SPRING/SUMMER 2008 Special Donor Appreciation Issue INSIDE ■ Heart Transplant Patient and Her Family Weather Storms to Celebrate Life ■ Children’s Participates in Largest Biomedical Study in History ■ Hybrid Procedure Makes a Great First Impression D ear Friends, Donor Earl Stilson has fun with kids during the community grand opening of the Stilson Specialty Center Dr. Herman Gray, Earl Stilson and PAWS With this issue, we honor you and the more than 12,000 donors who have helped us achieve our goal of offering world-class health care for our patients at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. All of our loyal supporters and contributors are important to the success of our hospital. We are grateful for your kindness. Together we can help our children live healthier, happier lives. As a result of the generosity of many donors, the Stilson Specialty Center opened in early March to much fanfare. For the first time, families and their physicians have access to a wide variety of Children’s Hospital pediatric specialists and services in a single, pediatric-dedicated medical facility in Macomb County. The Stilson Specialty Center is unique in that during every phase of planning, we ensured that the environment would be child and family friendly, from the interior colors to the kids-only optical shop to a therapeutic rock climbing wall. This pediatric outpatient center truly is just for them. A number of outpatient children’s services and pediatric specialties are available at the new 48,000 square-foot facility including MRI, CT Scan, X-Ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, a sleep lab and specialties including gastroenterology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology/audiology, general surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, allergy, ENT, and psychology. The site will also include a pediatric optical shop and retail pharmacy. The center was made possible in part through a significant gift from Earl Stilson, a successful Macomb County businessman. The Vietnam veteran and self-made entrepreneur is a former Children’s Hospital patient and felt it was important to give back to the institution that helped him as a child. Thank you again for all you do to help us care for the children in our community. Very truly yours, Herman B. Children’s Hospital recently received one of the centers from Hollywood Entertainment and Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that offers entertainment, education and family activities that improve the quality of life of more than 220,000 children and families each month. The $4,250 Starlight Fun Center is a mobile entertainment unit that includes a Sharp AQUOS flat-screen monitor, DVD player and Nintendo Wii system. The centers can serve as a welcome diversion for patients awaiting surgery or test results, as well as those who have idle time between treatments. As part of a contest held during Black History Month in February, ColgatePalmolive and Starlight held an online contest that asked people to show their support for the hospital in their region. Children’s Hospital received the highest number of votes in the online contest and was awarded two more Fun Centers. Pictured is one of the Fun Stations that is now being used at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. BY Marti Benedetti Voting ended on Feb. 29. Children’s Hospital was the only hospital in the state taking part in the contest and one of nine nation-wide. Over 5,000 Fun Centers are now in use at more than 1,000 hospitals throughout the country. Feedback has shown that the centers are a big hit with young patients, and some caregivers even have reported a reduced need for pain medication among some children who have utilized the entertainment units. The Fun Center is a great fit at Children’s Hospital, which tries to make every patient visit as good an experience as possible. “As much as we can, we try to provide each child with an environment that’s friendly,” says Patrick Kelly, vice president of development at Children’s Hospital. “Anything we can do to alleviate that stress and fear is a wonderful addition.” 3 Detroit Landmark Gives Back to Children’s Hospital J BY Marcy Hayes im Kokas, owner of the Detroit from all private parties held at the restaudining landmark Opus One, feels rant, when the hospital is mentioned as strongly about supporting his neighthe charity of choice when making the borhood and the many non-profits reservation. Lyman, Ph.D. he scope and stakes of some scientific projects are simply staggering. For William D. Lyman, Ph.D. and thousands of other researchers across the country - opportunities don’t come any bigger or better than the National Children’s Study, which seeks to monitor environmental effects on the development of 100,000 children nationwide from birth to age 21. “It’s the largest biomedical study ever undertaken anywhere,” said Lyman, director of the Children’s Research Center of Michigan, which is based at Children’s Hospital. “The outcome will affect pediatric health care for the next 50 to 100 years.” Planning the National Children’s Study required five years and the collective brainpower of roughly 3,000 