Holdenville TRIBUNE VOLUME 13, NUMBER 30 HUGHES COUNTY, OKLAHOMA 1 SECTION 50¢ WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2013 PAGE 2—HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—JULY 3, 2013 There were several great items passed around at our recent school reunion this past weekend and here is my favorite . . . High School – 1958 vs. 2013 Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck’s gun rack. 1958 – Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, toes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2013 – School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school. 1958 – Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2013 – Police called and SWAT team arrives. They arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it. Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. 1958 – Jeffrey sent to the Principal’s office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. 2013 – Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1958 – Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman. 2013 – Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has an affair with the psychologist. Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin at school 1958 – Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock. 2013 – The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English. 1958 – Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college. 2013 – Pedro’s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro’s English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing laws for a living because he cannot speak English. Scenario 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed. 1958 – Ants die. 2013 – ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny’s dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. Scenario 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him 1958 – In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. 2013 – Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3-years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years old therapy. —CC— My second favorite was the first of upcoming shows for senior citizens . . . • RV Being Served? • Saturday Night Still Alive • Omega-3’s Company • Leave It To Geezer • The Gimpsons • Looney Prunes • The Dentures of Brisco County, Sr. • Has Been Peaks • The Talk Bored Files • The Bengay Team —CC— And finally, one of my friends from the Class of ’53 shared the following prayer . . . Lord, thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older. Keep me from getting too talkative, and thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken. Make me thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy, for Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—JULY 3, 2013—PAGE 3 The Year Was 1963 LARGE SUPPLY OF HIGH SCHOOL TALENT CREATES QUANDARY A bevy of talented youngsters made three judges scratch their heads for decisions at the Holdenville High School Talent Show and Carnival Friday. The junior and senior high school edition of the talent show was presented Saturday night in the high school auditorium, as the grade school section had been presented Thursday evening. Categories assigned to the different sections of the show Saturday were: groups, instrumental, junior high; instrumental, senior high; vocal individual, senior high; vocal individual, junior high. POINT SYSTEM The entries were judged on a point system, that is, a perfect score for a person or group was the number four. Next rating down was three; next, two and last, one. Each of the three judges assigned a number to each entry and at the program’s end voted this number. The three numbers were added, then averaged. In this manner, if all three judges voted four on an entry, the entry’s number was four. In the group category, the first prize went to a comedy dance routine performed by Dee Ann Elliston and Bobby Irby, and the second prize went to a triple trio. The members of the triple trio were Carol Adams, Linda Lee, Marlene Leewright, Carol Blaylock, Heather Huser, Linda Hutchings, Dee Ann Elliston, Lynna Hayes, and Linda Bunch. In the instrument, junior high category, Mitchell House won first prize with a baritone horn solo. TWO FIRSTS In the instrument, senior high category, Max Williams and Larry Leach each won a first prize. Max Williams performed on the Electric organ and Larry Leach played and sang with an electric guitar. In the vocal, individual, senior high, Linda Bunch won first prize with a “jazz-age” song, and David Weatherspoon won second prize with his singing of “Moon River.” In the vocal, individual, junior high, Tommy Winningham and Richard Borjes each won a first prize. VOCAL SOLOS The program was arranged so that most of the vocal solos came first in order. The performers were Sharon Stafford, Rosaline Clark, Pearline Westbrook, Neva Clark, David Weatherspoon, Paula Duffus, Tommy Winningham, Don Woodford, the “Milky Ways” a jazz band, Richard Borjes and Berthene Nickerson. The triple trio then performed, followed by a skit. The skit cast consisted of Jerry Moeller, Jan McCutchan, Fran Wilbanks, Judy Pettit, Brent Davis, Linda Kirby, Kathy Nolan, Dana Whitton, Mary Harris, Brock Olivo and Richard Borjes. Heather Huser narrated. These acts were followed by Larry Leach on the electric guitar and Oliver Howard, playing a solo written especially for the tuba. Max Williams and his electric organ was next on the program, followed by a dance group. DANCERS This group was composed of Willia Mae Brown, Patricia Olden, Walter Brown, Russell Campbell, Thurman Olden and Sharon Kay Olden. Bob Irby and Dee Ann Elliston closed the show with their rustic comedy dance. While the judges worked out their decision, the audience was entertained by Maria Woodford at the piano, playing “Allegro Appassionata,” and a duet, Max Williams and Maria Woodford playing “Begin the Beguine” on the piano and organ. Jack Cooper and Bill Adams entertained as masters of ceremonies, assisted by Kate Mackey. The director