Its existence was known only to local farmers for hundreds of years, until 1911 when American archaeologist Hiram Bingham reported on a ‘Lost City of the Inca’, writing that “Surprise followed surprise until there came the realization that we were in the midst of as wonderful ruins as any ever found in Peru”. This trip will follow in the footsteps of pioneering 20th century explorers. You will leave the bustling colonial town of Cuzco, wind through quiet tracks in the shadows of the High Andes, to the spectacular ruins of the ancient city of Machu Picchu. The 6-day Salkantay trek was named as one of the 25 Best Treks in the World by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine, and takes the traveller through steamy rainforest, High Andean peaks and epic Peruvian landscapes. By familiarising yourself with the contents of this pre-departure pack, you will be ready and prepared for what lies ahead, not only giving yourself the best chance of reaching Machu Adventure Fact File: Country: Distance: Duration: Group size: Registration fee: Peru 70km 17 days 40 places 295 GBP (245 GBP with student discount) Fundraising: Rare Adventures Ltd 23 Hand Court London WC1V 6JF 3050 GBP with flights 2050 GBP tour only www.rareadventures.co.uk info@rareadventures.co.uk +44(0)20 347 55009 Challenge Events 2015 Trek Machu Picchu with Childreach International 4: FACT FILE Country Fact File: Country: Capital: Population: Currency: Exchange rate: Language: Peru Lima 30.4 million Nuevo sol (PEN) £1 / 4.5 PEN* Spanish * at time of writing ITINERARY The itinerary for your event is below. This beautiful town has a fascinating history. It was once the capital of the Inca Empire, and is home to some well preserved colonial architecture. It is the present-day centre of the indigenous Quechua culture. Depending on your arrival time, there will be a briefing and equipment check. The rest of the day can be spent exploring Cuzco and acclimatizing to the altitude of 3400m. DAY 2 Today will be spent relaxing in Cuzco, acclimatising to the altitude. This is an important part of the trip, as it will allow your body to cope better at the higher altitudes on later days of the trek. You will have the chance to change money and pick up some last-minute essentials. There will be an optional tour to the Sacred Valley, before returning for dinner at the hotel. DAY 3 Today we will start early, and after breakfast will transfer to Marcojasa. From here we will start our hike, following the path along an ancient aqueduct to Soraypampa. En route, we will stop for picnic lunch and the chance to fully admire the spectacular Andean scenery. Depending on our pace, we will arrive into camp at Soraypampa (3850m) in the late afternoon. Here we will have dinner, and rest our legs (no doubt aching after our first day’s proper walking!). Rare Adventures Ltd 23 Hand Court London WC1V 6JF www.rareadventures.co.uk info@rareadventures.co.uk +44(0)20 347 55009 Challenge Events 2015 Trek Machu Picchu with Childreach International 6: ITINERARY DAY 4 Today will be an acclimatisation day – climbing high, and sleep low to give our bodies the chance to adjust to the altitude. After breakfast, we will ascend from our campsite in Soraypampa, up to a beautiful, secluded lake at the base of the Humantay Glacier (4200m). We will then descend back to camp for lunch, before a 2 hour trek onwards to Salktantaypampa (4100m). DAY 5 After an early breakfast, we will start the most challenging day of our trek. Today’s route will take us along the Salkantay Mountain Pass, reaching a maximum altitude of 4650m. The effort will be rewarded with unbeatable views of the sacred mountain Nevado Salkantay. The mountain is known as “Sallqa” in Quechua, meaning ‘savage’ or ‘invincible’. We will stop for lunch at the high point of the pass, before making a slow descent to camp at Collpampa (2600m). DAY 6 After breakfast, we will continue along the ancient pathway down the Santa Teresa Valley, stopping for lunch at Lucmabamba. After lunch, we continue our descent through cloud forest to our campsite at Lucma (2180m). From this camp, we will have amazing views over the coffee plantations and fruit trees which spring from the rich soil of the region. Rare Adventures Ltd 23 Hand Court London WC1V 6JF www.rareadventures.co.uk info@rareadventures.co.uk +44(0)20 347 55009 Challenge Events 2015 Trek Machu Picchu with Childreach International 7: ITINERARY DAY 7 Following an early breakfast, we will descend down into the Aobamba Valley. The hydroelectric dam is a short hike away, and once there we will sign into Machu Picchu national park. We will trek along semi-jungle, following rail tracks, stopping for lunch en-route. After 3 hours, we will reach Aguas Calientes (2050m) at the base of Machu Picchu. Here we can take a dip in the thermal springs which give the town its name, before dinner - an essential experience! DAY 8 This is it! After a very early breakfast in the dark, we will set off for Machu Picchu, following the light of our head torches. After a steep ascent of the Machu Picchu mountain (2700m), we will arrive in time for a spectacular sunrise over the ruins site. We will have a guided tour of Machu Picchu, before returning to town for a hot lunch. We will take a train back to Cuzco, arriving in the mid-evening for hot showers and a celebratory dinner. DAY 9 - 15 If you are on our flights inclusive