Posse Announces Launch of Veterans Program
…
Vassar College Becomes First Partner Institution
In an effort to increase the rates at
which veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces
attend and graduate from selective colleges
and universities, The Posse Foundation
recently announced its Veterans Posse
initiative, a new college scholarship
program. Vassar College is the first
institution to partner with the Foundation
to enroll specialized Veterans Posses.
“With more than two million veterans
currently eligible for the GI Bill and more
expected to be added over the coming years,”
says Vassar College President Catharine Hill,
“we’re confident there are many veterans
for whom highly selective colleges and
universities like Vassar will be a great option.”
Providing a top-rate college education
for men and women who have
served our country is critical
The initiative will be supported in part
through $100,000 founding sponsorships. To
date, more than $1 million has been raised,
with leading global software company
Infor, as well as Goldman Sachs Gives,
JPMorgan Chase, Moody’s, Newman’s
Own Foundation and Viacom becoming
founding corporate sponsors. Individual
$100,000 founding sponsors include Jeff and
Laurie Ubben, Garrett and Mary Moran,
and Todd F. Bourell and Brooke C. Bailey.
An additional $150,000 was raised in May
at Posse’s annual gala.

Annual Gala Raises Nearly $2 Million, Honors Luminaries
Posse’s Annual Gala, An Evening of

than 500 guests gathered at Pier Sixty at
Chelsea Piers in New York City to honor
individuals and organizations that have
made extraordinary contributions in the field
of education or have been outstanding role
models for young people.
This year’s gala brought in close to $2
million, $150,000 of which was donated at
the event itself to help support Posse’s new
Veterans Program.
The honorees, recipients of the

“The first time I became a CFO of a
public company, I was young—35 years

The Posse Newsletter summer 2012
In June, representatives from Posse’s
partner colleges and universities gathered
in New York City for the annual Liaisons
Conference. The conference was once again
hosted by Bank of America and focused
on exploring best practices for supporting
Scholars and for fostering integrated
diversity in campus communities.
Participants included campus liaisons,
deans of admission and vice presidents for
enrollment. Featured guest speaker Doug
Cutchins, director of social commitment at
Grinnell College and a Posse liaison and
mentor, spoke passionately about assisting
Scholars in their pursuit of prestigious
post-undergraduate opportunities, including
fellowships for graduate-level study.
In addition to being a forum for
campus leadership to share insights related
to enhancing student performance, the
Liaisons Conference provides a space for
The Posse Foundation to communicate
important programmatic developments.
“Bringing all of these people together
is a great way for us to thank them for their
support and to give information about
where Posse is heading,” says Matthew

Posse Career partner Comedy Central, who
again produced special honoree videos,
helped make the evening one of Posse’s most
memorable.

atrocities that Europe has seen since the
Holocaust.
Many, however, have sadly forgotten
the images of murder, destruction,
genocide and engineered attempts at
cultural annihilation. I choose not to. For
last April also marked 20 years since the
day I had a machine gun pointed at my
face. …
I am still compelled by the
casualties of war, whether in Bosnia or,
most recently, in Iraq. Many survivors
are … left with limited function and
a changed appearance caused by
trauma. … Reflecting on things dear to
me, my decision to pursue plastic and
reconstructive surgery seemed like a great
fit. To have the privilege to restore form
and function to those afflicted by trauma
or congenital defects is hugely fulfilling. …
To my parents, I thank you for the

Debbie and the rest of the Posse family,
I thank you all for being the foundation to

The program’s success at Tulane is in
large part the result of a team of dedicated

worked to build effective resource networks

support is Posse liaison Michael Hogg.
Michael is Tulane’s vice president

been an integral part of Tulane’s evolution

“Mike is a great champion of Posse,”
says Posse Chief Operating Officer

According to Michael, the zeal with
which Posse Scholars immerse themselves
in campus life helps fuel his dedication to
creating an engaged campus.
“My responsibilities, in large measure,

outside the classroom,” he says. “What’s
exciting is sort of reinventing how student
affairs, in general, should connect to
and support the academic mission of the
university as a whole.”
