The Next-to-Last Word:
Service, Hope, and Revival in the Postexilic Prophets
Michael P. V. Barrett
DESCRIPTION
Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi—the often ignored Minor Prophets—delivered
the next-to-last word to God’s people, pointing them to Christ, the supreme and
final Word, and warning them against rejecting Him. Underscoring the truth that
studying this portion of Scripture is profitable (2 Tim. 3:16), Michael Barrett helps
us discern the relevance of these prophets for today. He explains the prophetic
office, the historical setting of the postexilic books, and their contributions to
God’s overall redemptive message before considering the specific messages of
each of these books in depth. Study questions at the end of each chapter enhance
individual and group Bible study.

“A book like this could be so sketchy that it’s not useful, or so exhaustive that one
is simply awash in a muddle of detail. But in length and depth Dr. Barrett’s treatment of these three neglected prophets is—like Baby Bear’s porridge—just right.
He nicely balances the ‘what’ (explanation) and the ‘so what’ (application), and,
while anchoring us in the historical context, he insistently and unabashedly keeps
our eyes fixed on the Christ-centered hope they proclaimed.”
—Dale Ralph Davis, minister in residence, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia,
South Carolina
“Michael Barrett’s recent work on the postexilic prophets is written from a pastor’s
perspective and doesn’t get bogged down in scholarly details. He lovingly presents these prophets as God’s ‘next-to- last word,’ which leads to God’s final Word,
Jesus the Messiah. For Christians who long for a feast with these prophets as the
centerpiece, Barrett’s work will be fresh bread.”

Marie Durand
Simonetta Carr
Illustrated by Matt Abraxas
DESCRIPTION
In 1730, fifteen-year-old Marie Durand was arrested and taken
from her home in a village in Southern France for the crime of
having a brother who was a Protestant preacher. Imprisoned
in the Tower of Constance, Marie would spend the next thirtyeight years there. Simonetta Carr introduces us to the inspiring
life of a woman who could have recanted her Protestant faith
and gained release, but held fast to the truth—and encouraged others to do so as well. Beautiful illustrations, a simply told
story, and interesting facts acquaint young readers with the
challenges facing Protestants in eighteenth-century France and
show them that even a life spent in prison can be lived in service
to Christ and others.

“Simonetta opens a window into Marie Durand’s life and world,
giving us a glimpse of what French Protestants experienced during the reign of King Louis XIV and of his great-grandson, Louis
XV of France. We admire their courage and tenacity and desire
to follow their example of faithful perseverance under trial,
thus bringing glory to God. I’m sure that readers will enjoy this
beautifully produced book as they learn about an era in French
church history that not many are exposed to.”

“A wonderful and engaging story of courage, faith, and hope in
an era of persecution, this story of the trials and tribulations of
Marie Durand is sure to inspire many.”
—Martin Klauber, affiliate professor of church history,
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
“Marie Durand’s life is fascinating. She was imprisoned when
she was nineteen because her brother was a pastor at a time
when Protestantism was forbidden in France. She was released
after thirty-eight years. In this book, Simonetta Carr tells this
story very simply, but with many details so that we can imagine
the difficult life of French Protestants in the eighteenth century.
Also, we can marvel at their faith and their perseverance. The
beautiful illustrations by Matt Abraxas help us to understand
this story of grace and intolerance and to commune with these
ordinary women who didn’t want to deny their faith.”

