refunded in the event of illness or an accident.
WHAT IS STUDENT SOCIAL SECURITY?
I came to France for a 2-month work
placement, and so I wasn’t covered by the
social security scheme. Luckily, LMDE has
health care cover especially for foreign
students here for a short stay!
In France, the social security system is the organisation responsible for reimbursing part of your healthcare costs.
Students can be covered by student social security via healthcare mutuals such as LMDE.
To enjoy student social security cover (Sécurité sociale étudiante), you must register with an authorised higher
education institution and be legally resident in France for the university year 2016/2017 (from 01/09/2016
to 31/08/2017 as per current legislation). Your status then depends on your age and your country of origin
(according to agreements between France and your country regarding healthcare).

When registering with your higher education establishment, state LMDE centre 601 as your student
social security centre.

To obtain a permanent social security number, you must provide LMDE with an original of your birth
certificate and a version in French (translation by a legalised translator or certification in French) and a
copy of your identity document (passport, valid residence permit or identity card).
Civil status documents issued by a foreign authority, except if from a country exempted from this formality,
legalised or certified with an apostille.
