Explore technology at the library
Go beyond email and word
processing and do more with technology. The library is encouraging
adults to dig a little deeper with
some new technology classes. You
aren’t expected to be an expert; just
be eager to learn.
Helen Gregg, the library’s
technology trainer, is encouraging
those 60 and older not to be afraid
to play around with technology.
Digital Literacy for Older Adults
is a hands-on computer class that
will allow you to work with one
application at a time. Topics will
include Skype, Facebook and online newsletters. These classes occur the second and fourth Tuesday
of each month.
Adults of any age who like to be
creative should try out Make and
Take Tech for Grownups. In this
hands-on, guided class, you will
use computer programs on projects like T-shirt transfers, holiday
cards, magnets and ornaments.
Make connections by learning
how to solder. An important tech
skill, soldering is necessary for
building components. Learn how
to solder in this class for beginners. With a soldering iron, patrons will learn how to melt solder
material to form a bond between
two items. All participants will
complete a soldering project that
will be provided.
The library also continues to
offer classes on 3D printing. In

this hands-on class, participants
will use TinkerCAD, a free webbased application. Participants
will become reasonably proficient
in using TinkerCAD to create an
object to print on the 3D Printer.
TinkerCAD is accessible anywhere you have an internet connection so you can work on your
file after class if needed.
After completing this class,
participants may reserve the 3D
printer online to print files.
All of the library’s technology
classes are free, but registration is
required. Visit the online calendar
at www.salinapubliclibrary.org or

Read and discuss
for Salina Reads!
The first month of Salina Reads has flown by, but
there is still time to discuss
this year’s selections. Pick
up a copy of “Digging to
America” by Anne Tyler and “The Namesake”
by Jhumpa Lahiri. Both
books deal with cultural
identity.
For the first time this
year, we have also selected
a children’s book — “The
Tree in the Courtyard:
Looking Through Anne
Frank’s Window” by Jeff
Gottesfeld.
Stop by the library to
check out these titles and
participate in one of the
Salina Reads-interactive
displays.
You can also attend a
book discussion on the
adult selections at 7 p.m.
Oct. 13 at Kansas Wesleyan University in the
Student Activity Center.
Longtime CLASS instructor Kamila Dandu
will provide book-inspired
snacks for Books & Bites
at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 or Oct.
27 in the library’s Technology Center Conference
Room. Registration is
required for this program
that combines food and
book discussion. Visit the
library’s online calendar.

Circulation changes in library’s future
Beginning Jan. 3, 2017, Salina
Public Library will be transitioning
to one circulation desk on the main
floor.
The effect of this change in Youth
Services will be
A message from
time and space
Joe McKenzie

expertise toward
Director
services to children and families, children’s book
and media collections and expanded programming for children and
families, including more outreach
and community engagement work.
Their mission is to get more books
into the hands of children and
parents.
Our extensive work at the library
with children and families is as important as anything we do. We have
a tremendous facility and collection
of materials in our Youth Services
Library. Now, we’ll have more time
to maximize our efforts towards
connecting families to reading and
learning.
Currently, materials are checked
out and returned on both floors of
the library. After the transition, all
materials should be returned for
check-in to the main circulation
desk, just inside the doors of the library. All new and renewing library
cards, fines paid, account inquiries
and materials-on-hold functions
will be focused in the same department. This will provide for more
consistency of policy and service.
The library checks out about
540,000 items annually. To help in
the transition of volume, the library
will transfer a couple of employees
from Youth Services to Circulation.
For the convenience of patrons,
the library will add a fourth selfcheck-out unit in the Youth Services Library. The speed of these
machines has made them very
popular with all ages.
We look forward to the opportunities these changes will create for
patron service.
