Grade 10 First Day of School: MEntor Program
M.E. LaZerte has recently been trained in the world renowned Link Crew Program, which we refer to as the MEntor Program. The sole purpose of the program
is help new students feel more comfortable, as well as to assist them to achieve
success in their first year of high school. Every Grade 10 student will be assigned
two MEntor Leaders. These leaders are Grade 11 or 12 students who exemplify
the characteristics of a good role model and leader to guide our new students. On
the first day of Grade 10, students will meet their MEntor. Here’s what can be expected on the First Day of Grade 10:
1. All students will meet in the Elniski Gym at 9 am. Students will receive their
locker assignment during registration, so please ensure bags and belongings are in
lockers prior to 9am.
2. After a short presentation in the Elniski Gym, students will move into a classroom with their
MEntor group of 10
-12 students. There
will be a variety of
team building activities that are active.
Please make sure
clothing does not
restrict movement.
3. For students who
have purchased
their $18 Student
Union Membership,
there will be a free
lunch in the cafeteria with activities as well as a complimentary T-Shirt. The cafeteria will also be
open for students wanting to buy food and drinks.
4. During the afternoon, students will attend their Day 1 classes. During the Block
4 time slot, all students will complete a questionnaire. By participating in this day
and completing the questionnaire, students will receive 1 credit - Introduction to
Mentorship and start their high school career!
5. The day will end with a short assembly in the Elniski Gym and students will
have had their best first day of school experience ever!
We are excited to meet you as our newest Voyageurs!

There is much to experience at our school and our
high expectations of academic effort, behavior
(Respect Happens at LaZerte), and attendance
(minimum of 90% attendance expected for optimal
learning and to participate in school activities &
events) means we want everyone to take a role in
working together. We are looking forward to a successful and exciting year to come, and we welcome
you into our M.E. LaZerte family!

2014 - 2015 Students Union
Welcome new and old Voyageurs
to M.E Lazerte for a wonderful
year! Being a Voyageur is not just
a title, but something with which
to be filled with pride. With a lot
of hard work, a Voyageur overcomes obstacles and endures difficulties to get to their destination.
A Voyageur shows respect to self, those who surround them, and their environment, and this is exactly
what M.E. LaZerte students do! In addition to respecting one another, M.E LaZerte students also help
each other whenever they can. Students Union is here
to help you get involved! The Students Union committees work hard for you to get to know other students by hosting many different events and activities.
We want your year to be eventful and full of memories. No matter what your hobbies and interests are,
Students Union has a place for you to get involved. If
you have an idea, we want to hear from you! Remember, you are a high school student for three years.
Make the best of it by coming out to events with your
friends, volunteering for the school and community,
and simply taking part! Your high school memories
will be ones that you never forget. We invite you to
make the most of your time at LaZerte! Have a great
year!

FYSci Health Science Camp
The FYSci Health Science Camp provides hands-on research experience
for Grade 11 students in Alberta. It is
held for one week in the summer at
the University of Alberta. At the
FYSci Health Science camp, students
explore science career options, conduct experiments,
tour research labs, and attend lectures by university
researchers. The eligibility to take part in the FYSci
camp includes 75% standing in Math 20, Biology
20, and one other grade 11 science, recommendations from two teachers (one science and one other),
and a transcript or copy of a recent report card or
progress report. Congratulations to Emily Nguyen,
Pearl Tsui and Felicia Lim who have been selected
for the FYSci Camp at the University of Alberta in
July, 2014. Way to represent, Voyageurs!
Music Notes
Our music program at M.E. LaZerte this year was
phenomenal, and the positive energy that surrounds
our growing talent is absolutely amazing! We keep
adding to the wonderful traditions that have already
been established here, and this year we hosted our
first ever School Song contest! It was met with numerous submissions of exceptional quality and
school spirit! We also submitted a version of O Canada, sung by our school choir, that has been used repeatedly at our EPSB district meetings every week!
Truly, it was an incredible year in music at LaZerte.
In February LaZerte hosted a Fine Arts interactive
workshop for potential Grade 9 students to experience what the Fine Arts options were all about. In
March, Steele Heights, Londonderry and Dr. Donald
Massey students participated in combined rehearsals
with the LaZerte band. The big event of the year was
in April when our band and choir traveled to Nelson
BC for four exciting days to participate in the Nelson
Cantando Music Festival. Our band and choir both
received Silver for their performances…well done!
Much fun was had there with a student dance, professional concerts, and a late night theater movie on the
last night! Two weeks later, the band participated in
the Kiwanis Festival where our band received the rating of “Distinction”. Katelyn Tanner (Grade 12) received a “Superior” rating for her Solo performance.
Congratulations to all!
Our Contemporary Music students worked on two
exciting projects to finish the year. One was a remix
assignment where students recorded their own loops
and tracks to mix into an “unknown” song. Once the
loops were ready, students had two classes to remix a
popular song with their own material. The results
were amazing! It was interesting to hear the two different versions of each song from the two classes.
The final project was a video assignment where the
students created the soundtrack for a short video that
they created. Again, many amazing and creative projects were displayed at an in-class viewing premiere!
We had our year end concert on May 15th and our
audience was treated to a drum line routine followed
by performances by the choir, jazz band, and concert
band. Throughout the evening, Grade 12 students described their favorite memories from the past three
years in music before introducing the next songs.
This made for plenty of laughs and shared memories
for all students to reflect on. Recognition was also
given to the following award winners: Most Outstanding Musician Band: Bethany Groner. Most Out-
“It Takes A Village”
In the interest of mentorship and meaningful community engagement we decided to try something
different at M.E. LaZerte. This Spring, a team of
staff including Administration and our School Resource Officer, Constable Jomha, headed over to
Londonderry Mall to engage and communicate with
our neighbours. Our intention was to create opportunities for our students and community to come together in a positive and inspirational way.
We spent time at the mall having conversations with
our neighbours and forging the beginning of relationships. We listened to their concerns and witnessed their passion for the ‘next’ generation. We
have already seen some tangible outcomes from this
venture with two seniors working alongside our
Leadership students planting
flowerbeds and gardens.
We are grateful
for the opportunity to bring our
philosophy
of
“Respect Happens
at LaZerte” to life
with our students
and community.