option, you can further explore Peru on one of our trip extensions. Visit the Mysterious Nazca Lines, dip your toes in the Amazon, or catch some waves on the pristine beaches of Mancora it’s up to you! Everyone who takes part in the Machu Picchu Salkantay Route Trek should be comfortable walking for long periods. Preferably, you should also be comfortable walking 6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack. You will walk every step of the way from Marcojasa to Machu Picchu, and back again - over uneven, steep terrain. The Salkantay trek is like a marathon, not a sprint! This climb is about endurance, and you must be comfortable walking 6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack. By preparing the muscles used for trekking, you will recover quicker at the end of each day, and wake up with less aches & pains. There are no direct flights to Cuzco from the UK. Most itineraries will require a change in Lima or one of the major South American hubs such as La Paz or Sao Paulo. Many airlines will offer a through-ticket to Cuzco on a codeshare – meaning you will fly with multiple airlines. Be aware that you may need to pick up your luggage and check it in again before boarding your flight to Cuzco. Ensure your itinerary leaves plenty of time for this on the way in and home. Regardless of which option you chose, we recommend you book your flights no later than 3 months before the start of your climb. Some routes can sell out quickly, meaning prices increase sharply - especially during peak trekking season. Expected cost of flights: 600 - 900 GBP GETTING TO THE HOTEL If you are arriving at around the same time as the team, you can join the transfer to the team hotel in Cuzco. If you are arriving before or after the team, you will need to arrange onwards transport. Taxi: The team hotel is in Central Cuzco, around 4.5km from the airport. The trip will cost around 5—10 Soles (1—2GBP). Always agree a price for the trip before getting into the taxi. You can also pre-book taxis in Cuzco using Taxi Datum (http://taxidatum.com). Provide your flight arrival times and a driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals gate. Be aware that this can be more expensive than arranging one at the airport. Bus: A regular service runs from the airport to Central Cuzco. Leave the airport via the main exit, and turn left. Wait for bus C4M, which takes around 30 minutes to reach the city centre and stops in front of the Church of San Pedro. Alternatively, you can pre-book a shuttle service via Cusco Shuttle (https://www.cuscoshuttle.com). Once booked, they will wait for you outside the arrivals terminal holding a sign with your name. PLEASE NOTE If you are booking your own flights, your services with Rare Adventures will start when you arrive at the team hotel on day 2, and end on day 10 of the itinerary. You are responsible for making your own way to the hotel, and to the airport to catch your flight home. Rare Adventures will not be able to offer support outside of period of service, and it is your responsibility to ensure you have correctly booked flights and transfers. This helps to minimize costs to the charity, and ensure the maximum amount of fundraising goes to the cause you want to support. Passengers travelling on a group ticket must all depart and return on the same date. If you wish to stay in country for longer, return early, or arrive early, then you should opt to book your own flights. SWITCHING GROUPS In some circumstances, it may be necessary for you to switch groups. We will always try to minimize any costs incurred as a result of this, however if we need to secure extra flights or additional accommodation there may be unavoidable fees. Also, please note that if you switch groups your original flight preference will be carried over unless you request to change this option. The Machu Picchu Salkantay route is a moderately challenging trek, following an established route, with sections spent at altitude. We advise that all clients have experience of hill walking in the UK, and are comfortable walking for up to 7 hours per day with a 5-10kg pack. It is crucial that you bring some worn-in trekking boots. HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE? All participants should be in very good physical condition, preferably able to run for 6km at a reasonable pace. You will spend prolonged periods at altitude during the climb, and the effects of this are not be underestimated. We allow for plenty of time to acclimatize, however we do recommend you consult with your GP if you are unsure. All participants with pre-existing medical conditions will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire with their GP. DO I NEED ANY SPECIALIST KIT? The right kit can be the difference between an enjoyable trek, and one that ends early. Take a look at the kit list in this brochure for more details on the gear we recommend. Selected items are available for hire. WILL I NEED ANY VACCINES? Current NHS advice is to update primary courses & boosters required for life in Britain. Vaccinations against hepatitis A, tetanus & typhoid are also recommended, While Cuzco & Macchu Picchu are not high-risk areas for Malaria, those intending to travel further afield in Peru should consider a course of antimalarials. For more information see: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR THIS EXPEDITION? All