It is our delight to bring to our school and its wonderful Spartans the new edition of the beloved school newspaper. Being the 50th anniversary year of SCI’s founding, the former SCI Vibes members thought it appropriate time for a revitalization. We dusted off our old template and got to work, introducing to you the renamed Silverthorn newspaper: The SCI Veritas! Over the years SCI has had a number of newspapers, all of which have contributed to the history and enrichment of Silverthorn. We have grown from the humble “Institute” to the lively “SCI Vibes” to the latest, refreshed “SCI Veritas”. The name comes from the latin word for truth: “veritas”, a word that is also within Silverthorn’s motto: “Nil Veritur Veritas” meaning: “The Truth Fears Nothing”. With such a name, the members of the new SCI Veritas promise a paper that is certain to be an honest view of the events occurring in the school and in the world, as well as a newspaper that is enlightening and enjoyable to read. To start off this year, we’d like to welcome our new Grade Nine students, and all our other returning or new students. Start this year with optimism, and make it a memorable one! Page 2 Each and every day students walk down the halls of Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, attending classes, finding study time at the library and making the most of their high school years. History is not a part of the daily life of the student, unless it is found in the course, and “making history” is certainly not thought of by most on a regular basis. Despite this, every day Silverthorn students are making history. The clubs you join, the events you are a part of and the memories you make all contribute to the rich history of Silverthorn Collegiate Institute. Liz McElroy It has been nearly fifty years since the founding of Silverthorn C.I. in 1964. When one thinks of a school, the aspect of the building itself might be considered more than any other. However, reflecting back on the history Silverthorn has had, it is clear that a school is made up of much more than simply bricks and windows. Silverthorn Collegiate Institute was named after the property of The Silverthorn Mill Farm which once resided on the land and the family who owned the area. Since the time of its founding, SIlverthorn has grown and flourished to become the successful high school it is today. Over the course of this year in celebration of Silverthorn’s Semi-centennial the SCI Veritas will be featuring articles and photos of the past years and events. Celebrate this year of history at SCI! 50 Years! THE POWER OF A SINGLE LETTER: WE DAY Sindhujaa Ganes How could a single letter change the entire meaning of a word? More ways than you could possibly think to count. What do I mean? I’m speaking of two words in particular; the words “me” and “we”. The meaning of the word “me” is for one to think solely of themselves and all things pertaining to them while the meaning of the word “we” is to have a universal sense of the world. Free the Children and their sub-organization, Me to We, give those two words a very strong link. The purpose of Me to We is to encourage people to stop thinking by the definition of “me” and start having a “we” standpoint of life, seeing past borders and thinking with a more worldly perspective. Thanks to Free the Children and We Day, students, educators, and community members are given the opportunity to witness an entire generation change right before their eyes at an event called We Day. 14 students of Silverthorn’s Social Justice Club were granted the privilege to attend this year’s We Day and truly get a better grasp of the meaning of Me to We. The purpose of We Day, once described as a network of “kids helping kids”, has grown to raise awareness, celebrate young humanitarians and leaders in the community, and to empower people to take a stand on issues worldwide. We Day showcased speakers such Liberian President, the honorable Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Martin Luther King III, Molly Burke, Col. Chris Hadfield, and the Kielburger brothers. The heartwarming speeches spoke of lives that changed dramatically once a SCI VERITAS Page 3 perspective changed from “me” to “we” and how everyone can make a difference. Students could feel the energy run through a crowd of 20,000 people, as performers such as Imagine Dragons, the Jonas Brothers, and Demi Lovato, all of whom embraced the message of Me to We with open arms and took the stage. Aside from the entertainment, these students learned invaluable lessons and learned to truly appreciate their lives and all of the opportunities that are a right to them but merely a privilege to others. The students learned of gender inequality and foreign nations and that so many of the things we take for granted such as clean water, food, education and medicine are rarities for most of the developing world. However, they also learned how to take action and change that. They learned of new initiatives such as WE365, which encourages a positive action everyday for an entire year, and We Create Change that collects money to pay for bricks to build a school in a developing nation. These contributions can create a domino effect of change that