INTERACTIVE The Bishop Strachan School 2014–15 Community Report DONORS BSS is nothing if not active; constantly moving, stretching and growing. 2MESSAGES 4 INTERACTIVE: A YEAR AT BSS 18 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 22 OUR DONORS 2 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT And it all happens in relationship – between student and teacher, student and student, parent and teacher, and an endless combination of meetings of the mind, heart and spirit. What is the outcome of these relationships? What changes over the course of one year at BSS when people interact meaningfully with each other? The answer is lots. Explore the 2014 –15 school year – made dynamic and memorable by the contributions of our engaged, and engaging, community. DONORS Rob Grundleger and Deryn Lavell MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL BSS experienced another dynamic year in 2014 –15. We introduced the Signature of a BSS Girl, began laying plans for our upcoming 150th anniversary, broke ground on our state-of-the art facility upgrade and, as always, supported the energy and creativity of our girls. From a fundraising perspective, last year was indeed one of our most successful. Thanks to our donors we launched our Intersection campaign in the fall and achieved impressive gains throughout the year, as you’ll read more about within these pages. The sheer volume of supporters from our entire community of alumnae and families has shown our girls that BSS stands together and has faith in their futures. It’s an important message that has resonated throughout the school. Groundbreaking individual donations have had significant impact in getting us closer to our goal, demonstrating a new level of generosity from our community and a reaffirmation of your confidence in our mission. That mission, of course, is to provide BSS girls with a learning environment that empowers them to be self-assured, inquisitive, bold and compassionate. We believe our girls benefit not only from a program of powerful learning that inspires them to achieve excellence in all areas of academics, but encourages them to learn beyond the classroom and 4 discover their individual traits, passions and challenges. You will find much has been accomplished in our quest to continually evolve our program to better meet the needs of our girls in this year’s Markers of Progress, available online at bss.on.ca/report. Thanks to our outstanding faculty, staff and Senior Leadership Team, we have moved forward on a variety of critical initiatives. Their innovation has been supported by the careful stewardship of financial resources. For that we thank our Finance Committee, as well as our highly committed Board of Governors for their strategic oversight. In her first year as Chair, Cindy TRIPP ’82, has been a decisive leader who has embraced her responsibilities with great skill and has been an exceptional source of support and strength for me. I thank both Cindy and our Board of Governors for their commitment to the team at BSS and the vision we share. I also thank our Board of Trustees and Trustee Chair, Rob Grundleger, also in his first year in this role, at the same time as he assumed the role of Campaign THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT Chair. His presence as both a Governor and a Trustee for the past 12 years make him uniquely experienced to take on the challenge of a major campaign in addition to the responsibilities of the Trustees. He has been an extraordinary leader in this role and we are all very grateful for his long-standing involvement with BSS. BSS is an ambitious school and a culture that strives to continuously improve by questioning the ‘givens’ and exploring new ideas. Thanks to this shared vision, our students are thriving in an atmosphere that supports taking risks and challenging convention while building a community that embraces change and difference. I’m very proud to be part of this exceptional school. Deryn Lavell Head of School “The culture of philanthropy at BSS continues to deepen, and there is no clearer evidence of this than the success of the 2014 –15 Annual Fund.” MESSAGE FROM CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES I am delighted to report on our Foundation activities from this past fiscal year. The energy of the Intersection campaign, and the philanthropic spirit of the BSS community – parents, Old Girls, grandparents, friends and staff – has been wonderful to see, and to be a part of. A part of creating a sustainable institution involves maintaining a strong endowment focused on the long-term financial health of the school. The Trustees of The Bishop Strachan Foundation are entrusted with funds endowed by our community of visionary and progressive donors. The BSS Endowment