transfers and accommodation in the itinerary are included, along with all meals in Cuzco & during the trek. You will need personal spending money for souvenirs & alcoholic drinks, plus your tips for the crew, extra snacks, and any additional travel you take part in. We recommend somewhere between 250GBP and 500GBP. CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS? You are able to book a land-only expedition through Rare Adventures, and meet the team in Cuzco before the trek. There are no direct flights from the UK to Cuzco, with most itineraries involving a transfer via Lima. Rare Adventures Ltd 23 Hand Court London WC1V 6JF www.rareadventures.co.uk info@rareadventures.co.uk +44(0)20 347 55009 Challenge Events 2015 Trek Machu Picchu with Childreach International 19: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE? At altitude, your body burns far more calories than at sea level, combined with the distances trekked each day, your body will require more calories than usual. During the trek, we will have a dedicated cook with the team, who will prepare fresh meals 3 times a day. Your meals will be high in carbs & calories, and will be a mix of traditional Peruvian meals made with local ingredients, and other more international dishes. If you have any specific dietary requirements, our team can cater for this. When signing up, you can specify your individual needs and the cooks will adjust your individual menu accordingly. Before and after the trek, you will have the chance to sample some of the flavours of the Quechua region in some of Cuzco’s many restaurants and cafes. WHAT WEATHER SHOULD I EXPECT? As with all mountain regions, the only thing predictable about the weather of the Andes is that it is unpredictable! Will temperatures will generally be warm and humid over the summer months, it is not unusual to experience 4 seasons in one day! Generally speaking, shorts and a light shirt will be suitable while trekking during the day, with warmer clothes needed for the evening, when temperatures drop. HOW MANY GUIDES AND CREW WILL THERE BE? The group will be accompanied at all times by our head guide, who will have overall command of the expedition. There will also be a team of assistant guides, muleteers and the team cook. At all times during the trek there will be a ratio of 1 guide to every 8 clients. This will ensure that if anyone needs to walk at a different pace, or feels unwell, there will always be someone on hand to assist. WHAT PAPERWORK DO I NEED? British nationals do not require a visa to enter Peru for tourism purposes, and can remain in the country for up to 6-months on this basis. If you intend to enter Peru independently from any neighbouring countries, please review the entry requirements at: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/peru/entryrequirements. Nationals of other countries should review the latest travel advice from your national consulate. WILL I NEED TO CARRY MY BAGS DURING THE TREK? During trekking days, you will carry a day pack, containing water, camera, snacks and any personal items. Our mule team will carry your large bags by day, and drop these off at your tent each evening. Salkantay National Park has very basic infrastructure. You will be camping each night on along the trek, with no access to mains power. We recommend trying to conserve camera battery, and saving that last bit of juice in your MP3 player for the climb to the citadel. You can also buy a solar charger, which may provide some extra power. Bear in mind that the cold temperatures at higher altitudes will drain your batteries much faster than at sea level, so try to carry your personal electronic in an inside pocket to keep them warm. CAN I SHOWER OR WASH CLOTHES DURING THE CLIMB? Facilities will be basic during the trek, so we recommend packing some baby wipes to freshen up along the way. At camp each morning you will be provided with a bowl of warm water for washing, and clean water for brushing your teeth. Dirty clothes can be washed back at the hotel in Cuzco. WHERE CAN I GET CASH OR CHANGE MONEY? You can withdraw cash from one of the many ATMs in Cuzco. Please remember that your bank may charge a transaction fee on this, sometimes as much as 5%. If you bring Sterling or Dollars, these can be changed into Peruvian Soles at an exchange in Cuzco, or at the hotel. CAN I LEAVE SOME LUGGAGE IN CUZCO? If you are planning on travelling after the trek, and don’t want to take your clothes for this with you, there are left-luggage facilities available at the team hotel in Cuzco. HOW MUCH BAGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON THE TREK? During the trek, your main bag will be carried by mules up until day 7, while you will carry your day pack with your water, snacks, camera and other personal items. Your main bag should weigh no more than 10kg, while we don’t recommend carrying a day bag of more than 5kg. Please see our kit list for more information on what to take. IS PERU SAFE? Peru is a safe and welcoming country for the traveller. Our itinerary is fully risk assessed and regularly monitored. Avoid travelling on your own, or at night in larger cities. Don’t accept drinks from strangers in bars, and be sure to use only official taxis and bus services. Petty crime can occur much like anywhere in the world – so avoid flaunting expensive items such as cameras, jewellery or mobile phones.
