Good day all.
My name is Bruce Grandel and I am the new President of the AHPA.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our past President Mike Holley for his hard
work and leadership over the last couple of years. I should add that having met and chatted
with the executive, I can see how he managed to handle the position so effortlessly……But
seriously, I know for a fact that Mike and the rest of the Executive put in many hrs. of work
at home and after tournaments so please, when you see them, take a moment to shake their
hand and let them know they are appreciated.
Many thanks as well to the executive and to all who work to keep our sport functioning. I
look forward to working with all of you. We cannot function without the volunteer groups
so if you are asked to help out do so.
Better yet—VOLUNTEER!!!
I spent some time chatting with many of you this past season and found that there are
many players and associates who have a ton of ideas and input regarding ways to improve
the sport of Horseshoes and increase membership etc. Well, I now challenge you all to step
up and put those ideas out to the membership and to your executive in the zone meetings
or at tournaments and club meetings. Put them on the agenda, let’s hear from you and lets
all start doing instead of sittin’ around and bitchin’.
In closing, I want to say that my main thrust as President will be to reunite the province at
the club level as I have the feeling that there are many strong minds out there who have
thrown up their hands in frustration over real or imagined slights. The sport of Horseshoe
Pitching and the AHPA needs your experience so let’s get together and talk it out. My
contact info is on the web site. USE IT.

Presidential Address
Hello, let me introduce myself again, I’m Mike Holley and I am the outgoing President of the
AHPA. Notice I said that I am the outgoing President. I will not be running for reelection. I
want everyone to understand that I am not running away from the position, I am acceding to
the rules and mandates of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, where they state that
the President and Treasurer should not be in the same household. I am certain that there is
someone out there willing to, and more than capable of, taking over the position of President
and I sincerely wish them all the best. It has been fun, even those times when it wasn’t all that
much fun, and I have learned quite a lot about myself and about the way things work in a
democratic organization.
First, let me say, I’m going to say things in this address that will be less than popular. I am
going to give examples of things that I find disturbing or downright wrong. If I give an
example, I won’t say who it was and, hopefully, I will state it in such a way that only the
individual involved will know that I am directing the example at them. So, if you react to an
example that I am stating, the only one to blame for revealing that it’s you, will be you.
The financial state of the AHPA is precarious and fragile, it will take very little effort, or lack of
effort, to send the whole thing spiraling into the ground. We need to make some hard
decisions and I hope that everyone here has the courage and conviction to make those
decisions. When you send in a claim for expenses, there are rules to be followed. Using the
excuse, ‘I didn’t know that’ or ‘Nobody told me’ are not acceptable. ‘I didn’t know where to
find the forms’, is another example of no excuse. All the forms are on the website, and if you
don’t know how to access the website, find out how, have someone help you, get your 8 year
old grandchild to get it for you. It is not the responsibility of the AHPA to make sure that you
have the ability or the interest or are computer savvy enough to find out all these things.
Things have changed and things will continue to change and we had all better accept that.
When you submit a claim to the Treasurer, why have some of you decided that all you have to
do is submit the receipts and the Treasurer is responsible for sorting out how the receipts are
to be used? Has the Treasurer become a mind reader? Is the Treasurer the one that made
your travel arrangements? Does the Treasurer know how you spent your money? When you
submit your claim, make sure that it is logical and honest. Make sure that the receipts you are
submitting are for the correct tournament. Proposals are being made to change the way that
AHPA spends its’ money; think about those changes and propose some of your own or vote
how you wish about the proposals, just make the decisions yours and stand up for what you
believe. Stop just talking about it.
Next, there are people that feel that it was always done this way, therefore, it should always
be done that way. Again, things change. Accept it. When the membership makes the decision
to make a change, it is not directed at you, unless you have done something spectacularly
wrong or unpopular, and maybe the change is just to try something new. I know we become
comfortable in our own little worlds, but, sometimes worlds collide and you need to adapt.
A new President is going to take over this position, and I am quite sure that no everyone will
agree with every decision that the new President will make, I know that first hand, but I hope
that everyone will support that person in their new role and give them the respect that the
position deserves. I said this last year, and I think it bears repeating, if you don’t agree, don’t
talk about it, do something about it. Take a stand, stand up for yourself, let the proper people
know that you disagree, run for office. The people that complain and whine about things they
have no control over are not helping the situation. Take control, learn how to do things, make
changes, learn to adapt. The President has the authority to appoint people to certain
positions and, personally, I tried to make sure that the person appointed wanted the position,
however, I have discovered that just because you want the position doesn’t mean you can do
the job. If you want a position make sure that you have the ability, the knowledge, the
wherewithal and the time to perform that function adequately. Too often I would discover
that a job I expected to be done wasn’t and the excuses ranged from ‘I didn’t know that’ to ‘I
just don’t have time’ or ‘I forgot’. None of these excuses are acceptable. So, if you’re prepared
to do the job, do the job. These are the things that will help the AHPA and your executive, and
therefore, help you make this sport more fun for you and maybe when people see how much
fun you’re having they will want to join in.
Finally, it has been a great honor and privilege to serve the members of AHPA as their
President. Was it a smooth ride? Not always. But I tried to make all decisions based on what
was best for the AHPA. I know not everyone agreed, but that’s what makes things like this fun
and interesting. Thank you for letting me perform in this role and I, of course, will be around
to see each and every one of you in the future.
Mike Holley

