The drupa cube is the conference programme at drupa 2016, with the theme
Touch the Future. Featuring leaders from the worlds of innovation, design, creativity
and technology, the cube offers attendees a glimpse into the future of print.
Inspirational, future-facing presentations from
visionaries, each with a worldwide reputation
in their field. Presenters will share their insights
on the future of print, innovation and the
customer in this ‘new age’ of communications.
These sessions are free of charge.
Invitation-only, strategic discussions aimed at board
level attendees. These sessions will help business leaders
as they navigate their organisations through times of
change and market consolidation.
These sessions are invite only.
These sessions will look at innovation trends and best
practice in the global print marketplace across a wide
range of areas. They will appeal to anyone tasked with
leading a team to deliver improved performance and
higher levels of service and address the concerns and
‘care abouts’ of management attendees.
These sessions are free of charge.
Led by The Medici Group, drupa Innovation Partner 2016:
Where does innovation sit in your organisation?
These sessions will put innovation in the hands of the
audience — demonstrating that innovation is the concern
of every individual, regardless of role, function, and
expertise. It is by tearing down preconceived notions
and barriers between diverse fields, cultures, concepts
and disciplines that we have the best chance of finding
breakthrough innovation. This idea is central to Medici’s
Intersectional Thinking approach. Attendees will
participate in an interactive experience that puts the
powerW&V
of Intersectional
Thinking
to work.

Trendlab
These are the times to re-imagine how we do things by
using new approaches, applying new tools and creating new
opportunities. Not only do we identify trends, we test them
and apply them in real world scenarios. By exploring trends,
applying them...and sometimes creating them, we help invent
the future by helping you and your business.
The FXP Trend Lab is a place designed to address these
challenges and more. We have created an innovation incubator
that examines trends, creates ideas and contributes to a better
tomorrow. However, it all begins with today.
Utilizing the right trends can further drive brand affinity,
loyalty and advocacy, whilst playing a critical role in influencing
overall marketing campaigns. It is our identification,
understanding and application of trends which helps us raise
the bar on brand experiences. We help invent the future by
helping you generate tomorrow’s headlines.
The purpose of this workshop is to take a break from the
narrow focus of the tactical day to day and employ a wider lens
to imagine and ultimately design the future trajectory of brand
experience. The FXP Trend Lab will initiate the journey and
unlock new possibilities.

How can you rapidly reorient your organization for
innovative growth? The era of 2-3 year timelines in creating
incremental change has gone forever. We are now in a

this innovative heartbeat into your organization? How do you
avoid the seduction of using ROI in making every innovative

Choose Sustainability –
While You Still Can
Changes in environmental legislation are coming –
will your business be ahead of the game?
Speaker: Steve Wicks,
Greenprint Consultancy
The U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015
reached a new binding agreement, hailed by Francois Hollande
as “a revolution for climate change”. But it will be businesses
which will carry much of the responsibility and the cost for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions as governments look to
industry to fulfil their obligations under the new agreement.
Instead of seeing sustainability as a cost, progressive
businesses can choose to be ahead of the game, building a
strong ethical platform to enhance customer perception and
loyalty and driving out cost by reducing waste and increasing
efficiency. This discussion will cover the pros and cons of
adopting sustainable business practices.
Steve has a wealth of experience in the printing
industry, having worked at board level in commercial
and production roles encompassing contract,
commercial, packaging and security printing. After
setting up print management company Leanprint
in 2004, he changed the focus of the business to
offer environmentally responsible print production
and re-branded as Greenprint Consultancy in 2007,
gaining ISO14001 environmental certification. Steve was freelance project manager for the highly
successful PrintIT! schools engagement programme

