within the next 10-15 years. RUBJERG KNUDE FYR Height: 23 m Built: 1900 Decommissioned: 1968 Open to the public. New steps and kaleidoscope. Expected to be consumed by the sea in 10-15 years. HIRTSHALS FYR Height: 35 m Built: 1863 Decommissioned: No Current use: Still in service, public access. The first Danish beacon was constructed in Skagen in 1561 on the orders of King Frederik II. It was basically just a fire and not particularly effective. In 1627 it was replaced by Vippefyret. This bascule light was a construction in which an iron basket containing burning coal could be raised some 10 m into the air. SKAGEN WEST FYR Height: 25 m Built: 1956 Decommissioned: No Current use: Still in service, no public access. SKAGEN FYR Height: 46 m Built: 1858 Decommissioned: No Current use: Still in service, buildings fitted out as a bird experience centre. LIGHTHOUSES The grey lighthouse in Skagen is still in service, but the buildings have been converted into a bird experience centre. It’s possible to climb up the 46-m-high lighthouse. Over the next 300-400 years numerous increasingly tall lighthouses were erected along the Danish coasts, in addition to which lightships were placed at dangerous locations in the open sea. Today, modern navigation technology has made lighthouses less critical for shipping, and many of them have been taken out of service. The lighthouses have as far as possible been preserved as culture historical DET HVIDE FYR, SKAGEN Height: 21 m Built: 1747 Decommissioned: 1858 Current use: Exhibitions and events. attractions, and are used as observation towers or similar. At the Top of Denmark from Rubjerg Knude in the west around Skagen’s Gren to the islands of Hirsholmene off the coast of Frederikshavn there are no less than eight lighthouses, four of which remain in service. There‘s public access to four of the towers and the bascule light in Skagen. VIPPEFYRET, SKAGEN Height: 10 m Built: 1627 Decommissioned: 1747 Current use: Monument, lit every year on Midsummer’s Eve. With stories told by passionate locals, you have the chance to get involved and become part of the experience itself. Bangsbo Fort, Frederikshavn Hunting for amber, Sæby We’ve put together almost 1700 events in our “Good stories” brochure – pick it up at the tourist office! Summertime in the country, Mosbjerg GOOD STORIES Sæby Church At the Top of Denmark we’ve turned live storytelling into an art, one which we’re improving at all the time. New storytellers are engaged every year, and in 2016 we can present even more events featuring good stories – many of them also in English or German. Good stories describe both heroes and villains – including the rescuers in Skagen and Børglum’s notorious bishop, Stygge Krumpen. They also provide an insight into everyday life today and during the past. Visit the smallholder’s family from 1930 at the smallholding in Mosbjerg, which is occupied during the summer months, or go on a guided Guided tour - Hirtshals fish auction tour of Sæby and hear about the town’s history as it developed from an abbey town in the Middle Ages to a popular spa resort and centre for Danish poets at the end of the 19th century. Almost 1700 events with good stories are available during the course of the year. Some are for children, others for adults. Some are for the whole family, others aimed at enthusiasts. The majority are local events, but guests are very welcome. Enquire at the tourist office or check online at toppenafdanmark.dk! Drachmann evenings, Skagen 11 12 THE BEACHES Miles of lovely white sandy beaches Broad white sandy beaches are one of the characteristic features of the Top of Denmark. They’re perfect for bathing and fun and games when the sun shines, whilst bracing walks, windsurfing and fishing can all be enjoyed on other days. Plenty of fresh air and salt on your cheeks are guaranteed. A day on the beach is one of the highlights of any holiday, whether you like bathing, sunbathing, relaxing, games in the dunes or a good picnic basket. Outside the bathing season the beach is also a great experience, with activities including bracing walks, windsurfing or fishing. On the Skagerrak coast from Løkken to Skagen you find the broadest sandy beaches with plenty of space for playing games and for relaxing. In most places it is permitted to drive your car onto the beach, as long as you pay attention to the other guests there. If you drive a little further away from the ramps, there’s usually plenty of space for playing ball games or flying kites. The water is of high quality at all the beaches at the Top of Denmark. In the Municipality of Hjørring, the Blue Flag beaches have white flags, but they mean the same, i.e. a symbol of high-quality bathing water and good facilities for guests. On the Skagerrak coast there are often big waves, which are popular with many guests. However, there can be undercurrents – and so you need to be careful. If you’re not a strong swimmer, it’s recommended that you only go out to the first sandbank. Children shouldn’t bathe alone. On the east coast the beaches have shallower water and smaller waves. You can also find lovely sandy beaches and dunes here. On the east coast shells tend to be washed up onto the beach, so there are good chances of finding amber. Generally speaking it’s not possible to drive your car onto the beach. Instead it must remain behind the dunes. On the beaches at Løkken, Tornby, Tversted and on the palm-lined beach in Frederikshavn there are manned lifeguard stations during the bathing season. During the winter months – 1 Octo ber until 1 April – you can let your dog off the leash on the beach, whilst during the summer it must be kept on a lead. THE BEACHES 13 14 FUN ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN Fun and games for the kids During the holidays the family has time to do things together – often spanning several generations. Such experiences are exciting and take place on the children’s terms. Mum and dad – and perhaps also granddad and grandma – can also join in. Fun-Park Hirtshals Bolcheriet FunHouse FUN ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN 15 Nordsøen Oceanarium Children and animals are a sure-fire combination, and a day in one of the funparks is a great experience for the whole family, with fascinating animals, some of which you can pat and stroke, pony-riding and lots of opportunities to play. If the weather is more conducive to indoor activities, a fun-house, the swimming baths or a bowling centre are obvious alternatives. Skiveren miniature golf centre If you’re a sporty family, you may wish to rent bikes or canoes and enjoy a lovely day in the countryside. A picnic in the forest or a walk along the beach to find amber or conches are great ways of doing things together. If an element of competition is required, there are several good miniature golf courses in the area, or you can play football golf, which is a challenge for both older children and adults alike. Nordsøen Oceanarium in Hirtshals is both educational and exciting. Here children meet flatfish that can be patted and stroked and seals that display their acrobatic skills to get hold of a herring at feeding time. Pay a visit to the crab coast and try to catch a living crab. One of the best attractions in Løkken and Skagen is a visit to Bolcheriet to see sweets being made. The kids will also love to go ghost hunting at the historic manor house at Sæbygård Slot. A few kilometres south of Løkken you find Fårup Sommerland, which is bound to be on any child’s wish-list. The amusement park has attractions and rides to last a whole day or more. Experience your favourite music or learn about new genres and musicians! Some people travel a long way to listen to a particular band or a solo artist. Others