had a positive showing at the city championship. They
will continue to put in the work to be one of the top teams
in the city. Our Voyageur golf team was on par this year,
with many of our golfers in the top 5 in the city. There
were record numbers of competitors in cross country running for the season, and it
proves that our coaches have
the runners in the right gear!
This is a very enthusiastic
group that always places well
at the city meets. We are looking for some positive times
next season and the goal for our athletes is to qualify for
Provincials. Our soccer season was a highlight this year as
the girls were the top team in their pool but lost in a very
tough game in the quarter-finals. The senior boys dominated the regular season not losing in one match. They
played exceptionally well in the final City Championship
game but the wind and Beaumont did not cooperate and
we proudly won silver medals. Rugby Voyageurs competed hard this year with our senior girls reaching the play
-offs. Both teams also had a very strong showing in the
sevens tournament hosted by the Pirates Rugby Cub. The
track team sent 6 athletes to the city championships this
year with two outstanding students advancing to provincials. Congratulations to Veon McCalla for qualifying in
the 100m and 200m and Garret Deep for qualifying in the
Shot Putt. On an alumni note, former Voyageur Shannon
Szabados played Canadian Women's Hockey in goal as
they went on to win the gold medal...a proud moment for
all of us at M.E. LaZerte! As the athletic director for the
past few years, Mr. Staples would like to wish the staff
and students at M.E. LaZerte ongoing success as he continues to work at our school with a new partner in athletics. Mr. Riley Carlton is a former Voyageur and he knows
the spirit we have in our school to make a difference in the
student athlete experience. Our entire school's leadership,
dedication and teamwork will continue to make a positive
difference in our student’s lives and we are looking forward to another outstanding year in 2014-2015!
Excellence in Voyageur Athletics
We have had a great year in Athletics! At our athletic
awards luncheon in June, we were able to congratulate
Sydney Kosmin, Brian Lardner, Kathleen Nguyen, Aleksa
Ilic, Angela Tan and Khalel Abdelmalek as they took
home the respective male and female "athlete of the year"
honors for their grade level. To be selected for these prestigious awards the athletes played for various teams
throughout the school year and displayed outstanding athleticism and leadership as a Voyageur.
All of our teams had a very positive year, and hundreds of
students took part in the enormous diversity of team offerings that allowed them to be a proud Voyageur! Badminton carried over 20 athletes this year, and our coaches look
to build on that base with a strong core of athletes that
went to the city championships. Congratulations to Priscilla Cheung and Maham Masoud who received silver medals at the Badminton Provincials. Congratulations also
goes to all of our basketball teams as they all played in the
newly formed Metro Athletics league. The season was
very competitive for all teams as they build for next year
to compete for a city championship. The senior boys and
girls are especially looking forward to travelling to California next year to compete internationally to gain valuable experience.
The football program continues to build its reputation as
contenders in their tier. The senior team finished in the
top four and boasts an incredible group of hard working
players and that include a strong effort from our incoming
grade 9’s that attended the spring camp. Our volleyball
coaches have continued to build
with a very solid showing by our
junior boys team losing in the semifinal this past season. There are
many powerful players returning
next season that will ensure success
in the fight for a championship. Our
swim team, one of the largest team in the school, had a
great season! After dominating Tier II the past three years
they team moved up to Tier I this past season where they