Passing Through: Pilgrim Life in the Wilderness
Jeremy Walker
DESCRIPTION
As twenty-first-century Christians, we must relate to the world, but the
question is, how do we relate to it? Some Christians isolate themselves
and develop a bunker mentality, while others are inattentive, viewing the
world as irrelevant and maintaining a kind of distant ignorance that lacks
sincere compassion. Still others, motivated by doing good to others, emulate the world and simply meld into the environment. In Passing Through:
Pilgrim Life in the Wilderness, Pastor Jeremy Walker offers us a helpful,
encouraging guide to making our way through this life as we root our
activities in our identity as disciples of Jesus Christ. He reminds us that we
need “the Word of God as our map and the Spirit of Christ as our compass”
in order to embrace our identity and pursue our activities to the praise
and glory of our God and Savior.
ENDORSEMENTS
“From Hebrew prophet to the New Testament sage who wrote Hebrews,
from the North African theologian Augustine to the French Reformer
John Calvin, God’s people have confessed that they are a pilgrim people.
And here, in a brief compass, we find the same truth about our identity
in Christ in this world: we are aliens and strangers, those who are ‘passing through.’ A timely reminder of who the Christian truly is.”
—Michael A. G. Haykin, professor of church history and biblical
spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
“It is easy to be either a settler or a tourist. When it comes to our relationship to the world in its current shape, the hardest thing is to be a pilgrim.
Passing by the glitz and glamor of Vanity Fair, Jeremy Walker reminds us
of the solid joys and lasting pleasures of Zion. This is a book not only to
be carefully read, but digested over time.”

Mercy Revealed:
A Christ-Centered Look at Christ’s Miracles
Gerald M. Bilkes
DESCRIPTION
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are filled with well-known
accounts of the miracles Christ performed. Christians love to reflect on
Christ’s healing of the Gadarene demoniac, His raising to life Jairus’s
daughter, and His bountifully providing food for five thousand hungry
listeners. But author Gerald M. Bilkes doesn’t want us to study these
miracles just because they are loved or well known. He wants us to
value them for what they teach us about Christ. He writes, “When we
study the miracles, we should never lose sight of the glorious and
magnificent Christ who performed them. He still performs miracles in
hearts and lives. . . . These things should astound us no less than the
miracles He did when He was on earth.” This heart-warming, experiential look at twenty-two of Christ’s miracles, with questions following
each chapter, is an excellent tool for personal or group Bible study and
will lead you to the cross, the empty tomb, and the God who purposed
and performed these important events of Scripture.

Fighting Satan: Knowing His Weaknesses,
Strategies, and Defeat
Joel R. Beeke
DESCRIPTION
If you are a true believer, Satan hates you because you bear the image
of Christ and because you were snatched from his power. You deserted
Satan, and he wants you back. He wants to sift you like wheat. While we
should not overestimate Satan’s power, to our peril we underestimate
an enemy who is living, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning.
Every Christian is in a battle that is fierce, spiritual, and necessary
between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus
Christ. We need to know the enemy—his personality, his strategies, his
weaknesses, and his defeat at Calvary and his final judgment.
In a day when society has in many ways placed itself under Satan’s
rule, when Satanism is flourishing in Western nations, when certain
branches of the church are preoccupied with “deliverance ministries,”
and when others deny the devil’s existence, Fighting Satan is a sober,
practical perspective on this vital subject. Joel R. Beeke states, “We
must know our enemy. . . . We must know how to withstand him and
what spiritual weapons to take up against him. We must defeat him by
faith through lives that bear fruit and spread the truth.”
With questions for reflection and discussion at the close of each
chapter, Fighting Satan is ideal for group and individual Bible study.
ENDORSEMENT
“Joel Beeke’s Fighting Satan anchors in the bedrock of a noble exposition of the Christian life viewed as homo viator (the pilgrim traveler)
embattled in a war with Satan at his heels. It is in the same line as
John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, William Gurnall’s Christian in Complete Armour, and Thomas Brooks’s Precious Remedies against Satan’s
Devices. Succinct and deeply pastoral, Dr. Beeke’s little volume has all
the marks of a Christian classic. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest
and get ready to fight the good fight of faith. This will help you view
the Celestial City and the assurance of Jesus Christ.”

Sabbathum Veteris et Novi Testamenti:
The True Doctrine of the Sabbath
Nicholas Bownd
Edited and Introduced by Chris Coldwell
DESCRIPTION
No book had more influence in confirming a Sabbatarian “heart” to Puritanism than
that of the parson of St. Andrews, Norton, Suffolk, Nicholas Bownd. The Doctrine of
the Sabbath was the first scholarly treatment defending the concept of the Christian
Sabbath or Lord’s Day, later embodied in the Westminster Standards. Not reprinted
since 1606, this influencial work is presented in a new critical edition.

