Rector’s Letter
Well done to everyone who have been involved in organising
and running the joint parish events in early September. On 7th
September an increase in the number of teams participating in
the Joint Parishes Golf Classic at Powerscourt Golf Club had
a very successful day with everyone enjoying the fine weather
and the immaculate golf course. Congratulations to Marcus
Magnier and his team who won the trophy. A special thank
you goes to our sponsors and to the golf club for all their
assistance and encouragement. The Classic raised €7,050
which will be divided between the parishes.
The weekend of 12th – 14th September marked the holding
of the Enniskerry Victorian Festival on Knocklinn Farm,
courtesy of the Heatley family. On Friday 12th the 2nd
Ragman’s Ball was held in the main marquee and a wonderful
evening was had by all with good food and dancing to the live
band. This was followed by increased numbers and additional
attractions at the Victorian Field Day on Sunday 14th. Calm,
sunny weather made this the most successful of these annual
festivals so far and a huge crowd attended to witness period
dress, craft and food village, vintage show, steam thrashing,
tug of war etc. etc. A highlight of this year was the special
arrival and display of the fully restored tractor of the late
Charlie Keegan which helped him win the world ploughing
championship in 1964, a very significant happening in those
days. Half of the significant proceeds will be given this year
to Lakers who do wonderful work in enriching the lives of
those with intellectual disability in the area. The event raised
€25,000, of which €12,500 will be donated to Lakers.
This had followed the Powerscourt Ploughing Match on the
previous day at the neighbouring farm of John Leeson when
5 ploughing societies took part and the special tractor was
a major attraction. It was delightful to have the extended
Keegan family present, together with the two other Irish
world champions of 1994, Martin Kehoe, and significantly
this year’s world champion Eamonn Treacy. Eamonn’s father
John who came second in the world 6 times was also present.
KILBRIDE HARVEST FESTIVAL will be held on Sunday
5th October at 3.00pm in Kilbride Church. The special
preacher will be Rev Adrienne Galligan, Rector of Crumlin
& Chapelizod and a former Student Reader in our parish.
On Sunday 12th October Powerscourt Family Harvest will
be held in Powerscourt Church at 11.30am. The special
preacher will be Canon Patrick Harvey, Rector of Abbeyleix.
Patrick has recently become the diocesan canon in St Patrick’s
Cathedral as Prebendary of Stagonil, the ancient name of our
parish. Children are asked to bring gifts of non-perishable
items to the service for distribution.
A SCHOOL SPONSORED WALK will be held on Sunday
5th October. Details and sponsorship cards are available
from the school. Sixth class will attend and participate in the
Diocesan Schools service in the Cathedral on Thursday 9th
October. Our school will attend the cathedral early to take
part in a percussion workshop, the results of which will be
used in the service.
THE MOTHERS’ UNION OPENING SERVICE will
take place in Kilbride Church on Wednesday 15th October
at 8.00pm.
KILBRIDE ANNUAL SUPPER DANCE will be held as
usual in Greystones Rugby Club on Friday 17th October at
8.30pm with the dinner served promptly at 9.00pm followed
by live music and dancing. Tickets are available from all vestry
members at €20, a fun night at reasonable cost.
Powerscourt Church will host the ANNUAL DIOCESAN
HEALING SERVICE on Sunday 19th October at 5.00pm.
Please pass the word about this special service to your
neighbours and friends and come to pray for your own healing
or for those you know.`
DIOCESAN SYNODS will be held on Tuesday 21st October
beginning with the Synod Service at 4.00pm. The United
Synods of Dublin & Glendalough are confined to one day this
year. Our parish has been asked to make a short presentation
on our experience of maintaining an open church and holding
daily prayer 3 times each day. Our representatives from the
parish are Jane Honner, Joyce Roe and Rachel Fraser. Robert
Neill is also a representative of the Diocesan Councils.
OPEN CHURCH AND DAILY PRAYER in Powerscourt
Church has been maintained since the beginning of Lent.
This will continue until All Saints’ Day, 1st November when
at 6.00pm there will be a special ‘Celebration of Memory
Service’. At this final Evening Prayer of the Open Church
Season those whose memory we treasure will be celebrated
and everyone is encouraged to be present and to submit the
names of their loved ones. While the church will not be
open every day during the winter until the following Ash
Wednesday a Daily Prayer Service will be held at 10.00am each
day. Others who cannot attend are encouraged to use their
smart phones or laptops/pads to follow the daily office on
http://ireland.anglican.org/worship/dailyprayer/. Those who
have cared for the open church and led the daily office during
the past 8 months are invited to take part in a special parish
quiet day in Glendalough on Saturday 25th October.
FORWARD DATES: Another Parish Forum is planned for
Sunday 16th November. This will be facilitated by Very Rev
Tom Gordon, Dean of Leighlin. A parish forum allows us to
examine the strengths and weaknesses of our parish and its
ministry and witness and to set priorities for the following 5
years. It helps us to focus upon the real needs of the parish
before we conduct a parish visitation in the New Year calling
for increased commitment of time, talent and finance.
It is hoped to start CONFIRMATION PREPARATION
CLASSES on Sunday 23rd November with confirmation
taking place on the 8th of March 2015. Please let the clergy
know if you would like to be part of this preparation as soon
as you can to help us with our preparation.

