In Conversation
Interview by Literary Manager and Company Dramaturg Marti Lyons
with playwright Will Eno
Interview by Artistic Director Andrew White
ANDREW WHITE: The Man in Title and Deed often seems a highly
unreliable narrator, contradicting himself one minute and yet truthful
and insightful the next. Why should we trust this guy? Or should we?
WILL ENO: I think he should
probably be trusted, entirely
because he contradicts himself.
He is trying to tell the truth, the
whole truth, in the actual moment
of speaking. I think the liars of the
world usually have their story down
pat and pretty-well prepared. I also
think as he goes forward in the
experience of thinking and feeling
and telling his story, perhaps he
becomes a little lighter here, or a
little darker there, and so he also becomes, in tiny but real ways, a
different person, and so of course the story has to change bit by bit.
AW: Your plays seems to be at least partially about language, what it
can contain and what it can’t. Has this always been a fascination for
you? When do you think it started?
2
Lookingglass Theatre Company
WE: I guess they might be partially about language but I hope they
are mainly about people and the world, and of course they have to be
written in some language or other and maybe the most honest and
realistic way to use a language is to be sensitive to its limits and its
frailties. This kind of approach, I hope, also highlights the great and
mysterious things that exist beyond language. This probably started for
me because of a father who would allow almost no topic as a topic of
Title and Deed
3
conversation and a mother who had very strong preferences for certain
topics. When you are little, language must seem like a code, and you
must feel that if you can crack it you will be loved.
UP NEXT AT LOOKINGGLASS
AW: Talk a little bit about the title of the play, and/or why displacement
(or a sense of) is interesting to you.
WE: The title Title and Deed struck me as something that pretty well
described the event. It’s a thing with a title, and in it there is a deed, or
action. Of course there is also the well-known phrase from real estate
which refers to documents proving ownership of, for example, a piece
of land. This state of having a stable and documented connection to a
place is something the character in the play is searching for and trying
to define. I’m sure we all feel a sense of displacement from time to
time, if only because in the simplest way we can’t always be exactly
where we want to be. I think Michael Patrick Thornton will bring such a
strange and powerful quality to the character. I know he knows things
the rest of us don’t know and I’m pretty sure he ignores a lot of the
things that the rest of us know wrongly.
AW: Your characters express (or try, anyway) both an open-mouthed
sense of wonder and a firm grounding in the utterly mundane. Care to
comment?
WE: That’s just how the world has always struck me: totally normal
and completely mysterious. My wife Maria and I have a six-month-old
daughter and it’s so perfect how sometimes when I’m gazing at her,
feeling the loftiest and fullest feelings, she’ll fart or burp and then
smile. The body is always being a body and the mind is always being
a mind and what a great and difficult job we have in trying to manage
both.

Thank you, Lookingglass. Will & Marti are vital artists;
they make our world better. This one is for my friend
Sheldon Patinkin. I still can’t believe you’re gone. And
for Molly Glynn, who got me through the hardest day of