are immediately visible and some that will only come to light years from now when future generations of developing nations can fight back with those who helped previous generations today. It may only be a single letter off from “me” but “we” has the power to change the entire world, just like you do. We are the heroes of the future and with our power, will, and determination, we can transform the world into a place where poverty, lack of education, inequality, bullying, and the desperate need for medical care are a thing of the past. If you are interested in being involved or potentially attend a We Day event, feel free to visit the Me to We website, talk to club members or Ms. Lucic in the guidance office for details! Dear Albert and Alf, Dear Albert and Alf, I’m on a school team this year and I love it, but I have a lot of really hard courses and I find that my sport is taking up too much of my time. How do I balance my school work and extracurricular activitues? I want to ask this hottie in my math class on a date but I don’t know how! HELP!! -datemate - Sportsman Sportsman, school comes first, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the school’s sports too! You have prioritize and plan! Obviously, Schedule out your nights so that you can fit in homework and activities and make a plan with your coach about how you will balance everything. -ALBERT Well, if I had to add you two together I think it would equal love. Strike up a conversation in class about long division, and then ask if she has any plans for this weekend. Pop the question right then! Like always Albert, you are completely wrong! Follow your heart, sportsman. Maybe this sport is your true calling; don’t let school get in the way. Don’t forget about academics, but don’t let them take over your life outside of the classroom. No datemate, no!!! You have to write her a loveydovey letter stating your true lovey-dovey feelings for the hottie. Pass it to her in math and keep your fingers crossed! If she doesn’t start avoiding you like the plague, ask her out! - ALF SCI VERITAS -ALBERT -ALF Page 4 HITHER AND YON Puneh Jamshidi As I watch my life unfold, I feel as if everything around me is moving unbelievably fast, like the feeling of standing in a fixed position downtown. Everyone is walking to a determined destination while I have little in mind as to where I am going; I see a blur. I used to have a preset life goal, to be an illustrator; working with my hands stimulated my mind and gave my day meaning. I wanted to create my own art work and inspire others. Though the quick walking of everyone around me was the same as it is now, I’m not walking with the same pace any longer. My mother once told me I could be whatever I wanted when I got older, so I said I wanted to be a mermaid. Though that seems farfetched now, it was the only thing I truly wanted to be; it made me happy. As I grew up, my fellow students told me I couldn’t become such a thing because it was fiction. I listened to them, and understood, but it left me uncertain about my life for a long time. That feeling of uncertainty came again to the day where people constantly told me majoring in art was a very big risk. It could not be done, should not be tried, and that I should look to another future. What is a future anyways? Tomorrow will be today’s future, and in twenty years, I might not want to be what I wanted to be today. To be something for the rest of your life is unrealistic to me. But looking at my future career-wise, I can see myself in many positions, working many different jobs. I could be a pianist in an indie bar, playing nightly shows. I could be a brilliant professor, a famous poet, a therapist, a masseuse, and beyond and above these ideas are many more I still cannot make out, but SCI VERITAS know I can accomplish if I focus my mind. As I stand, I slowly become more and more lost because I want each and every one of these ideas to be my future, my career, but choosing one means losing all the rest. As I stand, unable to choose my fate, I can see them all going rotten, one by one. Though this may seem like a hopeless teen anxiety piece of writing, I’m here to tell you I’m optimistic that this is natural. It’s something common amongst most adolescents, and I’m ready to move forward. YOU ARE SO LOVED Christina Orr It's so easy to get caught in the struggle of high school; stressing over assignments, fitting in, and the other difficulties that come with it. In one way or another we have all been there and felt the effects of negative energy. Fortunately, there is a way out! The way we feel is completely affected by our mental state of being. In other words, you have a greater affect over your own emotions than your outer environment does. Unfortunately, most people learn to gain happiness from the approval of others. This is an unreliable source of happiness! It's a fact we all know too well that you can't always rely on others. It feels good to be wanted but there are always times that other people will let you down. Fear not, my friend! There is always someone who will never let you down - and that person is YOU. However cheesy that sounds, it's the truth, and the small voice of your intuition will nearly always