KILBRIDE CHURCH NOTES
Timmy Wallis’ daughter was married in Kibride Church on the
27th September. We wish them God’s blessing.
Our Harvest Festival will be on Sunday 5th October at 3.00pm
when our preacher will be Rev. Adrienne Galligan who was at one
time a student reader here. It will be good to meet up with her
again. Refreshments will be served following the service. We will
be decorating the church the day before and any help would be
much appreciated.
The next vestry meeting will be held on 10th October @ 8.00 pm
in the church.
Our Supper Dance will be on the 17th October in Greystones
Rugby Club. This always proves to be a very enjoyable night so
make sure to get your tickets from Georgina, 01 -2863512 or any
members of the vestry.
The Annual Missionary Sale will take place on Saturday 15th
November in the Parochial Hall in Enniskerry.

On Tuesday 9th September June Roe, Iris Sherwood and I
travelled in to the Diocesan Festival Service in Christchurch
Cathedral with Elizabeth Rountree who kindly drove. Our Area
President, Valerie King was also there so there was a reasonable
representation from our Branch. The Service was celebrated
by Archbishop Michael Jackson, assisted by our old friend the
Dean of Christchurch, Rev. Dermot Dunne. Our Chaplain, Rev.
David Mungavin gave the sermon and told us to be brave in trying
to live the Gospel life.
It was lovely to see so many members
from other branches and meet up with M.U friends and to be
there when seven members were commissioned to new areas of
responsibility on the Trustee Board, two of whom, Jessica Clarke
and Sylvia Graham gave us a most interesting talk a little while
ago. The Service was followed by a most welcome cup of tea and
cakes. Thank You to Iris for carrying our banner most graciously
and to Elizabeth for bringing us in to the city centre.

Breda Lilburn are going to help us plan the preparation of food
and wine for Christmas. This Meeting is open to parishioners and
friends so come along and join us if you are interested.

We are delighted to be back in the hall for our usual Friday
afternoons but we did meet up in July at Ballybrew and in August
at Lil’s for a lovely tea. This has become an annual event thanks
to Lilly’s girls. We all enjoy it very much. We are glad to welcome
Eva to our gatherings and soon hope to see Evelyn and perhaps a
few more. We could do with a couple of men at the table, so think
about it. It is great that Val has settled in to St John’s but we do
miss her on Fridays.
We are hoping to have a couple of speakers during this term and
of course we will have a day of bingo which is very popular too.

