PROGRAM NOTES
Symphony No. 3 in D Major, D. 200
By Franz Schubert
Schubert composed his Symphony No. 3 in the early
after writing his Mass in G Major. He was in his
months he would composed a piano sonata, over 100
his second and third symphonies. The first known
was given in London on February 19, 1881.
summer of 1815, just a few months
eighteenth year, and during those
songs, four musical plays, and
performance of the third symphony
The Symphony No. 3 is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, and
trumpets, and for timpani and strings. The first movement opens with an introduction
marked adoLQ^LO ma.M£o&0. The main body of the movement, OULL&qKQ con tMAO, is a son
ata in which the first theme is divided between the clarinet and the violins. The
second theme is more tuneful by way of contrast, and is given to the oboe. A brief
development section follows in which the basses imitate the principle theme. A
transition passage returns to the first theme, again stated first by the clarinet
and then taken up by the strings.
The second movement, aJLL<LQK&t£o, is a graceful theme in ternary form. The middle
section, march-like in character, is first given to a clarinet solo and then as a
duet with the clarinet and flute.
The third movement is the traditional minuet; however, there is a long extension
in the middle part of the minuet, moving through a wide variety of keys. The trio
is given to the oboe and bassoon, and is followed by the normal return to the minuet.
The fourth movement, pA.C6to vivace, presents a lively, sweeping motion from begin
ning to end. There is essentially one theme, stated at the beginning in what has
been described as a "tarantella rhythm," and it is out of this that the entire
movement grows.
Concerto for Horn and Orchestra in E-Flat Major, K. 495
By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Probably all, but certainly three, of Mozart's four horn concertos came into existence
through his intimate friendship with Ignaz Leutgeb (or Leitgeb), who at one time was
a horn player in the Archbishop's orchestra at Salzburg. Leutgeb later settled in a
suburb of Vienna (1777), where he combined horn playing with the running of a cheese
monger's shop ("the size of a snail's house" as it was described by Mozart's father
from whom Leutgeb had borrowed a sum of money for his rather unusual commercial enter
prise). The composer's relations with him were not without their amusing touches;
touches that bear on the history of these concertos.
Leutgeb was a proficient player, but otherwise an uneducated fellow and something of
a simpleton who would allow himself to serve as a butt for Mozart's somewhat Boeotian
sense of humor. He was frequently made the object of practical jokes for, as Mozart
once confessed, "I can never resist making a fool of Leutgeb." The spirit in which
the concertos were written is reflected in the various remarks adorning the autograph
scores. Thus K. 417 bears the inscription "W.A. Mozart took pity on Leitgeb, ass, ox,
and fool, in Vienna on March 27, 1783
the score of K. 495 is written in different
inks, red, black, blue and green, and that of the Rondo of K. 412 shows a drawing of
Leutgeb in action and is interspersed with ironic commentaries on the performer's
deficiencies.

Whatever Mozart's estimate of the capacities of Leutgeb, the concertos are certainly
virtuoso pieces. Though written for the Waldhorn or "natural" horn (valves having
not yet been invented) they constitute an exacting test even for a player on the
modern instrument. The solo part often reaches up to the highest note on the horn in
E flat (for which the last concertos are written), there are some difficult scale
passages, wide leaps from the high to the low register and vice versa, and long
sustained phrases
all of which makes severe demands on tongueing, technique, breath
control and the production of a round, equable tone- Yet Mozart, as the perfect
stylist he was, never places undue strain on his soloist, adjusting with minute
care structure and texture of the music to the limitation of the instrument. Where
the horn is most itself and reveals its true genius is in its capacity to sing and
to sing with a warm rich tone. Hence the profusion of cantablle themes which Mozart
scatters throughout this concerto.
TONIGHT'S SOLOIST ............
We are very pleased to have Timothy Swenson as our guest soloist for tonight's
performance. He is a 1976 graduate of Illinois State University, where he was
a prominent ensemble and chamber music player. He has performed with several
orchestras in the region, and has been a participant in the Sarasota Music
Festival in Florida. He serves as principal horn in the Kankakee Symphony Orchestra,
and will be featured with the orchestra later this year in the Britten "Serenade
for Tenor, Horn, and Strings."