prefer festivals with a wide range of different bands. And some just come to enjoy the company of others facilitated by the music. Almost all genres of music are represented in North Jutland, so you’re sure to be able to find interesting music to listen to. The Top of Denmark has a great many music venues and talented local performers, whilst a wealth of concerts and festivals are organised throughout the year. Amongst the biggest events are: Vendsyssel Festival, Scandinavia’s biggest classical music festival, which features more than 50 concerts during the summer; Skagen Festival, Denmark’s oldest music festival, featuring a wide variety of music that brings Skagen to life during the first weekend of July; and Rock in Frederikshavn, which presents well-known Danish bands such as Gnags and Kim Larsen in the middle of June. All towns – both large and small – have their own musical events that attract people from Denmark and further afield. These include Jazz and Fish in Sæby, the accordion rally in Bindslev, Jazzy Dayz in Tversted, Løkken concert, Blues Festival in Frederikshavn and Music under the Steps in Hirtshals. You can see a list of events at toppenafdanmark. dk or check out the major venues like Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Vendelbohus in Hjørring and Kulturhus Kappelborg in Skagen. GET ON YOUR BIKE The cycle is an ideal means of transport at the Top of Denmark. The region has no severe climbs, but many good cycle paths and routes away from heavy traffic featuring lots of attractions en route. Hirtshals there’s a special cycle route featuring the sign of the fish. However, the region has good and attractive cycle routes throughout. At the tourist office you can find informative cycle maps and descriptions of the routes. CYCLING HOLIDAY Set off on your bike with a sleeping bag and tent – there’s nothing that beats such a sense of freedom! It’s easy to get around in the region. You can stay overnight at campsites or at one of the many camping grounds that have been established along the cycle routes in the region. You can stay an extra day or continue on your way, depending on your mood and what you meet en route. TAKE A SHORTCUT! If you’re staying at a holiday home, a campsite or hotel, cycling is a good way of getting around in the local area and experiencing things that car drivers are unable to. On a bike you can travel everywhere, including minor roads and paths where vehicular traffic is difficult. You’ll see towns and landscapes from new angles and will find it easier to speak with the locals. On a bike you stimulate all your senses – sounds and smells, the wind in your hair and the sun on your cheeks. LØKKEN 25 Løkken is known and loved for its fine sandy beach and the characteristic white beach huts and fishing boats on the beach near the breakwater. For generations, holiday guests from far and wide have travelled to Løkken to experience the sea, the dunes and the lovely town with sand in the streets. Løkken is a lively town in the summer months, when a number of events are organized for both children and adults. The high season also features annual events such as Løkken Concert, Løkken Antiques Fair and the socalled “Vesterhavsmarch”, which is an organized walk along the beach. Løkken Concert is a great day out with performances by popular bands playing music that suits all ages. In winter Santa Claus sails to Løkken and a Christmas weekend is held at Børglum Abbey. On the main square and in the pedestrian streets you’ll find restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating flanked by shops which help to provide a great atmosphere. Løkken offers good shopping, and at the summer’s Open-by-Night events and flea markets there’s every chance of getting a bargain. For families with children and youngsters a visit to Action House is an essential part of a holiday in Løkken. Action House has go-karts, bowling, laser games, paintball, disco and many other activities. The kids will also love a visit to Bolcheriet on the square, where you can see how sweets are made the old-fashioned way. There are also a number of attractions within a short drive from Løkken, e.g. Børglum Abbey, candle production at Bombæk Lys near Vrå and Family Farm Fun Park. You can also explore the town and the area in another way by visiting our plantations and following footpaths such as the North Sea Trail, Kløverstierne and Hærvejen. The most famous – or indeed infamous – resident at Børglum Kloster was Stygge Krumpen, who lived from 1485 until 1551. Today the abbey houses numerous exhibitions and attractions. 2016 Børglum Kloster Løkken 2016 - guiden provides plenty more inspiration – pick up a copy at Løkken Turistbureau. Løkken 26 LØNSTRUP Lønstrup – a fishing village on the edge The sea that has provided the livelihood of Lønstrup’s population for generations is now threatening to devour the cliff on which the town was built. Every year the North Sea takes a bite out of the steep bluffs surrounding the small fishing village. Several summer cottages have surrendered to the elements, whilst cultural bastions such as Mårup Church and the lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude have also been hit. Mårup Church no longer exists. The church was built at the beginning of the 13th century and at that time was situated around two kilometres from the coast. The edge of the cliff has moved ever closer to the church and in 2008 a decision was made to dismantle the top of the church, leaving only the walls in place. In 2015 the final remnants of the church were taken down. The churchyard and the graves have not been touched and will eventually surrender to the elements as they crash down into the North Sea. Rubjerg Knude is the highest and most spectacular part of the cliff at Lønstrup. The cliff is 15 km long and runs from Lønstrup in the north to Løkken in the south. At Rubjerg, the cliff reaches a height of 90 metres, whilst elsewhere it has a height of 30-50 m. The world’s only lighthouse buried in the sand will probably crash into the sea in 10-15 years’ time. It was impossible to foresee the fate of the lighthouse when it was built in 1900 at the highest point of the rise, approximately 60 metres above sea level. Realdania and the Danish Nature Agency are currently working on a major project involving the lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude aimed at creating better access to unique locations in the Danish landscape. A new flight of steps is being built up through the tower to the balcony, whilst a human-sized kaleidoscope will throw the light reflected off the sea into the tower, providing a contrast to the days when the light from the lighthouse shone out to sea. The countryside surrounding Lønstrup is great for cycling and hiking. Walk along a section of the North Sea Trail from Rubjerg Knude through Lønstrup, Harrerenden and Skallerup to the beach at Nørlev Strand. Or experience the magnificent scenery in the area on horseback, with riding trips available in the dune plantation and on the beach. The bridle path passes through the countryside around Lønstrup. In Lønstrup you’ll find a great selection of lovely places to eat. Several cafés have live music on the programme throughout the summer. Their menus have something to suit all tastes, but fish and shellfish are of course particularly popular in a town located just a few metres from the North Sea. Rubjerg Knude Fyr It’s once again possible to get up into the partly buried lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude via a new interior flight of steps. This Realdania project is designed to ease access to unique locations in the Danish countryside. LØNSTRUP Lønstrup attracts a great number of artists and craftsmen. Their galleries and