“Nicholas Bownd’s work, The True Doctrine of the Sabbath, occupies a hugely
significant place among Puritan works on polemical and practical divinity. For
its scope, detail, and erudition, this work on the Sabbath is unparalleled in the
Puritan tradition—indeed, perhaps even in the Christian tradition. Particularly
illuminating are Bownd’s ‘spiritual exercises,’ which clearly had an influence upon
the later Puritan attitudes regarding the practical implications of Sabbath-keeping and worship. As an added bonus to the content of this book, the editorial
work on this book is first-class, and makes for far more enjoyable and easier reading than a simple re-print.”

The Happiness of Enjoying and Making
a True and Speedy Use of Christ
Alexander Grosse
Edited by Joel R. Beeke
DESCRIPTION
Alexander Grosse (1596–1654) was an able Puritan minister of presbyterian persuasion who wrote eight influential books from 1632 to 1656, none of which have been
reprinted until now. This book, with its intriguing title about making a speedy use of
Christ in every situation, is based on Colossians 2:9–10, “For in him dwelleth all the
fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all
principality and power.”
Grosse first sets forth Christ’s fullness as above all created fullness and shows us the
emptiness of everything compared to Christ. He contrasts the folly of not cleaving to
and contenting ourselves with Christ to the wisdom of valuing Christ above all else. He
then expounds how sinners come to Christ and obtain a saving interest in Him.
Next, Grosse stresses how to make use of Christ and how to constantly submit to
Him. He stresses the joy of those who are partakers of Christ and shows how believers
mature spiritually by communion with Him. Their fullness flows out of apprehending
the fullness of Christ. Finally, he expounds four marks that evidence the fullness of
believers and provides four motives to labor for more mature fullness in personal spiritual life in and through Christ. Two appendices are added to this excellent, experiential
Christ-exalting book—the first on the danger of neglecting Christ and the opportunity
of grace and the second on the Lord Jesus as the soul’s sure and last refuge.

The Communicant’s Spiritual Companion
Thomas Haweis
DESCRIPTION
In The Communicant’s Spiritual Companion, Thomas Haweis (surname rhymes with
“pause”) has provided us with a practical and heart-searching manual for determining
who is a worthy participant of the Lord’s Supper. After helpfully considering what a sacrament is, Haweis outlines the twin dangers of either neglecting or thoughtlessly partaking
of this ordinance. As Haweis makes clear, a participant who profits from the Lord’s Table
is one who has “found acceptance with God through the righteousness of the Savior, and
. . . experienced the mighty power of His grace on their souls.” Having established who
a worthy participant is, Haweis next gives valuable directions regarding what should be
considered before, during, and after Communion. In two concluding chapters, Haweis
offers various models of prayer for the Christian who struggles with it and then provides
brief meditations on key select passages of Scripture. In short, the design of The Communicant’s Spiritual Companion is to strengthen the Christian through an examination of the
Lord’s Supper, prayer, and the Word, three essential means of grace.

“The aim of this rich and searching little book by eighteenth-century Anglican minister
Thomas Haweis is to awaken in us a serious concern for eternity and a genuine interest in
the means of grace. It not only points us to Jesus as the only hope for sin-sick souls, but
will help you better understand and appreciate the Lord’s Supper, which seals to us the
blessings of His covenant of grace. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest!”

Developments in Biblical Counseling
J. Cameron Fraser
DESCRIPTION
Are you looking for a brief introduction to what the biblical counseling movement is and
how it has changed over the years? In Developments in Biblical Counseling, J. Cameron Fraser turns a journalistic eye to this question and presents a concise assessment. Introducing
us to the formative work of Jay Adams, Fraser outlines several themes of biblical counseling
that became foundational for the movement as a whole and observes how the movement
received criticisms from outside and made necessary developments from within. He points
out that some of these developments have an affinity with Puritan approaches to counseling that Adams rejects and may point in a more consistently biblical direction.
ENDORSEMENT
“Pastoral guidance for Christian living is as old as Christianity, but the Christian counseling
industry is a recent arrival that can hardly be said to have found its feet as of yet. Cautious,
canny, and clear, Cameron Fraser’s sympathetic unpacking of the Reformed segment of its
internal debate is a bonus for the bemused.”