I believe in one God,
Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible
and invisible,
In one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
Of the Father
before all ages,
God of God, light of light,
Very God of Very God,
begotten, not made,
of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made,
Who for us men
and our salvation
came down from heaven.
And became incarnate
by the Holy Ghost
of the Virgin Mary
and was made man,
And was crucified also for us
under Pontius Pilate,
suffered and was burled,
And the third day he rose again,
according to the scriptures,
and ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of the Fatl ,
and he shall come again
with glory
to judge the living and the dead,
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Ghost,
the lord and 1ife-giver,
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
together is adored and glorified,
who spake by the prophets,
I acknowledge one baptism
for the remission of sins, of the dead,
and the life of the world to come, Amen.

To Alma Mater, Olivet, We lift our voice in praise
For noble standards which we'll hold 'till ending of our days.
The time we spent within these halls will ne'er forgotten be,
For here we learned to know of truth, and truth will
make us free.
My Olivet, Our Olivet. Tho1life may lead us far apart,
I'll still revere you in my heart.
My Olivet, Our Olivet. I'll love the Christ you gave first part
and you old Olivet.
A SPECIAL THANKS TO: Mr. Steve Vanciel for light and staging,
Mr. Elton Elliott for electrical work, Mr. Jim Tripp for engineering
construction o f staging and seating, and Maintenance Department for
preparation and clean up.

The 38-voice Viking Male Chorus is carefully selected by audition from the stu
dents of O livet Nazarene College, and represents the full range of academic
majors and interests. They com bine the traditionally popular sound of men's
voices with the highest standards of musicianship, creating a listening experience
which is truly unique.
The Vikings are in regular demand for concerts, church services, service clubs,
conventions, and television appearances. They participated in the Inaugural
Activities during the inauguration of President jim m y Carter. The 1977-78
concert season included appearances in Nassau in the Bahamas, and at Walt
Disney World, Florida.
The conductor of the group is jo e M. Noble, who holds a bachelor's degree from
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and holds a master's degree from the University
of Iowa. He has com pleted all work and prelims for a doctoral degree from the
University of Iowa. Mr. N oble conducts Choral Union, teaches voice and m usic
education courses at Olivet.
O livet Nazarene College is a four-year liberal arts scho ol with 2,100 students,
and is located fifty miles south of Chicago in Kankakee, Illinois. Most of its stu
dents com e from the four midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and
W isconsin to take courses for majors and minors in 43 departments of study.
Dr. Leslie Parrott is president of the school which was founded in 1907.

Bellezza, che s ’ama
To love beauty is bliss for the heart. He is deemed blissful who has
love's blessing.
'Tis highest bliss to love if one is loved again. Who
seeks greater bliss is mad.
Toglietemi la vita ancor
Rather take my life ye cruel heavens!
If ye wish to rob my heart, take
my life! Deny me the day's beams, ye stern heavens!
If my pain please
you, rather take my life!
0, dolcissima speranza
Oh, sweet hope, you are the comfort of my heart, come to quench the
poison and to support my fidelity.
La speranza
Hope betrays me, it shows itself and then vanishes, as the wave fled
from the luckless Tantalus.
If some little joy is granted me, then a
hundred sorrows spoil it. Thus Titio's heart grows, only because it
is always consumed.
Vainement, ma bien-aimee
Since one cannot move these jealous guardians, Ah!, let me count
my sorrows and my emotion!
In vain, my beloved, one believes me to despair; near to your
locked door I wish yet to remain! The suns may be extinguished, the
nights replace the days, without you accusing and without me complain
ing, there shall I stay always!
I know that your heart is kind, and the hour soon will come when the
hand that repels me, will outstretch itself toward mine. Be not too slow
to let yourself be merciful.
If Rozenn does not arrive soon, I am going,
alas, to die!
Uber die Finsternis kurz vor dem Tode Jesu
Night and shadow shroud the Savior's countenance; and the Judge's
terror the Soul cannot bear. Ah, how he yearns for cheerfulness and
light. Father, oh how long Your Face delays.
Lord, have mercy! God, have mercy!
Per Fruhling
To new life awakened afore me Nature stands; soft breezes keep wafting
through the snow-covered fields. Up from its covering shell presses the
young shoot; the forest's gloomy resounds with psalms of birds.
Oh, Father, Your clemency is felt by hill and dale and field. The
meadows round are blooming in pearls of morning dew. Toward the flowering
meadow rings the herd's lowing in the vale; deep wriggling in the dust
below worms beyond count are seen.
His praises sing, my soul, the Lord who pleasures makes! His praises
sing and tell of Him, His Might's creations here! Here, from this blossomed
hill up to the starry course let our prayer take wing to lift your hymn
toward Heaven.
Jesus in Gethsemane
Look there! There in Gethsemane weeps, mourns, trembles the Holiest,
fighting now with lethal pain. See Him cry and praying kneel there,
bitter the cup, yet He drinks it all.
Look there, when once the grave will threaten and cold sweat breaks
on your brow: His mourning, His pains, His wrestling now with death
sweetens your last anguish for you.
Auf dem Kirchhofe
The day was heavy with rain and storm,
I passed by many a forgotten grave,
The stones and crosses were weatherbeaten, the wreaths old,
The names grown over, hardly legible.
The day was heavy with rain and storm,
On all the graves there froze the word: "Has been".
As if exhausted by the storms, the coffins slumbered;
On all the graves was peacefully thawing: "Reborn".
Standchen
Wie bist du, meine Konigin
The moon shines above the mountain
Just right for people in love;
In the garden ripples a fountain,
Elsewhere silence, far and wide.
Beside the wall in the shadow,
Three students are standing
With flute and violin and zither,
And they play and sing while playing.
The strains are stealing gently
Into the fairest maiden's dream;
She sees her blond beloved
And whispers: "Forget me not!"
How delightful you are, my queen,
Because of gentle kindness
You need but smile and scents of
Spring waft blissfully
Through my heart!
The splendor of unfolded roses,
Shall I compare it to yours?
Oh, above all else that blossoms,
Your flowering is delightful!
If you walk through arid deserts,
Green shadows will spread,
Where horrible•heat waves
Endlessly extend, what joy!
What bliss! Let me perish
In your arms! Within them,
Even death, even the
Bitterest deadly torture
Would seem an ecstasy!

