V O L U M E 3 , I S S U E 4 • P R I N T E D D E C E M B E R 2 0 0 4 “Turning the Tables” to buy local! Kimber Lanning, owner of Stinkweeds Records and creator of Arizona Chain Reaction, AZCR.org, awarded Hickman’s Egg Ranch, Inc., October 2004, local business of the month. Kimber is from a family of self-employed entrepreneurs. Her Mom owns three art galleries, one brother owns a jewelry store and the other has his own Architectural firm in Tucson. In fact, they cover the state from Tucson, Tempe, Jerome, Phoenix, and Sedona. Kimber’s vision was to help foster and promote a sense of community. “People move here from places like Chicago, where they support all kinds of local business, and they wind up going to the places they are familiar with, like chain stores and restaurants, because they don’t know about what our communities have to offer. If you were having guests from out of town, where would you take them to dinner that says “Arizona”? Los Dos Molinos or Applebees?” Arizona Chain Reaction’s website can direct newcomers and natives to Arizona to locally owned businesses and services. “We don’t know our neighbors, because we are not loyal to any one grocery, café/diner, or service. We’re trying to help people get the flavor of Arizona.” Hickman’s Egg Ranch, Inc., owes its start and growth to consumers that continue to ask for the Hickman label. We should all appreciate Kimber and now many other local merchants, such as Changing Hands Bookstore, and Monti’s la Casa Vieja, for promoting the importance of supporting your local businesses. It also makes cent$! Revenues from products and services purchased by Arizona companies flood our communities with enhanced services, infrastructure, and support. If we have made you feel guilty that you don’t drink Shamrock milk, eat Hickman eggs, dessert on Cerreta Chocolate, and if you didn’t dine at Richardson’s, First Watch, TC Eggington’s, Kiss the Cook,or Monti’s Steakhouse, to name a few this past weekend, then our job is done. Kimber still “Covers” a wide range of activities. The name Stinkweeds, came from former newsman Bill Rose on Channel 5, who used to give 15 roses for things he liked and 1-5 stinkweeds for the stuff he didn’t approve of. She thought she would beat him to the punch! Our guess is that Kimber watched Channel 5 as an adult because she watched it for the Wallace and Ladmo show when she was a child. Stinkweeds' newest blossom is her second location at Central and Camelback. In a recent Phoenix Channel 11 interview, Michael Monti, of Monti’s Steakhouse, reinforced that Arizona Chain Reaction is not “Anti-Chain.” In fact, many chain stores have been very supportive of local products and services. Kimber’s back door—front entrance of her second location. In case you missed the episode of “On the Issues” dedicated to Arizona Chain Reaction that aired on channel 11 last month, a transcript of the show is now online: http://phoenix.gov/11/trd3110 4.html<http://phoenix.gov/11/t rd31104.html Our first quarter will profile Bill Hickman’s start in the egg industry. Bill Sr., found his first print story in the Canadian Poultry review, circa 1964. Congratulations to Cyntheia “Click” Brown for correctly naming the players on this Little League team photo. Stump the Eggspert Dear Mr. Hickman, I recently bought another dozen of Hickman's Eggs and had a problem with some of them. Quite a few of the eggs had a shell so fragile I could hardly handle them without the egg shells breaking. On my Grandpa's farm that meant that the chickens were not getting enough calcium in their feed. The shells were also rippled or wrinkled looking. I've been buying your eggs for a lot of years and will continue to do so. I just wanted you to know I expect better eggs when I pay the extra price for Hickman's. I have to be able to pick up the eggs without them breaking in my hand. The carton had number H-209 on it and also 25444 00022 for tracking purposes. Sincerely, Barbara Garry Eggspert Billy Hickman: Mrs. Garry Thank you for the feedback, whether good or bad its necessary to help us find what the AZ consumer is receiving. We have begun using a new molt program that feeds chickens the entire time their molting, the good aspect is they have feed in front of them at all times, the negative is they continue to lay a few eggs that have a poor shell coverage, we'll continue to make adjustments to put the best eggs in the market as possible. In addition Ex-Lg size packages Don’t worry this isn’t Santa’s Map for deliveries. Our IT wizard, Mark Stratford, provided the eggsposure for our newsletter readers.
