Area Track Meets - Pros & Cons
By Ray Baca
TGCA Track & Field Committee Chair
The TGCA Track Committee was recently
asked to give their opinion on the possibility of
changing the post-season qualifying format for
track & field, in conferences 2A through 5A. The
change that was specifically discussed was the
addition of the Area track meet. Conference 1A
currently uses this format; therefore, the discussion focused on conferences 2A through 5A.
Discussion on this topic was brought forth with
the idea of enhancing the Regional meet and
also cutting costs to schools.
The TGCA Track Committee is made up of 16
members. There are two members elected from
each of the eight TGCA regions. One member
from each region represents conferences 1A-3A
and one member represents conferences 4A-5A.
So, there is an elected member for each group
of schools in every region of the state.
Each member was asked to express their
thoughts on the issue of adopting an Area track
meet in Conferences 2A to 5A.
For those not familiar with the Area track meet,
here is an explanation. First, each district would
have their District meet. The top four competitors in each event, at District, would advance to
the Area meet. At the Area meet, there would
be eight competitors in each event. Of these
eight competitors, the top four would advance
the next weekend to the Regional meet. Under the current UIL classification plan there are
eight districts in each region; therefore, there
would be four Area meets in each region. With
four area meets each qualifying four competitors in each event, the total competitors in each
event at Regional would be sixteen. This would
give us the same number of competitors at the
Regional that we had before the UIL allowed the
current system of three from District to Regional,
which brings the total number of competitors in
each event to twenty-four. This process would
eliminate the “regional qualifier meet” weekend,
as this would become the Area weekend.
Here is an example of this process, using this
calendar year’s dates. On the April 17-18 weekend, District 1 has its District meet. The top four
competitors in the 100 meters will advance to
compete against the top four competitors in the
100 meters from District 2 on the weekend of
April 24-25. These eight 100 meter Area finalists will now compete for the top four spots that
will advance to the Region meet on the weekend
of May 1-2. And as the current system allows,
the top two places at the Region meet will advance to the State meet on the weekend of May
15-16.
As you can see, this would be a major change
to the current system used by the UIL.
Over the past several weeks many “pros” and
“cons” have been given.
Pros consist of:
1) The Regional meet would become more
manageable for meet directors.
2) The Regional meet would be more competitive from top to bottom. There would less likely
be “unqualified” competitors that now make it
under the current system.
3) A great deal of money would be saved by
2
schools not having to send so many athletes to
the Regional meet, usually having to spend at
least one night.
Cons consist of:
1) Coaches would lose the “luxury” of giving
athletes the weekend after District off, if needed
for injury purposes.
2) Athletes would be less likely to make it to
the Regional meet, but they would still be allowed their eight invitational meets anytime
during the school year.
3) In most cases, schools wouldn’t have as
many athletes representing them at the Regional meet.
4) Athletes would be expected to be in “top
form” three weeks in a row.
The debate currently continues and will continue for the coming weeks. The TGCA Track
and Field Committee will formally meet on May
14 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss this matter and other
issues concerning track and field in the UIL. If
you have any thoughts on this issue please contact your TGCA track and field committee representative. You can find your representative