of the show was Mary House. Brandi Fletcher Returns From Washington, D.C. Brandi Fletcher of Holdenville, OK, has recently returned home from an eventful, fun-filled week in Washington, D.C. Brandi, daughter of Randy and Darlene Fletcher, won the 2013 Rural Electric Cooperative “Youth Tour” contest, sponsored by People’s Electric Cooperative in Ada, OK. The 50th Annual Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour began June 14, 2013, with a “Get Acquainted Banquet” in Oklahoma City. The 72 young winners, representing 25 of the state’s rural electric systems, departed for the nation’s Capitol the next morning. “In my opinion, the most exciting part of the trip was getting to witness the changing of the guards at Arling- ton Cemetery,” said Brandi. “Other highlights of the trip were getting know all the other amazing students on the trip.” In addition to seeing all the historical monuments and taking photos of the White House, the Oklahoma winners toured The U.S. Capitol, The U.S. Holocaust Museum, the Pentagon, Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theatre and enjoyed a riverboat cruise on the Potomac River. The group also hosted a Congressional Summit for the Oklahoma Delegation, aides and guests, assisted by Congressman Lucas, Cole and Senator Inhofe and their staff. The tour is coordinated each year by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives. ....50 Years Later by Bill Callison How do you unfold life’s map and enable class members to drive across 50 years of life and reconnect? It was completed on the weekend of June 28 and June 29 in Holdenville, in the year of 2013 through the efforts of several who became a committee without knowing it. The rewards were wonderful as the class of ‘63 came together. The gathering was made possible by the kindness of people such as Carol and Victor Pryor, who opened their home for the gathering of HHS grads from many different classes, as well as the Holdenville Methodist Church, which allowed the group to meet and embellish details of life experiences that occurred during the lives of each class member. You see, when you span so many years you need to unfold the map of a lifetime from creases of ‘63 to 2013 in order to allow class members to fill in the details of that map. All who were fortunate to attend came away with good memories and connections to friends they had not seen during those hidden years. Earlier arrivals from as far as Georgia and the cool air of Colorado started the connecting process at the Pryor’s home with great food and conversation. Not knowing who was there, it became necessary to look at nametags to make name association and connect to the long ago friends. After all, we all came in costume of 50 years of life. Good food was enjoyed along with conversation to connect friends from other classes. The journey was continued on Saturday as the unknown committee met in the basement of the Methodist Church in Holdenville to place memory joggers to enable a quick start on the reconnection process. The so-called “unknown committee” had a head start because of the weeks of detective work to find classmates. It was nothing short of a miracle that so many class members from so many parts of the country were located. Many that were located were not able to make adjustments to their schedule to attend; however, many great conversations were had. The general finding was you could not talk to a former classmate for less than 30 minutes. The unknown committee grew as member after member made contacts with friends they knew. Not one member could come up with the contact information for all classmates. Something like, “it takes a village to ….” It was a wonderful weekend trip down memory lane, but it had to end at some point with hope of “Part II” in the near future. Several classmates are moving back to the area and want to reconnect, also. When you unfold the map of life many details have to somehow be filled in. Such as friends racing across Central’s school grounds those many years ago. And, the discipline that was learned because of the wonderful teachers taught us those many years ago and gave us a chance to have a very successful life. After all HHS has produced many world-changing contributors. Many financial contributors to places of education, as well as technologies, life giving support, CEO’s, company owners, and on and on. All made possible by so many in and around Holdenville. Again, it’s something like, “it takes a village to ….” The class of ‘63 says Thank you HOLDENVILLE TRIBUNE—JULY 3, 2013—PAGE 5 Lip Lick’n Good ur church o y r e t a c s Let u e parties! g r la d n a s outing Monday - Thursday 11-8 • Friday - Saturday 11-9 Closed on Sunday 129 N. Johnny Jack, Jeffrie Mote, John Dale Earls and Seth Harjo got to explore Oklahoma’s natural resources with Forestry professionals from across the state. Hands on activities included forest management, stream ecology, fire management, wildlife management, urban forestry, entomology and mammal study, and how they all work together. During free time they got to canoe, fly fish, play basketball, swim, volleyball and archery. Because of their participation, these Scouts have earned several merit badges towards their path to Eagle Scout. It wasn’t a week later and Troop 435 was off again to Boy Scout Camp Simpson, south of Ada. John Dale Earls, Seth Harjo, Alec Proctor, Alex Proctor, Kenny Ratcliff, and Joseph Earls earned merit badges in Climbing, Environmental Science, Wilderness Survival, Swimming, Fishing, Sailing, Shotgun, Leatherwork and First Aid. Special awards went to Seth Harjo who got second place in the Critter Crawl, when his tarantula beat a grasshopper, two other tarantulas and a non-poisonous snake. John Dale Earls placed second in the Spiderman Climb, climbing the 40 foot tower in only 2 minutes and 10 seconds. “We had a blast,” said the Scouts. “We want to go back next year.” Thanks to the Muscogee Creek Nation, these Scouts were given the opportunity to expand their horizons.