open workshops are very much part of the townscape. On the winding high street with its well-maintained old fishermen’s houses, you find painters, glassblowers, potters and goldsmiths, and you can see at first-hand such craftsmanship being carried out. Lønstrup also has an attractive range of shops specialising in antiques and retro items. A fertile region with arable land, meandering watercourses and peaceful forests. It’s also here you’ll find the region’s metropolis, Hjørring – an exciting cultural and commercial town. | SINDAL 29 Hjørring is Vendsyssel’s former cultural capital which welcomes its guests with shopping, cafés, museums, theatre and lots of attractions, such as days to celebrate Stygge Krumpen, a popular revue and cattle show. The town has also managed to maintain its historic town centre, whilst encouraging development in its surrounding neighbourhoods. In recent years exciting buildings have been built, such as Metropol with its shopping centre and library, another shopping centre on the site of the former slaughterhouse and a block of flats with energy-neutral apartments. In the town centre you find gems such as three medieval churches, Vendsyssel Historical Museum and several open workshops. If you enjoy art, then head for the art museum or look out for works of art on the streets or at the squares, including P. Nørkjærs Plads, where Professor Bjørn Nørgaard has produced his own sculptural interpretation of Nordic mythology. After a walk round the town you can quench your thirst with a drink at Bryghuset Vendia. Hjørring is a very green town with lovely parks and green areas. Christiansgave and Svanelunden invite you to relax and enjoy yourself. The park at Sct. Knuds Kilde has an open-air stage where summer plays are performed. At the northern edge of the town are the hills of Hjørring Bjerge, a unique 90-hectare area of countryside that features the dramatic landscapes shaped by the ice age. At Bellevue you’ll find an observation tower with a view of the entire region, as well as a gallows mound that fortunately hasn’t been used since 1822. Sindal lies in a lush valley at the point where the stream of Uggerby Å turns north as it runs out to its mouth in Skagerrak. The stream is great for trout-fishing and canoeing. The forest at Tolne Skov is a popular destination, whilst at the agricultural museum in Mosbjerg you can see what living on the land was like some 100 years ago. Find more inspiration for your holiday in the Hjørring Guide, which you can pick up at Metropol, Østergade 30. Nordsøen Oceanarium Northern Europe’s biggest aquarium with 6 million litres of water and marine adventures for the entire family that last a whole day! Wave to the diver as he feeds the sunfish and other marine animals, get close to the seals and catch crabs with your bare hands! New: On 27 June the “Whale research hut” opens, where you can learn all about the giants of the sea. 31 HIRTSHALS Hirtshals is the perfect holiday destination for families that love the countryside and want to enjoy an active holiday. Here you’ll find some of the country’s best waters for windsurfing, lovely sandy beaches and lots of spots for angling, both from the coast and on boat trips. The town centre has a pleasant shopping and café environment Fishing and the shipping industry have always made up Hirtshals’ livelihood. Traditional coastal fishing has been superseded by ocean-going trawlers and seine vessels. The Port of Hirtshals is one of the country’s biggest commercial and fishing ports. It’s also an important commercial harbour as a nerve centre for the ferry routes to Norway, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Historically, it was a hazardous sailing route, with many vessels being lost, but from 1863 it became considerably safer to sail to Hirtshals, thanks to the construction of the Hirtshals Fyr lighthouse. The lighthouse remains in service and you can climb to the top – 144 steps – and enjoy the magnificent view. Close to the lighthouse is one of the huge batteries of guns from the Second World War that make up Bunker Museum Hirtshals. The western harbour in Hirtshals has grown with the town thanks to Den Grønne Plads and ‘Trappen’ – the town square and the town’s characteristic flight of steps created by painter Dorte Dahlin and sculptor Mogens Møller in 1997. They make up an architectural gem with fantastic viewpoints of the harbour and the sea, from where you can let your thoughts wander to distant skies. Many of the town’s major events are held at the western harbour, e.g. Hirtshals Fish Festival and Music under the Steps. Popular guided tours of the town begin at Den Grønne Plads. Nordsøen Oceanarium has northern Europe’s biggest aquarium – 4.5 million litres of water – and tells the story of life in the sea that surrounds the region. You can get close to all the exciting fish in the North Sea. The kids will love crab coast, where they can fish for crab and pat or stroke the back of a plaice or starfish. The dune plantations at Tornby and Hirtshals provide great inspiration for hiking, cycling and riding trips. Here you can head out on Ancient Road Hærvejen, which runs all the way down to Germany along the backbone of Jutland, the North Sea Trail, which runs along the coasts of many countries in Europe, or one of the many local footbaths and routes, including Riderute Nordvendsyssel, a 200-km-long bridle path. At the dune plantation of Tornby Klitplantage you’ll find challenging MTB tracks and at Hirtshals Golfklub you can play 18 holes in picturesque surroundings. Today the old beach hotel has been turned into a large, modern holiday resort and has been augmented by two attractive campsites and several hundred holiday homes along the coast. The sun, the sand and the sea are unchanged. Beach fashions have changed a great deal, however. Holidaymakers no longer arrive by mail carriage, but in their own car, and a lot more languages are spoken than when Tversted was discovered as a holiday destination. But the atmosphere is the same. The town has an atmosphere of tranquillity, relaxation and enjoyment. Tversted is also a popular destination for most of the local population of Vendsyssel. At least once during the course of the summer you should come to Tversted to enjoy the beach atmosphere, visit the craftsmen, eat an ice cream at the blue ice-cream kiosk and see the sunset. Many return in the autumn when there are Jazzy Dayz in Tversted. The countryside around Tversted is ideal for hiking, cycling and riding. West of the town you can see how the two watercourses, Tversted Å and Uggerby Å, cut through the dunes as they make their way out to Ska gerrak. East of the town the dune plantation stretches along the coast. The lakes of Tverstedsøerne make a lovely destination for an excursion with a large nature playground for children. A little further east you find EagleWorld, where you can experience falconers working with the impressive birds of prey. Every Sunday and Wednesday from June to August, Tversted Bjærgelaug launches its barge, with anyone over the age of 15 being allowed to row it. Depending on the weather, this takes place every Sunday at 10.00 and Wednesday at 19.00. See you at the boathouse on Tversted beach. Det Blå Ishus The blue ice-cream kiosk has existed since 1920, and over the years has satisfied many locals and tourists with a craving for ice-cream. The kiosk is particularly well-known for its tasty meringue foam and its extensive choice of ice-creams. 