As a person climbs to higher elevations the air becomes thinner. Here in the Vail Valley the amount of oxygen in the air is 30% less than that of sea level and the humidity is 50% less. With figures like this, most visitors to the valley can expect some degree of change. Symptoms of High Altitude Syndrome can range from restlessness, to shortness of breath, coughing, dizziness, headaches, and increases in heart rate. These symptoms can be dangerous but are usually easy to avoid. How does one avoid the symptoms? Make sure you are well rested prior to your arrival in the mountains. People who are already fatigued and/or have cold symptoms are at much greater risk. On arrival in the valley, rest appropriately and don’t over exert yourself. Allow one or two days for your body to adjust before you engage in heavy activity. Avoid alcohol if possible, it only serves to dehydrate you, as does caffeine. You should drink 40 to 50% more fluids than you would at sea level. The low humidity and decreased oxygen makes dehydration a common health problem. If you are over the age of 35 and planning strenuous exercise it would be wise to consult your doctor prior to your arrival. Do not hesitate to contact a doctor if your symptoms seem to worsen during your stay in Beaver Creek. (See listings on the following page). Sunburn The sun’s ultraviolet rays are much stronger at this altitude and are made even more so by the fact that they reflect off of the snow. You can become seriously burned within 20 minutes if you do not use sunblock. Coat both your face and lips with a sunscreen of spf 15 or higher. Apply your sunscreen after every second or third run when skiing. Don’t forget to wear proper eye protection year round. If you do burn or blister don’t hesitate to call the Beaver Creek Medical Center at (970) 949-0800. Frostbite Frostbite can become a big concern in the winter. To protect against it layer up. Never go out without a gaiter or scarf to protect your face and a hat or headband for your ears. If you do experience frostbite Do Not Rub It! Slowly warm the affected area in lukewarm water. Call a physician, especially if the frostbite has affected a large area. Nosebleeds The harder you exercise at lower humidities the more the membranes in your nose dry up, thus causing bleeding. You can help prevent it by putting a small amount of Vaseline in your nostrils each morning and night, and maintaining an increased fluid intake. **This information was provided by the Beaver Creek Medical Center located in Strawberry Park at the base of chair lift #12 24 HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION Beaver Creek Medical Center (Winter only) (970) 949-0800 HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION The Beaver Creek Medical Center is located in the Strawberry Park building at the base of chair lift #12 (Strawberry Park Express). In 1882 he laid claim to a quiet piece of land beside a small brook called Beaver Creek. By the close of the millennium, his small piece of heaven had become a year-round vacation paradise. He could not have imagined that the valley he looked out on from his porch window would eventually become a hub for the international skiing community. George, his wife Allie (for which Allie’s Cabin is named), and child were truly the first family of Beaver Creek, and their hospitality to travelers was renowned. In 1883 a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News had this to say about the couple. -Fifteen miles from Rock Creek, at the junction of Beaver Creek with the Eagle, G.A. Townsend, a pioneer ranchman, has a comfortable place where the casual traveler is welcome to stay, while the lady of the house furnishes the best the place affords. As this is the last stopping place between Red Cliff and Carbonate, a note should be made of it by anyone intending to go soon. The Townsends moved away in 1898, leaving behind them the foundations for a new generation of settlers. These settlers of Avon and Beaver Creek were ranchers and farmers by trade, but more often than not, raising livestock and growing vegetables wouldn’t pay all the bills. As a result, many men worked the Gilman mines up past Minturn (then a thriving railroad town) to sustain their families throughout the long winter months. Some of the most colorful residents were bachelors like Frank Bienkowski of Beanos Cabin®, Rial Oxford and Jack Scott, once described as “a cross between a barbed wire fence and a coyote.” In the early twenties Beaver Creek experienced a brief period of prosperity when the population began to farm mass quantities of lettuce, a product which grew amazingly large and crisp at high altitudes. The Nottingham family had owned a homestead in Avon since 1887 and survived the hard times that resulted when profits from “green gold” dried up in 1929. By the 1950’s they had consolidated most of Avon, Beaver Creek, and nearby Bachelor Gulch into one large, family operated, ranch. Known to be a hard working bunch, the Nottinghams took pride in their land and in their way of life. In 1956, a young man by the name of Pete Seibert showed interest in buying the Nottingham ranch land to build a ski resort. The Nottinghams refused. Disappointed but still determined to build, Pete set his sights