New Behaviour Code We are launching a new whole school behaviour code for September, to fit in with our new vertical tutoring House system. The Implementation Plan for this is outlined below. We are trying to involve parents as much as possible, as it will be vital that parents support us on this. More details will follow in our first Newsletter of next term. This is in response to one of our recent Ofsted inspection targets. Date Monday 19th July 2010 Action Mini launch to staff in Lecture Theatre by Headteacher for 20 minutes; followed up by HoH meeting for 40 minutes Tuesday 20th July 2010 Assembly to Years 7-10 by Dr Jones and Mr Handyside to launch; followed up by HoH/AHoH assembly, 3pm same day, to years 7-9 to reinforce Wednesday and Thursday, 21st and 22nd July 2010 Mr Handyside to see small groups of students to reinforce message Friday 23rd July 2010 Initial information to go out to parents in Newsletter, about our new whole school Behaviour Code Summer holidays All paperwork for new system finalised and photocopied; posters for all classrooms produced and laminated; target cards and remove slips produced; rewards stamps ordered Summer holidays New larger Isolated Learning Room created to support system Thursday September 2nd 2010 Major launch to staff by Mr Handyside on Inset Day Monday 6th September 2010 Heads of House assemblies to all new Houses – message reinforced Weeks Beginning 6th, 13th and 20th September 2010 Academic Tutorials with parents of Years 7 and 11 (500 sets of parents) for message to be passed on/ reinforced Week beginning 6th September Individual teachers negotiate classroom rules for C1 and C2 with their classes Thursday September 9th 2010 Email alert to parents and letter home inviting them to major launch for parents – Parents’ Forum – 6pm in Hall; Dr Jones and Mr Handyside to go through new code and reasons for it, to parents W/B 6th September 2010 Details of new code in Home School Agreement; Newsletter and on Parent Portal: Insight and on Website W/B 11th October 2010 Student Council review new system and give feedback W/B 18th October 2010 Second Parents’ Forum meeting, with Dr Jones and Mr Handyside to do a follow up on parents’ impressions of new system and how it is going New Behaviour Code NOTE TO PARENTS These slides are an overview of the launch of the new whole school Behaviour Code that I recently went through with staff. I have copied them here for parents so you can see the focus of our ethos - but please bear in mind that the ‘target audience’ is the staff of LGS, so it might read as a bit jargon ridden. However, I think that this will give parents a flavour of just how important this change is going to be for the school. More information in ‘parent speak’ will follow in the next newsletter. WHY NOW? TRYING TO LISTEN TO STAFF AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS Dr Jones. Headteacher. Fits in with move to vertical House system Key target from Ofsted, under Notice to Improve, to sort out low level disruption Parents’ questionnaires to Ofsted suggest they see this as a priority About 50% of students, in response to Ofsted questionnaire, suggested they wanted an improvement – peer response Staff in ‘open forum’ with Headteacher, feel behaviour is an area of concern and this also came through staff responses to Ofsted questionnaire 2 1 CURRENT SYSTEM SO CHANGE REQUIRED Does work if staff consistently and assiduously follow it through, but problems with communication Not always followed consistently by staff HOYs end up doing a lot of fire-fighting Bottle neck in current system as some teacher by-pass both the HoF and the Form Tutor and go straight to HoYs Retain some elements of current system We hope we have created a pastoral structure that listens – we believe we have in new House system and Vertical Tutoring Staff and students are encouraged to think positively We want lots of celebration of student success We know it is a lot of change all at once, but hopefully it all dovetails together 4 3 WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE Brings teachers on board and releases goodwill and energy. Creates a whole school team feeling and a ‘we can do this’ attitude. Provides clear and direct evidence to students and parents that the school is improving. Has a positive effect on recruitment and retention. Provides immediate support to NQTs and new staff. Provides the platform for improving teaching and learning. Is the basis for evolving into a learning community. 5 THE FUTURE Have made some progress with ethos this year but there is still too much time spent off task by students – too much time arguing over behaviour problems A behaviour system to answer these needs is required, that is simple and easy to understand This new system is that – based on three core principles and five ‘Consequences/C’ steps 6 New Behaviour Code A WHOLE SCHOOL BEHAVIOUR SYSTEM TO SUPPORT BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING From ‘Assertive Discipline’ roots. Discussed with HOHs and been out to HOFs for response. Provides a whole school supportive and consistent disciplinary framework that we hope teachers, students and parents will appreciate. Supported by IT to facilitate monitoring, analysis and response to individual, group or whole school behaviour. Mirrored with a rewards/praise system. 