34 SKAGEN Skagen Skagen - art, scenery and atmosphere At land’s end, where the two seas meet, lies the small fishing town – shaped by the wind and the sand, brought to life by the light and the artists. The Skagen Guide is packed with information and inspiration for your holiday. Pick up a copy at Skagen tourist office, Vestre Strandvej 10. Skagen Tversted Hirtshals Hjørring Lønstrup Løkken Ålbæk Frederikshavn Sindal Sæby ATTRACTIONS: Skagens Museum, Michael & Anna Ancher’s House, Drachmann’s House and Kystmuseet Skagen. SKAGEN 35 An ice cream at the square from where to watch the sunset, a cup of coffee in the museum gardens, a beer on the quay, a glass of white wine at a preview at one of the galleries – visiting Skagen always provides something extra. The special atmosphere in the town, the light which is reflected in the sea, and the landscape characterised by the wind and the sand – adding even more value to your visit. 600 years ago Skagen was the region’s leading royal borough, although the town didn’t have any streets or squares. However, it had fishermen and shipping – which both brought wealth. This period of prosperity was superseded by flooding and sand migration which almost destroyed Skagen. From the mid-19th century things took a turn for the better again, and at the end of the century artists discovered the unique light in Skagen and the great contrasts in the landscape and the local population. The light and the artists are still here. The scenery is as wonderful as ever. And the town’s livelihood is still based on fishing and shipping – and from tourism, because today Skagen has become “public property”. Most people have something that ties them to Skagen: Perhaps a particular place that’s the essence of their Skagen, or a season or an event, e.g. local theatre, m usic festival or the Skagen rally for vintage cars and motorbikes. You’ll almost certainly find your own piece of Skagen that you’ll look forward to returning to. That’s the thing about Skagen – it’s highly addictive. The countryside on Skagen’s headland is a magnificent attraction. Make sure you don’t miss out on a trip to Råbjerg Mile, a huge migrating dune covering one square kilometre which is swept across the country by the wind at a rate of 15 m per year. If you raise your head, you’re bound to spot exciting birds, not least birds of prey. Skagen is one of Europe’s best locations for bird-lovers. Skagens Museum The Museum has recently been extended and revamped, thus providing even better conditions in which the works of the Skagen painters can be exhibited. 36 FREDERIKSHAVN Frederikshavn – town, beach and great scenery Cultural events, urban life and a fantastic shopping milieu characterize the enterprising harbour town with proud maritime traditions. OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION: 8 hotels, 1 hostel, 1 campsite, 1 sports centre, 3 watersports harbours, holiday homes and private rooms. FREDERIKSHAVN 37 Frederikshavn is used to receiving many guests. With the region’s largest hotel capacity, the town is well equipped to receive both large groups of conference guests and individual families that choose Frederikshavn as a starting point for a holiday in the Land of Light. Exciting adventures await you in Frederikshavn, which, due to the ferry routes to Norway and Sweden, has an international atmosphere and a cultural and commercial life that far exceed that which could be expected of a town of its size. It’s a small city with a museum of art, attractive pedestrian precincts and exciting cafés and restaurants. Throughout the year Frederikshavn puts on a number of cultural events such as outdoor rock concerts, the celebration of Tordenskiold’s deeds in the Great Nordic War of the 18th century and a succession of shows and concerts in Arena Nord and Det Musiske Hus. At the southern outskirts of the town you’ll find the idyllic manor house at Bangsbo with its museum, bota nical gardens, animal park, etc. Here you can see the well-preserved Viking ship, Ellingåskibet. The museum also has an interesting exhibition based on World War II – a good prelude to visiting the big gun positions in the bunker museum, which is located at Bangsbo Fort at the top of the impressive hills high above Kattegat. Bangsbo Botanical Gardens and Animal Park, with its herds of fallow deer and stags, are also well worth a visit for the whole family. North of Frederikshavn you’ll find the palm-lined beach, Palmestranden, which is a beach that lies close to the town and features beach volleyball, a barbecue and activities for both children and adults. The area also has a delightful marina, golf course and fishing park. On cool days you can have fun in the swimming baths and aqua complex, e.g. at the Caribbean-inspired The Reef. Krudttårnet The town’s landmark was built at the end of the 17th century and the gunpowder tower was of strategic importance during the Great Nordic War at the beginning of the 18th century, when Tordenskiold used Frederikshavn as a base. 38 SÆBY - the delightful town by the sea Child-friendly beaches, good hotels and campsites, in addition to a charming urban and harbour environment make Sæby a unique experience. Sæby, which literally means the town by the sea, was a town of great importance in the Middle Ages, when the Carmelite monks built a large monastery in 1475, of which the church of St. Maria still exists. The natural harbour at the mouth of the stream made Sæby a nerve centre for trade and brought wealth to the town. Some of the large merchant houses can still be seen in Algade. At the end of the 19th century Sæby developed into one of the leading spa resorts in the country following the discovery of a life-giving spring, Jernkilden. During the same period Sæby became the preferred summer residence for the country’s leading poets and authors, including Herman Bang, Henrik Ibsen and Holger Drachmann, in addition to Gustav Wied, who lived here permanently. Sæby is still a popular holiday town and home to a number of artists and craftsmen, who contribute to the generation of life and soul in the attractive old royal borough throughout the year. The town has a lively square with lots of specialist shops, restaurants and a harbour where you can get a huge variety of fish and shellfish. Sæby is a musical town with two wind ensembles, a big-band, a Tyrolean band and a myriad of small ensembles and young talents. There’s often music in the streets, culminating in the Whitsun jazz festival, “Fish and Jazz”. Holiday cottages in Sæby are located close to the beach along the long promenade which links the harbour and town to the beach, whilst the summer cottages south of the town have a scenic location in the dune heath landscape close to Lyngså’s wide, child-friendly beaches that provide plenty of space for both games and quiet contemplation. Lying slightly west of the town in the beautiful Sæbygaard Forest is Sæbygaard Manor, which has been home to many historic individuals, including Stygge Krumpen, the Bishop of Børglum, and no less than three admirals. Here children and adults can meet the castle’s ghosts throughout the summer! Voer Å East Vendsyssel’s longest watercourse meets the sea in Voerså, where it’s possible to rent both canoes and pedalos. The canoes can be delivered at any one of five different points, so your trip can last from 5 to 25 km SÆBY Sæby has to be experienced – it’s really that simple. The old cultural town at the mouth of the stream with its monastery church, renaissance castle and medieval town centre has its own unique atmosphere and charm. Sæby has attracted tourists for generations – spa guests, artists and bonvivants. Find more inspiration for your holiday in the Sæby Guide, which can be picked up at Sæby tourist office, Algade 14. OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION: 6 hotels/inns, 1 hostel, 1 holiday resort, 3 campsites and 1500 holiday homes. 