stands at $22.7 million (as of June 30, 2015). The total value of all funds at the end of June 2015 was $23.8 million. Over the course of the 2014–15 year, the Investment Committee was diligent in making adjustments to the asset mix resulting in positive investment performance. As a result, our endowment balance at the end of the fiscal year represents a $1.3 million increase over the previous year’s balance of $21.4 million at June 30, 2014. The culture of philanthropy at BSS continues to deepen, and there is no clearer evidence of this than the success of the 2014–15 Annual Fund, which surpassed $1 million for the first time in the school’s history, and the successful launch of our campaign, Intersection. This year represented the first year of the Public Phase of the campaign and resulted in total fundraising of $4.5 million in new gifts and pledges. While the majority of gifts were received in support of the building project, donors also provided strong support for both the Innovation Fund and Community Fund. I thank the BSS community for the many and varied parts they have played in this success. I wish to single out my fellow Co-Chair, Richard Bradlow, of the Development Committee, Development Committee members, Campaign Cabinet and Leadership Gifts Committee. I also wish to thank those with whom we work so closely, Head of School Deryn Lavell, Chair of the Board of Governors Cindy TRIPP ’82 and Moira Dossetor and her team in the Office of Philanthropy and Alumnae Relations. Finally, on behalf of the Board of Trustees I would like to congratulate and thank the faculty, staff, parents, students and Old Girls at BSS for a very successful year. Rob Grundleger Chair, Board of Trustees 2014–15 See Rob’s full message at bss.on.ca/report 5 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT At the core of any strong relationship is good communication – finding that place where divergent opinions are welcome, and respected. Every BSS student in Junior, Middle or Senior School – whether an introvert or extrovert – is encouraged to explore her own thoughts, form a sound argument, consider all angles and present her position confidently. This past year saw our girls work hard to meet high academic expectations and standards, while they grew in other profound and important ways, by finding – and using – their own strong voice. GIRL TALK 6 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT Our 2014–15 Girl Talk awareness campaign resonated with our community because BSS is all about conversations that matter. Inspired by a Grade 11 student and her work with the Moral Courage Task Force, Girl Talk encouraged a new view of world problems and generated conversations on the role we can all play in solutions. Throughout the year, Girl Talk posters were displayed on campus, while across the school, the volume was raised for both students and staff on important issues of inclusion, social justice, co-operation and collaboration. You are welcome. We put a high priority on making BSS a welcoming place – so the new girl in Junior Kindergarten or Grade 9 feels just as comfortable as the graduating student entering her last year at BSS. Head of School Deryn Lavell started the year with a call out to “lend a hand and help the new members of our community get oriented and feel at home.” Our student and adult Buddy Program volunteers did just that, by reaching out to new families and students and making their landing at BSS a little bit softer. A Mission Systems Engineer at MDA Space Missions (aka rocket scientist) and fierce advocate for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Natalie Panek was one of dozens of speakers who came on campus this year to teach and inspire. Presented by The Joan WHITTEN Miller ’76 Leadership Series, Natalie spoke with students about the next generation of Canadian space robotics and space exploration programs. Natalie is thanked for her efforts by students Andrea GONZALEZ ’15 (left) and Bezawit ALEMU ’15. 7 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT DONORS AT THE INTERSECTION “We were inspired to support the Campus Fund, one of Intersection’s three priorities. It’s clear that the new spaces reflect the school’s powerful approach to teaching and they will serve the future generations of BSS girls so well. We think it’s important to be involved and support all of our children’s schools, which is why we have chosen to give equally to BSS and to our son’s school. We’re proud to have our family’s names associated with this initiative.” Todd Hargarten and Sarah Morgenstern, active volunteers for Intersection, members of the Leadership Gifts Committee and parents of Tess, Class of 2018, and Laine, Class of 2022, students at BSS since Junior Kindergarten. We publicly launched Intersection in October 2014 and, wow, did our community get behind it! Why? Because our parents, alumnae, staff and students believe in BSS and our vision for a bolder future, where science meets art, mind meets spirit and past meets future. They met at the intersection and set in motion a direct path to even more innovation in girls’ education – raising over $25 million of our $35 million target, the largest fundraising goal in our history. For more information about Intersection or to help reach our target, contact Jonelle Istead, Campaign Director, in the Office of Philanthropy and Alumnae Relations at jistead@bss.on.ca or 416-483-4325, ext. 1822. For a full listing of Intersection supporters, see page 22. 