3 PRINCIPLES Based on three principles: Do as you are asked on the first asking Do the appropriate amount of work in the lesson Have the right equipment for learning 7 8 BFL IN THE CLASSROOM – ‘C’ BECOMES COMMON PARLANCE COMMUNICATION For low level disruption: First misbehaviour……..Verbal warning (C1) Second misbehaviour…….Verbal warning (C2) Third misbehaviour……..Detention and/or Removal in Faculty (C3) Fourth misbehaviour…….Removal/isolation in ILR (C4) Fifth misbehaviour …… Fixed Term Exclusion (C5) Gatekeeper role created, to keep flow of information going both ways. Gatekeeper keeps Form Tutor, AHOH, HOH, HOD, HOF - informed at appropriate level Gatekeeper informs teacher who made the referral of follow up action However, still professional onus on staff to write up incidents properly for SIMS 9 10 PARENTS INVOLVED PAPER WORK! New system based on parents being involved more often through frequent Academic Tutorials and from Form Tutor contacting if there is bad behaviour (C1/C2 etc). Students do not come out of ILR until parents have been in and a contract has been signed. 11 New ‘on report’ card designed –including attendance and punctuality focus New ‘C3’ removal slip designed Detentions spreadsheet designed that students cannot ‘slip through the net’ from! Whiteboards in classrooms for C1/C2 names Gatekeeper logging all incidents However, teachers still need to be professional and ensure that they follow up themselves by logging incidents properly 12 New Behaviour Code CONSISTENCY IS KEY Flow charts – look complicated but actually show the route to take. This is to ensure consistency. In fact the system is simple. All staff must use the new system. Consistency to support more junior colleagues. No system is perfect but human error sometimes lets us down. 13 SEAL AND DE-ESCALATION However, staff are still expected to de-escalate situations (keep left) Staff must use SEAL techniques Toolkit being issued to help staff to deflect Always use positive, calm and respectful language to students Calm but firm; avoid negative body language; firm and consistent in application of sanctions 10 bits of praise for one bit of punishment! 14 LAUNCHING THIS WHOLE SCHOOL INITIATIVE Time line given out Important to ‘launch’ to staff, students and parents Fits in with new House and Vertical Tutoring ethos Lots of change for next year, but hopefully change for the better. 15 I am delighted that nine of our students in Year 7 have achieved 100% attendance this academic year. A fantastic achievement! Well done to: Rafik Asryan – 7AMO Hannah Beazley-Long – 7AMO Hannah Cerrone – 7AMO AJ Mistry – 7RXH Tamara Muyobo – 7JMI Euan Newbury – 7JGR Megan Owens – 7LSO Adam Ruse – 7JMI Chloe Briggenshaw – 7JMI Mr Lorne Murray, Head of Year 7 Chemistry at Work On Monday 14th June, a group of Year 8 students left Lord Grey School in the minibus to attend a ‘Chemistry at Work’ event. This is held each year, sponsored by the Royal Society for Chemistry and is designed to show young people how various aspects of Chemistry are applied in a variety of working environments. There was a variety of talks, some of which enabled the students to take part in ‘hands-on’ activities. These included working in the Pathology Department of Milton Keynes Hospital and the various routes which can be taken to obtain a job there; paramagnetism; the oil industry; a talk on poisons; hydrogen as a fuel; dentistry and applying designs to all sorts of materials, including fridge magnets. Two of our students, Callum McCarthy and Georgina Bright, were among the twenty or so winners whose designs were chosen to be made into fridge magnets. One student assessed the day as follows: “We all enjoyed the Year 8 Chemistry at Work trip. There were many things to do and see, so our day was jam packed full of activities. The activities showed us how chemistry was used in every day life and jobs revolving around chemistry. The activities consisted of anything between a visit from MK Hospital to a woman who makes printed magnets and t-shirts. There were also talks and experiments about magnets, water and poisons. We all had a really good day!” The students were all well behaved, asked and answered a lot of questions, and were specifically commended for their attention and interest in their final session of the day – which was the session on poisons. It was a pleasure to take the group to this event. Do some reading; join the Public Libraries - even on holiday; do the Summer Reading Challenge and earn stickers for next year; and come back in September and tell me about all the great books you’ve read! On Thursday 15th July students plus their parents, staff and Governors gathered in the main hall for a very enjoyable afternoon to celebrate the achievement of Lord Grey students in the past year. After a welcome from David Smith, Form Prizes and Subject Prizes were awarded to students in each form: Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The students who had been nominated as the winners of the Subject Prizes then received their magnificent books which have a commemorative inscription, as well as a certificate. The books were chosen by Mrs Coles to be relevant to the subject area in which the prize was won or to the known interests of the recipient. There were Year Prizes for students who have made a huge contribution to the school community and MySticker prizes. We hope this day will remind them of their great achievement. The musical performances were excellently performed by: Jamie Hyde - Year 8, Jordan Noel - Year 9, Billy Hammond - Year 10 and Deborah Winter - Year 7. Dr Tracey Jones congratulated the students and their parents and invited all the guests to move to the Dining Room to enjoy some wonderful cakes and tea. Congratulations to you if you received an award and thank you to all the staff and students who helped in the organisation of the event. Sports Day was certainly set to be a scorcher and one of the highlights of the school calendar. Friday came and the weather did not disappoint with the temperature creeping up towards 30 degrees Celsius! The timetable for the day: The elite athletes battled it out in the running events around the track in the morning; competing in the 100m, 800m, 1500m and 4 x 100m relay races trying to collect as many points as possible for their House. We saw some outstanding performances along the way from James Wilson in the 1500m and Sam Howkins in the 800m. The points were collected and Madrid took an early lead, but only 80 points separated the first and last House and there was all to play for in the afternoon. The emphasis for the afternoon was not on individual performances but on the cohesion and team work and again acquiring as many points as possible for their respective houses. At 1:20pm the activities got underway, the field and astro turf area were a sea of the colours as all the competitors were sporting their house colours. The activities ranged from shooting at a target goal, whole class Up ‘n’ Under to Discus and Three Legged races. The students performed in high spirits, urged on by their Form Tutors, class and team mates. Eighty minutes of activities later and all the results were in and being counted. Whilst this was going on there was time for one last event… the 6 th Former 100m race with two competitors taking part for each house. The gun went and Nathan Kabeya took the lead in a very close race but managed to hold his lead until over the finish line. With the last race run and the results added up, it was time for the announcement of the overall results: Year 7 – Paris, Year 8 – Rome, Year 9 – Madrid, Year 10 – Madrid Overall winners were calculated from the whole days results giving us the overall winners – Rome! Congratulations. Some of the days events! This academic year has been an outstanding one for some of our Year 10 students. In particular the girls have won every sports tournament they entered and were runners up in a netball league. The boys are County and Milton Keynes Basketball Champions. All students are very dedicated to their sports with many girls involved with the MK Dons Academy. They are also potentially involved with an exciting challenge at the Leon Football Academy where they will meet top opposition throughout Year 11. Some of the girls are playing top netball with MK Netters and they have been recognised in higher netball circles too. The boys are well linked to the MK Lions. Overall the success was as follows: Girls: Year 10 Milton Keynes Netball Tournament Winners U16 Milton Keynes Netball League Runners Up U16 Basketball Milton Keynes Winners Year 10 Football Milton Keynes Winners U16 Football County Cup Winners U16 Football National Cup Quarter Finalists Boys: Year 10 Basketball Milton Keynes Winners Year 10 Basketball County Winners Year 10 Rounders Milton Keynes Tournament winners On the academic front, twenty Year 10 students have completed the BTEC Sports Diploma a year early. These students have gained the equivalent of 4 GCSE grades and should be very proud of their achievements. The students are: Distinction*: Callum Farmborough Jason Richards Rochelle Winkworth Merit: Naveed Ahmed Fraser Mackay Khalisur Rahman Harley Shaw Lucy Kaye Danni Shaw Desrell Cole John Hunter Mason Murray Conor Reilly Toby Roberts Lauren Ringer Pass: Humaira Adil Hope Coles Samantha Kennedy Joel Seidu Bryony Coles The students who have received a Distinction* will receive the equivalent of 4 A* grades. Merits are worth 4 B grades and Passes are worth 4 C grades at GCSE. The students will now spend Year 11 studying BTEC Health and Social Care Level 2 and will hopefully gain a Certificate (2 GCSEs) or even the Diploma (4 GCSEs) depending on time. Congratulations must go to Miss Sue Jones for all her hard work in getting this group through and supporting them in this fabulous achievement. Faye Causer, Head of Sport and Healthy Living The AS Level PE Group for next year took part in the Young Leaders Camp held at Leon School between Wednesday 7 th July and Friday 9th July. During the three days they gained qualifications in Football, Tennis and Rugby and were trained in delivering multi-skills festivals. On Friday the Young Leaders took on the role of coaches, assisting SSCO’s at the Partnership Games for Year 6 students from around Milton Keynes. Activities delivered included: rounders, football, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, athletics, basketball and martial arts. The students involved will now be assisting with school clubs and primary school festivals and using their qualifications towards their AS PE coursework next year. Beth Brent-Williams, Georgia Breuilly, Brett Arthurs, Curtis Cokayne, George Reed, Kieran Bolton, Joe McCartney, Ross Acland, Jack Gregory. Well done to all of you! Jo May, School Sports Co-ordinator Milton Keynes School Sports Partnership Awards Ceremony at Stantonbury Campus On Thursday 15th July, the Milton Keynes School Sports Partnership Awards Ceremony took place at Stantonbury