The Center is the Past, Present &
Future of the Arts in Crested Butte!
MEANINGFUL NON-PROFIT
PARTNERSHIPS CREATE
EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS!
2013 WAS AN INCREDIBLE YEAR FOR THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS!! We discovered
that the Center has tripled our program offerings over the past three years through our
unique partnerships with the essential arts nonprofits in our community. No other arts
organization has the vast array of partnerships that the Center has in Crested Butte.
These partnerships are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Crested Butte Dance Collective
Crested Butte School of Dance
The Art Studio
Crested Butte Film Festival
Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational
The Trailhead Children’s Museum
• Crested Butte Community School
Enrichment Program
• Crested Butte Wine and Food
Festival
• The Arts Alliance of the East
River Valley
The Center impacts the community with 350 annual programs and partnerships
across a range of art: music, visual arts, children’s programming, dance, culinary, and
film. The Center is also THE leader in coordinating arts efforts in the area through the
Arts Alliance of the East River Valley. These efforts all combine to build community in
Crested Butte.
And we are just getting started!
Once a grassroots startup, today Center for the Arts Crested Butte is the cultural hub
of the Gunnison Valley for live music concerts including blues, jazz, bluegrass, classical,
folk, rock, country, funk and more. Our live outdoor concert series, Alpenglow, enlivens
the community with free entertainment on Monday nights during the summer.
Professional dance performances range from ballet to modern to burlesque. Traveling
productions and local theater productions all find a place at the Center.
The Center for the Arts is also a home for visual arts exhibitions, classes and local
performing arts. The Art Studio annex at 111 Elk Avenue offers creative workshops
including watercolor, ceramics, photography, jewelry making and more. The Crested
Butte Dance Collective’s classes range from aerial to African and salsa to swing. The
Piper and Art Studio Galleries serve as career-enhancing home for local artists.
What’s next for the Center?
Our vibrant, friendly town needs a larger, multi-functional Center for the Arts in
Crested Butte that will meet the growing demands of and interest in the arts for all the
years ahead — and that will ensure that the arts will remain a key factor in the quality of
life and the economic health of our community.
With the rapid growth of local arts programs and increasing event attendance, a
larger, more advanced facility is vitally important. The facility is also overcrowded in its
support spaces and in the rehearsal and performance areas that are at the heart of the
Center. Partner programs with burgeoning enrollment often have difficulty scheduling
rehearsals and classes because of our space limitations. In addition, many of the Center’s
spaces are not accessible to those with special needs. The Piper Gallery, while it is an
incredible place for local visual artists to showcase their work, is not wheelchairaccessible; neither are the offices nor the stage.
We look forward to sharing the story of the Center and our critical role in bringing
the community together. We are the past, present and future of the arts in Crested Butte.
Together, we’ll make great things happen.
Most Sincerely,
JENNY BIRNIE
Executive Director

A REPORT ON THE FISCAL YEAR
NOV. 1, 2012 THROUGH OCT. 31, 2013
IN 2013 THE CENTER WELCOMED OVER 33,000 PEOPLE THROUGH ITS DOORS through 624 separate events — 277 being
produced by the Center alone. Of these, 57 were Center presentations, 158 rental events (for non-profits such as the School of Dance,
Music Festival, Avalanche Center, High Country Conservation Advocates, Search and Rescue and the Public Policy Forum), 136
rehearsals and six school events. There were over 20 Piper Gallery and Art Studio Receptions for local and regional artists. The Crested
Butte Dance Collective held 52 classes serving over 650 dancers, in addition to conducting 146 rehearsals on the Center Stage. Their
annual sell-out smash hit Move the Butte currently entertains over 1,000 dance enthusiasts. The Art Studio conducted over 90 days of
instruction to over 500 budding artists at our satellite campus at 111 Elk Avenue, with several hundred more in private lessons, Shared
Artist Space participants and art browsers to the gallery. Through our partnership with the Crested Butte Film Festival we offered 24
films to 857 film aficionados through the Monthly Film Series and hosted over 1,200 during the film festival itself. As the sponsor of
the Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival we helped educate and entertain 750 oenophiles. Our annual fundraising series, Tour de
Forks, hosts almost 800 epicureans in private homes with dinners prepared by the region’s accomplished chefs.
As each day passes, we are adding more classes, more workshops, more opportunities for the visual arts, more invigorating
performances in the arts. Through all of this it is our vision, our mission and our values that guide our every move.

THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS —
THE PLAN FOR A NEW
COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER
THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS IS BURSTING AT THE SEAMS. Since its founding
28 years ago, the Center’s programming and demand for the Arts in Crested
Butte have grown by several orders of magnitude. The Center serves as a convener
of the community’s arts and education organizations that have propelled this
growth.
Arts is central to the Crested Butte identity and sense of community. This
growth and culture has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally. This
project seeks to build a new home for the Center for the Arts that would reflect
its importance to the community and create a literal town center.
The Center impacts the community with 350 annual programs and
partnerships across a range of art: music, visual arts, children’s programming,
dance, culinary, and film. The Center is also THE leader in coordinating arts
efforts in the area through the Arts Alliance of the East River Valley. These efforts
all combine to build community in Crested Butte.
Year-round programming
The Center is a community-based facility that offers a performing and visual
arts venue that provides programming year-round. The Center provides
opportunities for local performers and visual artists to showcase their talents.
But, there is also an incredible list of world-class performers who have come to
Crested Butte and performed at the Center for the Arts including Arlo Guthrie,
Junior Brown, Los Lobos, Robert Earl Keen, and Lisa Marie Presley. And although
our guests may have seen these amazing performers in New York, San Francisco,
or Dallas, nothing compares to the intimate setting of the Crested Butte Center
for the Arts. They can see every pick of the guitar, every toe point in the ballet
shoe and every extra gasp for air. An event at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts
often feels like a private performance.
Essential community partnerships
The Center launched additional programs and partnerships such as the Art
Studio and the Crested Butte Dance Collective in response to community needs
and organizational desires. However, the current Center structure lacks to the
space to truly accommodate these growing curriculum and relationships. The
Center needs a space that can and will commensurate to the increased impact
these arts opportunities are already bringing to the Center.
Through the broad range of programs and partnerships, the Center for the
Arts is truly the Center of the Community.
To fund the Center for the Arts’ new facility and support the growth of its
programs, the Center’s Board of Directors has launched a $15 million campaign
with the theme Creative Impact. The campaign will provide $12 million to design,
construct, furnish, and equip the new state-of-the-art facility that will meet the
Center’s needs for the years to come. It will also provide $3 million to support
ongoing operations of the facility, an important element that will ensure that the
new space can be maintained and operated as beautifully in 2025 as it is the day
it opens its doors.
We are reaching out to local and national philanthropic foundations, the
Crested Butte business community, and especially generous individuals and
families to complete our campaign successfully. We welcome support from those
who live in our community year round, those who call our town home for one
or two seasons during the year, and those who visit us only occasionally. We
welcome gifts both large and small, and hope that our community will invest in
our future as it has helped us build our history.
Please join us.

NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH
DISTINGUISHED FESTIVAL
Crested Butte Film Festival,
Summer Season 2013
THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE IT’S NEW partnership
with the Crested Butte Film Festival.
“Over the last few years, the Center has been building incredible partnerships
with like organizations such as the Crested Butte Dance Collective and the Art
Studio. We are thrilled to now create a relationship with the Crested Butte
Film Festival,” stated Melissa Belkin, President of the Center for the Arts
Board of Directors. “The Film Festival have been such a wonderful addition to
our community. We are so impressed by their incredible impact and growth
and are honored to make them a part of our organization.”
“This is a very exciting venture for the Film Festival to be working with
such an incredible, longstanding arts organization like the Center for the
Arts,” says Jennifer Brody, Co-Director of the Crested Butte Film Festival.
Brody goes on to say, “By working together we believe we can strengthen the
artistic and cultural opportunities for everyone in the Gunnison Valley.”
Monthly film series presented at the Center
In June the two organizations collaborated to present high-quality films on a monthly basis to the Center, resulting in
the Crested Butte Film Series. The Film Series has experienced outstanding attendance and response from the community
from the onset.
The partnership also instigated the installation of new state of the art technical equipment, raising the bar for film
presentation at the Center. According to Festival Co-Director Michael Brody, “Through high-definition filmmaking, the art
of film has grown substantially, and now we have equipment that can match the technical innovations of our
filmmakers.”
The Center For the Arts will also be home to, and one of the primary venues of, the Crested Butte Film Festival, an
annual four-day festival of international film that takes place the last weekend of September. More information can be
found at www.cbfilmfest.org or www.crestedbuttearts.org.

memorable experiences I’ve had in a long
time, thank you!” IZZAC NIXON

CRESTED BUTTE ACCEPTED INTO
STATE OF COLORADO CREATIVE
DISTRICT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
IN JUNE, COLORADO CREATIVE INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCED THE
acceptance of seven Candidate Districts into the Colorado Creative
Districts Program, including Crested Butte. “These 2014 candidate
creative districts are great examples of how the arts create exciting
places for people to visit and live,” said Governor John Hickenlooper.
“These districts not only increase quality of life, they also help with
economic vitality of the area and attract people from all over Colorado
and the country.”
“The goal of this program is to help Colorado Creative Districts
achieve the administrative structure, funding streams, community
engagement process, strategic plan and staff structure that provide both
opportunities to grow the creative economy,” said Margaret Hunt,
director of Colorado Creative Industries.
Creative districts accepted into the program as “candidates” work
toward certification for two years. This incubator-style program offers
Candidate Creative Districts benefits in the form of direct funding,
professional assistance, training and networking with peers. Candidate
districts are eligible to apply for certification at the end of two years.
The proposed district includes 16 artist-owned studios and galleries,
three co-op galleries, ten Art Walk events year-round and ten
performance venues including independent restaurants, bars and coffee
shops hosting exhibitions of local art. The artistic talent is extremely
diverse and ranges from metal work and photography, to hand blown
glass and wood, and everything in between. Many renowned individual
artists call Crested Butte home including award-winning filmmakers,
Emmy award-winning television producers, architects, designers,
published writers, actors, dancers, musicians, painters, photographers
and chefs.
A creative corridor
Hell’s Belles,
Summer Season 2013
In the summer months, there are literally hundreds of arts and culture
events and classes throughout the summer on virtually every day of the
week in the Creative District. This creative corridor is continuously
buzzing with amazing energy for opportunities for everyone — full time
residents, tourists and second home owners.
The Crested Butte Mountain Theatre is at the end of the proposed
Creative District on Second Street and has been offering community
theater productions for the past 40 years. Other annual festivals of note
include the Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival, showcasing local and
regional vintner craft and culinary arts; and the Crested Butte Plein Air
Invitational, ranking among the finest pure landscape painting exhibits
in the United States. Weekly Farmers Markets happen every Sunday in the
district and feature the work of local artists though AWE Fest, a unique
production of the Artists of the West Elks.
“Creative District certification feels like the next logical step for the
Crested Butte community,” states Jenny Birnie, Executive Director of
the Center for the Arts, “Over the past ten years, we have experienced
unprecedented growth in our programs, festivals and collaborations
and we believe this is a perfect time to take a detailed look at
ourselves, develop functional collaborations and stronger
communication channels.