39 40 ACTIVITIES Active holidays When you’ve had enough of lying on the beach and soaking up the sun, you can get out and enjoy a range of activities that make for a fun and unforgettable holiday – and the family can take part in these activities together. ACTIVITIES Football golf is both fun and challenging and can be played at several places in the region. The same applies to miniature golf. Perhaps you’d like to try your hand at real golf, although you aren’t actually a regular golfer. The majority of clubs have a par-3 course that’s open to all. A canoe trip on one of the region’s more extensive watercourses is a fun activity for the whole family. You can rent a canoe in Sindal, Uggerby and Voerså. Back on dry land, but still offering plenty of fresh air, you can head off on a great riding trip at Skallerup Seaside Resort. 10-pin bowling is possible in several towns – an activity where everyone can join in and have fun together. There are also several squash and badminton courts, whilst fitness centres can also be used. If you’re looking for more speed and action, you can get behind the wheel as a racing driver at Action House in Løkken, try the Segway course in the same town or challenge your friends to paintball or laser games. You can also learn to surf or paddle a sea kayak – or even go on a kayak safari. The major towns at the Top of Denmark have good swimming baths, where there are play areas for children and the opportunity for adults to get good exercise. You can always finish your visit with a Jacuzzi, sauna or massage. 41 42 ACTIVITIES Bolcheriet® i Løkken Bolcheriet® is a family-owned open workshop which holds a Danish record and specialises in logo sweets. The following year we walked along Ancient Road Hærvejen from Viborg to the German border. It took four summers, and now we’re starting the new stretches of Ancient Road Hærvejen north of Viborg,” explains Birgit Hutters and continues: “We found out that a walking holiday is a great way of spending time together. There’s plenty of time to talk and enjoy things together – whereas finding time at home can often be difficult, where we both have families and Elsebeth is still working”. Elsebeth Jarmbæk is a physiotherapist and employed at the Danish Working Environment Authority, whilst Birgit is a retired associate professor in linguistics at the University of Copenhagen. The two sisters have prepared their trip from home by studying, among other things, Ancient Road Hærvejen’s website, so they’ve booked overnight accommodation at hostels, inns or bed & breakfast in advance. During the hike they use Hærvejen’s app to learn about the route and any attractions in the vicinity. They travel to a nd from the route by public transport and walk around 20 km per day. “The trip though the dune plantation at Tornby was absolutely wonderful. We walked along paths you could only reach on foot, and we didn’t meet another soul. We had the won- derful scenery to ourselves. Rubjerg Knude was a fantastic experience and the heather further south was quite unique,” says Birgit Hutters, who warmly recommends a hiking holiday. “Backpackers have something in common. Everyone is friendly and helpful and we’re able to meet and talk to a lot of people.” In 2015 the sisters got as far as Rød hus Klit Camping, from where they took a taxi to Brovst, the bus to Aalborg and the train home to Stubbekøbing and Holbæk respectively. Next summer they’ll be heading back to North Jutland to resume their hike from Rødklit, setting course for Viborg via Aggersund. OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE They‘re sisters, aged 70 and 58 respectively. They live on the islands of Falster and Zealand. But one week every summer they pull on their hiking boots and rucksack and head out into the Danish countryside. We caught up with Birgit Hutters and Elsebeth Jarmbæk on a hilltop near Børglum. 49 50 OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Go on a hiking trip during your holiday! A pair of good shoes or boots, clothes that match the weather, food and drink in your rucksack – and you’re set for a day full of adventures in the countryside. Perhaps you’re more ambitious and will pack your rucksack for a hiking holiday lasting several days. At the Top of Denmark you’ll encounter a wealth of footpaths, as well as two national hiking routes: the North Sea Trail and Ancient Road Hærvejen. Five fantastic hikes Grenen Spor in Skagen Four routes of 3, 6 and 10 km, one of which is ideal for the walking-impaired, families with prams, etc. Dronningestien in Frederikshavn From Møllehuset up to the panoramic views from the hills of Pikkerbakken and onward to Bangsbo Fort. Tornby Klitplantage, south of Hirtshals Four marked routes through typical west coast landscape. Sections of the route make up parts of the North Sea Trail and Ancient Road Hærvejen. Sæbygård Skov Idyllic route through the beech forest with its meandering stream to the manor house at Sæbygård and the top of Gedebjerget 85 metres above sea level. Tolne Skov Hiking routes starting from the forest pavilion or the car park on Dvergetvedvej. Ancient beech forest, hilly terrain. Pick up more information at the tourist office! OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE The North Sea Trail lives up to its name by running all the way round the North Sea, i.e. through Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Scotland and Norway, with many shorter walks that branch off from the main route. At the Top of Denmark the North Sea Trail runs all the way along the coast from Voerså in the east via Skagen in the north to Løkken in the west. Ancient Road Hærvejen is part of the historic pilgrims’ route from the cathedral in Trondheim to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In North Jutland the route branches into two at Viborg, and thus there is also an eastern pilgrims’ route to Frederikshavn which then crosses Kattegat to Vadstena Abbey on the banks of Vättern in Sweden. In the region you can also find a number of local tracks and footpaths, e.g. at the migrating dune at Råbjerg Mile, in the dune plantations near Skagen, Aalbæk, Tversted, Hirts hals and Tornby, as well as further inland at the hills of Katsig Bakker, the valley at Åsted Ådal or along Sporet at the headland at Odden. In Frederikshavn the footpaths of Dronningestien and Kongestien lead you through the impressive moraine landscape and up onto the hills of Pikkerbakken, which offer views of the town and the sea. Sæby has a wonderful walking route through the forest at Sæbygård and up onto the top of the hill at Gedebjerget. At Skagen’s Gren, four hiking routes have just been opened that take you through the area’s unique landscape of ridges and hollows – as well as to Denmark’s most northerly point, which isn’t, in fact, the tip of Grenen. At many places along the hiking routes, camps or shelters have been established, often with toilets and running water. You can stay here overnight and cook your food over an open fire. You can pick up leaflets and maps of the many hiking routes at local tourist offices. In recent years Ancient Road Hær vejen has been recreated as a hiking route with signposts and information en route. It is already frequented by many people – including pilgrims and ramblers. It’s also popular with families, who can walk a small section of the route on a day’s excursion and thereby enjoy a great day out in the countryside. At the Top of Denmark you can walk Ancient Road Hærvejen from Børg lum Abbey via Lønstrup and the west coast up to Hirtshals, or from Jyske Ås to Frederikshavn. Both stretches take you through picturesque countryside. 