For the first time in our history, we exceeded 1000 members and we also made excellent progress in building the foundation to transition to a staffed organization, building our equity reserve to over $100,000. While we continued to work on building our infrastructure, our greater focus was the continued pursuit of the furtherance of our mission. Several events and programs set new participation records in 2012: The Kal-Haven Trail Run, the Fast Track 5k Training Program, the Safari Marathon Training Program, the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Time Prediction 5k Run and the Run Through the Lights all shattered prior participation records. One of the highlights of the year, we entered into a partnership with our first municipality, the City of Portage, to host the 2013 Winter Blast Half Marathon and 5k. While the inaugural event was scheduled for 2013 in celebration of the City of Portage 50 th Anniversary, most of the negotiations and planning occurred in 2012. In 2012 we formed the Battle Creek subcommittee to focus on reviving the running community in our Eastern most corridor. We established three weekly group runs, and are working on a Fast Track Program for Battle Creek. We also focused on growing our group runs in general, adding a Thursday night Portage YMCA Run to our already existing Wednesday runs from Borgess Health and Fitness Center, Portage YMCA, and Maple Street Magnet School. Our presence in Portage, in particular, has grown exponentially over the last year. These group runs have served to connect runners and form the fabric of our organization. Our organization’s continued growth is thanks to the combined efforts of all of our leadership team members, volunteers, community partners, sponsors, members and event and program participants. It has been an honor and privilege serving as Board President, and working with each individual and organization as we worked together to reach new levels of excellence in the greater Kalamazoo running community, now and well into the future. Sincerely, Bonnie Sexton, Board President, Kalamazoo Area Runners 1 Bonnie Sexton, Club President 2012 Board of Directors Bonnie Sexton President Jane Rolfe VP Development Troy Root VP Technology Vicky Ondraka VP Special Events John Donaldson Secretary Robin Carpenter Treasurer 2012 Financial Report Revenue Membership Revenue Event Revenue Donations Sponsorships Fanwear Proceeds Interest Income Miscellaneous Total Revenue 2011 Actuals 2012 Actuals 12,093.00 34,643.46 89.63 2,465.00 204.00 333.48 810.40 50,638.97 12,650.00 67,633.21 1,600.00 12,350.00 11.75 3,737.00 97,981.96 2011 Actuals 2012 Actuals Program & Event Expenses Events Training Programs Expo/Promotional Events Annual Banquet Club Championship Series Kalamazoo Marathon Educational Clinics Social Runs Track Series T-shirts Miscellaneous Total Program & Event Expenses 9,105.70 7,009.02 465.26 941.60 572.55 377.14 640.00 808.63 454.12 20,374.02 16,946.79 2,156.64 680.46 1,517.09 968.91 822.52 166.82 503.03 423.85 348.00 165.82 24,699.93 Paid to Girls on the Run Paid to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes 6,549.94 85.00 11,491.80 490.00 2011 Actuals 2012 Actuals 552.07 453.00 3,722.20 118.39 20.00 30.00 132.00 166.14 80.00 200.00 5,473.80 127.03 1,126.67 4,280.00 38.00 45.00 117.00 261.95 200.00 6,195.65 18,156.21 55,104.58 Operating Expenses Brochure Expense Marketing Expense Insurance Expense Technology/Web Site Expense State of Michigan P.O. Club Series points are calculated by dividing the winners time in each race by the participants time, and multiplying the quotient times 100. Time points are added for each runner’s best nine races. The top 3 in each age group win awards which are presented at the Club Championship Series Celebration in the fall. Winners with the most series races, and the top open, masters and grand masters award winners received a crystal award acknowledging their achievement. Races participate in the Race Discount Program by offering a minimum $2 discount to KAR members. Thirty of the thirty-three races offered the discount. New for this year, we welcomed the Battle Creek ECO Race 4k and 8k, the Physically Strong 5k, the K5k and the Sunburst 5kto our list of participating races. These dedicated members are recognized at the conclusion of our Annual Report. For 2012, the volunteer earning the most points was Bonnie Sexton with 450 points, followed by Nikki Gates with 430 points, and then Patrick Enlow with 380 points. Gazelle Sports served as presenting sponsor of the 2012 program. Thanks to each and every one of our volunteers. Kalamazoo Area Runners would not exist without the dedicated efforts of those who make it all possible. 2012 Runner Recognition Program Each year members of the Kalamazoo Area Runners have a unique opportunity to nominate fellow club members for special awards. Once all nominations are in, the Board reviews the list of nominees and selects a winner for each category. Winners are presented with an award and receive special recognition at the Annual Banquet. Founded in 2006 by the Board President Bonnie Sexton, the Runner Recognition Program offers a venue for our members to encourage, motivate and honor one another for their running achievements. At the 2012 Annual Banquet, the 6 th year since the program’s inception, we presented awards to seventeen runners based on their accomplishments during the prior year. Congratulations to all of our 2012 Runner Recognition Program honorees.