Riots, Revolutions, and the Scottish Covenanters:
The Work of Alexander Henderson
L. Charles Jackson
DESCRIPTION
Coauthor of the famous Scottish National Covenant, moderator of the
Glasgow General Assembly that defied King Charles I, and member of the
Westminster Assembly, Alexander Henderson (1583–1646) led Scotland
during the tumultuous period of the British Revolutions. He influenced
Scotland as a Covenanter, preacher, presbyterian, and pamphleteer and
earned an important place in the nation’s history. Despite his numerous
accomplishments, no modern biography of Henderson exists. In Riots,
Revolutions, and the Scottish Covenanters, L. Charles Jackson corrects this
omission. He avoids the extremes of casting Henderson as a forerunner
to liberty or as a theological tyrant and instead places his actions in their
historical setting, presenting this important leader as he saw himself: primarily a minister of the gospel who was struggling to live faithfully as he
understood it. Using neglected and, in some cases, new sources, Jackson
reassesses the role of religion in early modern Scotland as reflected in the
life of Alexander Henderson.
ENDORSEMENTS
“There has long been a need for a modern, scholarly study of Alexander
Henderson, the most important clerical leader of the Scottish Covenanters. Charles Jackson’s carefully researched work helps us to understand
why Henderson was so effective and why his death in 1646 was such a
loss to the Covenanter movement. The book engages with a number of
debates among historians and highlights the importance of religion in
Covenanter ideology. It will be of particular interest to students of the
British Civil Wars, presbyterianism, and the Reformed tradition.”

“At last, a scholarly biography of Alexander Henderson, perhaps the greatest of the architects of post-Reformation presbyterianism. Henderson was
one of the key Scottish commissioners at the Westminster Assembly and
helped significantly to mold the Assembly’s documents into the timeless
theological legacy that has been bequeathed to the Reformed church in
particular, and the wider Christian church in general. Charles Jackson has
written an engaging, insightful, and stirring biography of one of Scotland’s greatest pastor-theologians. This is a book not just for history buffs
but for anyone interested in understanding the thinking and actions that
gave birth to a church polity and mindset that impacted the world, not

How Should We Develop Biblical Friendship?
Joel R. Beeke and Michael A. G. Haykin
DESCRIPTION
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend,” Proverbs 27:17 tells
us. God uses Christian friendships to help His children grow in grace and stay true to Christ.
But our twenty-first-century Western culture values individualism, busyness, and selfishness—
qualities that do not encourage deep, long-lasting, satisfying friendships. The authors guide us
through a practical survey of biblical and historical friendships, drawing principles from them
that will aid us in forming our own biblical friendships that will sharpen us for our Christian
journey in a world that is no friend to grace.

Why Should You Deny Yourself?
Ryan M. McGraw
DESCRIPTION
“Self-denial is one of the fundamental principles of the Christian life. It is Christianity 101,”
writes author Ryan McGraw. Christians, regardless of personal cost, must believe and do whatever Christ teaches them and reject and flee from whatever He forbids them. McGraw helps
readers develop an understanding of this essential principle of Christian living by providing an
in-depth explanation of what self-denial is and why it is important, and then giving examples
of what it looks like in practice.

The True Christian’s Love to the Unseen Christ
Thomas Vincent
Foreword by John MacArthur
DESCRIPTION
Vincent’s discourse is plain but the author has endeavored that it might be warm; his
design is more to advance his Master than himself, in your esteem; and if he has less of
your praise, so that his Lord may have more of your love—his great end is attained. The
main part of this book concerning the love of Christ is application, and about two thirds
of it is a variety of arguments and motives to stir up and provoke us to the love of Christ,
together with several directions on how to attain this love.