RE: 2015 AGM Annual Report
Our members have had a successful year and participated at a number of tournaments
in Alberta, British Columbia and New Brunswick.
Lyle Olmstead placed 1st in his class at the Memorial Cup, Provincial and Western
Canada tournaments. He also participated in the Canadian Championships.
Dave Burrows participated in the Canadian Championships and received a silver
medal in his class. He also played in the Memorial, Calgary Open and the Western
Classic in Prince George, B.C.
Jerry Riemann, a new member, participated in the 55 Plus Summer Games in
Strathmore. He was second in his division at the Memorial Cup.
We have had several new members join us this year. They have been attending our
weekly games and enjoy the time spent with the other club members.
Our Annual Dinner meeting is being held at the Henderson Lake Golf Course in
October 2015.
Regretfully, Bob Sheward, our secretary passed away in July at the age of 70. He is
survived by his wife Ann and family. His friendship will be missed.
We will continue to participate and support the efforts of the Alberta Horseshoe Pitchers
Association.

Medicine Hat Horseshoe Club Report 2015.
Our original pits, which were destroyed by the flood mitigation berm, were moved to new
location in Southridge. The City of Medicine Hat purchased 8 sets of pits for us. We are
presently in negotiations with the city re: lowering the pits into asphalt, providing us with
lights and power on site, and perimeter fencing. We increased our membership from 13
to21 in 2015. We have acquired a few sponsors, of which 5 have agreed to year to year
donations.

Zone 2 Report

We had good weather.
Jane Cordingley clinched the Ladies Provincial Title for the 8th consecutive year.
She finished 2nd in the World Prelims, B Class and 14th in the Championship round.

The Calgary Horseshoe Club
Calgary has had a very busy year. Our winter tournaments were small but enjoyed by
everyone.
Our membership was up this year as we have ninety-four paid up members.
Had family nights, which were well attended. Had cards, floor shuffleboard, darts and
table shuffleboard.
Have had only one school this year. Therefore we have to do more work on getting
schools to attend.
Our Tuesday night league is going very well, have had a lot of new people. Had nights
where we were using every court that we have.
Thursday afternoon league is also going very good.
Have had a bunch of good rentals this summer. Have one rental with from forty to fifty
members.
We are working with the city on future repairs to the building.
Advertising in coffee news for new members. Also looking at other ways to obtain new
members.
Our summer tournaments were down in numbers this year, whether this is because of
long weekends or other concerns. We need to see what is everyone’s concern.

Zone 4 Report for 2015
Hello everyone. I find it hard to believe how fast the summer flew by.
The weather cooperated for our tournaments, enabling the clubs to
host both days of the weekend. The number of participants was down
this year due to the number of Albertans who participated in both the
World Horseshoe Championships in Topeka, Kansas and the Canadian
Horseshoe Championships in St. Stephens, New Brunswick. Three Zone
4 horseshoe players threw in the worlds-Steve Moody (who placed
11th), David Kilbourn (who placed 11th) and Winnona Kilbourn (who
placed 8th) in their respective groups. In the Canadians, David placed
1st and Winnona placed 2nd in their respective groups.
I was disappointed to hear second handed that the Alberta Open was
cancelled in Lacombe. However, thanks to Dianne Beck and the Calgary
Horseshoe Club, it was rescheduled for September 19 th and 20th at the
Calgary Horseshoe Club. I would like to thank Noel and Hazel for
responding to my email requests to reschedule our Zone 4 meeting as it
originally was slated for September 19th.
In closing, just a short reminder that our Alberta AGM will be held in
Wetaskiwin on October 3rd. I hope you all have a good winter as I am
looking forward to playing with you folks again next year.

Alberta Sports Connection – 2015 report
I have just completed an on-line survey for our ASC grant. Each year these surveys are
requesting more information. Besides breaking our member ship down into male and females
and 5 different age groups, they are now asking which zone these individuals reside in.
This was the first stage of our grant. In the next few months, I will be submitting other
requirements. Some of these are:
 List of our executives
 Financials-actual for 2014-2015
 Financials-estimated for 2015-2016
 Our business plan
 Progress on our goals within this business plan
Our magic number is 500 members to qualify for our grant. These members can be players
and/or associates. We have met this requirement for this fiscal year as we are over 600
members strong.