8 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT INTERSECTION COMMUNITY FUND “I have a message of great thanks to the donors who support Financial Assistance through the Community Fund.” Kaitlin TSE ’15, BSS alumna, member of Canada’s under 18 women’s hockey team, Harvard University student Junior School student Sophia and teacher (and BSS alum) Lia ROBERTSON MacLeod ’98 explore wildlife in a neighbourhood ravine. INTERSECTION CAMPUS FUND “People build buildings because they dream. And because they want possibility. We’ve been thinking about this building as not something for the next 10 years or 15 years, but for the next 50 years.” Dr. Angela Terpstra, Principal, Senior School INTERSECTION INNOVATION FUND “Our teachers are second to none because they never stop learning. They tap into the world’s very best practices in girls’ education and apply it to everyday learning at BSS. Add to that the diverse speakers we bring in year round, and our students have outstanding access to transformative information and hands-on initiatives.” Mary Anne Van Acker, Assistant Head, Innovation & Technology, BSS Professional Learning Committee Architect’s rendering of the new BSS Art Studio POWERFUL LEARNING Junior School students perform for parents at May 2015 Momentum This year, our Culture of Powerful Learning was humming at a high level – moving deftly in and around obstacles, striving to support every kind of learner, bringing girls out of their comfort zone into the place where real learning happens, and shining a light on ways to think differently, take more responsibility, include others, build things anew. When visitors to BSS talk about a palpable energy on campus, they are feeling this culture, where girls are challenged in the most valuable ways and where they come to understand they don’t have to do everything, but they can do anything and do it with their whole heart and mind. 10 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT After intensive research and collaboration, this year we introduced the Signature of a BSS Girl, a framework to help students develop specific attributes: curiosity, self-awareness, grit, voice and leadership. These are viewed through the lens of Growth Mindset when focused on the self, and Ethical Citizenship when focused on the self in relation to others. Think of it as a roadmap to inner space. BSS Investigations&Expressions Educators from around the province were on campus to learn from our Junior School faculty about creating collaborative and vibrant learning environments. From one participant: “I am so moved by your relationships, listening to each other and the children, and using that to move forward and promote relationships.” LIFE IN BSS BOARDING What better way to add to our multiplicity of viewpoints and voices than to welcome 75 girls from 17 different countries around the world to BSS Boarding. This year, BSS students explored new dimensions of themselves by experiencing some of the hundreds of diverse co-curricular programs on offer. A global mindset isn’t just our philosophy – it’s our practice. Global experiences this year included trips for Grade 7–12 students to Arizona, Ecuador (pictured here), Jamaica and Spain. COMMUNITY SPIRIT “As the culmination of 17 years of involvement at BSS, we were thrilled to lead the Class of 2015 Scholarship Fund initiative. Thanks to the incredible work of our Co-Chairs, Bruce and Lisa Rothney, and Tony Gaffney and Dee Patterson, we were able to leave a significant and lasting legacy in honour of our girls. We were inspired by the dedication of the girls themselves, who achieved 100% participation in fundraising, and overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our fellow Class of 2015 parents. This is a clear reflection of our gratitude for all that BSS has done for our daughters, and our hope that future generations will have the same opportunities.” Kate BERGHUIS Stevenson ’81 and John Stevenson, Co-Chairs of The Class of 2015 Scholarship Committee 12 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT The spirit of sharing