clinicians and researchers. Children’s is collaborating with Wayne State University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Henry Ford Hospital, the Michigan Department of Community Health and the by Todd Schulz Wayne County and City of Detroit health departments to tackle Michigan’s portion of the project. Together, the universities and hospitals will study 5,000 children in five counties. The first phase, funded by an $18 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, starts with 1,000 children in Wayne County in 2009. The study will progress to Genesee, Grand Traverse, Lenawee and Macomb counties, which, according to Lyman, should receive federal funding in the next two fiscal years. Under Lyman’s leadership, Children’s will serve as a repository for hundreds of thousands of research samples, including: blood, urine, umbilical cord blood, placenta, maternal breast milk, hair, and nails. Lyman and his team will collect, catalog and assure the scientific quality and integrity of every sample gathered in Michigan. He’ll also serve as lead investigator for Genesee County and help evaluate requests by fellow researchers for access to Michigan’s data. The study will examine how children are affected by a wide range of environmental influences, including toxins, infections, nutrition, growth, and family and social environment. “It’s the zenith of my academic career,” said Lyman, who also is a professor and associate chairman of pediatrics for Wayne State University as well as the Carman & Ann Adams Endowed Chair in Pediatric Research. “It’s an important legacy for Children’s to be part of this landmark study.” 5 Personal Giving Family Donates Money to Buy Rehab Equipment for Stilson Center Imaging M ary Gerardi Daiken was born in Detroit 87 years ago with some significant disadvantages. Her mother died while delivering her, and she developed a polio-like disease that made walking improbable. But she considered herself lucky because up to 19 surgeries at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the 1920s enabled her eventually to walk with a leg brace. She was raised by a kind and loving foster family – the Gerardi’s. More specifically, she became the foster child of the grandmother of Children’s Hospital chief of staff Mary Lu Angelilli, M.D. and was a part of the Gerardi family for the rest of her life. Dr. Angelilli’s aunt, Mary Gerardi LaFata, set aside some money for Daiken’s retirement years. When Daiken died on her birthday last December, the family thought about how the money could be best used. “Children’s Hospital provided her with extensive care for so many years in spite of our family’s inability to pay for her treatment. We wanted to give back,” Angelilli explains. Consequently, Dr. Angelilli and her mother Nancy Gerardi Angelilli decided to make a generous donation in tribute to Daiken to pay for rehabilitation equipment at the Stilson Specialty Center, which opened in March in Clinton Township. by Marti Benedetti “She spent most of her early childhood going between Children’s Hospital and the Farmington Convalescent Center, where many children with polio were treated at the time,” Angelilli says. “No doubt, the surgeries and rehabilitation she had back then were cutting edge.” Angelilli says Daiken learned to walk over time using a single leg brace, and was able to live a fairly normal life. She got married and had a good job even taking the bus to work daily. “But she always had my family members involved in her care.” LaFata, who lived to be 92, lived with Daiken during the last 30 years of her life. She watched out for Daiken who was a sister to her. A plaque at the Stilson Center says the rehab equipment was donated by the three Gerardi women. The center is on Garfield Road between 18 and 19 Mile roads. It was possible due to a significant gift from Earl Stilson, a successful Macomb County businessman and entrepreneur. “Everybody in our family had a sacred attitude toward Mary’s money, and now they are happy about how it will be used,” Angelilli adds. Photo courtesy of Jeff Zelevansky peration Smile is a worldwide children’s medical charity dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults born with facial deformities. Every Operation Smile volunteer learns the significance of three words during their medical mission: patience, teamwork and flexibility. For Lindsay Heering, CCLS, manager of Child Life Services at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, those traits exemplify her experience as a medical volunteer in Linyi, China. She found herself humbled by the staggering number of children hoping for a life-changing surgery and the dedication of the medical volunteers who traveled from across the globe to fulfill a stranger’s dream. On Heering’s first day, a local nurse had a translator inform her that she “wasn’t necessary.” In China, hospitals didn’t use distraction techniques before procedures or surgery and didn’t spend a lot of time with emotional support, either. Heering performed her responsibilities, and by trip’s end the local surgical team was convinced of her work’s value and learned from her. By Marcy Hayes “Operation Smile sends its