as “Neighborhoods”. We will sit at tables together
and get to know one another, sometimes for the
first time. You’ll meet other members in or near
your own neighborhoods, people you never even
knew you had this connection with.
Temple members will be invited to attend a dinner in or as close as possible to their neighborhood.

Anti Child-Trafficking
I N I T IAT I V E
The Temple’s social justice efforts to combat human trafficking have been moving ahead full-force, connecting Temple
members with a variety of resources to directly engage with in
regards to this issue. On February 7, Temple members participated in Lobby Day at the Georgia State House, gaining support from their representatives for four anti-trafficking bills:
• HB 141, which will require certain businesses and establishments (including adult entertainment venues) to
post the National Human Trafficking Hotline number
(888.373.7888)
• HB 219, which includes the sealing of records for juveniles charged with prostitution
• HB 156, which clarifies certain acts amounting to unlawfully seducing, soliciting, luring, or enticing a child
through the use of a computer online service, Internet
service, or similar service
• HB 242, a juvenile code re-write and to contain a provision (CHINS - CHildren In Need of Services) to protect
child victims of commercial sexual exploitation.
UPDATE: HB 242 and HB 219 have all since passed out of
committee with a “do pass” recommendation and HB 141
has just passed the State House and is headed to the State
Senate. Rabbi Bregman was also asked to lead the closing
prayer at the day’s event, in front of a crowd of more than
700 citizen participants.
The Temple and Open Jewish Project were asked to join in
a table discussion on February 9 with the Community Leadership Institute at Morehouse University. All parties present
agreed that the most successful way to advocate around the
issue of child trafficking is to not waste time ‘fighting against’,
but to dedicate yourself to ‘fight for’ a decrease in demand.
We all can come together around this clearly articulated and
tangible goal of decreasing demand by working together in
groups, to further amplify each individual voice and by contextualizing this issue as an adult problem: Though children
are the victims of this form of trafficking, they are not the
perpetrators-- it is the adults we must hold accountable and
seek to influence and educate.
On February 10, the non-profit organization StreetGrace
held an awareness training session at The Temple, which was
attended by 49 people, 14 of which were Temple members.
The presentation is the first of three modules and is intended
to give the attendees enough information to be able to talk
with others about the subject. For those who wish to join the
Street Grace speakers group, there are two additional training
modules conducted at another time and location. One of the
main points communicated in the training was that child trafficking is an issue hidden in plain sight and it is our responsibility to be aware of the signs and report anything suspicious.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR
AS YOURSELF – BUT NOT MINE!
R
ecently in a Friday night sermon, I used
the injunction “Love Your Neighbor As
Yourself” as an example of an oft quoted mitzvah. After the service, a woman came running
over to me and said emphatically, “Rabbi, I’d
like to see you love my neighbors!”
A point well taken. We quote the verse “Love
Your Neighbor” from Leviticus 19, nodding
our heads unshaken, whenever we see it or
whenever we read it on the wall in our chapel.
There are even those who profess no religion
whatsoever, except for the biblical command to
love our neighbors.
Of course, we know that it is not as easy to
observe the command as it is to quote it. It is
not easy to relate “in love” to plenty of people
in this world. Many have enough trouble
relating in a loving manner to their
own family! A better question – a more
meaningful question - might be: How
much do we really love ourselves?
Are we loveable people? Do all
who know us actually love us?
When we stop to reflect on
this well-known Jewish teaching,
we realize that it is far more easily professed than it is practiced.
It is certainly a lofty ideal that we
should try hard to attain, but as a
guide for daily living it is not particularly practical.
Part of what makes this verse so
challenging is that love is an emotion;
even when we have the best of intentions, we can’t always control our
emotions. So, what do we do when
we feel absolutely no love for a neighbor or a
friend or a colleague? The answer, I believe,
is provided by another majestic phrase in the
Torah, this time from Deuteronomy: “Justice,
Justice shall you pursue.”
True, we may not be able to control all of
our feelings, but regarding our actions, there
is no question – we must be in total control.
We may have a neighbor to whom we just are
not capable of giving love, but we are never
permitted from withholding justice from that
person. No matter how we feel towards him
or her, we owe every human being our justice.
This is at the core of our steadfast commitment as a congregation to social justice. And
it is at the heart of our three major justice initiatives: The Zaban Couples Center, Toomer
Elementary School, and our Anti-human
trafficking initiatives. And who knows? If
we avoid harming a person, maybe
the feeling of love will come to us
at a later time.
John Ruskin, the nineteenth century essayist, seemed to be addressing himself to this very theme
when he wrote: “If we do justice to
our brother even though we may
not like him, we will come to love
him; but, if we do injustice to him
because we do not love him, we will
come to hate him.”
If we take seriously the biblical
injunction “Justice, Justice, shall you
pursue,” we may in fact come to love
our neighbor. And, if we do not,
then let love wait. Justice cannot. <