agree with that. Your intuition is your inner guidance that is programmed within you - it's there for a reason! My next tip is to always follow it! In certain situations, logic may appear to win over intuition… unfortunately, logic is your ego. Your ego is what stops you from selfPage 5 (Continued from page 5) growth! It's the part of you that doesn't want to change or lose your current self. It's the nervous feeling that arouses when you are forced out of your comfort zone. Your ego can keep you from discovering talents, trying new things, and meeting new people. Putting yourself out there and overcoming your ego is personal growth! Growth leads to selfconfidence and a confidant you is a happier you. And don't we all strive for happiness? Learn to love yourself and you'll grow to attract and accept more love. Stay amazing! MOVIE REVIEW Sara Djokanovic INSIDIOUS Synopsis: Josh Lambert and his wife, Renai move into a nice, big house with their three children: Dalton, Foster, and the new member of the family, Cali. The movie begins when Dalton goes exploring and ends up in the new house’s eerie, dark attic where he SCI VERITAS falls off a ladder and hits his head. However, Dalton remains uninjured and appears to be fine for the remainder of the night, until the next day when he falls into a coma and is rushed to the hospital. Struggling for his life, the doctors are unable to diagnose his problem. Three months later, Dalton still rests in a coma resides with his family in his home, hooked to machines. Strange things begin occurring around the house with doors opening and closing and apparitions, and unnatural noises. Renai finally comes to the conclusion that the house is haunted and the family decides to move. Once done, they feel some relief when they leave the house and all its ghosts (literally) behind, but as quickly as it comes, it’s replaced with an even bigger, inexplicable fear. Review: When I first saw Insidious, I thought it was a fascinating and entertaining, horror movie with plenty of wildly amusing pop-up scares. It wasn’t until a while later when I tried to explain it to a friend of mine that I realized I truly had no idea what it was about. I really did enjoy it, but when I tried to put pieces together at the end, nothing fit. The story line was confusing. I feel like this horror movie tried too hard to be like several others but ended up being none of them. Nevertheless, the surprises in the movie sort of made up for the unclear story. The scares in the movie were unexpected and a blast to watch as they were quite shocking and caught everyone off guard. Overall, I’d say this movie is fun to watch with a group of friends, but alone you are likely to be both terrified and confused. Yes, like the leaves on the ground, it is the season of pictures of grande-sized Pumpkin Spice Lattes littering your Instagram feed and of course, the return or the release of all things entertainment you've been waiting for this year! If you've been living under a rock all summer and you have no idea what this is about, then please, read on. TELEVISION/MOVIES: It’s tough when you’re heading back to classes and your favourite shows are simultaneously returning (weird, right?). While some are making their triumphant return, others are…well, they’re sending you kisses from the train taking them to The Point of No Return. Sorry about that. You might be trying to keep up in your classes with minimal procrastination, but you probably won’t have any luck with these returning favourites and newbies! The Originals: The Vampire Diaries spinoff focuses on three members of the original family, Klauss (Joseph Morgan), Rebekah (Claire Holt), and Elijah (Daniel Gilles), as they return to the city they themselves built. If you drooled over the last four seasons of The Vampire Diaries, hopefully this spin-off will leave you with a bucket placed with precision under your chin as you full-on salivate. The Walking Dead: IT'S BAAAAAACK! Yes, the Walking Dead returns with its fourth season in just a few weeks! Four seasons...wow! Seems like just yesterday when Lori didn't know if baby Judith was Rick's or Shane's...Anyway, with Woodbury SCI VERITAS in pieces, a mass of new people in the prison, the Governor still at large, and of course the maniac who keeps leading a herd of walkers to the gates, a million questions arise for viewers. Will the group survive long enough to remain in their safe haven or will they have to flee in search of a new one? Whether they survive long enough, we don’t know, but we do know that you won’t be getting any of that last minute homework done because it’s going to be that good! You’ll see what we’re talking about October 13th on AMC! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: So…Colson’s still alive… SURPRISE! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D premiered a few days ago and the whole premise of the show revolves around the cases this special Colson-assembled team takes on regarding the popping up of new supernatural beings. If you loved The Avengers, then you might just love this little spin-off. If you stick around long enough, maybe you’ll find out how Colson was resurrected! Breaking Bad: Oh Breaking Bad, how you’ve melted our hearts and taught us a lot about the world of narcotics production…The cast and the series itself wave goodbye and fans can’t help but be a little emotional, but thank goodness creator Vince Gilligan couldn’t bear to do it! He couldn’t handle our misery - or his own – so, AMC is proud to announce the production of its spin-off series Better Call Saul! This show may not take away the post-series wailing for some of you, but Saul Goodman’s not too far to wipe away your tears…and potentially sue someone for all the mental and emotional pain the ending of the series has caused you. Expect good things soon, folks! Page 8 Ravenswood: Calling all Pretty Little Liars fans! The series follows character Caleb Rivers, played by the uber-gorgeous Tyler Blackburn, as he goes to the strange town of Ravenswood in search of answers about his mysterious doppelganger relative from decades ago. If it’s a spin-off of Pretty Little Liars, and based in a town creepier than Rosewood, then Ravenswood will leave you cowering on the edge of your seat speechless. J.K Rowling: Need I say more? If you don’t get it, let us explain. Author and creator of Harry Potter, the great J.K hasn’t left her loyal, loving Potterheads to dry out in the sun. There’s been talk of a new movie revolving around Newt Scamander, author of Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them of the Harry Potter series, in the works. Ever since the end of the seven-book/eight-movie phenomenon, those who fell in love with Harry and his friends can be nothing less than grateful for Ms. Rowling and her exquisite heart. How excited are you, though? We hope your answer is incredibly excited (all answers below that calibre are unacceptable). MUSIC: Fall 2013 Album Releases! Need another reason to love the fall? If a plethora of album releases aren’t enough than we really don’t know what is. AM: by the Arctic Monkeys may or may not be referred to as “highly anticipated” but its arrival has definitely proven that wait was worth the while. Out the 9th of October, AM combines a medley of their old stuff and a promise for the new. SCI VERITAS If you enjoyed their previous four albums or are an indie-rock enthusiast, AM might be just for you! Nothing was the Same: The highly anticipated album from the Torontonian has fallen into the hands of fans and they have spoken: it’s exactly what they wanted and far more than what they had expected. After Take Care’s raging success, the world only wanted Drake to go further, and he went above and beyond. M.I.A might have fallen off the planet for quite some time but she’s coming back with her next album, Matangi, this November! Maybe we’ll get more fancy-car-trick-inspired videos, which we should all admit makes us do some very questionable dance moves in private, or it might totally flop like /\/\/\Y/\. Hopefully, it’s not the latter. Fingers crossed. JT is back in full swing, ladies and gentlemen. After his wildly successful singles “Suit and Tie,” “Mirror,” and his mindblowing performance at this year’s VMA’s, the world can only imagine what Justin’s got in store for us with The 20/20 Experience, Part 2. If these songs can surpass the unfortunate mishap of “Take Back the Night” and all of its controversy, then we can all shove Bieber out of the spotlight and continue to happily bounce along with all the highly-anticipated proposal/choreography-worthy music from the new album. Hoorah! Nirvana: Nirvana? Yes, Nirvana. Celebrating the 20 year anniversary of In Page 9 (Continued from page 9) Utero, Universal is re-releasing the album as a “super edition” which includes four disks of tour footage, a 20th century mixture of songs, and rumor has it, a neverbefore-heard instrumental track. If you weren’t old enough in the 80s/90s to really enjoy the magic of Nirvana, well this is probably the closest you’re going to get. Enjoy. JUICY LIFESTYLE Anonymous Hey SCI! This new addition is going to be your favourite column in the SCI Veritas. Since this is the first issue, this will explain the background of ‘Juicy Lifestyle' and its purpose. The point of this column is to improve your lifestyle and the choices you make. We will fill you in on healthy meal choices, healthy ways to stay fit, and healthy ways to keep "juicy"! This month's healthy tip is: bringing lunch from home. Instead of wasting money and taking in harmful substances, try to bring leftovers from last night’s dinner. Don't let that lasanga go to waste! Bring it to school, with a healthy appetizer on the side, like an apple! Apples are low in calories, contain no saturated fats or cholesterol, contain anti-oxidant phyto nutrients flavonoids and polyphenolics. Apples also have minerals in them such as; potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. Potassium is great for controlling the heart rate and blood pressure. Remember, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Also, try to fit that run into your busy schedule! Everyone should try to squeeze in 60 minutes of exercise in their day, to keep physically fit and maintain your "juiciness". Alright have a great month and stay tuned for more information on having a JUICY LIFESTYLE! MANITOU 2013 The Best Day Ever - Ahmed Jama SCI VERITAS Page 10