Dies Bildness 1st bezaubernd schon
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
0 image angellike and fair!
No mortal can to thee compare!
1 feel it, how this heavenly sight
Prevades my heart with new delight.
This strange and still unknown desire
Has filled ray heart with glowing fire.
Could this emotion love reveal?
Ah yes! Tis love alone I feel, tis love,
Love alone!
Oh, how to see her I am yearning!
Oh, how to free her I am burning!
I would then, fond and true-What would I do?
Upon this heart would I press her,
Within these loving arms hold her.
Forever then she would be mine.
Una furtiva lagrima
Gaetano Donizetti
A single futive tear
Started in her eye. . .
She seemed to envy those happy girls. . .
What more do I want?
She love me; I've seen it.
Just for a moment to feel the
Beating of her heart! . . .
To mix a single moment all my sighs
With hers! . . .
Ah! Heaven above! to die . . .
Then I'd ask no more.
La donna e mobile
Giuseppe Verdi
Woman so changeable, swayed like a feather!
None can tell whether he should believe her
Seeming so amiable, always beguiling
Tearful or smiling, still a deceiver!
Woman capricious, swayed like a feather!
None can tell whether he should believe!
Low, how great misery with him abideth,
Who can findeth in all her graces!
But true felicity by him is wasted
Who ne'er hath tasted. Love's fond embraces!
Light hearted woman, swayed like a feather!
None can tell whether he should believe!
Auf dem Strom (A paraphrase of the Rellstab poem)
Franz Schubert
Here on thestrand I bid you farewell. Soon the skiff will glide quickly on the
river's currentand carry me away. Ah, the meadow has vanishedalready!
The shore slips by. My heart is drawn to the little house and Its bower, but the
river impatiently urges me forward. And there is the ocean-waste, without coast
or island. A shuddering dread takes hold of me. I hear no song from the shore,
only the cold wind and the gray sea-billows. My longing eyes search in vain for
land. Well, let me look then to the distant stars. It was by their mild light
that I first called her my own. Up there perhaps (oh consolation!) I shall
see her face again.