What is an IB Education?
International Baccalaureate is
unique because of its academic
and personal rigour. At M.E.
LaZerte we challenge students to
excel in their studies and in their
personal growth. We aim to inspire a quest for learning
throughout life that is marked by
enthusiasm and empathy. IB aspires to develop well-rounded
students with character who respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind, are confident in their own identities,
make ethical decisions, join with
others in celebrating our common
humanity and are prepared to apply what they learn in real-world,
complex and unpredictable situations. IB offers high-quality programs of international education
that share a powerful vision. Informed by the values described
in the learner profile, an IB education:
 focuses on learners - IB’s student-centered program promotes healthy relationships,
ethical responsibility and personal challenge
 develops effective approaches to teaching and learning IB programs help students to
develop the attitudes and
skills they need for both academic and personal success
 works within global contexts - IB programs increase understanding of languages and cultures, and explore globally significant ideas and issues
 explores significant content - IB programs offer a curriculum that is broad and balanced, conceptual and
connected. IB learners strive to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled,
open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. These attributes represent a broad range of
human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond intellectual development and academic success.
We aspire to assist in the development of these skills in all of our students, but the IB Diploma Programme is
recognized as university preparation to give students an advantage in learning course curriculum at an advanced level. All M.E. LaZerte students in pre-IB and those who are interested and/or new to our school are
invited to the “How to Thrive in IB” information session which will be held during flex block on Sept. 10th
in our theatre. If students have questions about timetables or programming, please contact Ms. Fischer in
Room 272. Also, please check out the Learner Profile video on the IB website at http://www.ibo.org/
programmes/profile/ . Our IB Voyageurs are phenomenal, and we are looking forward to an exciting year!

Website News
At M.E. LaZerte
this year we have
given our website a
fresh face lift. Information is now
more easily accessible with drop
down menus and
scrolling news items on the main page. All of our
events and other important dates can be found
through the Calendar tab. In addition, Constable
Jomha has created his own Constable's Corner with
safety tips for our students. If you are a parent with
children at M.E. LaZerte check out the bottom of
the home page to subscribe to the Principal's Newsletter where important information will be emailed
directly to you. Keep checking back for new content
and news and information on school wide events!
Agenda Book or Digital Application?
Many students have traditionally used an agenda book
for recording important dates, assignments & quizzes,
and for goal setting and planning out their busy schedules! But our students have told us they now use their
phones and electronic devices to keep track of the
same information, and that they always have it with
them...similar to what many adults do! It is because of
this student feedback that we are experimenting with a
digital application, the “MEL APP”, that will contain
the agenda book information along with a pre-built
calendar of school events and activities. We are hoping
this will be useful to students, especially as we have a
varied calendar and different start and end times
throughout the year. The paper copy of the agenda will
still be available to those who request it, and students
can access both if that is what works best for them!
We are looking forward to seeing how we can continue to best support our students and their learning!
Changing the Way We Communicate/Staying
Connected
M.E. LaZerte is a bustling community and
one of the challenges
we face is making sure
that we communicate
information that is relevant for our students.
This past year we started using an app called
Remind101 as one of
the many methods to
get information. Remind 101 (now renamed Remind) has
allowed us to connect
with our students and
parents to provide important immediate information directly to
their cell phone in the
form of a text message
or an email. All communications are safe
because phone numbers are always kept
private and messages can only be sent from the
school. Students and parents cannot respond. We
have had huge success using this app in the past year
and we want to continue connecting in this manner.
Information is usually sent out 3 times a week and is
not more than 140
characters long. And
what will you receive
when you sign up?
Weekly updates on
what is happening