Our volunteer achievements surpassed expectations in so many ways this past year. Our Annual Fund hit (and exceeded) the $1 million mark for the first time in our history, which would not have been possible without the commitment of our parent volunteers. We thank all of our donors who made the decision to support BSS and we thank the Stevenson family who, along with their dedicated team of parent volunteers, led the way to raising an unprecedented contribution of $178,000 from this year’s graduating class. This donation goes directly to our Financial Assistance program to welcome bright young girls to BSS who might otherwise not have the opportunity to attend. What a generous, meaningful legacy. The Parent Association had a tremendous year, thanks to all BSS parents who shared their time and talents to strengthen the BSS community. As Co-Chairs of the Parent Association Executive, Julie Crossland and Marla Switzer led 42 parent members in the important roles of welcoming new parents, helped by the newly developed position of Welcome Committee Chair, and friendraising, with a focus on parent socials. We love our BSS parents! For more information about the Annual Fund or the Class Scholarships, please contact Melissa Beauchamp, Director, Annual Giving and Constituent Relations, in the Office of Philanthropy and Alumnae Relations at mbeauchamp@bss.on.ca or 416-483-4325, ext. 1875. It’s hard to tell who is more spirited – the girls or their teachers! Senior School students Anya and Isabel count donations the Philanthropy Council raised through this year’s theme days and Spirit Week activities. An inspiring example of community spirit, the Council supports a community in Mali and a child in Kenya through Plan Canada, maintains a disaster relief fund and supports local communities. Every year for the last 30, we have welcomed a different author to BSS – each highly accomplished and excited to share his or her insights – thanks to the communityminded Hill Canadian Authors Fund. This year, we welcomed Claire Battershill, Canadian author of Circus and winner of CBC’s 2008 Literary Award for Short Fiction, to help celebrate 30 years of the Fund. BSS thanks the visionary support of the Hill family: Harry and Alverna Hill, Meredith HILL Robitaille ’76, Megan HILL ’78, Marta HILL ’81, Paisley HILL ’85, Sarah CRANSTON ’09 and Grace Garvey, Class of 2018. DONORS PROUD HERITAGE There’s excitement in the air as we draw closer to our 150th anniversary in 2017. BSS is that rare combination of proud heritage and powerful future. And that’s because of our steadfast mission – an unwavering commitment to girls and their boundless potential. This year, we celebrated 100 years at our campus, at the same time as we set out to transform it to align more closely with our curriculum and culture. Around the world, 6,000 alumnae who spent their formative years at BSS continue to pursue excellence while they stay in touch – some many decades later – with their classmates and the place that set them off on their inspired journey. The Quiet Room of our Student Centre became a walk through history this year as some of our Museum & Archives imagery came to life on the walls, displaying highlights of campus life from our very first building in 1867 to our latest, set to open in 2017. 16 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT Volunteer staff and students welcomed the wider community in May to celebrate our 100th year at our current campus, and what better way to do that than to participate in Doors Open Toronto? It was pretty exciting for the BSS community to watch the Pan Am Games in Toronto this past summer. We had two staff members carry the torch through communities before the Games began, then three alumnae competing at the highest levels, including badminton players Rachel HONDERICH ’14, left (silver, singles and bronze, women’s doubles) and Alex BRUCE ’08 (silver, mixed doubles and bronze, women’s doubles). The transformation of the Great Hall for this year’s Heritage Dinner was extraordinary. It set the scene for a warm evening attended by many BSS community members who braved the February cold to celebrate our heritage and to reconnect. This year’s Distinguished Old Girl Award was presented at Heritage Dinner to author, health professional and stress management consultant Claire JEPHCOTT McDerment ’56, who developed the Kids Have Stress Too! ® Program, used by parents, childcare providers and teachers, and offered in every province by local trainers and facilitators. Our grads make us enormously proud. We shared their fears, failures, discoveries and celebrations this year – all part of the learning process. And they experienced the school’s struggles and successes as well. All of us at BSS understand that the most profound growth