on a mountain eight miles east of Beaver Creek. That mountain is now one of the world’s premier ski resorts, Vail. Despite Vail’s success, Seibert still longed to build what he envisioned as an international ski village in Beaver Creek. Opportunity was about to knock. In May 1970 the International Olympic Organizing Committee selected Denver as the host city for the 1976 winter games. The committee began to scour the state for possible sites to host alpine skiing and Beaver Creek made their short list. Seibert, along with other enthusiasts, began working on plans to build a ski mountain and subsequent village on Nottingham and Forest Service property. In the early 1970s, Willis Nottingham finally agreed to sell Seibert an option on his land. This sale of ranching land effectively ended nearly a century-old way of life in Eagle County and marked the beginning of modern-day Beaver Creek. In 1972, Colorado taxpayers surprised the world by voting not to host the 1976 Winter Games in Colorado. Despite this setback, on December 15, 1980 Beaver Creek officially opened with four chair lifts, 28 runs, 425 ski able acres, and an award winning restaurant, Spruce Saddle. Today Beaver Creek Mountain has almost quadrupled in size to more than 1,815 ski able acres, 25 lifts and 149 runs. Beaver Creek Resort boasts a world class performing arts theatre and cultural center, a unique outdoor ice rink in the heart of the village, exceptional restaurants, a variety of shops, an award-winning golf course, first-class lodges, and a flavor all its own. Yet, nature still finds a way to remind us of the past. The beavers that gave the resort its name still occasionally scurry along the river banks, impervious to their surroundings, the Rockies still glimmer with white powder covered peaks, and the people still come to witness the natural majesty of a place called Beaver Creek. By Kimberley D. Smith - Kimberley literally “grew up” with Beaver Creek after her parents became proprietors of a shop in the resort in 1986. Our thanks to historian Frank Doll for his editorial assistance. 26 INFORMATION RESOURCES INFORMATION RESOURCES The Beaver Creek Resort Information Center (970) 754-4636 The desk assists guests and homeowners of the resort in planning their activities while at the resort. Pack casual, simple, and comfortable clothes and you are just about done. To make sure your visit is enjoyable, here are a few more clothing suggestions. Playing During The Day A good rule throughout the year is plan to layer your clothing. The weather can change quickly and dramatically in the mountains, and dressing in layers allows you to add or subtract warmth as needed. For a summer hike, you may want to start out early in the morning with lightweight wind pants over shorts, a T-shirt, a cotton sweater, and a lightweight jacket. By noon, all you may want are the T-shirt and shorts! Wind pants over a swimsuit are also practical for a raft trip as they dry fast and protect against wind and sun. Jeans are not recommended for raft trips because they take so long to dry. Fleece vests and jackets are very popular throughout the year because they are lightweight, warm, and versatile. Sturdy, comfortable shoes, such as hiking boots or walking shoes are always important, even if all you plan to do during your visit is shop. Don’t forget a hat. In the mountains you are much closer to the sun! In the winter, add more layers, such as long underwear, and wear heavier layers. Outerwear that is water repellent is especially important during the winter, particularly your shoes. Your shoes should also provide good traction against icy surfaces. Dressing For A Festive Evening Ken Redding/Vail Resorts Sometimes you hear the term “Mountain Elegance” used to describe how people “dress up” in the mountains. Whatever does that mean? Perhaps “casual but polished” is another way of putting it. To make an evening special, you might want to wear an extra nice sweater, or a great silk shirt, but it’s rare to see a man in a tie or a woman in high heels in even the most upscale restaurant in Beaver Creek. It is also important to remember that evenings in the mountains can be COLD-even in the summer! If you prefer to wear a favorite, special outfit when attending an outdoor concert, ballet, or dinner on the mountain, don’t forget a warm coat, warm and safe footwear, and a blanket (for wrapping around you during the concert). In short, clothing for your visit to Beaver Creek Resort should be comfortable and practical. After all, you’re on vacation! 49 WORSHIP WORSHIP The Beaver Creek Chapel The Chapel at Beaver Creek is a unique and very beautiful addition to the resort. Designed to compliment the grove of balsam poplar trees it is nestled in, it has received awards for its architecture. Several local congregations use the Beaver Creek Chapel for regular worship, representing various faith traditions. Its design, particularly through the symbolism of flowing water, enables each congregation to worship in its distinctive fashion. The Chapel is used appropriately for recitals and concerts by many renowned musicians and hosts many summer and winter weddings. Religious Services The Beaver Creek Chapel offers year round worship services for people of many denominations.