Pieta rispetto onore
Giuseppe Verdi
Traitors all! With England you combine again me! This it was the prophetic
pow'rs foretold me: Bebloody, bold, laugh to
scornhuman power, For none born of
woman shall harmthee!
No,I fear notyour power, nor
do I fear the boy who’s
your leader! This assault shall either on the throne seat me firmly or undo me
forever! And yet this feeling, As tho' my very lifeblood were congealing!
Not love, nor obedience, nor honor shall cheer thy days declining, Ah! There's
not a flow'r shall blossom, the sorrows of age to dispel; Nor for thy throne right
royal endearing words shall be given, Ah! Curses alone, oh, heaven! Shall be
thy parting knell!
Nuit d'Etoiles
Claude Debussy
Lovely night of stars with your veiling
light,And your soft breeze like a lyre,
Wistful sighing, Love undying, I dreamof those now gone, In the spell ofgentle
night comes to me a mystical hours, Listening long, I feel the sould of my love
Trembling here in dreaming bow'r.Once again I may behold in your eyes
the blue
of the skies, And this rose breathes your soul, And the stars are love in your eyes.
Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (I have become lost to the world)
Gustav Mahler
I have become lost to the world, on which I formerly wasted much time; It has
heard nothing for so long from me, It may well believe that I have died! I do
not care at all, If it considers me as dead. I also cannot contradict it, For
really I have died, Died to the world. I have died to the world’s turmoil and
rest in a silent domain. I live alone in my heaven, In my love, in my song.
Bella siccorae un angelo
Gaetano Donizetti
Fair as an angel from above, earth’s orb awhile adorning,
Fresh as the rose that breathing love beams fondly on the morning;
Eyes that each sense seems wooing, glances the heart subduing,
Locks that the raven's wing excel,
smiles fraught with a magicspell,
Fraught with a magic spell!
Sweet innocence her soul arrays, naught of her beauty dreaming,
Each look her artless thought betrays, a heartwith kindness teeming;
Pity on woe out pouring, in grace o'er mortalssoaring,
Heav'n gave this sweetest angel birth, blessings to shed on earth.

A larg e room in the house o f Don Pasquale in Rome in the 1800's.
The newly hired servants o f Don Pasquale enter and sing a chorus in which
they gossip about the e x c itin g events th at have taken place since t h e ir master,
a 70 year-old bachelor, has taken a w ife . The mock marriage ceremony was a
t r ic k by Don Pasquale's frien d s and his nephew to discourage the old man from
marrying a t his age. His new b rid e , Norina, is a c t u a lly his nephew Ernesto 's
betrothed whom Pasquale has never seen before. She is now going about the
task o f hen-pecking and be-deviling the old man so he w ill want a d ivorce.
They w ill reveal the p lo t to him, and hopefully he w ill consent to the marriage
o f Ernesto and Norina which is ex a ctly what he does a t the opera's conclusion.
Meanwhile, the servants sing how there is no end to the confusion and running
about, and not a moment's re s t from answering b e lls . They go on ch attering
about the quarrel between Master and Madame a t dinner on the matter o f going

Ride On, King Jesus
Hall Johnson (1888-1970)
Johnson, a leader in the development of black choral music in America, was a prolific composer
and arranger. Organizer of the New York City Festival Chorus and the popular Hall Johnson
Choir, he also found time to write cantatas, operettas, and art songs, of which one of the
best known is Ride On, King Jesus.
God Is My Strength
Bernard Hamblen (20th century)
This stirring work dramatically portrays the theme of God's unfailing strength and dependa
bility foundthroughout the scriptures, from which the text is taken.
The Dodger
Aaron Copland (1900)
This comical
song, popularized by Mrs. Emma Dusenberry in the 1880's, was supposedly used in
the Cleveland-Blaine presidental campaign. Copland arranged it and included it in his col
lection, Old American Songs.
At the River
Aaron Copland (1900)
An old American hymn tune, the words and melody are by the Rev. Robert Lowry written in 1865.
Arise, Ye Subterranean Winds
Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
Written by Purcell as the climactic aria in his opera The Tempest, based loosely on a Shake
spearean play by the same name, this work is in the popular Italian style used often in 17th
century England. The setting is an island where the powerful Ariel summons the forces of
nature to punish the evil men who would usurp the throne of the rightful king.
Bright Is the Ring of Words
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
This beautiful setting of a Robert Louis Stevenson poem is part of a collection called
Songs of Travel, published in 1960.
The Shepherdess
Harold W. Friedell (20th century)
Contemporary composer Friedell's setting of a poem by Alice Meynell.
Morgen!
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Morgen! (tomorrow) begins on the sharpened tonic and ends on the leading tone, giving the
singer the feeling of beginning and ending nowhere. The thoughts are about love and the
silence it demands; great silence which love can bridge, but not words. It is the fourth song
in the set of Op. 27 which Strauss dedicated to his wife on their wedding day in Sept., 1894.
L'Heure exquise
Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947)
Hahn, born in Venezuela and raised in Paris, sets this haunting piece in the magic hour be
tween day and evening when the moon is pale and the sun is beginning to set. The ethereal
feeling shows the influence of the French style.
Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre
Georges Bizet (1838-1875)
In act two of the opera Carmen, Carmen and her friends are entertaining soldiers in a smokefilled tavern. Outside, the famed matador, Escamillo, is being hailed by the crowds. One of
Carmen's friends invites Escamillo inside for a drink, to which the hero responds with a song
about the dangers and glories of being a matador, or toreador.
0 du mein holder Abendstern
Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
The noble knight Tannhauser, cannot find forgiveness on earth for his sin of spending a year
with the goddess Venus, so the maid Elizabeth asks the Virgin Mary to take her as atonement.
Her faithful friend Wolfram hears her final prayer and petitions the evening star to greet
Elizabeth and guide her on her path to heaven. This story is typical of Wagner's music
dramas which frequently combine elements of religion and mysticism.
Largo al factotum della citta
Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868)
Entering from offstage and singing to himself, the merry barber Figaro sings about his life
as a jack-of-all-trades, a factotum, whose profession gives him entry to everyone's home; thus,
he is a convenient instrument for the execution of the intrigues of young lovers as well as
old rogues. He displays his loquatious character and the charmed life he leads in this
brilliant and exceedingly rapid aria. Everyone needs Figaro for something and he tries to
placate them all at once!