Thomas Vincent (1634–1678) was born in Hertford, England and educated at Westminster School, and Felsted School in Essex before being elected in 1648 to Christ s College,
Oxford (BA, 1652; MA, 1654). He served as catechist to John Owen. In 1657 he succeeded Thomas Case as rector of St Mary Magdalen, Milk Street, London, from where
he was ejected in 1662 under the Act of Uniformity. He then assisted Thomas Doolittle
at his Nonconformist Academy in Islington. When the Great Plague came in 1665 Vincent became the friend of the afflicted, offering comfort and assistance to the diseased
and dying. For the last twelve years of his life Vincent preached to a congregation in
Hand Alley, London, devoting himself to educating young people.
Piety: The Heartbeat of Reformed Theology
Joel R. Beeke
When was the last time you thought about being pious? The word tends to make us think of having a “holierthan-thou” attitude. But this negative view strays far from piety’s beginnings. Beeke reclaims the Reformers’
vision for an attractive piety rooted in the knowledge of God and our union with Christ. Focusing on both mind
and soul, he offers practical ways to cultivate a vibrant piety, helping you to grow in Christlikeness and in your
reverence and love for God. Bring harmony between your doctrine and practice, and bring glory to God as he
cultivates the fruit of the Spirit in your life. (P&R, PB, 37 pgs)

others in a spiritual brotherhood at Cambridge that espoused Puritan convictions. From 1584 until his death,
Perkins serves as lecturer, or preacher, at Great St. Andrew’s Church, Cambridge, a most influential pulpit
across the street from Christ’s College. He also served as a teaching fellow at Christ’s College, catechized students at Corpus Christi College on Thursday afternoons, and worked as a spiritual counselor on Sunday afternoons. In these roles Perkins influenced a generation of young students, including Richard Sibbes, John Cotton, John Preston,
and William Ames. Thomas Goodwin wrote that when he entered Cambridge, six of his instructors who had sat under Perkins
were still passing on his teaching. Ten years after Perkins’s death, Cambridge was still “filled with the discourse of the power of
Mr. William Perkins’ ministry,” Goodwin said. Perkins’s influence as a theologian continued unabated after his death. This was
due in large part to the widespread popularity of his writings. His writings were translated into several European languages and
greatly influenced British and American Reformed theology, the Dutch Further Reformation, and European Pietism. (EP Books,

Rejoicing in Lament: Wrestling with
Incurable Cancer & Life in Christ

God in all of this? This eloquently written book
shares Billings’s journey and reflections on providence, lament,

answers to show how our human stories of joy and grief can be

a baptism of suffering under the Japanese and Communists.

A Well-Ordered Church: Laying a Foundation for a Vibrant Church
William Boekestein and Daniel R. Hyde
“Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior.” No phrase
captures better the ethos of modern evangelical
Christianity. And while this is absolutely necessary for a Christian to believe and profess, what
typically gets lost in much evangelical thinking and acting
is Jesus’ church. This book seeks to present to evangelical
Christians the basics of ecclesiology, or, the biblical doctrine
of the church so that you might participate more fully in
the life of the body of Christ. (Evangelical Press, PB, 190 pgs)

Ulrich Zwingli
William Boekestein
“Combining the imagination employed in his
engaging children’s books, Bill brings the careful scholarship of a theologian to shine a brilliant light on the complexities and conflicts of
the ministry of Ulrich Zwingli. With warmth and
pastoral appreciation, he demonstrates the intense practical
implications of grappling with the issues that Zwingli faced,
and how Christians can gain perspective for life and ministry
in the church today.”—Douglas Bond (EP Books, PB, 163 pgs)

The Shorter Catechism Made Simple
Andrew Conway
Generations of Christians have found the
Westminster Shorter Catechism to be a wonderful
treasury of spiritual gold. Sadly, though, its beautiful 17th-century English has become further
removed from the language we use every day.
This brief book puts the catechism into modern English and
highlights the carefully arranged structure of the catechism—
a structure that in itself contains a great deal of wisdom.

