When Fairtrade goods are bought a premium is paid to the producer to ensure that the producer earns enough money in return for his or her labour to buy food, shelter, drink fresh water, and benefit from healthcare and education by making suitable provision in their own communities. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees sustainability and protection for the environment. Fairtrade produce/goods are recognisable by the Fairtrade mark awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation, www.fairtrade.org.uk, which was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, New Consumer, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement. Andrew Lacey, Manager, GLO Book Shop, who contributed the two pictures on this page, wrote on behalf of GLO Book Shop and Coffee Shop as follows: The GLO Centre is delighted to be able to support the Fairtrade Forum as Motherwell takes on the status of Fairtrade town. The Bookshop is a retailer of Christian books, media & gift products and we take very seriously our responsibility to promote good stewardship and a fair deal for our suppliers. In addition to ranges from Tearcraft & Jubilee products, we have the privilege of selling products from various other smaller Fairtrade and social justice projects from as far afield as Rwanda and India. Some of these suppliers have been brought to our attention by customers, and it has been a pleasure to take these suggestions on board. Many of our book products are printed on paper from renewable sources. Tea and coffee in our Coffee Shop is sourced from Kingdom Coffee, a major Fairtrade supplier to the catering trade. We look forward continuing to improve our focus on Fairtrade, and continually assess our operation to find more sustainable ways of working. Subsequently the range of Fairtrade products Scotmid stocks has become extremely popular amongst its customers, especially the range of Fairtrade chocolate!