(motet for five voices)
Sing Ye Merrily
Chorale
Jesu, priceless treasure,
Source of purest pleasure,
Truest friend to me;
Ah, how long I've panted
And my heart hath fainted,
Thirsting, Lord, for Thee!
Thine I am, 0 spotless Lamb.
I will suffer nought to hide Ttnee,
Nought I ask beside Thee.
Arnold Mendelssohn (1855-1933)
A ndante
Death, I do not fear thee, Though thou standest near me;
Grave, I calmly spurn thee, Though to dust thou turn me!
Strong in hope and faith, Rising up and singing, I shall,
heavenward winging,
Soar and vanquish Death, Amd with the blest shall forever rest!
He that reigns will rend my chains: Earth may vanish. Heaven
may sever,
God is God forever.
Allegro-molto Moderato
Ye are not of the flesh, but of the Spirit,
if in your hearts the spirit abideth.
If Jesu's Spirit be not yours,
ye are not His.
Chorale
Hence, all fears and sadness.
For the Lord of gladness,
Jesus, enters in;
They who love the Father,
Though the storms may gather.
Still have peace within;
Yea, whate'er we here must bear,
Still in Thee lies purest pleasure,
Jesu, priceless treasure.

Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days.
Behold, my life-time is as nothing in Thy sight.
Surely every man stands as a mere breath!

Towards Bethlehem goes a donkey,
I remember, I remember,
laden with chocolate.
It carries its chololate-pot,
I remember, I remember
I remember, yet I forget,
its chocolate mill and its stove.
Mary, Mary, come here running,
because they are eating up all the chocolate.
Inside the gate of Bethlehem
I remember, I remember,
gypsies have entered;
and from the child which is in the cradle
the swaddling clothes have they taken.
Mary, Mary, come here running,
because they are seizing the swaddling clothes,
Mary, Mary, come here flying,
because they are carrying off the swaddling clothes.
With a hat of straw
at the gate arrives a Galician;
while he was worshipping the Child
a calf ate his sombrero.
Mary, Mary come here running,
because the calf is eating the hat,
May, Mary, come here flying,
to comfort the Galician who is here crying.