Openess Unhindered
Rosaria Butterfield
Terms like same-sex marriage, sexual orientation
and gender identity are the stuff of news headlines and vitriolic social media posts. Enormous
controversy surrounds them. Dr. Butterfield goes
to great lengths to define the terms and to clarify
some of today’s key controversies including even going back
to God’s original design for marriage and sexuality as found in
the Bible. She cuts to the heart of the problems, and points the
way to the solution, which includes a challenge to the church
to be all that God intended it to be, and for each person to find
the true freedom that is in Christ. (Crown and Covenant, PB,

Lessons from Psalm 73
Iain D. Campbell
What should we do when what we know about
the character of God and how He acts is contradicted by our experience of the harsh realities of

Psalm 73, in which Asaph attempts to make sense of his experience using his own rational powers. We are shown how we—

The Heart of the Gospel: God’s Son Given
for You
Sinclair B. Ferguson
How can we truly know that God always does
what is best for us? Focusing on Romans 8:32,
Ferguson reminds us what lies at the heart of the
gospel. In the atonement, we behold the Father
who refused to spare His own Son—and the Son who was obedient in being delivered up on our behalf. If this is the kind of
God we have, and if this is what He has already shown us of
Himself, then we can confidently say He is for us. (P&R, PB, 23 pgs)

The Fountain of Life: A Display of Christ in

The Works of John Flavel, 6 Volumes
John Flavel
The repeated editions of Flavel’s Works bear their
own witness to his popularity. He was a favorite
with Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield
(who ranked him with John Bunyan and
Matthew Henry), and, a century later, with such
Scottish evangelical leaders as R. M. M’Cheyne and Andrew
Bonar. Flavel’s six volumes are in themselves a library of the best
Puritan divinity and a set will be a life-long treasure to those
who possess it. He is one of that small number of evangelical
writers who can by their lucidity and simplicity help those at the
beginning of the Christian life and at the same time be a strong
companion to those who near its end. (Banner, HC, 3667 pgs)

No Adam, No Gospel: Adam and the
History of Redemption
Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.
Doubts and denials swarm the biblical teaching
that humans descend from an original pair, Adam
and Eve. Some even claim that these doubts are
compatible with Christian commitment. But is
that possible? Gaffin shows how these denials undermine the
entire history of redemption taught in Scripture and reminds
us that with no Adam there is no gospel. (P&R, PB, 29 pgs)

Joseph: The Hidden Hand of God
Liam Goligher
Any glance at the first book of the Bible will
show that, in terms of sheer space, the story of
Joseph is of considerable importance. Although
no tribe is named after him, and the Messiah is
not descended from him, Joseph nonetheless
occupies a crucial role in the Bible’s drama of redemption.
Ultimately Joseph’s story is about God’s intention to save, not
just Joseph’s family, but His people throughout the world.

The Works of John Newton, 4 Volumes
John Newton
Newton has a firm place in the classics of Christian
literature. While his style is strong and clear, it is
the spiritual attractiveness and importance of his
main themes which secure the permanent value
of his writings. Most of his books came, unpremeditated, out of a need to help his congregation or individual
hearers, and it is in practical helpfulness towards Christian living that he excels. If he is loved rather than admired, it is for this
reason. Conformity to Christ is the one subject upon which his
themes ultimately focus. The text of this new four-volume edition of The Works of John Newton has been entirely reformatted, producing a clear and easily navigable set of documents
for today’s reader. (Banner, HC, 3032 pgs)

God’s Battle Plan for the Mind: The Puritan Practice of Biblical Meditation
David W. Saxton
During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the
spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is
either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind, Pastor David
Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate
them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through
numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing
on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential
theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word.

The Quest for the Historical Adam: Genesis, Hermeneutics, and Human Origins
William VanDoodewaard
“There are many reasons I am thankful for Dr. VanDoodewaard’s new book, The Quest for the Historical
Adam: Genesis, Hermeneutics, and Human Origins. VanDoodewaard’s survey of the history of interpretation and subsequent application to modern theological controversy surrounding Genesis 1–3 is just
the type of antidote needed to rectify careless theological reflection on this issue. This survey of the
history of interpretation is a wonderful step forward in the conversation and a necessary project in the
defense of biblical orthodoxy.”