51 52 OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Mountainbike – lots of possibilities on your holiday MTB fever has hit Denmark. More and more of us are taking our mountain bike on holiday to enjoy the combination of action and attractive countryside. New tracks and routes through beautiful landscapes await you at the Top of Denmark. OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE 53 At the Top of Denmark you’ll find four official MTB tracks of varying degrees of difficulty – all situated in attractive and typical North Jutland countryside. In addition, there are numerous cycle routes and gravel tracks that are perfect for longer trips on your mountain bike. Tornby Klitplantage For experienced riders. Length: 12 km. Vertical metres: 175 The track runs between lakes, dunes and tall trees. The track is technically challenging for even the best riders. The entire route is single track with many tight bends and a view of Skagerrak. A fun route, and although there are relatively few vertical metres, you’re always either climbing or descending and there are several places where the route runs through sand. Start/Finish: Car park at Købstedvej. Bagterp Plantage Glossary of MTB terms: Single-track: A narrow track where there’s only room for one bike. Hop: An obstacle which you have to jump over on your bike, typically with both wheels off the ground. Drop: Section with a sudden difference in height from one level to a lower level. Berm: A bend in which an artificial curved elevation has been constructed on the outer edge of the bend. Chicken run: An alternative passage that isn’t as demanding, thus enabling riders to avoid the most difficult sections on the route if they’re unsure of their ability. Skinnie: Narrow passage raised above the surface of the ground, e.g. a bridge or a beam laid between two rocks. Rock garden: A very uneven passage consisting of large stones and rocks. For moderately experienced riders and beginners. Length: 4.3 km. Vertical metres: 47 A fun track with countless bends running through a small plantation on the southern outskirts of Hjørring. The route doesn’t boast many vertical metres, but goes up and down all the time, and if you pick up the pace, the route presents a challenge for most riders. The track runs through different types of woodland. Start/Finish: Car park on Aalborgvej. Skagen Klitplantage For moderately experienced riders and beginners. Length: 13 km. Vertical metres: 50 The MTB route runs through the eastern part of the dune plantation and takes in gravel tracks, sandy terrain and well-maintained stable surfaces. The route has a good flow and is demanding enough for beginners to enjoy. The area has only a few hills and the number of climbs are kept to a minimum, so everyone can enjoy cycling and the countryside at the same time. Start/Finish: Car park at Skagen OK & Motions clubhouse, Gl. Landevej 47. Katsig Bakker For experienced riders. Length: 3.4 km. Vertical metres: 130 The route in the hills of Katsig Bakker has many short, steep climbs, as well as a number of exciting descents and a rock garden. Practically the entire route is single track and there’s therefore not much time to relax, which makes the track that much more demanding. Plans are afoot to extend the track by 3-4 km. Start/Finish: 100 m west of the car park at the entrance to Skt. Jørgens Kilde. Sæbygård Skov For moderately experienced riders and beginners. Length: 5 km. Vertical metres: 90 The newly established MTB track in the forest at Sæbygård throws up challenges for both beginners and experienced mountain bike riders. The track is more than 4 km long and splits into two tracks at several points – with a white arrow for riders of all abilities and a red arrow for experienced riders. The MTB track was constructed and is maintained by volunteers from Sæby Motions Cykel Club with support from the municipal authority in Frederiks havn. Wooden bridges have been established at several points on the track. A fast track with a good flow. Start/Finish: Car park at Skovlyst. Pick up our MTB folder! At the tourist office you can pick up a guide to the region’s MTB tracks and other good cycle routes, as well as practical information about other adventures on two wheels at the Top of Denmark. 54 TA K E YOUR DOG ON HOLIDAY Take your dog with you on holiday The dog is the most popular pet in Denmark, with more than 550,000 being kept as pets. There are also good opportunities to take “man’s best friend” with you on holiday at the Top of Denmark. TA K E YOUR DOG ON HOLIDAY For many families the best holiday is a holiday in which they are accompanied by the family dog. The dog, of course, has other requirements and wishes in terms of a holiday than its owners, but this needn’t be a problem – it just requires a bit of planning. transport, and most shops have a hook on which to attach the dog’s lead while you’re inside doing the shopping. vene.dk or download an app that gives directions. Dogs may run off the leash at the beach during the winter season – i.e. from 1 October until 1 April. Both at the beaches and in the dog parks, however, it’s a prerequisite that you’re able to control your dog so that it doesn’t bother other people. The countryside is also a great source of adventure for both two-legged and four-legged animals. The dog will love a walk in the woods or the dune plantation, but remember that it must be kept on a leash so that it doesn’t frighten the wildlife in the forest or the cattle in the field. At the Top of Denmark there are 16 off-leash dog parks, which are enclosed areas in which dogs can run off the leash. You can find the nearest off-leash dog park at www.hundesko- If you’re travelling to Denmark with a dog, there are a number of legal requirements that must be complied with. These involve requirements concerning vaccinations, pet passport and ID marking. Certain races of dog are prohibited in Denmark, including the Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and American Bulldog. You can check out the applicable rules at www. foedevarestyrelsen.dk. Danes’ have a great interest in dogs, which is a great facilitator for striking up a conversation with other dog-owners. A fishing trip is a great activity for the whole family. A fishing trip has both nerve-racking moments and periods of total relaxation. It’s this combination that makes angling such a great reliever of stress and a super holiday activity. You get lots of fresh air, the sun’s rays on your cheeks and the wind in your hair. You have time to enjoy the scenery, and your hunting instinct is stimulated. And there’ll always be a few good stories to tell at the dinner table. The dinner table is the second part of the joy of fishing. Having got lucky on your fishing trip, spent time cooking up something special in the kitchen and anticipating your family or friends tasting the delicious fish dish, the holiday will be a sure-fire success. If you have children with you on a fishing trip, we recommend put & take and natural lakes. You can happily let your children fish here and the chances of a catch are good. Fishing from a breakwater is also good for kids, but remember to give them a life jacket to wear – the water is deep and the stones can be slippery. 