At the time of preparing these notes we are planning to
hold a Sunday lunch gathering, mainly but not exclusively
for these living alone. This will take place on Sunday 28th
September with maximum of 25 people. As this is a new
venture we will see how it goes and then will decide if we
do a repeat at a later date. If you are not on our current
list and would like to be included in the next date please
contacts Elizabeth.
CURATE COMMENTS
There was once a teacher who had a reputation for his
somewhat unorthodox views on life and living. None of his
work came in published form and so one day some students
set out to hear in person some of what he had to say.
Meeting them at his home, he asked them what it was they
wished to know. “Teacher,” they said, “we have heard that
you hold views on life and living that are somewhat unusual,
could you perhaps explain some of your philosophy to us?”
The teacher asked them how they had made the journey
to his home. “We came by car,” they replied. “Tell me what
you observed on your journey”
“We noticed that there were a great many cars exceeding
the speed limit, whilst there were others who drove
extremely slowly. There were some who drove carefully
and considerately. There were many, particularly cyclists
who did not obey the rules of the road, did not signal their
intentions or use the designated lane. We stopped off
briefly at a shopping centre where we observed that there
were special parking spaces for disabled drivers being
used by people who clearly were not disabled. What has
all this to do with your views of life?”
“It is quite simple,” said the teacher. “What you observed is
that how a person behaves when using the road will often
indicate just what sort of person they are.”
“Explain to us the parable of the road users,” the students
asked. “Those whom you saw exceeding the speed limit
are the people who are always in a hurry, they believe they
are important but do not allocate the correct amount of
time to complete the task they have in hand. They rush
through life giving no heed to what is happening around
them. The slow drivers are those who do not take risks or
feel the need to make changes. They reach their destination
but add nothing to the gaiety of life. Those who do not
obey the rules of the road are the careless ones of this
this world. They believe that they can do as they please
without thought for the greater good of society. Those
who took parking spaces designed for others are selfish
and self-indulgent. Cocooned in their own, self-centred
ways they care nothing for the needs of others. “But what
of the careful drivers? You did not mention them. “Indeed,
a few are caring and considerate of others. “But we saw
more than just a few like this.”
Indeed you did my child, those were the ones with penalty
points on their licence!

Enniskerry Walking Association
The Enniskerry Walking Association was formed in 2004 to
protect traditional walking routes in the area and to promote
walking for recreation, for health, as a safe alternative to car
use, and to help us all to learn more about our locality. Our
popular Tuesday evening walks usually meet at the Spar in
Enniskerry at 7.00 pm. Saturday walks meet at 1.30pm. All
who are interested, adults or children, are most welcome.
Walks vary in length but most last between one-and-a half
and two-and-a-half hours; some (but not all) involve a bit
of climbing. Please wear appropriate warm and rain-proof
clothing, and proper walking boots for the occasional
muddy or rocky track. Some walks are designated below
as not suitable for dogs and you should bring a lead if you
take a dog on other walks.
In the interests of walker’s comfort & safety participants
are asked to respect the directions of the walk leader
and stay between the leader and the anchor person.

Temple Carrig School is a co-educational, non-fee paying
school under the patronage of the Church of Ireland. On
1st September 2014, it opened its doors to its first intake
of pupils, 132 in number, starting in 1st year. Temple Carrig
School will operate from temporary accommodation until
summer 2015 when it will move into its new building.
The school is situated beside the Gaelscoil and Educate
Together Schools at Blacklion, Greystones.

The Board of Management under the leadership of its
chairman, Garrett Fennell and the Headmaster Alan Cox
are to be highly commended for this achievement, which
built upon the vision of Rev Baden Stanley and others in the
past few years. The enthusiasm of the general population
for this development has raised its own challenges in trying
to cope with the amazing push for entrance to the school
and the Board has had to work very hard to be fair in
allocating places in the school.

St Patrick’s Church, Greystones on the eve of the opening

at the usual time of 10am, and if anyone has harvest items could
you drop them in on the morning. The veg all goes to the Five
Loaves S helter for the homeless in Bray and the groceries from
the children go to the Bray Women’s Refuge