Bursary Report - 2015
The following 5 people met all our criteria that we specified. There were 2 others. One did not
have proof of registration and the other was too late. New criteria of interviewing references
could not be totally implemented as many persons away this year, however, due to numbers
received these were felt not needed anyways.

Western Canada Classic - 2015 report
This year’s tournament was held in Prince George, BC.
There was a total of 53 players, 26 of which were from Alberta.
We had good, hot weather and good food, as always.
We had some issues with the draw, which were communicated to the tournament directors.
At our meeting, it was moved to adopt Horseshoe Canada rules for running of the tournament.
Next tournament will be held in Manitou Beach on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016.

The Canadian Horseshoe Tournament was hosted by the St. Stephen Horseshoe
Club, August 11 – 15, 2015. The tournament committee, led by Jason Rideout,
did a great job despite a few hiccups. The opening ceremonies were well
attended by locals and by players.
There were 212 entries with 19 of those from Alberta.
Special thanks to those AHPA members who were a great help. They kept score,
judged, posted wins and losses, did computer input, helped with sales and many
other jobs that needed done.

Horseshoe Canada Tournament Director
Memberships – David Kilbourn
Here is a copy of the Membership totals that I read out at the meeting.
The one thing of mention was to have the AHPA send a thank you to those Red Deer Club
members that worked with the students this year. President asked the Zone Rep, Winnona
Kilbourn to do this.

Alberta Horseshoe Pitchers Association
2015 Sportsman of the year Award
Recipient: KEVIN CUTHBURT
What is Sportsmanship - An aspiration or ethos that a sport activity will be
enjoyed for its own sake with proper consideration for fairness, ethics,
respect, and a sense of fellowship with ones competitors.
When asked to pick someone deserving of this award, I thought long and
hard—mainly because- in my humble opinion- there are many who could be
chosen.
The person receiving this honor has attended many AHPA tournaments this
year. He has made himself available for everything asked – from packing
computer equipment or moving tables (picnic or other) to scorekeeping,
judging, cleanup—whatever needed to be done without a gripe or grumble
and always a smile on his face. There are no complaints lodged against him
and he is always very good with scorekeepers, concession staff, tournament
staff, and everyone involved in horseshoes.
Congratulations Kevin

2015 MEDIA AWARD
The Innisfail Horseshoe Club would like to Nominate
THE INNISFAIL PROVINCE
For the AHPA 2015 Media Award
The recipient of this award is very receptive to Horseshoe Pitching. They have
covered our tournaments since we started in 1987. They have taken many
pictures and interviewed us several times. We have appreciated their interest in
our sport.
And so, we nominate the Innisfail Province for the 2015 Media Award.

2015 Hall of Fame
Inductees
Vera and Gordon Ball
ALBERTA HORSESHOE PITCHERS ASSOCIATION
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES 2015
Name: Gordon and Vera Ball
Gordon had two hobbies, horses and horseshoes.
In a small town in Saskatchewan he learned to throw horseshoes when he was just six years old.
The men taught all the young kids to play.
He became a member of the Lethbridge Horseshoe Club and thought tournaments would be a good
thing to do. His accomplishments are as follows:
2003 – Won his class in the Western Canada Classic in Calgary
2003 – Club Most Improved Player
2005 – Provincial Most Improved Player
2005 – Won his class in the AB Open
2005 – Club Most Improved Player
2005 – League Player of the Year
2006 – Won his class in the AB Open
2007 – League Player of the Year
He was President of the Lethbridge Club for 8 years
He retired from C.P. Rail after 41 years on the trains – steam engines and diesels. In the winter he
spent 26 years in Mesa, AR where he played horseshoes and competed in tournaments. He has
enjoyed every sport he participated in and made many friends. He has been married for 66 years
and lives with his wife, Vera, on 40 acres NE of Lethbridge.
Vera’s accomplishments with horseshoes are as follows:
2005 - Won her class in the AB Open
2006 - Won her class in the Provincials
2006 – Provincial Most Improved with crest and plaque.
This last one moved Vera up a class, which she enjoyed until she developed knee problems.
Gordon and Vera received several crests with league play in their Lethbridge Club.
Gordon was always able to get the Lethbridge Herald to do interviews and profiles which have
helped to promote the sport of horseshoes. They have brought in a number of new players through
the power of the press.
The U. of L. makes arrangements with the Lethbridge Club, every year, to meet at the pits, with the
Sport Education Students, to demonstrate the game of horseshoes.
Both Gordon and Vera have been loyal supporters of the horseshoe tournaments over the years,
attending as many as possible. Although Vera has hung up her shoes, Gordon is still playing
Thursday nights at the club, and can still throw doubles at 88 years old.
Please join me in congratulating Gordon and Vera Ball as the 2016 Inductees into the AHPA Hall of
Fame.
