Method #3 Placement and Prominance http://www.bluestarmoms.org/ chapter 101, San Francisco East Bay, CA Format: Format consists of: banner with logo right nav main body has photo of group with links below photo main paragraphs describe who, how, when, news , how to help Placement: Main body The important parts of this site is about explaining the background of the organization, news and when and where to join and help Repetition: This org.s mission statement is repeated on main/ home page and mission statement tab. History was repeated on home page and about pages. Perceptions of the site: Alison: I like this site. It is clean, clear, well organized. I like the colors and how they are used on the main page. The banner is blended together well, text and background image. The small text of who they are and their parent affiliation is placed well. The left nav is prominent, stands out well because it is in larger text than the paragraph text. The sub headings are spaced well and size looks good with the paragraph text size. I like the photo on top. It gives a good idea who they are. The nav under the photo tells how and what they do. That gives clarification. The left column under the nav links is clear on how to reach them, when they have events, meetings and lastly how to donate. Maureen: The colors are good and the design is well organized. The navigation is simple and not confusing. The content area is smaller in width than more contemporary websites and the pictures of the mothers could be changed to a different subject, not the same on every page. The donate button is discreetly placed at the bottom. Method #4 Alison: Readability http://www.bluestarmoms.org/ chapter 101, San Francisco East Bay, CA The way this site is laid out lead me to think the most important elements of this site are: 1. join membership 2. keep up with legislative news about veterans 3. sending out care packages and cards of gratitude for active soldiers 4. outreach for welfare, benefits and readjustment of soldiers to civilian life. Maureen: Readability and Layout http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/content/view/1135/1151/ Wounded Warrior Project is a non-­‐profit organization that is supported by a professional staff. While they are a large organization with a wider audience, their website exemplifies a quality layout. The site engages the viewer by inviting them to click on a video or link in the copy, yet the somber tone of the colors expresses the serious subject matter. The navigation is easy to understand, and the layout is professional. The bright colors of Example 3 (Blue Star Moms) presents an upbeat, hopeful impression for the viewer but this website is a good example of a quality layout that has clarity. Scope-­‐Team 4_Visual Minds Example 1: http://www.skipcares.org/ Alison: This one needs a better color scheme, choice of text size, and imaging. The color scheme is bland. It does not use traditional patriotic colors such as red, white, blue. The banner background color is blah and does not provoke any patriotic feelings to stir the viewer to read more. The clip art of the boots gives the impression that it might have something to do with a deceased soldier. The page lacks visual stimulation because there are no photos. The text is easy to read. The navigation on top is readable, but I think it should be a little bigger. Maureen: You’re right on all points. I don’t think we should include this example in our project. Example 2: http://soldiersangels.org/ Alison: This one is a little messy. Needs tighter formatting and placement. I like the banner images, but I would have blended the two images somehow. They seem abrupt butted up to each other. The nav on top should be centered. The “donate” button should be somewhere else. The left nav text should be bigger than the text of the page. The “news” column on the left is crowed by the center column. It could be attached to a nav link for news. The icons on the bottom should be placed more prominently, such as under the banner. Maureen: Navigation is confusing and the dropdowns at left cover content. The site has an overall clean look though-­‐-­‐the background is simple and the content is readable enough. Alison is right about the donate button, it should be placed more strategically, not above the main menu.
