Movie Review: Rendition
Kodi Franklin
A CIA analyst questions his assignment after
witnessing an unorthodox interrogation at a secret detention
facility outside the US. The story is based on the true story of
Khalid El-Masri, German citizen who was mistaken for Khalid
al-Masri, a man rumored to have been involved with the
September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. ElMasri was held at a black site in Afghanistan in 2004 where he
was interrogated, beaten, sexually abused, and tortured for five
months, after which the CIA released him and admitted his
capture and torture were a mistake. Rendition is very intense; with
vivid images and psychologically disturbing events, it is not for
the faint of heart. I give this film a rating of 9 out of 10.
Feature Poem
“So Cruel”
Tyler West
icy blue eyes
filled with hurt
why would you hurt
someone who loves you
so much?
how can someone so beautiful
be so cruel?
vodka to numb the burn
until I realize the burn in my throat
is actually you
cigarettes to kill the stress
until I realize the nicotine is you
and I’ve been inhaling for months
walking to keep you off my mind
until I see your ghosts everywhere
how can someone so beautiful
be so cruel?
icy blue eyes
filled with anger
why would you hurt
someone who loves you
so much?
sleeping pills to put me to sleep
until you’re my worst nightmare
puking to rid you of my system
until you’re the awful taste
lingering in my mouth
writing to remember
until I can’t forget
how can someone so beautiful
be so cruel?
Actor Quote:
“Don't listen to what anybody says except the people
who encourage you. If it's what you want to do and it's within
yourself, then keep going and try to do it for the rest of your
life.” –Jake Gyllenhaal

Five students from BCS, Cody Barth, Mike Hamer, Joe
Merriam, Mafe Soria, and Mari Zillgitt, were able to join
Genesee Valley’s Varsity Track and Field Team. The team had a
cold and early start to their season. The first meet was held on
Tuesday, April 7th and included Fillmore, Scio, and Keshequa.
The second was held at Franklinville on April 11th only
involving relays. The third was on April 14th at Genesee Valley
and included Wellsville and Cuba-Rushford.
Track is an individual sport in which an athlete can
compete in four out of sixteen events, trying to improve times
and distances. Running events range from short to long
distances, from 100 meters to 3200 meters, with the track being
400 meters around. Field events are jumping and throwing.
Our athletes competed in a variety of events and
demonstrated improvements. Cody Barth improved his time for
the 200M dash along with the 400M hurdles. Mike Hamer
improved his time for the 800M run, and also ran the 1600M.
Joe Merriam ran different events in both meets, including the
3200M and the 800M run. Mafe Soria also had varying events,
including the 100M dash, which is one straight-away on the
track, the 200M dash, and improved in long jump, which is
where an athlete runs to their top speed then jumps off one foot
and lands with two feet in a pit of sand. Their distance is then
measured in feet and inches. Mari Zillgitt improved in the 100M
dash and the 400M dash.
All students from Belfast participated in The Frostbite
Relays during the second meet at Franklinville. A relay consists
of four people running various distances. One runner at a time
hands off a baton to the next person, and the overall time of all
four runners is taken. During the meet, eight schools from
varying divisions compete only in relays. Highlights include
Cody and Joe, placing third in the 4X200M, which is four people
running 200M. Joe and Mike ran in the 4X800M, placing sixth
overall.
The last meet was held on Thursday, April 16th at
Cuba-Rushford and the next meet will be held on April 21st at
Genesee Valley.
The boys have played two games, both against
Canaseraga, to start their season. The first game didn’t fare very
well, with the boys losing 16-1. The second game showed a lot
of heart with the boys taking a 3-2 lead midway in the game.
The Indians got the best of the Bulldogs, winning the game 6-3
in the final inning. The young team has a lot of potential going
into this year and hopefully will have a decent season. The team
also began the season by collecting pop cans in an attempt to
raise enough money to purchase bats. In a matter of an hour and
a half, the boys had collected 8,600 cans, which equates to $430.
Coach Derek Kenyon was able to find two DeMarinis bats of
different sizes for the whole team to use. The difference these
bats made was quite apparent in our last two games. Thank you
to everyone who donated!