Get Involved in Student
Leadership!
There is so much going on at M.E.
LaZerte every day, and we have
one of the best Student Leadership
programs of any school in the
city! From Welcome Week fun to
the LaZerte Idol competition to
our Neighbourhood Christmas party to the Pink Shirt
Day for anti-bullying to our infamous
Taste of LaZerte...we have activities
and events that run everyday in some
way, shape, or form! You would have
to work at it not to be involved in the
positive
culture
building
activities
and events
that our
students host throughout our
school and our community!
We believe learning happens in all sorts of different ways for various students,
but our priority is in creating a positive school culture
that spills out into our families and communities so
that we continue to thrive and
grow. We are looking forward to
a new year and all of the excitement that comes with
it...welcome to LaZerte!
CTS Accomplishments
It has been another very busy but exciting year in the
Careers and Technology Study areas as we continue to
improve learning by enriching our courses with authentic activities. We have seen more engaged students with a learning goal in mind over the past year,
and some of our highlights include:
*M. E. LaZerte Skills Canada team has grown to include Mechanics, Construction, Digital Design, Culinary, Cosmetology, and Baking
11
*Our Knowledge and Employability students are
now in their second year of Adventures in the
Trades. This course allows them to participate in
one credit courses, reflecting individual trades
*In both Mechanics and Food Studies we have
combined courses with common learner outcomes
to enrich the course focus and make topics more
engaging
*For off campus programming we continue to increase the number of students who are given the
opportunities to experience the real world of work.
This experience may be pivotal in the career choices students make.
We have also increased the depth of the Registered
Apprenticeship Program by creating 4 for More,
allowing graduated students to register for a fourth
year and participate in RAP as well as allow students to work/gain apprenticeship hours/
accumulate high school credits. We are also offering all Voyageurs the opportunity to participate in
our Work Experience program during the summer
months. In addition, we have worked to increase
connections with FNMI students and introduced a
heritage activity in each CTS strand to engage our
learners for success!
In planning for the upcoming year we intend to:
1) increase the focus on developing professional
aptitudes in Cosmetology, Mechanics, & Culinary
Arts
2) provide increased knowledge and experience the
occupational areas of Health, Wellness, & Recreation
3) pilot pre-engineering course activities to enlighten students about the career choices in this area of
study.
We are planning a school-wide Career Pathways
Day on November 7th to assist our students in discovering career exploration roles as well as the educational aspects that support their aptitudes and
talents. It will be created in the form of a large
‘game’ with a series of activities and sessions
where student choices will determine their education level, income, and status…kind of like real
life! We are looking forward to helping students
build their career pathway, and we encourage parents and our community to come into our school to
share their expertise and experience. If you would
like to be part of this day, please contact us at
melazerte@epsb.ca

Circle of Courage at ME LaZerte
We continue to connect our students to our community, and have implemented our Circle of Courage group
based out of Room 167 with Veronica Graff as our
liaison. The Circle of Courage has four main components which include Belonging, Mastery, Independence and Generosity. The Circle of Courage meets on
Wednesdays throughout the year during the flex tutorial time. The group usually starts with a smudge and
then sessions are facilitated utilizing the Circle of
Courage model. There is always a snack provided for
the participants, too, and often includes homemade
cinnamon sugar bannock! This past year students had
the opportunity to learn about Belonging-Being a respectful part of a group, family, and culture; MasteryAchieving short and long term goals; IndependenceDemonstrate personal responsibility; & GenerositySharing and supportive time with family, friends, and
the school community. There have been some junior
high schools that have participated in our activities
and we always welcome students and staff that have
an interest in the program. This year our students
helped with the Taste of LaZerte to serve fried bannock and moose meat, they set up and welcomed new
Voyageurs and their families to
our Open House, and they also
participated in the Soup, Bannock and Craft night. They are
an active and connected group of
students, and we always welcome more to join us!
Through Our Eyes We
See
Through Our Eyes We
See is a literary magazine
that showcases the creative side of M.E. LaZerte. Its first edition, published in 2012, consisted
of 27 pages printed inhouse. This year’s edition was completely designed by Zakiya
Kudoos, a Grade 12 student, and professionally
printed by Friesens. It
features 32 pages of student photographs, creative prose, artwork, and
poetry. The magazine’s
growth proves that students desire an opportunity to express themselves through writing
and visual arts. Reflecting upon the world in
which they live and sharing those perceptions
provides contributing
students a unique opportunity to be creative and
share their talents with
the M.E. LaZerte community. We
encourage photographers,

and poets to submit their
work to be published in
Through Our Eyes We
See to share their vision
with the student community. In addition to
providing students a platform for their work this
allows students to have
an authentic publication
experience. The vision
for future editions is to
be completely student
managed, allowing students to conceptualize,
design, and edit the literary magazine with teacher support. Students interested in design have
an opportunity to work
with design programs
and add to their portfolios. M.E. LaZerte’s Literary Magazine Club encourages student photographers, writers, artists,
poets, and designers to
join this creative community. Whether casual
hobbyists or students interested in a career as a
writer, publisher, artist,
or editor, the Literary
Magazine Club is an incredible way to explore
ones creative side.