volunteers a lot of information about what to pack and what to expect from their overseas trip,” says Heering, 28, “But I don’t think there are words truly to describe what a mission is like.” Her trip was part of Operation Smile’s 25th Anniversary World Journey of Smiles in November. The organization mobilized 1,700 volunteers from 44 nations in 40 mission sites in 25 countries. Their goal was to repair childhood facial deformities and build partnerships with local hospitals that result in sustainable healthcare systems. Heering’s team performed 140 cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries in four days. “Communication was a challenge. Volunteer doctors and nurses didn’t speak the same language,” she explains. Yet with charade-like signs as a common language, they managed to remain on the same page. On her surgical team, Heering learned about Italy’s culture from an anesthesiologist and enjoyed conversations with the medical records specialist from Vietnam – though she confesses that she wasn’t entirely sure what he was saying. On the down side, the accommodations weren’t exactly 4-star, the food wasn’t what she was used to, she burned through two weeks of vacation time and she even missed her first wedding anniversary. But having said that, Heering concedes, she would do it all again tomorrow. Sometimes there’s no greater reward for hard work than a simple smile. That was a good thing. After a six-month overhaul directed by the chief of orthopedic surgery, Richard Reynolds, M.D. all that was left of the old clinic was a wastebasket or two. Dr. Reynolds had moved across the country to Children’s Hospital, with the vision of re-creating the hospital’s Orthopedic Clinic, and he succeeded. Each of the 14 remodeled exam rooms in the state-of-the-art facility have a special computer, allowing parents and patients to view X-rays and other scans with their doctors. The X-rays themselves are now digital, providing better detail, and each patient in the casting area enjoys a private area. The clinic even boasts electronic games and big-screen televisions in the waiting room, welcome diversions for patients and families. The cosmetic upgrades were only the beginning of Reynold’s changes. Two orthopedic surgeons with top credentials have joined the clinic’s staff: Drs. Eric Jones and Walid Yassir. Jones had been vice chair of orthopedics at the University of West Virginia, while Yassir was chief of pediatric orthopedics at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. “The clinic is fantastic now,” says Reynolds. “We have increased our efficiency, serving almost 30 percent more children.” By Marcy Hayes Another area of pride is the video conferencing installed in the clinic’s boardroom. The hospital can host numerous doctors and medical staff for presentations without them having to be at the hospital. High-definition cameras in the operating room, controlled in the boardroom, allow conferencing doctors to view surgeries on a 50-inch plasma screen. As best Reynolds knows, Children’s Hospital may be the first children’s hospital in Michigan with this capability. While the clinic’s three doctors are handling every type of surgery, Reynolds plans to bring in additional specialists. “We all do spinal surgery, which means we are Michigan’s largest pediatric spinal surgery department,” Reynolds says. “All the upgrades and improvements demonstrate the commitment the hospital has made to the Orthopedic Clinic.” A colored glass wall and comfortable seating welcomes patients and their families. 8 Heart Transplant Patient and Her Family Weather Storms to Celebrate Life L By Marti Benedetti ife for Maria Meza and her family has not been easy. But each time the nine-year-old Maria celebrates a birthday, her parents share joy and are thankful for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. It has been a long road to get Maria to where she is now. Two weeks after their baby daughter was born, her parents Audelia Molina and Fernando Meza, noticed that something was wrong with her. She would not eat and seemed acutely uncomfortable. Maria’s parents took her to their local pediatrician who recommended she be taken quickly to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. After several tests, doctors diagnosed that Maria had a severe congenital heart defect. Surgery ensued and Maria spent the next month in the Intensive Care Unit before going back home. Eight months later, Maria returned to Children’s for a second surgery. “The second procedure was necessary because she grew,” Audelia says. A third surgery was planned for Maria but did not materialize. Instead, doctors determined Maria needed a heart transplant. Maria Meza (right) with her sister Stephanie She and her family, who had already been through several difficult months, waited a year and a half for the right heart donor. Maria was given oxygen at home and endured many hospital visits during the wait. At two and a half in 2001, Maria had the transplant. A couple weeks later while still in the hospital, she had a seizure, which is uncommon, but can sometimes occur after a transplant. The Mezas, who are Spanishspeaking, were worried their daughter would