Campus, where Christina Cararra and Georgia Breuilly received an award for Lord Grey Sporting Ambassadors 2009/2010. The event was a fun packed evening with a special guest appearance from Dan Magners, World Keepy Uppy Champion, who showed off his skills that he recently demonstrated during his epic 26 hours world record breaking success. Another special guest for the evening was a former British Snowboarder Anna Turney who broke her back during a pre Olympic snowboarding event in 2006. She told the audience her inspirational story, of how she thought her sporting life was over until she heard about monoskiing. She came back four years later at the Winter Paralympics held in Vancouver this year and came a respectable 6th in her event A special mention must go to Toni Wright who was asked to make a speech about her role as Sporting Ambassador for Milton Keynes 2008/2009 and has been given the prestigious title of Platinum Young Sporting Ambassador for Milton Keynes next year. Jo May, School Sports Co-ordinator NATIONAL SCHOOL SPORTS WEEK (UPDATE) The National School Sports Week took place between Monday 28th June – 2nd July 2010, with various activities, from Athletics to Ultimate Frisbee and Extreme Golf to Wii Sports. Jo May, School Sports Coordinator On Wednesday evening, 30th June the Year 11 Prom took place at Wilton Hall. It was a rather spectacular evening with everyone arriving in various types of limousines! All were dressed up in some beautiful dresses and suits for this special night and a photographer was there to capture the memories. Congratulations go to Jake Hobbs and Jasmine Hayes who were crowned Prom King and Prom Queen. Another special thank you must go to Mrs Jayne Dunn, Assistant Head of Year, for all the organisation of this fantastic event for making it such a special evening for the students, which I am sure they will remember for many years! Richard Henry, Head of Year A selection of photographs showing off some fantastic dresses and suits! On the warm evening of July 14th, the hall was full of proud parents and other family members to watch and listen to Lord Grey music students in their annual Summer Concert. A wide programme of music was performed, ranging from soloists, duos, bands, chamber ensembles, jazz groups, singers, choirs and of course the magnificent full orchestra, playing selections from the upcoming tour to Austria. Too many brilliant performances to pick out individuals, the standard was universally excellent. The highs of the evening were sadly counterpointed at the end by the fact Miss Webb and Mrs McKinnell are leaving Lord Grey to teach elsewhere. They were both presented with gifts to show the affection in which they are held. They will be hugely and fondly missed by students and colleagues alike, and our best wishes go with them. Bob Buckby, Performing Arts An evening to remember! The Masked Ball held at the Hilton Hotel on Friday 2nd July was an amazing event with everyone wearing an array of extravagant masks! Everyone had a great time dancing and socialising with the parting Year 13s signing each others’ books and watching the jester do his tricks. Kelvin Pearson had a great night as it was this 18th birthday too! There was lovely speeches towards the end of the evening for Dr Trevenna, Mrs Mohan and Mr Hoggard, who had helped many students throughout their Sixth Form careers. Also a special thank you to Laurie Severn who put a lot of time and effort into making the prom an amazing event. Plans for the prom next year are already on the go, so next year will be equally as good! Hannah-Mae Brett, Head Girl Arts Business Challenge On Tuesday 29th June, 2 teams of Year 12 students went to the Cranfield School of Management to compete in the Arts Business Challenge. The challenge revolved around an internet based business simulation in which each team needed to work together with their mentors Dan and Patricia from the Centre:MK to make business decisions over the course of a week. In addition, each team had to design and submit a logo design for their company. One of our two teams, ‘Elite’ got through to the Grand Final on Tuesday 13 th July and competed against three schools from across Milton Keynes. Elite won first prize for their logo design as the judges said that it didn’t loose impact in black and white or when scaled down and that it had longevity. Well done to Elite who are: Ashaye Edgehill, Lewis Kaye, Dean Phillips, Jess Rocton, Warun Thaper and Adam Warwick. A big thank you also goes to the two team mentors, who gave up their time and expertise out of goodwill. Jennifer Graham, Teacher of Business LORD GREY BUSINESS LINK WITH VW AUDI A couple of weeks ago Joe Wilkinson, sales manager at VW Audi in Blakelands, visited three Year 8 German classes. Joe talked about how his language learning had enabled him to follow his career at VW and how he uses German in his job. In a simulated phone call with the German VW plant in Wolfsburg the students learnt how to report sales figures for Polo, Scirocco, Golf and Passat for the month of June. Then Joe answered questions about the importance of foreign language learning. I’d like to thank VW and Joe Wilkinson for a very interesting afternoon. Altogether we raised £26.75. All this money will be going to Willen Hospice. We all had a good time and I hope we can do it again. Kaitlin Doig, 8LBE Our class invited the other Humanities Extra classes to come along to support this charity.