Jesus, Jesus R est Your Head
Appalachian Mountain Carol
Arr. Salli Terri
(choir with alto solo)
Jesus, Jesus rest your head,
You have got a manger bed.
All the evil folk on earth
Sleep in feathers at their birth.
O Lord God, hear Thou my pray'r,
Help Thou me, and give ear to my prayer.
Daily do I worship Thy great name and Thy pow'r.
Thou alone canst help me. O send me Thy peace and love.
0 protect me, my God.
Let me never stray, 0 my Savior.
Leave me not, 0 God of my salvation
1 will sing to the Lord as long as I live.
And praise Thy great name while I have my being.
Hear my pray'r, help Thou me, and give ear to my pray'r.
Glory to God. Glory to God.
— Psalm 104:33
Have you heard about our Jesus?
Have you heard about his fate?
How His mother went to that stable
On that Christmas eve so late.
Winds were Mowin', cows were lowin',
Stars were glowin', glowin’,
Jesus, Jesus rest your head,
You have got a manger bed.
To that manger came three wise men
Bringin' gifts from hin and yon
For the mother and the father
And the blessed little Son.
Shepherds left their fields and flocks
And sat beside the ass and ox.
Jesus, Jesus rest your head,
You have got a manger bed
THE NORDIC CHOIR
LUTHER COLLEGE/DECORAH, IOWA
The Luther College Choir interprets in a superbly
distinctive style, the finest in sacred music. Ranked by
audiences and critics as one o f the leading choral
groups of our day, the choir makes annual tours w ith ex
tended trips to the Coasts and Europe. Numerous
special appearances, such as seven Music Educators
C onferences and five National NBC and CBS radio
broadcasts, are part of the Luther College tradition.
Luther College, founded in 1861, is a college of the
Am erican Lutheran Church with a student body of
2000. The campus is located in Decorah, Iowa, on the
bluffs of the scenic Upper Iowa River. Most of the
buildings and facilities have been constructed in the
last tw o decades.
In 1969, the Nordic Choir was asked to participate in
the International University Choral Festival sponsored
by Lincoln Center, New York. The N ordic Choir was one
of three United States choirs selected to appear.
In the sum m er of 1969, the choir toured Europe
presenting concerts in Norway, East Germany, and
West Germ any. In 1973, the choir toured Romania and
C zechoslovakia under the sponsorship of Am erican
Youth Performs, a program o f Am erican Airlines. A tour
of Norway, Denmark, Germ any, and France was made
in 1977.
On May 31, 1976, the choir represented the state of
Iowa in the Bicentennial Parade of Am erican Music
which was held at the John F. Kennedy Center of the
Perform ing Arts in Washington, D.C.
The 1979-1980 concert tour was made in cooperation
with Eastern Airlines and included perform ances in the
Northeast, Southeast, and southwestern parts o f the
United States. C oncerts were also presented in the
Dominican Republic and M exico City.
In March, 1980, the choir appeared at the North C en
tral Division Conference of the Am erican Choral Direc
tors Association in Madison, W isconsin.
The Preus Library opened in 1969 and is con
sidered to be a model o f aesthetic and functional
library design. An addition to the College Union
opened in May, 1973. The latest construction is the
Center for Faith and Life which includes a major
auditorium . The next building scheduled is a facility
for music.
Luther’s liberal arts curriculum offers 38 m ajors
tow ard the bachelor of arts degree. Many program s
for specific professional training, such as internships
and professional semesters, are available in the strong
program of general education. The 4-1-4 calendar
provides additional opportunities to explore special in
terests in depth both on and off campus. During the
January term , opportunities include independent
study, research, special seminars and selected lec
tures, off-cam pus program s, on the job experiences
and foreign study travel program s.
The academ ic program at Luther is a total ex

PROGRAM NOTES FOR JOSEPH POSTIN
Honor and Arms
George F. Handel
This aria from Handel's opera Samson depicts Samson in his lowest state.
Samson has already been betrayed by Delilah, blinded, and stripped of
his power. Now working in the mill, he is mocked by the Roman officer
Harapha.
It Is Enough
Felix Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn's oratorio Eli1ah includes this aria. Here we find Elijah
discouraged and at the point of ending his life. The Israelites have
defied God, slain His prophets, and are now seeking to take Elijah's
life.
Les Berceaux (The Cradles)
Gabriel Faure
The poet best states the content of the text in saying, "as men sail
away on those ships, they will mysteriously feel the hands of their
mothers still rocking their cradles as the ship is rocked to and fro."
Botschaft (The Message)
Johannes Brahms
This is a poem of two young lovers whose life together is threatened
by tragedy. The piece stresses their undying love.
Ich Grolle Nicht (Why Blame Thee Now?)
Robert Schumann
This is the seventh song in the famous song cycle Dichterliebe which
Schumann wrote in 1840. It calls for the intensity of a bitter irony
and disillusionment rather than the histrionic anger with which it is
too often sung.
Non piu andrai (Le Nozze di Figaro)
Wolfgang A. Mozart
After living a life of luxury, the young Cherubino is drafted. Figaro
is feeling elation at the thought of getting Cherubino out of his life.
He proceeds to tell him in detail all of the glories of war.