not survive. But they were reassured by the transplant team via a translator that she just needed more time to get well. Joanne Dupuis, R.N., Children’s Hospital transplant coordinator, who helped the family during Maria’s transplant and continues providing care and support today, says a breakthrough occurred one day when she and a cardiologist stepped into Maria’s hospital room. Spanish music that Audelia had put on for her daughter was playing. “Maria started singing to herself,” Dupuis says. “That’s when we knew she was getting better.” Eleven weeks later, Maria went home. The Mezas say it took about eight months for Maria to regain her strength and fully recuperate. “When we first met Maria, she was never a happy baby,” says Dupuis who helped the family during Maria’s transplant. “She was a grumpy kiddo because, I imagine, she felt horrible most of the time. “Since the transplant, she’s become a happy kid,” adds Dupuis. In addition to the transplant team, 9 Maria’s care was managed by the critical care doctors and neurosurgical team. In complex cases such as Maria’s, it is essential that the highly skilled medical and nursing professionals collaborate to provide the multi-faceted care needed. Henry Walters, M.D., chief of the department of cardiovascular surgery at Children’s Hospital and a professor of surgery at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, says Children’s Hospital performs about six to ten heart transplants a year with excellent results. “Young transplant patients have a 70 percent or better chance of surviving ten years or more. “By survival, I mean that roughly 30 percent will die after ten years or require re-transplantation,” he says. He adds that children with congenital heart disease are sometimes developmentally delayed compared with children not born with heart disease. “Most, however, live very normal lives,” Walters says. Today, Maria is a first grader who is experiencing some developmental delays. However, like other young people her age, she enjoys watching Dora the Explorer and Max & Ruby on Nick Jr. She also enjoys school, art projects and playing computer games with her little sister, Stephanie. The Mezas continue to look to the staff at Children’s Hospital for guidance and encouragement. Audelia and Fernando, who came to Detroit from a town in central Mexico in 1997, say that Maria loves being photographed and is often rewarded for going through necessary medical procedures with getting her picture taken. “We enjoy the present and live in the present with Maria,” Audelia says, adding that advancements in medical technology could make a world of difference in Maria’s longevity. Maria Meza loves being photographed. Sarnaik, M.D. early 60 years ago, a tiny peanut lodged in the left lung of a toddler in India. The boy’s lung became Firsts infected and, without surgery, his chances of surviving into adulthood were slim. Enter a visiting doctor from Denmark who removed the lung, healed the boy and, though he couldn’t have known it, inspired an epic career. The boy’s name was Ashok Sarnaik. And immediately following his lifesaving surgery, he vowed to become a doctor – a decision that forever improved thousands of children’s lives. “I knew I was going to be a pediatrician in elementary school,” said Dr. Sarnaik, co-chief of the Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and professor of pediatrics at Wayne State University. “That was my major motivation. I wanted to be a doctor.” By Todd Schulz Mission accomplished. Sarnaik, who has worked at Children’s since 1971, recently won the prestigious Distinguished Career Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He accepted the honor in October at the organization’s national conference in San Francisco. Sarnaik was especially proud because the award traditionally goes to doctors from well-known hospitals on the East and West coasts. He took the recognition as a sign of Detroit’s rising profile. “I don’t consider it an award I necessarily got,” Sarnaik, said. “But all the teachers, students and everyone associated with this hospital… it’s for all of us.” As a pediatric critical care specialist, Sarnaik treats children of any age who face a wide range of life-threatening illnesses. “Ashok is an outstanding pediatrician because he is caring and compassionate. He knows no boundaries when it comes to treating the children under his watchful eye. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan is a better place because of him. He is a treasure,” said Herman B. Gray, M.D., M.B.A., president, Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Over the years, Sarnaik had several chances to leap to other hospitals. He stayed at Children’s because of its tradition and commitment of helping children throughout the state and around the world. “In my 37 years at Children’s, this place has never wavered from its mission,” Sarnaik said. Sarnaik, 62, plans to continue practicing “as long as I have the fulfillment and satisfaction I continue to have. That sort of makes me deal with some of the inevitable disappointments.” \ / | 13 Awards Dedicated Children’s Leader Receives Distinguished Volunteer Award W hen Jane Iacobelli