Abe Foxman is the national director of the ADL & has written this
book with a forward by Paul Volcker.
Of course it’s about prejudice: as he says in the book, Bernie Madoff’s religion was mentioned at least three times in a piece about him in the New York Times whereas Allen Stanford who was accused of a similar crime shortly afterwards, was not defined in any way by
religion (as it turns out, he is a Southern Baptist).
Our discussion will be led by Hollande Levinson who is the Educational Director of the
ADL, SE Region.
It will be as usual on the second Tuesday of the month, April 9 at 7:30 PM and in the Halpern Conference Room since Holli wants to show a short power point or video. Do come,
even if you haven’t read the book as it should be a stimulating discussion.

Avivah Zornberg
to Speak at The Temple

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta
in partnership with The Temple presents Avivah
Zornberg, who will speak at The Temple on Monday evening, April 29, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Zornberg
is a scholar, author and a preeminent interpreter of
the Bible. She is that rare teacher who makes learning come alive, integrating Jewish texts with literature, psychology and contemporary culture. This
program is offered to the community free of charge.
Topic of the evening is, ‘And I am a Stranger:
Becoming Ruth’. Ruth is considered the ancestor
of King David, but she is a stranger from Moab.
Who is this unknown woman and how does she
find her way into Judaism? Might we learn from
her to find our own way?
Dr. Zornberg was born in London and grew
up in Glasgow, Scotland, where her father was a
Rabbi and the head of the Rabbinical Court. She
studied with him from childhood; he was her
most important teacher of Torah. She holds a BA
and PhD in English Literature from Cambridge
University. After teaching English literature at
the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, she turned
to teaching Torah. For the past twenty-five years,
she has taught Torah in Jerusalem at Matan,
Yakar, Pardes and the Jerusalem College for
Adults. Dr. Zornberg also holds a Visiting Lectureship at the London School of Jewish Studies.
She travels widely, lecturing in Jewish, academic
and psychoanalytic settings.

How My Grandmother’s
Teapot Became Our
Tzdakah Box

y grandparents raised their family during the depression. My grandfather was fortunate to
have work as a policeman. When he brought home his pay, my grandmother used several
teapots to hold the money. Each teapot had a job holding a specific household expense.
Sometimes my grandmother would have to “borrow” money from a teapot to help cover an unexpected expense. She always left a note in the “lending” teapot from the “borrowing” teapot and the
“borrowing” teapot always paid its debt.
When I was young my grandmother still employed the teapot system to manage “mad” money and
would sometimes use it to treat us to movies. I loved those teapots. When my grandmother passed
Mom gave me one of the special teapots. Part of being Jewish is to honor family memories and traditions and to keep the mitzvah of tzedakah. Don and I honored my grandmother’s wonderful tradition
of teapot money management by devoting our inherited teapot to the task of becoming our tzedakah
box. We figured it already was skilled at keeping good track of change and are certain my grandmother
would approve.

Show Solidarity with
WOMEN OF THE WALL
Month after month, the Women of the Wall gather at the Kotel (Western Wall) in
Jerusalem for a Rosh Chodesh minyan in which they pray, wear tallitot, and then read
Torah. They are standing up for their right as liberal Jewish women to pray authentically
at the Kotel. In recent months, women are being prevented from even bringing tallitot
into the kotel plaza and some are being detained or arrested for wearing them.
We have started a Rosh Chodesh minyan in solidarity with Women of the Wall and
the pursuit of religious pluralism in Israel. It is open to women and men and is a
shacharit service and Torah reading, liturgically similar to what is said by the Women
of the Wall as they gather. Please join us on April 10 from 8:00-8:45 AM for this minyan,