58 ANGLING Brasholt Jagt - Fiskeri & Outdoor Brasholt Jagt - Fiskeri og Outdoor 1200 m2 shop. Skagen’s Odde attracts 350 different species of bird every year. The high season to see birds of prey is the period from the end of March until the beginning of June, but you can experience the proud flyers at any time of the year. The autumn migration is a good time to spot waders and sea birds in particular. In the winter the bird table will attract both resident birds and visitors from the north, including the great tit, the bullfinch and the waxwing. birds become increasingly numerous, and sparrowhawks appear along with the first osprey. In the middle of April there are also good chances of spotting white-tailed eagles and the golden eagle. Migrating birds and birds of prey are the great attraction for ornithologists and others interested in birds. On a good day you can count 10-15 species of birds of prey on the migrating routes that gather in Skagen prior to the trip across the water. March is the month that signals the beginning of the migration to the north. The skylark, waxwing and many more species appear. As the weather gets warmer, the wood pigeon and mistle thrush arrive. In April the number of migrating species increases on a daily basis. Doves, corvids and small The headland at Skagens Odde is the very best place to spot birds, but there are many other locations in the region that offer exciting bird attractions: Stensnæs near Voerså, Hirtshals Lighthouse and harbour, Sæbygård Forest, the islands of Hirsholmene, as well as the bogs of Råbjerg Mose to name but a few. Finally, there’s EagleWorld near Tuen, where during the season there are daily displays of falconry. Steppe eagle The beginning of May is the high season for the rough-legged hawk, osprey and merlin. Old World flycatchers, swifts and whinchats appear a few days later, whilst in the middle of May garden warblers, marsh warblers and common rosefinch arrive from the south. Migration continues until June. At the tourist office you can pick up a folder about the birds at the Top of Denmark. SKAGEN BIRD FESTIVAL Every year on the second weekend in May there’s a bird festival in Skagen, where you can go on a guided tour led by experienced ornithologists. 62 ART AND GALLERIES Art and crafts - galleries and workshops At the tourist office you can pick up a folder about Art, Antiques & Museums at the Top of Denmark. Arts and crafts give you something extra to take home with you – an extra dimension to your experience of a country or a region. Standing exactly where a work of art came to life and seeing what the painter or potter saw are unique experiences. Perhaps you found a piece of amber on the beach and then had it transformed into a beautiful piece of jewellery at the amber polisher’s. Craftsmen are an important part of life at the Top of Denmark. Potters, glass-blowers and many other craftsmen are inspired – just like painters – by the special light and the great contrasts in both landscape and living conditions. The stormy sea and the windswept land have fascinated artists for generations – and still do today. The region is known for its diversity of artists and craftsmen, many of whom you can meet in galleries and workshops. Here painters, sculptors, potters, glass artists, amber polishers and many others practise their craft. Many artists open their studio or workshop to the general public. Some put on special events in which guests get an introduction to the art form and have the chance to try their hand with brush and colours. The majority of craftsmen have a gallery or shop adjacent to their workshop, and it always adds a little something to buy directly from the artist. Everything’s still here and waiting for you to explore an era of Danish art whose presence can still be felt in Skagen. Michael Ancher was one of the first artists that painted in Skagen – he began as early as 1874, and he was also the only one who lived in the town permanently. In 1880 he married Anna, the daughter of hotel owner Brøndum, and the hotel soon became a haunt for an increasing number of artists, including Drachmann, Tuxen and Krøyer. What actually attracted some of Denmark’s most skilled painters to Skagen? Indeed, these were painters that had trained and lived in Copenhagen, in addition to which the majority had already made a name for themselves in Europe. It was the fascination of traveling to the outermost region of Denmark and meeting a fishing population that lived off the sea – and not infrequently lost their lives in the same sea – combined with the dramatic scenery and the unique light which reflections from the sea created over Skagen. This combination provided the painters with fantastic subjects, and they soon began to appreciate their mutual inspiration and sense of community, despite the inevitable conflicts and jealousies that occurred. The Skagen painters also painted each other, which can be seen on the portrait frieze in Brøndum’s dining hall at Skagens Museum. In Michael Ancher’s “Christening” several of his colleagues appear as godparents. Family and friends are also depicted in P. S. Krøyer’s “Hip hip hooray” and “Midsummer blaze on Skagen beach”. The lives of the Skagen painters and many of their works can be experienced at Skagens Museum, a museum that was established by several of the painters in 1908 while they were still active artists. Recently the museum has been extended and refurbished in accordance with plans drawn up by the museum’s original architect, Ulrik Plesner, back in 1930. 70 MUSEUMS OF ART AND EXHIBITIONS Encounter art at museums and exhibitions The unique light, the distinctive landscapes and the people at the Top of Denmark have attracted painters for generations. At art museums and exhibitions you can see why painters headed for the northernmost region of the country. The recently refurbished and extended Skagens Museum with focus on the artists’ colony at the end of the 19th century; Frederikshavn Museum of Art and bookplate collection featuring a permanent exhibition of Karl Bovin; Vendsyssel Museum of Art in Hjørring, where the close link between art and the region’s characteristic landscape can be experienced in Johannes Hofmeister’s and Poul Anker Bech’s paintings; the art house in Vrå, which features Svend Engelund’s landscape paintings. Church to the east at Børglum Kloster. Christianity makes its entry A hundred years passed from AD 960, when Harald Bluetooth was converted and “made the Danes Christian”, before Christianity acquired such a foothold in the country that an Episcopal residence was established here. This took place along with the Episcopal residences in Viborg and Aarhus, with the North Jutland Episcopal residence being placed at the royal estate on the hill at Børglum. In the middle of the 12th century the Premonstratensians established a monastery at Børglum, which became the headquarters of its abbeys in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In the middle of the 13th century the same order built a convent at Vrejlev Kloster, not far from Børglum, following a decree in 1215 that the monks were not allowed to admit sisters to Børg lum. Perhaps this is the seed of the legend that Børglum Kloster CHURCHES 73 monks and nuns held nightly rendezvous via a secret underground passage, which, incidentally, has never been found. The Episcopal residence at Børglum had enormous power and wealth, with property throughout Vendsyssel, Hanherred, Thy and Mors. In the 16th century this amounted to 268 farms, 163 houses without land and 4 mills. The last Bishop of Børglum, Stygge Krumpen, was also one of the most renowned. It is said that he survived the Reformation in 1536 by hiding in the baking oven at the manor house at Sæbygård Slot. The Reformation resulted in all Episcopal Sankt Olai Church in Hjørring. Hjørring’s medieval churches Unlike the majority of royal boroughs, Hjørring was granted permission to keep its three medieval churches, in spite of religious disputes, fires, hardship and poverty. In connection with the Reformation, Sankt Catharinæ became the town’s parish church, whilst the two older churches, Sankt Hans and Sankt Olai, escaped demolition by becoming churches for the town’s two large rural parishes. The three churches are just a stone’s throw from each other – evidence of the modest size of Hjørring during the Middle Ages. Mariæ Church in Sæby. and church goods being transferred to the king. However, King Christian III “forgot” to channel this