greets families at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s admitting department, she Firsts understands exactly what nervous patients and anxious parents are feeling. That’s because, nearly 40 years ago, Iacobelli stood in their place. She’ll never forget walking into Children’s with her then 3-year-old son, who was eventually diagnosed and successfully treated for mixed connective tissue disease. “I remember being frightened,” Iacobelli said. “My child was sick. I was alone and I’d never been to Children’s Hospital. But the people were so wonderful and kind. I always felt I’d go back and give back.” Did she ever. Iacobelli started volunteering at Children’s in 1983 and simply hasn’t stopped. In addition to working Fridays in the admitting and surgical areas, she’s served on the hospital’s board of trustees since 1989, helped organize the Festival of Trees and still works with the hospital’s Auxiliary. As a result, Iacobelli recently received the Distinguished Volunteer Award from the Association Mario and Jane Iacobelli’s grandson, of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Jackson Crockett Greater Detroit Chapter. The award, which honors volunteers and donors for exemplary performance, was presented at a special ceremony celebrating National Philanthropy Day. By Todd Schulz “I’m doing it for love and I don’t need a reward,” Iacobelli said. “But to receive a reward, that meant a lot to me because I like the people [at Children’s] so much.” As a trustee, Iacobelli helps make big decisions at Children’s. But she cherishes even more the personal interaction with people who come to Children’s seeking help. She reports to the admitting department at 5:45 a.m. on Fridays and helps patients and parents get settled physically and emotionally before surgeries. “I have to feel it out and do what’s best for them,” she said. “I try to make them comfortable. The parents of a child who’s having tonsils out are sometimes as stressed as the parents of a child having heart surgery.” Iacobelli and her husband, Mario, split their time between homes in Michigan and Arizona and often visit their children – Peter and Jeanne – and four grandchildren in Utah. Though she loves representing Children’s where ever she goes, Iacobelli hops on a plane the instant she’s needed at the hospital. Iacobelli plans to volunteer “as long as I physically and mentally can. I have such a passion for it. I’m very appreciative of the hospital being there when I needed them. That’s why it’s so important to me to be there when other people need us.” \ / | Mario and Jane Iacobelli enjoy the holidays with their grandchildren Charlie, Cooper and Cameron Iacobelli. 14 Marie Louise Bodman Leaves Children’s Hospital a Lasting Legacy M Marie Louise Bodman arie Louise McMillan Bodman was a precious gift to her family, friends and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. So it was fitting that she was born on Christmas Day. Mrs. Henry Bodman, known as “Weezie,” to those close to her, lived her life with energy and enthusiasm. She was a quintessential volunteer active in many community groups. But she was also a very contemporary woman, taking up in-line skating later in life. For more than five decades, Mrs. Bodman served faithfully as a member of the Children’s Hospital board. Her leadership and vision were instrumental in the hospital becoming the premiere pediatric health care facility it is today. By Marcy Hayes She served on several committees and worked tirelessly in the late 60’s to secure major philanthropic support from our community to construct a new Children’s Hospital – which is the hospital’s current location today. “Consistent with her history of selfless support, Weezie will continue to improve children’s lives,” said John D. Baker, M.D., Children’s Hospital board of trustees chair. Mrs. Bodman passed away peacefully in her Grosse Pointe home Jan. 29 at the age of 98. Memorial tributes to The Mrs. Henry T. Bodman Endowment Fund will support pediatric medical research and continue Mrs. Bodman’s legacy. To support the Mrs. Henry T. Bodman Endowment Fund, contact the Development Office at (313) 745-5873. Dear Friends, Throughout the history of the world, philanthropy has played an important role in filling the needs of communities. The giving of many individuals has been vital to the success of these communities. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan is a community focused on the health and well being of children not just from our region, but throughout the world. Philanthropy makes a difference in the quality of care we extend to children. Philanthropy fuels research that can find cures for illnesses. It provides equipment which aids physicians in performing cuttingedge surgeries. It helps families get the care they need in their own neighborhoods. Although many Michigan residents are struggling during these tough economic times, more than 12,000 people chose to provide philanthropic support to the hospital in 2007. That number says a great deal about the significant position Children’s holds as the first and most experienced pediatric hospital in Michigan and the trust you place in our team. Through