Digital vs. Flexo
in Packaging and Point Of Sale
Flexo dominates packaging but has been usurped in display
and POS where inkjet has grabbed value and opened new
opportunities. Will the same happen in packaging, or does
analogue offer insurmountable advantages of cost and quality?
Speaker: Sean Smyth, Marketing Analyst,
Smithers Pira
Sean Smyth is Print Consultant at Smithers Pira,
the worldwide authority on the packaging, paper
and print industry supply chains.
There are many reasons to maintain the status quo. Spot
colours and print quality are important, there are ink
migration/food safety concerns and in flexible multi-layer
constructions and coatings must be compatible with the toner
or inks in digital. But digital offers new opportunities – cost
effective short runs, versioning and personalisation that can
be tailored to locations or events, increasing the consumer
engagement. drupa will see new digital packaging production
systems, along with the latest analogue offerings – be open
and make your mind up which provides the best future
business opportunities.
Sean has spent over 30 years in the industry in senior
technology positions for a variety of print businesses
across the supply chain, in hands on and consultancy
roles. After completing his PhD in Chemistry he joined
the industry as an ink chemist in 1980, formulating
UV inks and coatings and trying to support them in

The Economics of Using Inkjet
Technology for Digital Production
Inkjet technology adoption is driven by economics and print
quality. Unless we achieve both, the adoption process stalls. In
many industries we have passed the tipping point and inkjet
now dominates. Inkjet is used outside the graphics market for
the production of ceramic tiles, textiles, laminate flooring and
many other items. Quality requirements and economics vary
by industry, however a driving factor in cost calculations is the
business upheaval that potentially changes print runs from tens
or hundreds of thousands to one. For some, changes in skill
sets required to run and manage digital print, the introduction
of digital print in businesses that are new to print or pre-press
have created a steep learning curve.
To find true economic advantage we must move away from
traditional business models focussed on ROI and ink prices and
consider re-engineering the business to exploit a new era of
manufacturing and print.

The Vision Of Inline
Digital Print For Labels
This presentation will give FMCG brand owners and printers
an insight into the digitisation of the customer experience and
the changing shape of the print and labelling sectors now and in
the future.
The need for late stage customisation and personalisation of
products and packaging is increasing in the highly competitive
and complex fast moving consumer goods industries. Digital
technologies are not only changing the way that brands
communicate with consumers, they are changing the future of
the print and labelling industry.
DataLase inline digital technology enables graphics and
labelling to be integrated into pack designs at the point packing
and filling to create greater consumer engagement. The inline
digital technology enables greater labelling and graphics
placement flexibility than ever before.
In the future, labels will need to provide even more
information than they do now, but striking the need for more
product information with attractive pack appearance is a
delicate balance.

Innovation - Can It Be
For Everybody?
The word “ Innovation” evokes either excitement or anxiety in
many business leaders. It can describe a new discovery that
in an instant changes the destiny of a company, or it may be a
‘necessary evil’, endured in the search for new revenue streams
to bolster a declining traditional business. Or it can represent
the true DNA of a new generation of corporations that today
seem to rule the world, like Google or Apple.
Speaker: Enrico Deluchi,

Services Diversification –
How to Cash In On New Services
It’s an undeniable fact that margins and prices are being eroded
year on year and print companies need to diversify and add
new services in order to survive. A host of new print and cross
media applications offer the opportunity for more profitable
growth but the majority of print companies are stubbornly
sticking to what they know.
In our experience businesses don’t fail because they are too
early, they fail because they are too late! So how
can the average commercial print company wake up to
the opportunities and cash in before it’s too late?
The formula for success includes, automation efficiency,
integrated multichannel production and new customer
focused business models.

Inkjet vs. Toner Technologies
For 25 years digital printing has been synonymous with toner
technologies. This seems to be a mature, stable technology,
that has found its place in the industry. Now it faces a direct
challenge from inkjet printing. Inkjet promises better quality,
a greater choice of substrates and faster throughput. Can toner
based digital printing respond? The answer seems to be yes.
There are demonstrations of new toner technologies at drupa
which mean that printers must reconsider their preconceptions
about what toner printing can achieve. Is this too late, or is
the dominance of inkjet printing now inevitable, pushing toner
printing back to niche positions only? The debate will help
printers decide where they should make their next investment.