money to those tasked with assuming the duties of the church, such as running hospitals, schools and poorhouses, so times were harsh for the population. In addition, King Christian III sentenced all Vendsyssel’s peasants to death because they had stood at Skipper Clement’s side during the Count’s Feud. It was possible to pay a sum of money to ensure a stay of execution, but this of course did nothing to alleviate their destitution. Frederikshavn Church Den tilsandede Kirke in Skagen. Many fascinating churches Mariæ Church in Sæby is handsomely decorated with fresco paintings and has an impressive altar. Prior to the Reformation, the church was part of a large Carmelite monastery, which was later demolished. Just south of Skagen is the church buried in the sand – Den tilsandede Kirke – which today consists of just the tower of Sct. Laurentii Church, which had Vendsyssel’s longest nave until sand migration buried the church at the end of the 18th century. Frederikshavn Church is one of the region’s newest churches, inaugurated in 1892. It has the layout of a cross inspired by the cathedral in Achen, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and the huge Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul – they certainly didn’t lack ambition in the fast-growing royal borough! The church is Denmark’s second biggest in terms of the number of seats – 1160 of them – exceeded only by Vor Frue Church in Copenhagen, which has a capacity of 1500. Frederikshavn Church has an altarpiece painted by Skagen painter Michael Ancher which depicts Jesus’ meeting with the disciples at the Sea of Galilee following the resurrection. 74 MUSEUMS Museums bring the past to life What was life like in the past? THE BUNKERS 77 The bunkers have a fantastic history from the war The German fortification of the Danish west coast, which primarily took place from 1941 until 1944, was the biggest construction project in Denmark’s history. The Danish government insisted that the work should be carried out by Danish contractors, and at its peak the construction project employed 74,000 men. The German occupying forces acquired the money from the Danish National Bank. In modern day terms, the cost of construction is equivalent to the cost of building 12 Great Belt Bridges! The Top of Denmark was the Germans’ bridhead to Norway, and was heavily fortified from the very onset of the occupation. The Atlantic Wall was later extended from the Pyrenees to North Cape. The majority of the bunkers still exist. As one of the first sites in the area a coastal gun battery was constructed in 1940 at the 82-metre high hill of Pikkerbakken near Frederikshavn, which was later equipped with a radar station. The majority of the 70 bunkers are today accessible as Bangsbo Fort Bunker Museum. In 1941 a coastal gun battery was constructed on either side of the harbour at Hirtshals, which played an important role in German supply lines to Norway. The western battery near Hirtshals lighthouse is an open-air museum today. The headland of Skagen Odde was fortified on both the west side at Tversted and the east side at Bunken and at Grenen. Bunkers are found all the way down the west coast past Lønstrup and Løkken, in particular concentrated around the places where there was road access to the beach which the Allies would have been able to use in the event of an invasion. At the tourist office you can pick up a folder about the bunkers at the Top of Denmark. 78 LOCAL INGREDIENTS Taste the local ingredients! The Top of Denmark is one of the country’s foremost food stores. Both farming and fishing are acclaimed for their high levels of quality, and the region’s refined products find their way to restaurants and shops throughout the country and many places in Europe. LOCAL INGREDIENTS At the Top of Denmark, good ingredients can become part of your holiday in many ways. The landscape is made up of farming country with ripe cornfields, grazing dairy cattle and potatoes in rows running as straight as arrows. At the harbours you can see the fishing vessels landing their catch at the quay, where you can buy a bag of the freshest plaice. If you’re planning to cook your own food during your holiday, look for local ingredients from roadside stalls, farm shops or local markets, in addition to specialities from the local butcher, baker and fishmonger. Why not finish off with herbs, berries and mushrooms you yourself have picked in the countryside. 79 North Jutland cuisine is based on a farming culture in which the farms were more or less self-sufficient in terms of meat, dairy products and vegetables, and where many people supplemented this diet with fishing or else knew a local fisherman. The raw ingredients were therefore traditional, but of high quality, and the food was prepared with great care. Today, globalisation has brought a wealth of new ingredients into the shops, but the local ingredients and products still make up the basis of North Jutland gastronomy. As a local once said when he heard a description of New Nordic Cuisine: “Why, that’s what we eat every day”! A visit to a restaurant is a natural part of any holiday, and you’ll find that many of the restaurants in the region focus on local ingredients as part of the culinary experience. 80 LOCAL INGREDIENTS Butikken Aurion Comprehensive and well-stocked health food shop in Hjørring. As a guest you’re welcome to pick herbs and make your own aromatic schnapps – or try one of the proven recipes. It’s a great activity that provides holiday memories in a bottle. The search for herbs and berries is a great form of exercise, provides plenty of fresh air and knowledge about the wild flora in North Jutland’s lovely countryside. This is followed by lots of pleasant hours spent producing the schnapps – and then even more hours carefully adjusting the taste and serving it to your friends. Or on a dark winter evening with the wind howling around the house and the rain pattering on the windows, pick out a bottle and enjoy a small glass and let your mind drift back to the sunny day when you picked the plants. Making your own aromatic schnapps is easy. Rinse off and dry the herbs or berries you picked. Put them in a jam jar and cover with vodka or schnapps with a neutral taste such as Brøndums. After a suitable period that allows the berries and herbs to infuse, you have an essence that should be filtered through a coffee filter and poured into a bottle. The essence is highly concentrated and should be diluted with more alcohol. Taste to find the right dilution. DUNE ARO MATIC SCH NA PPS ow, 1 part sweet gale , 1 part St. Jo hn’s wort. Put yarr ow, St. John wort and sw ’s eet gale flow ers into a glass and po ur in a neut ral-tasting spirit, e.g. vodka or B røndum sc Let it infuse hnapps. for two-th ree weeks, and pour in filter to a bottle . At the Top of Denmark you’ll find yarrow, common tormentil, juniper, crowberry, blueberry, heather, hawthorn, sea wormwood, sweet gale, sea buckthorn, burnet rose, St. John’s wort and sloe. An extra element in the production of aromatic schnapps can be the search for beautiful old bottles in which to pour the essence and the final product. There are lots of interesting bottles to be found at glass-blowers, second-hand dealers and flea markets. Sea buckthorn 82 RESTAUR ANTS & CAFÉS Where shall we eat today Mealtimes on holiday are something most people look forward to. Delicious gourmet food and preferably exciting local dishes – or perhaps a tasty snack at a pavement café. The Top of Denmark is surrounded by the sea, and therefore fish and shellfish are frequently on the menu in many of the local restaurants – particularly in coastal towns, where you’ll also find dedicated seafood restaurants that speci alise in the fruits of the sea.