your philanthropic support of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, you have made a great difference in the lives of many children. We thank you for your support and are grateful for your continued commitment. Sincerely, John D. Baker, M.D. Chairman of the Board 15 Children’s Hospital “Clowns on Call” Rose Grier, Annettee “Babycakes” Neuman and Sharon Wilcox Volunteer Spotlight Clowns On Call Proves Laughter is Good Medicine I f one clown is good, reasoned Annette “Babycakes” Newman, wouldn’t two clowns be better? And why stop there? In Memorium How about a platoon of clowns? A flock? A flotilla? Thus was born Clowns on Call, a growing troupe of red-nosed volunteers who roam from room to room each week, eliciting giggles from the patients of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Newman, a volunteer from Waterford, came to Children’s Hospital after only a few years of clowning around. She says it all began when she ran into a character called Dan the Balloon Man at a suburban restaurant, where he was entertaining guests by creating balloon animals. “Dan told me about a 9-week Clown School in Livonia, taught by a husband and wife,” Newman said. Intrigued by the idea of making strangers laugh, she signed up. Armed with a newfound knowledge in make-up, balloon sculpture and simple magic – but alas, no facility with juggling – she took her skills and fondness for fun to Children’s Hospital. But after a while, being the only clown didn’t feel right. Newman and fellow clown, Rose “Rose Petal” Grier had started crafting BY Marcy Hayes their own manual on how to clown in a hospital setting. With few classrooms or books to learn the special nuances hospital clowns need to know, Babycakes and Rose Petal hoped to help encourage others, those who have never clowned before as well as seasoned pros. Clowns on Call found the Boston Hospital Clown Troupe and the hospital brought them in to share their expertise. “They are the best,” says Newman. “We were excited to find they had written a manual, and it’s great.” Children’s Hospital’s clowns learned about their experiences and got tips on approaching and engaging the children. Newman continues to seek out clown classes she can share with her group; she wants Clowns on Call to be the best! “My ultimate dream is to train with Patch Adams,” said Newman, “and work in a third-world country.” She’s making up the process as she goes along, which only makes sense: When you wear size 28 shoes, anything is possible. (lower right) – WOMC’s Big Al Muskavito, Ross Mathews, WOMC’s morning show host and Children’s Trustee Dick Purtan benefiting from the Charity Preview at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Each year for the past 32, children’s charities from metropolitan Detroit have benefited from the Charity Preview, a prestigious and nationally recognized event that is the official kick-off for the NAIAS. Since 1976, the black-tie gala has raised $77 million to benefit children’s charities and the great work that they do in Metro Detroit communities. The 2008 Charity Preview held a number of surprises for its attendees, including a visit from Ross Mathews, known as Ross the Intern to fans of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. As a special guest of Children’s Hospital, Mathews brought his quirky, fun-loving interviewing style to the party, chatting with some of the evening’s top talent as well as a number of the other 15,000 guests. Light-hearted alternative rock band The Barenaked Ladies performed to a sold-out crowd after first singing on the red carpet as dignitaries cut a ceremonial ribbon to start the party. The group’s concert capped the evening and included By Marcy Hayes many of its top hits, giving the Detroit Auto Dealers Association – which manages the auto show – a hit of its own. The Detroit Auto Show began in 1907 and in 1989 was renamed the North American International Auto Show in recognition of its maturity to international status. The 2008 show celebrated the 20th anniversary of the auto show becoming a truly international event. Today, the NAIAS is ranked among the top international auto shows in the world and is one of the largest media events in North America. Over 6,000 media representatives from across the globe make the annual trip to Detroit to report on the auto industry’s unveilings of their newest products. Always a hot ticket, the Charity Preview is regarded as one of the most high-profile fundraising events in the nation, attended by entertainers, celebrity athletes, government officials, and local and national notables. Champagne-sipping patrons stroll the aisles and along the way visit with their colleagues, spot a celebrity or other luminaries, check out the fashion statements, and see the latest and greatest in new products that the global industry has to offer. It’s an event that will continue to be successful every year. It’s for our kids. 17 Tanith and Ben: Home for the Holidays A nyone who’s battled cancer knows 7%2495)/0Z\ it’s never smooth skating. $&'(*+,-."6#8:sr sr|¨zy ¢ That’s why Olympic ice _ skaters Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto decided to lend a hand last December