Top Ten Metal Bands of All Time
Zach Enders
Osbourne. Some notable tracks are “Paranoid,” “Iron Man,” and “War
Pigs.”
10.) Pantera. Pantera saved heavy metal from the ashes of defeat in the
90’s grunge era. While many bands began changing their images,
Pantera started off with a raw drive that gave them a distinct “Death
March” sound. With fan favorites like “Walk” and “The Cowboys From
Hell”, Pantera finds itself as a vital component to the survival of metal
in its darkest hour.
2.) Iron Maiden. Along with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden was an early
addition to the British Metal Invasion. With over one hundred thousand
records sold from their birth, Iron Maiden owned the stage wherever
they went with creative lyrics centered around historical events,
particularly battle! Some very well done tracks from Iron Maiden are
“Run to the Hills,” “Aces High,” and “The Trooper.”
9.) Avenged Seven Fold. The youngest entry of this list is the modern
metal band that is a staple of the Rockstar Mayhem Festival with other
bands such as Korn and Five Finger Death Punch. The band offers a
variety of great tracks, such as “Hail to the King” and “Dear God”.
1.) Motörhead. In the early seventies, one band paved the way of heavy
metal for everyone. These innovators of blues-rock, punk, and thrash
speed were Motörhead. While lesser known than Black Sabbath,
another big band from the same time period, Ozzy Osbourne speaks
highly of his friend and fellow singer Lemmy Kilmister. Unlike most
bands on this list, Motörhead kept the same image and style of music.
One of the oldest bands on this list, Motörhead has some of the
greatest metal anthems of all time, including “Ace of Spades,” “The
Game,” “Overkill,” and “Bomber.”
8.) Anthrax. In the 80’s, four bands emerged from the washed-up Glam
Rock scene in L.A. Anthrax was one of these bands. The start for Scott
Ian’s band was no cakewalk as they struggled to find a sound they could
call their own. But, once allied with Metallica, Anthrax quickly raised
above all odds, such as record company bankruptcy, fires, and even the
9-11 and anthrax terrorist attacks in September 2001. Despite all the
pitfalls, Anthrax remains strong with favorites like “Madhouse” and
“Caught in the Mosh”.

7.) Slayer. When the Big Four was in its infancy, Slayer was definitely
the black sheep of the group. While Megadeth was set on destroying
Metallica and Anthrax, Slayer was more focused on dark and destructive
lyrics and is undoubtedly one of the more controversial groups on this
list, with tracks like “Raining Blood” and “Angel of Death.”
The Colors of Spring

Of the seasonal colors
The colors of spring
Some of the most beautiful,
6.) Megadeth. Definitely the angry child of the Big Four, Megadeth
served one purpose, to destroy Metallica. After being fired from
Metallica as the lead guitarist, Dave Mustaine road a greyhound bus for
three whole days from New York City to Los Angeles. Upon his return
Mustaine set out to form his own band to rival Metallica. Though he
never fully succeeded, Megadeth released a number of hits that are very
memorable, such as “Holy Wars” and “Rust in Peace”.
Bright, bursting greens, surrounding
All that is in sight,
A miraculous image,
5.) Judas Priest. Back in the decade of Led Zeppelin, a new wave of
British rock and roll began to form. Towards the end of the seventies
and taking the eighties by storm, Judas Priest was a major player in the
birth of heavy metal in America and an inspiration for bands such as
Venom, Megadeth and Metallica. Notable tracks of this band are
“Painkiller,” “Breakin’ the Law,” and “Living After Midnight.”
Lovely, happy pinks, budding
Under the bright sun,
A most romantic color,
Regal purples, flowering
Among the tree stumps
And walking among the leaves,
4.) Metallica. By far the most famous band on this list and the most
controversial, Metallica is the most dynamic band here. However, is
that good or bad? In the beginning Metallica forged a new breed of
metal that quickly gained popularity in the L.A music scene. But, after
the death of their bassist Cliff Burton, Metallica quickly changed with
the times to fight the grunge era. That change from speed and thrash to
grunge and hard rock docks them points on this list. Some notable
tracks are “Master of Puppets,” “Creeping Death,” and “The Four
Horsemen.”
Light, burning yellows, shining,
A dot in the sky
And a flower on the ground,
Cool, watery blues, stretching
Around a bright dot
Until all the color fades,
3.) Black Sabbath. Everyone knows the opening to “Iron Man,”
whether they like it or not. One of the first bands in the mid to early
seventies to coin the iconic metal sound was Black Sabbath. The only
thing that could be more famous than the band is the lead singer Ozzy
Light and pure whites, billowing
Among the bright blues,
Cotton candy in the sky.