Id o u b le chonut io n m ixed ehonui ]
Shout and be jo y f u l, a l l ye lands,
J o y f u lly sing to God the Lord,
Serve Him with jo y and w ith gladness.
Come ye before the Lord God with singing.
For know ye th at the Lord is our God,
He hath made us a l l , not we o u rselves,
We are His flo c k , in His q u iet pastures grazing.
Enter His gates to give Him thanksgiving,
And in to His presence to p raise Him.
Sing and p ra ise His name and b less i t .
For the Lord is gracious,
His loving-kindness e v e rla s tin g .
His truth endureth evermore.
G lory to the Father and to the Son
And to the Holy S p ir it .
As in the beginning
Now and evermore s h a ll be. Amen!

Great is Jehovah, the Lord,
For Heaven and earth t e s t i f y
to His great pow'r!
'T is heard in the f ie r c e raging storm,
In the t o r re n t's loud thundering ro a r;
Great is Jehovah, the Lord,
'T is heard in the ru s tlin g o f leaves in the fo r e s t,
Seen in the waving o f golden f ie ld s ,
In lo v e lie s t flo w e rs' gaudy a rra y ,
'T is seen in myriad s ta rs o f heaven,
F ie rce i t sounds in the thunder's loud r o l l ,
And flames in the b rig h tly quivering fla s h .
Yet c le a r e r thy throbbing heart to thee
Proclaim s Jehovan's pow'r,
the Lord God Almighty.
Look thou praying to heav'n,
And hope fo r grace and fo r mercy.
Great i s Jehovah, the Lord!

It Is Enough (Elijah)
Felix Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah includes this aria. Here we find
Elijah discouraged and at the point of ending his life. The
Israelites have defied God, slain His prophets, and are now
seeking to take Elijah's life.
Non piu Andrai (Le Nozze di Figaro)
Wolfgang A. Mozart
After living a life of luxury, the young Cherubino is drafted.
Figaro is feeling elation at the thought of getting Cherubino
out of his life. He proceeds to tell him in detail all the
glories of war.
Si, mi chiamano Mimi (La Boheme)
Giacomo Puccini
The poet Rudolph sits vainly, trying to write in his garret, when
there is a knock at the door. Mimi, a neighbor, needs her candle
to be relit. Rudolph is taken with the frail and appealing girl
of twenty-two. He tells her about himself and asks her, in return,
to tell him her own story. She replies in what is perhaps the most
moving self-description in all opera, the
smalldetails of herlife
as a seamstress, somehow quite adequately revealing a delicate
and tender nature.
Quando me'n vo soletta (La Boheme)
Giacomo Pucccini
Musetta's former lover, Marcello, pretends utter indifference toward
her when the two meet in a local cafe. In an attempt to attract
his attention, she furiously smashes a plate on the ground to the
delight of the crowd which has assembled. Unabashed, Musetta
continues in one of the best known numbers of opera, "Musetta's
Waltz," making Marcello aware, in spite of considerable teasing,
that she still loves him.
Si pu, si puo! (Pagliacci)
Ruggiero Leoncavallo
The action takes place in a village In Calabrina, Italy. In the
prologue, Tonis appears before the curtain to explain to the
audience that the play that they are about to see is no fantasy
but is, as he says, "a picture of life," presenting the emotions
and passions of real men and women.
Madamina! II catalogo (Don Giovanni)
Wolfgang A. Mozart
Leporello, the servant of the notorious Don Juan, explains to a
former sweetheart, Elvira, that his master's list of lady friends
in Italy, Germany, France, Turkey, and Spain is seemingly endless.
Largo al factotum della cita (II Barbiere di Siviglia)
Gioacchino Rossini
Entering from offstage and singing to himself, the merry barber
Figaro sings about his life as a jack-of-all-trades, a factotum,
whose profession gives him entry to everyone's home; thus, he is
a convenient instrument for the execution of the intrigues of
young lovers as well as old rogues. He displays his loquatious
character and the charmed life he leads in this brilliant and
exceedingly rapid aria. Everyone seems to need Figaro for some
thing and he tries to placate them all at once!
0 du mein holder Abendstern (Tannhauser)
Richard Wagner
The noble knight Tannhauser, cannot find forgiveness on earth for
his sin of spending a year with the goddess Venus, so the maid
Elizabeth asks the Virgin Mary to take her as atonement. Her
faithful friend Wolfram hears her final prayer and petitions the
evening star to greet Elizabeth and guide her on her path to heaven.