by hosting a benefit performance for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Belbin and Agosto, who both grew up in the Detroit area, won the silver medal in ice dancing at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy, and recently captured their fifth consecutive U.S. title. But for all their fame, they haven’t forgotten their hometown – or its hospitals. The duo skated two “Home for the Holidays” shows on Dec. 22 at Plymouth’s Compuware Arena, drawing about 2,000 spectators to each performance. The cause was personal for Belbin, who lost two grandparents to cancer. “To create an event with the purpose of supporting the goals of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the Karmanos Institute was such an honor for us, especially with these organizations so close to home,” she said. “We felt that we needed to bring a more localized awareness to them, as they do so much for the people of our community who have been affected by cancer.” Belbin and Agosto, who train at the Arctic Edge ice rink in Canton, weren’t alone. They were joined by several skating stars – including Olympic champion Oksana Baiul and reigning U.S. men’s champion Evan Lysacek – and dozens of local skaters. By Todd Schulz The two-hour show was filled with holiday numbers featuring seasonal music and costumes. Santa Claus and snowmen even strapped on skates. “It’s for such an important cause, and it’s something we feel so good about doing,” Agosto told the Detroit Free Press. “This time of year, it’s important to think about community. This day and age, everybody is so isolated individually that it’s nice to do something with the skating community that’s for the community.” If you missed the performance, don’t worry. It likely wasn’t the last time Belbin and Agosto will return “Home for the Holidays.” The duo is already making plans to host more than two shows in December 2008, said Carmen Giacinti of Edge Marketing & Management. She witnessed it In Memorium firsthand while watching 40 of her Enchanté art students create small clay vases, pots and bowls, each intent on making their pieces special. The pottery was not for their mothers. In fact, after the projects were glazed and fired, the students wouldn’t see their work again. Young patients at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan would be the recipients of the small tokens as part of a program Love calls Hands-to-Heart. Three hundred pounds of clay, 560 ounces of glaze and under-glaze and more than 400 hours of creative labor went into this first year’s program. As she taught the concepts of color and composition, Love also spoke with her students about the children at the hospital. It seemed to resonate with the young artists; they were excited about doing something kind for others. “They put so much heart into their work,” says Love. “Many of them described what kind of child should get their pieces.” One quiet young girl rolled out coils of clay and then used them to create the words By Marcy Hayes “Love, Joy, Hope and Peace” inside four bowls. “She is a very quiet child, but clearly had something to say,” Love says. “Most all of the potters gave a lot of thought to their work.” Seeing how much it meant to the students really affected Love. “They chose to miss sports games and practices, and even birthday parties,” she explains, with a slight quiver in her voice. “The children were so excited to receive these gifts,” said Children’s Child Life Project Specialist Deanna Scanlon. The students’ parents were grateful for the opportunity their children had to learn about giving. They felt very blessed to have ablebodied, healthy children. Three of the participants had a family member that had once been a patient at Children’s Hospital. Later, when one little artist wondered whether “my bowl made the little girl better,” Love couldn’t help but smile and say yes. “It made me, a big girl, better as well.” Madisyn Schultz and Gabrielle Brua enjoy making pottery for Children’s Hospital patients. Brianne Pangrazzi shapes her piece with lots of care. 20 Kids Helping Kids Named Endowments Thank You for Your Gifts Y our commitment to supporting the mission of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is a true gesture of community leadership that enables the hospital to provide the highest quality care to thousands of children each year. Philanthropy allows us to perform cutting-edge research aimed at improving child health while educating medical professionals in the art of caring for young people. Your gifts are deeply appreciated and directly impact the lives of children who benefit from pediatric focused health programs. Several endowments have been established for the benefit of patients at Children’s Hospital. Endowment funds are created with a minimum gift of $50,000 and are acknowledged at the giving level of the donor who initiated the fund or the value of the principal of the fund, whichever is greater. A portion of the earned income provides annual support for programs and services vital to the patients in our care; the remaining income is reinvested to build the principal, creating a lasting legacy for the benefit of generations to come.