comes from that place of risk, where you stretch yourself – without fully knowing the outcome – until you discover strength and skills you might never have imagined. We see the potential of our girls when they first step onto campus, and we see it realized beautifully when they leave. If we’ve done our job right, their learning will never cease, nor their desire to help themselves, and others, reach new heights. GRADUATION DAY 18 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT 2014–15 Head Girl and Valedictorian Hannah Lee takes a selfie of her and her fellow grads. An enduring tradition, our graduates perform just before they leave BSS for the last time, as a student. (We know they’ll be back on campus soon!) This was the first year that all Grade 12s wore the white uniform blazer (previously restricted to Prefects). The move was a reflection of a changing student leadership framework to ensure a wider scope of leadership opportunities for a greater number of students and to demonstrate the value BSS places on all expressions of leadership. Class of 2015 This year’s graduation ceremonies were full of laughs and tears, and a host of awards for outstanding student achievement. Here, BSS Alumnae Association Chair Anne SMALLMAN Gallagher ’81 presents the law award to Jenny LI ’15. Earlier in the year, Jenny was honoured for a perfect score on her Advanced Placement (AP) Microeconomics exam in spring 2014. Of the 74,049 students who wrote that exam, Jenny was one of only 15 students in the world to earn every possible point (90 out of 90) on this exam – a remarkable and rare achievement. For more student awards and achievements, see the BSS Markers of Progress in the online version of this 2014–15 Community Report at bss.on.ca/report The love of learning our students develop at BSS takes them far – not just in their education, but in their lives. Some of these funds support specific program areas, capital improvements or speaker series, but the vast majority provide financial support for girls who would otherwise not have access to a BSS education. While some donors have made endowed gifts which have an impact in perpetuity, some have chosen to make significant expendable gifts that are paid out immediately, and still others have preferred to make a blended gift that has an impact over a series of years. The following list represents these donors who chose named funds as a means to expand the opportunities for BSS girls.* We thank all our donors for their foresight. * Funds listed had a balance of $50,000 or more by June 30, 2015 Balance at June 30 2015 2014 Balance at June 30 $ 290,172 $ 280,373 The 21st Century Scholarship Fund 147,981 140,941 Anonymous Financial Aid Fund 324,568 350,080 The Arrell Family Bursary Fund 168,654 162,960 79,212 75,444 The John and Jocelyn Barford Family Bursary Fund 274,899 265,617 The Bitove Family Bursary Fund 100,358 96,969 The Marjorie Gregg Memorial Bursary Fund 76,692 73,620 The Grundleger Fund The BSS Old Girls’ Association Bursary Fund 243,841 209,403 The BSS Parent Association Bursary 206,266 186,930 The Burry Family Bursary 70,771 68,381 The Peter Buzzi and Deborah Wightman Scholarship Fund 57,206 53,466 The Rosemary CARDY ’72 Memorial Bursary Fund 68,091 63,618 The Chapman Family Bursary 135,923 131,333 The Cheuk Family Bursary Fund 230,613 222,826 The Clarus Innovation Fund 118,420 112,787 The Leta MACDONELL Currer ’65 Memorial Scholarship 74,041 70,043 The Alice LANGSTAFF Derry ’22 Bursary Fund 67,542 64,295 The Devine Family Bursary 634,463 613,037 The Catherine and Nicky Eaton Hertiage Fund 111,237 92,987 Emma’s Gift 363,534 331,934 64,253 62,083 155,097 147,718 62,301 58,219 The 125th Board and Trustees Bursary Fund The Award for Teaching Excellence The Brown Family Bursary The Federer Family Fund The Flynn Family Bursary Fund The Gaffney/Patterson Fund 28 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2014–15 COMMUNITY REPORT The Nicola GALLOWAY ’85 Memorial Bursary Fund The General Bursary Fund 2015 2014 78,158 75,518 $ 1,266,000 $ 1,222,330 The General Endowment Fund 2,061,116 1,964,260 The General Scholarship Fund 548,396 522,307 The Goldring Family STEM Fund 202,500 195,662 The Gordon-MaGee Family Fund 107,119 101,569 58,798 56,812 114,507 79,468 The Richard and Gwen Harvey Family Fund 68,329 66,022 The Hawkrigg Family Bursary 76,080 73,511 Haynes-Connell Community Service Fund 187,826 181,484 The Heritage Fund 122,826 118,678 The Barbara LOGIE Heward ’21 Bursary Fund 167,299 145,215 The Kathleen HOW Hewitt ’19 Memorial Bursary Fund 179,209 173,157 The Dorothy Beattrice Higgs Memorial Bursary Fund 65,355 63,148 The Hill Canadian Authors Fund 78,186 70,376 The John Hodgins Bursary Fund 189,415 182,729 The Hugessen Family Bursary Fund 128,915 124,562 The Donald F.
